Animation (RGB) codec in FCP

Hi all,
What are the best practices for staying colour accurate with PAL Animation (RGB) codec files being brought into FCP ProRes (YUV) PAL sequence?
Will FCP handle it with no problems? Should the Animation QT's be converted with Compressor to ProRes then brought into FCP? Would Episode be better than Compressor for this if required?
Are there 3rd party software scopes that are better than the FCP's?
Thanks for any feedback

Won't hurt, but just try rendering in the sequence first.

Color's scopes are better, but nothing is better than hardware scopes.

  • Using an animation-friendly codec for decoding DVDs to MP4

    Hi,
I have some purchased cartoon DVDs that I'd like to convert into MP4s for travel purposes etc. Using Handbrake has resulted in a lot of artifacts, and I wonder if using an animation-specific codec would give better results - not to mention smaller file sizes. Could someone advise me how to go about converting DVDs to MP4s using an animation codec? I own QT 7 Pro and iMovie. I also have Diva and Drop2DV.
NB: I am aware of the copyright restrictions on recorded media and wish to re-assure the MPAA, RIAA, FACT, PRS, FBI, CIA, CPS and South-East England Water and Sewerage Workers Union that I in no way intend to distribute, freely or otherwise, any of the backups I may make as a result of receiving information on this forum.

Well say you had plain vanilla DVD content from your iDVD you made. The bitrate on the animation codec is huge, and the resulting file would likely be actually larger than from the DVD file you began with. And won't conform to MPEG-4 since it is not the MPEG-4 codec anyway.
Just use MPEG Streamclip, export to MPEG-4 and if this is for iPod press the iPod button. You need the Apple MPEG-2 component and don't forget to fix timecode errors. H264 is plenty good for this transcoding.

  • I would like to know the list of possible output (export) file codec from FCP X. For example, can I export  in F4V or FLV format?

I would like to know the list of possible output (export) file codec from FCP X.  For example, can I export  in FLV format?  Where do I find the list, which gives me all the details about it?  Or is there only one output codec? Thanks

That's an excellent analogy. While FCP cannot export FLV. It is possible to do a very simple substitution. If you export a QuickTime movie using the .mov suffix with the H.264 codec, you can change it to FLV simply by changing the suffix to .flv. This is an acceptable format for Flash movies on most web sites, if that's where you're trying to go.

  • Motion animation when imported into FCP comes out as 4:3 instead of 16:9

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a bumper animation for my feature film. I started in Motion 3 created a simple animation and imported into FCP and flagged it for 16:9 but still comes ot as 4:3 when exported to Quicktime. Any ideas as to why?
    Chris

Set the anamorphic flag. Click on you clip in the FCP timeline or browser and type ⌘9. Check the Anamorphic flag.

  • Quicktime codec for fcp files?

is there a way to view newer fcp files with out purchasing fcp?
any iMovie plugins or quicktime or quicktime pro codecs available?
I have fcp 6.0.6 on an old G5 dual processor runing Tiger 10.4.11, but now have a new MacBook Pro but not newest fcp and some one just gave me a newer fcp project on a firewire drive to simply author a DVD which I find I am unable to accomplish.
    Any free or inexpensive solutions?

Transfer your FCP license to the new machine and upgrade?
Apple will allow that, I've done it before, for Aperture.
The new MacBook Pro quads are like twice as fast as the Dual G5 processors anyway.

  • Panasonic AVC Intra codec and FCP 2

Does anyone know if the latest version of FCP supports the new AVC Intra codec found on the higher-end Panasonic P2 HD cameras? We're a production house, and are considering investing in the Panasonic AJ-HPX3000 P2 HD camera, which is starting to ship this month. I know FCP Studio 2 supports the ProRes 422 codec; I'm wondering if we would have to convert the footage from the HPX3000 to ProRes 422 so it could be edited in FCP, and how long that process would take. Thanks!

If the camera does component or sdi out, you can use a Kona3 or io hd to convert to ProRes422 during real time playback.

  • Playing Avid Mpeg 50 Codec in FCP

Hi I have FCP V7 on Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and have successfully installed the latest Avid PE codec Package for Intel. The Mpeg50 media will now play in QT player, but not in FCP where it says:"Codec not found you may be using a compresssion card without the corresponding hardware card." Any ideas?

The whole point is that we have done this successfully before with V6 and a powerpc mac. So maybe its either Snow Leopard, V7 or the codec compatibility. I wouldn't want to generate media with this codec, but as most of our station is Avid, then it is useful to be able to play same as source exports from Avid without transcoding.
Remember the files play perfectly well in QT player, since FCP is built around QT, I'm baffled. Maybe its a Libraries thing or permissions?

  • Working with the Media100 codec in FCP 5 HD?

I got 20 mins of digibeta source and I want to edit that in FCP.
I don't have any capture card but I do got a friend who got a media100 system with SDI-in and the Media100's lossless codec.
Can I capture on his system, export out as a standalone file.
Then install the Media100 software codec on my machine and edit in FCP?
I've encoded MPEG2's and stuff before with source that was captured from Media100, but will it work to edit it like that in FCP aswell?
If I'm not mistaken the bitrate is around 7MB/sec using the media100 codec compared to transcoding into some other not-so-destructive-one.

    Kristoffer:
One the reasons I responded as I did is because I had three Media 100 systems over the years that concluded with a Media100 XS system.
One clear deficiency was the lack of any software codec, and then the lack of an OS X version of it.
When FCP started gaining popularity, people tried all sorts of hacks to get it to work with the hardware. It just didn't.
Then the company went south financially, went to Optibase, and then Boris bought it from Optibase.
If the software m100 codec allows you to open the exported movie files in the QT Pro player, you have option to export it to any codec consistent with your sequence settings.
Or it would be possible to set up a custom preset within FCP to match the clips attributes of the raw clips
Hope this helps. BTW, sometimes I really don't know what I'm talking about
    and take care

  • Transferring .mov files with H.264 codec to FCP

I am looking to purchase one of the Canon SLR cameras that offer video
    ( 5D mark 2 / 7D , etc ) and I understand that the .mov files they generate
( using the H 264 codec ) are not happily worked with in FCP.
Can anyone describe or go into what is then entailed in saving them in
a different format - one that is easily worked with in FCP ?
Is that a simple / quick step, or is it time intensive, etc. ?
Would really like to form a better understanding before purchase. I want the
camera primarily for its still image capability - so choosing another video
format ( better for file coding, etc. ) isn't so much an option.
Nonetheless, I would want to make use of the video features and am just
wondering whether it is a bit of an inconvenience, or a big fat pain in
    the @$$.
    Thanks for any help,
    Sterne

I've made a droplet that converts files from 30 fps to 29.97 and into ProRes 422.
    http://www.wallyandnay.net/Droplets/30-%3E29.97ProRes422.zip
I take my files, drop them on the droplet, go watch TV while they convert, then edit in FCP. Is it quick? No, but you can have only two of the following things
No transcoding, amazing quality, cheap price.
    Put up with the transcoding.

  • Animation QT codec now second-class citizen?

I've noticed that QT movies compressed with the animation codec are all showing in the Finder a  generic QT icon (as opposed to a frame). When I select such a movie in the finder and press spacebar, the pop-up window does not display a movie, but only a QT generic icon.
    I'm running OSX 10.9.3 on a 2014 MacPro.
How do I (can I) restore such movies to behave like QT movies on a Mac?
    Any advice gratefully received.

    Try VLC.

  • Converting AVCHD to best codec in FCP 7

    Hello,
I have a Canon HFS-10 camera, and using FCP7. At the moment it is a breeze editing but there are a couple of questions I have.
I'm not sure I'm using the right codec as there is a bit of a stutter with action which is not a show stopper but can't help feeling I can do better. Does anyone have a view on the best codec for AVCHD?
Also, any way of getting the file size smaller on import?
And finally, what is the best aftermarket video card to assist with FCP 7 and Motion?
    Cheers.

Probably ProResLT would be enough for most media.

  • Avid Codec on FCP

Hi. Currently i am trying to view QT with AVmp from Avid. I have download the AvidCodecsLE, but I don't know what is the right sequence setting to use. I've tried all but it kept saying "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card. I am using FCP7.0.3 on MacBook Pro i7. Please help.

    try this link
    Avid QuickTime Codecs LE 2.3.2
    http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=372311
I've done it before Qt footage with Avid codec on a FCP timeline
I don't beleive FCP cares what is in the timeline as long as you provide the right CODEC.
    good luck

  • Motion Codec in FCP

If I just save a Motion project (not export it) just save it and then open the Motion file in FCP by going file import....the Motion file comes into FCP and in its item properties for compressor it reads ......motion codec decompressor......
What is this? I can not set the FCP SEQUENCE settings to have the same "motion codec decompressor" as IT"S compressor. This creates a situation where you always have to render the section coming from Motion. What is this "motion codec decompressor" The Motion manual says to open a Motion file in FCP this way. Is there a way to set the compressor in MOTION for when you save a project/graphic you create ratherr then when you export it?
    Any ideas anyone??

I understand why it would need to be rendered...I never get an error or mentioned one....the question is...what is this "motion codec decompressor" and can a Motion project be saved...not exported....without it.> FCP ≠ Motion.
Of course you have to render Motion projects. It is
    not an error.

  • Avid Meridien 2:1P PAL RGB codec

I have some some Quicktimes given to me from a client and the codec is Avid Meridien,
    Can i convert these?
I have heard installing the avid codecs can create problems owith After effects or FCP or something with the OS

    Hi Toby,
I run FCP, Avid and After Effects on my Macs and have never had any problems. The only problem I have heard of is that Avid software is not happy if you have a BlackMagic capture card installed in your machine. You can download the Avid codecs package from their website (if you haven't already got them on your machine) and then use either FCP, Quicktime, or Compressor to convert them to another format/codec.

  • Exporting animation - what codec

I have computer animations that I am working on in FCE. These are downloaded HD demos being cropped to 4:3 scale. I have tried every codec in FCE (I have aftermarket codecs installed too) and the only two that put out quality end results are Animation and JPEG. The problem is, the file size is HUGE.
One of the sample 4 minute videos is very crisp and is only 230 megs. When I export (using Quicktime conversion) using one of the above codecs, a 20second file is 380+megs!
How are these people exporting reasonable file sizes with such high quality?

The Animusic demos on the Apple HD demo site are a perfect example.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd
I tried bringing those into FCE and exporting them and as my first post explained, I can't get the same quality without the filesize becoming out of control.
Same goes for the HD demos on the Microsoft site.
