Animation codec & DV codec used together

My client has provided me a snapzpro .mov of a powerpoint presentation he was giving. The movie uses the animation codec, 510 x 382 pixels, 22.35 FPS. He also has DV footage of his presentation. My job is to transition between the powerpoint .mov and presentation DV to produce a compelling timeline. It will be exported for use on a DVD.
I read the snapzpro mov into the FCP timeline and exported it out using the animation codec and resetting the FPS to 29.97 so I can edit it correctly. When I export it using the DV codec, the red type is terribly pixelated from the compression. If I export it using compressor, the result is better, but still not great.
I will be cutting between the DV and Animation mov and I would like some suggestions on a good workflow (what codec to use) and how to achieve the best possible result for the DVD.
Thanks, Dan

Try PhotoJPEG at hires rather than Animation. Anaimation is interframe compression and producs weird artifacting and smearing as things move across the screen.

Hi,
I'm also having trouble with this same issue. I've been trying to change the Quicktime Default Setting to 10-bit uncompressed (btw codec works fine out directly out of QT and other apps), or to use the command line to do quick renders of tiff frame sequences to QT 10-bit. I think its a problem with my syntax on the command line. As per the manual I set up a fileout in a script with 10-bit as the codec, opened the script in Textedit and followed the instructions on p393, and dropped it into the include/startup directory. Below is a copy of the Textedit view of the script output settings. Also, If I want to use these settings the command line what should I change? The quotation marks, commas etc?
"QuickTime", "Shake 3 QT 1", "Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2",
0, "100W@c6000WDcsuHpoe10pFnKA6W230PPMMRH#0LgfI5ALV1EaKGn3DG3214QaPb03SeOBPg00K1bY AESIIW0KAbabF7YWOQan8401v6QvQehFnRYIBt9be1B4AEjYA6ci8YmM#IKXCg5aRMZC2MXBM0Ani04w HAJLmBrQ97MtegeEEO9d5oBoxCgv7GNhEOvai8INwFwb2roIf91bvbr040HAK4IYCW0",
0, 44100, 16);
I get the same message returned in Terminal:
error: - NRiCompressor - corrupted input data (length)
The QuickTime codec specified in the global default could not be selected. The system default codec will be selected.
So it renders to Animation. Something else I found was that the example on p393 in the manual is for 10-bit uncompressed - so I tried copying it right off the page, into Textedit, and into the include/startup dir - still no joy.
Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

• Animation Codec Issues - no preview in Media Encoder or Quickview..

I have recently updated to Mavericks (10.9.5) and I have since found that I can't preview any After Effects creative I have produced with the animation codec in Media Encoder. Normally I would bring the AE file (with animation codec) in to Encoder and resize to convert to an FLV, only now I can't preview the resize so I have no idea what the file will look like when converted. I have seen that people are having issues with the animation codec using quick view (space bar) but has anyone else been having issues in Encoder on Mavericks?

• I have exported a file from premiere cs3 using quicktime animation codec, when i burn it the audio is not there..help!?

hello.
am having a proble with adobe premiere cs3
i have exported the file as quicktime using the animation codec, with 100per cent quality as it needs to be the highest quality
when i play the file with media player the sound is there, but when i burn it onto a dvd the audio is not there anymore... i really dont understand what i am doing wrong! can anyone help please?
i am using quicktine as im told this the best for optimum lossless quality
if i cannot burn it with audio using the quikctime animation codec, then i might try exporting it as an avi file. if so, what is the best codec to use for lossless quality?
thankyou!!!!

And when you follow Jim's suggestions, Export as elemental streams, i.e. one Video-only file and one Audio-only file. Encore will like that better.

• Dropped Frames Warning after matching clip settings using Animation codec.

I have a 720 x 540 px animation exported as a QT movie from a 3D program, using the animation codec. I'm bringing it into Final Cut 6, placing it on the timeline and allowing FC to change its sequence settings to match those of the clip so it won't need to be rendered.
If I duplicate the clip several times, placing the duplicates back to back, the sequence plays w/ no problem. If I introduce a different clip, a generated slug or even leave a gap on the timeline I get the Dropped Frames Warning on the very last frame of the clip, right before the play head would move to the first frame of the new clip, or the slug, or the gap where there's nothing on the timeline.
If I initially bring in a clip that's been compressed using PNG and have Final Cut change its sequence settings to match those of the clip, everything plays flawlessly. Same thing using None compression. Plays fine. If I leave FC at its default settings and render the clips after I place them on the timeline, they play fine and I don't get the warning. I only get the warning when I have FC match the settings of a clip using the Animation codec.
I'm running 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon w/ 16 GB Ram. My boot drive is an SSD and my video media is stored on a 2nd internal 7200 RPM HD.
I did read on another forum that the Animation codec tends not to perform so well in FC. I'm wondering if that's the problem or if it's hardware related?

Turn the warning off:
Go to the menu Final Cut Pro > User Preferences and on the General Pane, uncheck the Report dropped frames during playback box. Then click OK.
The warning only alerts you that FCP can't call up and display the frames fast enough to play in real time, so it is dropping frames - during playback.
When you are done editing, you will export the finished file from FCP into the deliverable format you want, during that process every frame of your timeline will be added to the exported file.
And yes, playing back in Animation Codec is  real heavy lifting for FCP.

• Animation CoDec to DVNSTC Frame Dimension Challenge

I have 3 videos that I need to edit together. They were provided to me as QuickTime files using the animation codec.
A is 640x480 Apple Lossless codec.
B is 720x486 using Animation codec.
C under the format says the following "Format: None, 720x480 (648x480), Millions 16-bit integer (Bid Endian), Stereo, 48.000kHz"
How do I get all of these videos into the same DVNTSC 4:3 timeline without either videos A,B, or C getting stretched or squished?
Thanks,
Mike

Have you tried? 640x480 is square pixels, and 720x480 and 720x486 are rectangular pixels. The rectangular pixel ones should look fine. The 640x480 one might have to be resized or adjusted to fit.

• ProRes files act crazy and transcoding to Animation codec gets ugly

So, allegedly, the Animation codec is lossless. However, when I take something encoded with Apple ProRes 422 HQ and transcode to Animation within the Quicktime Pro software, I see noticeable differences. Including: color change and increased aliasing.
The same is true when attempting to export stills from ProRes, even in the highest, most lossless formats. I am wondering if ProRes for PC is actually not quite ready for prime time? When I import a ProRes file into After Effects, I notice the same quality drop associated with trying to transcode it to a lossless format. It seems as though ONLY QT Pro has the capability to display ProRes files properly. If this is the case, this is largely useless, since I can't then USE these ProRes files for anything. What the heck guys? I wouldn't have had clients deliver me ProRes encoded stuff if I knew that it didn't actually maintain its integrity.
Please help out as soon as possible. Clients with deadlines are waiting on a solution that doesn't involve me spending 4000 grand on a new machine and FCP.

As a test, try nesting the problem sequence in a new empty sequence then export that new sequence using QuickTime. Let us know whether or not that succeeds.
Cheers

• QT: Poor video quality for gradients when Motion JPEG A/B codec used.

Hello,
I have a problem using the Quicktime (7.6) and the Motion JPEG A/B codec.
My workflow is as follows:
1. Create animation with Quartz Composer. This animation should use gradients from dark red to white.
2. Export the animation as Quicktime film (MOV), set full HD (1920x1080), duration e.g. 2 minutes.
3. Open exported MOV with Quicktime(Pro)
4. Export again to Quicktime film, now choose Motion JPEG A for codec, set quality to best.
5. Check the exported film. The gradient is not smooth, I see bright and dark lines. The quality of the gradient is poor.
I checked the other codecs. When I use "Animation" then the gradient is smooth and beauty.
Unfortunately I have to use Motion JPEG codec due to customer requirements.
Does anybody have an idea, how I can improve the quality? Maybe internal QT settings? Other external Motion JPEG codec ?
Thanks in advance
LeKarmar

Hello QuickTimeKirk,
Thank you for your reply.
I need Motion JPEG A/B or PhotoJPEG This is my "final distribution format" required by the customer.
I have problems not only with the red color. Even using grey, blue or yellow gradients produces bad output.
You're right. Animation codec produces what I will accept and want, but the files are huge sized and my customer doesn't accept this format.
Please note, that I already set the high quality playback setting in Quicktime.

• Videos encoded with Apple Animation Codec won't play properly in QT7.5

Quick Time version I have installed is 7.5 (149.5). I also have Perian 1.1 and Mpeg2 codec for QT.
All of a sudden, all videos I render using Apple Animation Codec with alpha channel won't properly play in QuickTime, nor in Preview (when you click on .MOV file and press Space). They actually play, but colors are all screwed up and it looks like it's playing only alpha layer. I tried same movies on my work buddy's Mac and everything looks perfet. I also tried importing those videos into Flash, and everything works fine, but when I have to preview them in QT or using Finder's Preview, they look crazy. I can't send any screenshots since this thing happens on my work iMac (new aluminum one, Leopard 10.5.4, all updates installed) and I am at home now.
I tried reinstalling QT but to no avail, nothing changed. I've looked through Library/QuickTime subfolder, and only items I could find were QuickTimeMPEG2.component, Perian.component, ffmpeg.component, and AppleIntermediateCodec.component.
I'm slowly going crazy over here, because nothing I tried worked.
Is there any way of completely removing everything QT related and reinstalling it from the scratch ? Please help!
Thanks in advance!

Hah, found out what's the problem. It is not my computer, it is not my QuickTime got corrupt. It is QuickTime's bug decoding movie file encoded using following combination of settings:
Quick Time encoder
Compression Type: Animation
Depth: Millions of colors+ (alpha channel included)
Quality: Best
ParticleIllusion
Output options
Save Alpha - enabled
Remove Black bg from RBG channels - if this item is enabled, this is exactly what gives QT problems trying to encode it. I repeat, this option must be enabled in some cases (it removes that nasty black-dirt-looking extra halo glow around the object that already has some kind of glow applied to it). It makes your animation rendered with alpha channel a lot better looking and animation seamlessly blends with any kind of colored background. Well, QT has problems "reading" this format.
In the same time, if you import such animation rendered with this option enabled into Flash, everything looks perfectly fine. It's just QuickTime won't play it properly.
Every single Mac I checked has this same problem, and it's not Mac's problem, it is QuickTime problem.
I have two examples, you can see it yourself:
First one is when black bg is still present in RGB channels (animation looks exactly as it should):
http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackPresent.mov
And second one is when black bg is removed from RGB channels (colors looks weird):
http://www.sasha-z-creations.com/quicktime/Example_BlackRemoved.mov
I repeat, both examples look exactly the same (great looking) when imported into Flash dev utility.
Cheers!

• Animation codec files from AE

Mm. Since FCS2 I have not been able to work with any ANIMATION codec files in compressor. Was hoping that updates would fix this, but not so far...
The strange thing is I can use QTpro to compress them without any problem. They're not crazy 4K res files or anything (which my old 2.7 G5 was able to handle slowly, but fine on FCS5.1) .
The moment I assign a setting to a Animation video target it blows up. Any advice?

Blowup = Crash.
There is value in having a lossless master file that you can just run any number of various encodes from as the project demands, especially if the encoding specs change after delivery, and new encodes are requested. This eliminates the need to revive the master project and re-link any media in order to output files to a new spec. + Running batch encodes by just clicking and dragging.
Though workflows might be different, it does not change the fact that Compressor should be able to do it... This used to work fine until FCS2. Animation is a basic codec that's been around for yeaaaars.

• Gopro 2.7k export quicktime animation codec custom 22gb mov file?

Adobe support told me to export using quicktime <animation codec <custom 2704 x 1536 res for my gopro 2.7k and it turned into a 22.5 gb mov file. (not even 2 minutes long!!!!)
What do I do next? I mean I cant upload that to youtube. (well I could)
I'm new to adobe is there a better way to get my 2.7k res without it being 22.5gb or how do I convert it smaller and what would be the best for youtube.
I'm trying to get the best quality so I can view it later on my retina screen. Should I just upload it as is for best quality even if it takes a day lol? Thanks soooo much

Ya np I actually just check again, back in july 2010 youtube allowed various 4k formates then lowered in 2012 to 2048 x 1536 (I'm glad I just checked that)
So ya I've been researching youtubes uploader as much as I can and from different people have said large files get crushed so some have had better results converting it to a smaller size (not resolution) and uploading it for better results but now I have a 22gb 1 minute video and am wondering the best way to convert it smaller.
Also strange question but converting a 2.7k to 1080 will provide cleaner and crisper picuter but how would a 2.7k exported at 4k look. I would think it'd look grainy but what if you were viewing that on a 1080 screen?

• Quicktime animation codec bad playback

Hello, ever since I updated to the newest version of quicktime, any file using the Quicktime animation codec stutters and freezes on playback.
This has happened before, and rolling back to previous versions helped then, but isn't helping now.
I've gone far enough as to format the computer and reinstall everything, but the problem still occurs. Every other codec seems to work fine. I can work around it by using other export methods, but it's a problem when I need to edit previous or co-workers projects on my machine.
Any suggestion on how to fix this?

Any thoughts why this might be happening?

• Animation codec monitor preview

Hi,
Wondering if anyone can address this issue. When working with Apple Motion using animation codec, playback is shown on my external monitor fine. When I playback a sequence with an animation codec in FCP, however, it goes black until i stop and it updates to current frame. I'm wondering if this is to do with Motion's use of the graphics card. If so, anyway of getting FCP to do this?

"Black?" That's not right.
But, yes, Motion's use of the GPU is a huge benefit when processing alphas. FCP simply doesn't have the hooks. Yet. Maybe today's announcements form Macworld will change that?

• Animation Codec w/photo slideshows

I've read on here that using the Animation Codec with photo only slideshows works well. I'm trying it for the 1st time and having trouble playing it back. I keep getting the spinning wheel and dropped frames.
My Macbook Pro has a 1.83 Ghz processor and I'm using an external hard drive for my scratch disk with my project file on my computer. Also have a firewire going through a Canopus converter to an external monitor. I've never had a problem before, but this Animation Codec is throwing something off.
Here are screenshots of my settings... can someone tell what's going wrong here?

What do you recommend as a codec workflow for photo only slideshows going out to DVD?
DV50. Low data rate, but good quality. As good as Uncompressed 8-bit. Animation simply is NOT a good codec for editing. Transferring from one app to another, yes. Editing, no. Who told you that? i'll smack them down...
I only use the converter so I can view my work on an external monitor. Sounds like this is limiting my options?
Yup...you can only view DV with that converter...nothing else.
Is there another way I can view my work on an external monitor w/o being limited to DV/NTSC?
Yup...a CAPTURE CARD. AJA.com, Matrox.com, Decklink.com. But you will need a MacPro or MacBook Pro (w/express34 slot) in order for this to work. There are no options (cheap ones anyway) for iMacs or MacMinis.
Just use DV50...but you will have to forget about being able to monitor that, unless you get a capture card.

• Animation codec not supported in maverics?

I have several quick time movies that I rendered using the animation codec and never had a problem watching them with the quick time player. The quick time player in mavericks is converting them to Apple pro res before starting playing them. It takes a lot of time and the resolution drops considerably.
Has anyone had the same problem? Is there a way to make the player read the QT animation codec?
Thanks

The QuickTime codecs should be available If QT is loaded on your computer, but they might not have presets. Select Format: QuickTime, and Video Codec: Animation.
