Animating a dvd menu

hello everyone,
Im currently working on a dvd project and i was wondering...i need to do a layout for the main menu where Planets are the buttons to different menus. but instead of havin the menu static..when u switch buttons the planets rotate to the next button. Make sense? but i was wondering if its possible in dvd studio pro or do i have to do it in motion..and how? anyone have any suggestions or know how?

Not sure if you can do exactly what you want (I am not sure if I am getting the full way you want animation to work)
Basically, DVD SP and DVDs are limited compared to other things, such as Director or Flash, when interacting with them - such as buttons sliding or things moving smoothly - there are workarounds to fake some things, transitions and so forth, but for the most part on a menu to another button on a menu would not be a good idea due to speed and general user experience (For example you could also use buttons over video)
That being said, how do you envision the planets rotating? For example, you can, pretty easily, hide with mapped grayscale/chroma images so planets that are "off" are still and not as detailed and when you go over a button, the planet rotating is revealed in full color. You would make a movie with the planets rotating in their full color, then the overlays would cover the applicable planet underneath it.
Take a look here
http://dvdstepbystep.com/motion.php
At the image in step 18. Assume that it was blue and red and rotating. That would be in the background. Then the overlay would be an image grayscale or color over the background which you would map to hide. Mapping here
http://dvdstepbystep.com/newmap.php
Let me know if it makes sense or not, I can post some more details/examples if you need
I hope Pluto is still considered a planet for your project, my reality was shaken when they said it no longer was a planet

  • Animated DVD Menu?

I'm curious as to how I can make an animated/motion DVD menu? Like having a video clip running and THEN the menu options (play, audio, chapters) show up after the background video plays? Thanks!
    GC

You need to make your menu footage so that you get the animation and then fade in your menu background. Keep this still for as long as you like, but no less than 30 seconds so the user has time to make a choice.
Take a still image from the timeline into photoshop and set it as a background layer. Use this as a guide to create button highlights in a new layer. Hide the background and export the highlights as a pict image.
Take your footage and highlight image into DVDSP and drag the footage into a menu, set it as the background. Drag the image in and set it as the overlay. In the property inspector for the menu set the loop point marker at a position just after the still footage starts in your menu background. This is where the overlay will start.
You can treat the menu as you would any other, set the button targets and organise the button navigation. When you play the menu the animation will play first, followed by the static section where the buttons will be available. At the end of the footage the menu will loop back to the loop point marker and play from there. You'll get a slight pause as this looping takes place, which is why it's a good idea to give the static section enough time for your viewers to make a choice, so they don't get to see the loop take place.

  • Dvd menu question

    Hi everyone..
i am currently animating a dvd menu in after effects, and I just want to make sure that what I am planning to do is do-able..
I am planning to have my menu as a movie, which would have the menu options appear with effects on them.. and then I want a simple image to appear next to the text upon selection.. Like an arrow symbol or something.
It is possible to overlay an image within a button region, correct?
I also want to clarify-- I definitely want the text to be clickable-- so I am imagining a button region which would extend the width of the .mov file's text area, and then a little wider to give space for the image.. but I am not sure how this is done...
so, any comments would be greatly appreciated.
    -patrick

Hi there.. Ok I am at the stage where I am ready to get this button situation going. I read the example that you suggested, but I am still a little confused with how to proceed.
Here is a screenshot of my menu:
    http://www.collinatorstudios.com/www/menubuttons2.png
The text "Start practice, Technique tutorials, dvd extras, audio settings" are part of the video, they are not text in the buttons.. However, the Buttons do have that symbol in them, which is what I want the 'selection cursor' to be.
    1) This is an animated menu where the options reveal themselves around 30 seconds into the menu. How do I make my buttons not become active until the loop point?
    2) Do I really want to use an overlay file like in your example?
    3) How do I set the non-selected buttons to be invisible? (So that there is only one symbol at any given time)
    Thank you.

  • How to create a DVD menu like an animated Flash Menu?

Hello.  I'm trying to figure out how to create an animated menu in Encore for a DVD, much like how menus are that are created in flash.  How can I create one in Encore for a DVD menu?  Thanks.

  • DVD Menu Transition Effects

I have successfully created a motion graphic DVD menu in AE, which I have rendered to be authored in Encore. The theme is horror/thriller with thriller theme for the BG music. There are two(2) selecitons on the main menu:
    Play Movie         Bonus Features
When the user chooses Play Movie, I would like a transition effect leading to the main video to be played. And maybe a different transition effect when the user selects Bonus Features before getting into the submenu of bonus features.
Can anyone sugguest any resources (e.g., books, manuals, blogs, video resources, courses, etc.) that can provide a tutorial on how to perform the procedure(s) in AE and EN?
Your assistance would be highly appreciated.

The ones I am seeing are not for transitions specifically - quite a few bad links. And the ones I see may be for older versions.

  • Any way to smoothly transition from animation to a menu?

My DVD starts with an animation that, when it ends, forms the main menu background. The problem I'm having is that the only way I know to set up the DVD is to have it pause awkwardly in between the end of the animation and the menu background. This is my setup: I have the opening animation as the source of a track which then connects to the main menu with has the background graphic as its source.
Is there any way around this so that the animation plays seamlessly into the main menu without the pause? Is there is a way to make the background for the main menu the entire, single animation, then somehow "turn on" the buttons and overlay file once the opening part is over and it settles to form the main menu background?

Yes. You need to create one single video (in FCP) that is your opening animation that leads to your menu animation (you need to put all of your graphics in FCP, not DVD SP). Put a chapter marker at the point you want your buttons to pop on. Create an overlay file for your buttons. Sending the video to Compressor to encode as a m2v file. Then bring the .m2v and your overlay file into DVD SP, and drop them into your menu. Then set the loop point at your chapter marker.
Now when someone plays your DVD, they will see what is before the loop point once and it will seamlessly go into the second half of your menu, which will endlessly loop.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 DVD Menu

I read somewhere that I could make a DVD menu, in Adobe Elements for Adobe Premire Elements 10, but I am having troubling figuring out how to do so. Dose anyone know if there is a written or video tutorial for making a dvd template in Adobe Photoshop Elements 10? As that would really help me out, and I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

The Menu Sets in PrE are very involved, as PrE does a lot of semi-automatic authoring, so things have to be done a very specific way. This ARTICLE links to a thread in the Photoshop Forum, where I discuss the naming conventions, etc..
When on is working with PrE Menu Sets, I have several recommendations:
Only start with, and Save Copies of the Menu Sets.
Keep one of the Menu Set Templates handy, as a reference.
Remember that Photoshop can both create and edit Layer Sets (the structure of Buttons), while PSElements can only edit them, and not create them, unless something was changed with PSE 10.
Sub-picture Highlights (the Button "activation" part), can only be 2-bit, and cannot have any FX.
The Layer, and the PSD naming conventions are extremely important. Those special characters are what make the Menu Set work.
When done, Save into a new folder, withing the DVD Template folder hierarchy, and also do the PNG files, just like the DVD Templates have, so you can see them in PrE.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - I think that Steve Grisetti covers a lot of this in his PrE and PSE book.

  • DVD menu title selection on DVD player with DVD's burn from iDVD

Regarding DVDs burned with iDVD 6.0.3, I have burned multiple DVDs with 6 buttons on the main menu page each of which links to a short film. On the menu screen when I push the right arrow button on the DVD remote not all the menu buttons light up. In addition to pushing the right arrow button on the remote, I have to push the up or down arrow button on the remote (to the DVD player hooked up to the TV) to get to some of the buttons in my DVD menu to be selectable. The buttons are arranged by me in a grid sort of pattern. Is there a way in iDVD I can get all the buttons to be selectable using only the right or left arrow keys on the DVD player remote? Do you understand what I am asking?

    Hi powerbookaid
And welcome to apple discussions. It's actually difficult to find standalone versions on ebay and CL / Apple's FCP and DVDSP. I found them myself but it took me a very long time. Not always something you can do overnight. But if you are very patient something will show up eventually.
If you need something now that works (although I advise caution as in backup your dvd or video_TS first) then consider this app for much less money (donationware):

  • Extaracting a DVD menu

Is there a way to extract a DVD menu with or without workable buttons from a TS folder. also is there a software to open BUP's and IFO's from a video TS folder?
    Jeff

There are tons of extractors out there to do this kind of work. MPEG Stream Clip is a good one. Look in your TS folder under the VOB labeled "VOB010". This is where DVDSP puts the its menus by default.
"VOB020", "VOB030", ect if you happen to move your menu around in the VTS Viewer. Basically when you see "_0" - thats where the menus are.

Adobe Encore will create menus for you. Encore is now bundled with Premiere pro.

  • Adding a link to an excel file in DVD Menu?

Can you add a link in the DVD menu to open and excel file?

This will be an option for those who have excel installed.
I am already including the file on the DVD in a folder called Excel File. However, I would like to make it easy for those who choose to open it. Other wise PC users need to the following:
    1) Go to My Computer
    2) Right click on the DVD
    3) Click "explore" (Not open - which many will do)
    4) Open the Excel File folder
    5) Open the file
So my reason for doing this it to make 5 steps into 1.

  • Link in a DVD menu to link to text files such as Word, Adobe PDF's ect

    Hello All
Is there anyway to put a link in a DVD menu to link to text files such as Word, Adobe PDF's etc that are burned into the DVD?
Hope someone can help me out.

Is there anyway to put a link in a DVD menu to link
to text files such as Word, Adobe PDF's etc that are

Actually, you CAN'T with iDVD. You CAN put a variety of content into the DVD-ROM area, but that isn't accessable from any menu in an iDVD created DVD.
If you use DVD Studio Pro, you have some ability to add the kind of links you ask about.

  • DVD menu in Encore from DVD markers in timeline

How can I use the DVD markers on the timeline in Premiere Pro (thus also in Encore) to build a DVD menu in Encore. In premiere pro 2 where the DVD authoring was included the DVD markers automatically presented themselves as a DVD menu.

I edit most Projects into "scenes" or "chapters," on separate Sequences. In Encore, I usually have one En Timeline per Sequence, or Chapter. However, one CAN have one long Timeline, where the Chapters are deliniated via Markers.
When you say "I cannot get more than one scene in the menu." I am not sure that I am following you. You should be able to have 16, or 32 (depends on the Aspect Ratio of the Menu) Buttons, per Menu (total Buttons), and each linked to a Chapter in your Encore Timeline. What exactly is happening, when you try to link your Buttons to the Chapters?
Good luck, and let us know a bit more, as I do not think that you will need to re-do your Project in PrPro, or probably not even in Encore.

  • DVD menu in Adobe Premiere

Any one know how to make DVD menu in Adobe Premiere? Only a simple DVD menu is enought.  Really appriciate your help. Thanks

I used the CS2 quick DVD for review projects.  But it is easy to accomplish this in CS3 and even easier in CS4 and CS5 (where you have dynamic link to  Encore).
From Premiere CS4 with your desired sequence active, pick Fiile -> Adobe Dynamic Link -> Send to Encore.
This will open that sequence as a timeline in Encore and will make it first play.  The simplest version is to set the end action of the timeline to "stop," set the transcode (probably the default) to automatic, and it will create a DVD with no menu that plays your movie.
If you want to add a simple menu, take a main (not a submenu) from the library and double click it.  Remove all but one of the buttons.  Link the button to your timeline, right click on the menu and make it "first play," and make the end action of your timeline "return to last menu."
Yes, it can become complicated very quickly, but simple menus should not be too difficult.
