Animation: Same Layer, Multiple Points in Timeline?

Hello everybody,
I have two questions about using the Animation feature in Photoshop...
(1) Is it possible to copy, click and drag an entire set of layers in the timeline? Like, if I want to move a group of layers forward or backward in the timeline, without individually moving each layer?
(2) This one I think might be impossible... is it possible to have the same layer show up at multiple points in the timeline? Like if I want to create an animation which goes through several cycles with only a few layers changing in each cycle? This feature would be really helpful, it'd be a shame if it isn't supported.
Many thanks!
Jason

  • Same layer - multiple masks.

    Sorry ..real basic question.

  • Is there a way to add multiple outlines on the same layer?

Hi there! I'm trying to add an outline to text or objects through the style fx, then I want to add more outlines. It would be nice if you could just add a new stroke like in illustrator. I don't want copy the layer and just do a thicker outline behind it, the point is to have it all on the same layer .. just wondering if thats possible. Thanks!

You have been given two approaches which may meet your needs. There is another way that offers independent control of the styles, but you do use multiple layers.
Assume you have a path that defines your object and lets say you want to apply three different styles and have independent and ongoing control over each. Create a new blank layer for each style. On each of those layers apply a brush stroke to the path, say a 1 pixel stroke whose color is also the background color as an example. Now on each of those layers apply your chosen layer styles. That is what I have done in this example:

  • Why can't I rotate multiple points in puppet warp at the same time?

You can rotate single points in puppet warp, and you can shift+click to select multiple points and move them at the same time but I see no way to rotate multiple points as one group using puppet warp.  This would be a very helpful feature I think should be added.

  • Multiple Tweens on the same Layer?

Is it okay to have more than one new-style tween on the same layer?
I seem to remember reading that you shouldn't do it.
I was mad at Flash CS4 and CS5 because I wasn't able to make the animation work like After Effects, as far as animating something, having it rest, and then animating it again.  I know you can do this already, however, if you add easing you could mess yourself up as the ease gets applied to the entire tween. I wanted to be able to tween something with an ease, then let it rest, then tween it again, again with an ease.
Tonight I discovered this: Place CTI over last frame of first tween, select object, copy. Go to next "slot" and Insert Blank Keyframe, then Paste in Place the object. Make some more frames. Then after it all make a New Keyframe (content from preceeding keyframe gets copied into it, then add more frames, select them and Make Tween. I now have 2 tweens on the same layer, each with their own easing that can't get stretched out of place.
However, when I did this I noticed, before making the second tween, that I was not able to just click the object and Make Tween from there. I had to actually make regular frames and convert them. This isn't normal. So, I'm just wondering if I got this to work through some loophole in CS5's code or if this is normal?

  • Multiple copy in the same layer (was: Texts)

    Hi all,
I'd like to know if there is a way to quickly copy multiple times the same word in the same layer
So if i want to make a sun through a word i will make something like this
         sun
    sunsunsun
         sun
In photoshop for example i can create a text brush (in After Effects i can't, right?) and i can make the same in Flash CS6 (using the 3d brush) but it slows down the program
So how can i solve this problem?
    - It should not be "heavy"
    - I would like to have total control of what i can make (like what i can make using Photoshop brushes and Flash 3d brush tool)

Consider using a topic with durable subscriptions rather than queues to
accomplish the duplicate forwards. This would be higher performing.
If you then use the BEA messaging bridge to forward from the queue to the topic
              no application code is required.
On another note, if the message copy must be atomic (all or nothing) use a
              transactional MDB
to encase the receive and the duplicate sends in one tx. Otherwise a crash
may lead to a partial copy, and it will be hard for your app to determine
who received what already, causing lost messages and/or duplicates...

  • Dual-layer break point is not cooperating!

I have authored a dual layer disk. I have tagged chapter 18 as the dual-layer break point. In the project chapter 18 is clearly tagged properly, including the little black dot appearing in the proper place on the timeline. But after the disk is burned, which I am having to do using Toast and and external burner, the dual-layer break point is happening on chapter 19. Does anyone know why this would be happening. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

As a follow-up to Jake's answer, the reason Toast does its own thing with respect to the dual layer break point is because the .img file that DVDSP saves does not contain any break point information. So, you'd have the same problem with any burning program, not just Toast.
This is on p. 584 of the DVDSP 4.1 manual, if anyone's interested.

  • AE CS5 - Shape Layer - Anchor point moves after position keyframe

I am experiencing unintuitive (to me) behaviour with a brand new shape layer. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue. I have made a screen cap of the problem but can't figure out how to upload it to this forum.
    1. In an existing composition, I create a new Shape Layer
    2. By default the anchor point (center point) is in the dead center of the shape layer. Perfect.
    3. I turn on Position keyframing, and add a position keyframe at my current time
    4. Instantly the anchor point now jumps to the center of the composition, and so now when I scale my shape layer it doesn't scale properly
If I try to use the Pan Behind tool, I get position keyframing. Besides, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, since the anchor point was in the correct spot to start with, and it's only because of this keyframing "bug" that the anchor point jumps.
What am I missing or doing wrong? How can I add a position keyframe to a BRAND NEW LAYER that has no other animation on it, and still keep the anchor point in the dead center of my shape?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Tom

Thanks to Rick and Mylenium for your helpful answers. Rick, I'd prefer not to have to manually reposition, because I'm never going to be as mathematically precise as the software for positioning the Anchor Point dead center.
Using the transform controls on the shape rather than the global container certainly did the trick! You guys are great. Thanks.
    [rant]
In my defense as far as the constant exhortations to "RTFM", we all know that most veteran software users only go to the manual when there's a problem. You also know that Adobe's help system (particluarly in regards to search) has gotten worse over the years, not better. So when I run into a situation like this, I'm going to search through the help for what I believe the problem is: namely "anchor points", "transformations" and "keyframes", and maybe "shape layers". This is a fair amount of research, and it's exactly what I do as my first line of defense.
The second line of defense that most tech savvy folk do, is a Google search; for example: "anchor point moves after position keyframe" or "After Effects shapes layer anchor point moves keyframe" etc. And you spend your time sifting through forums trying to find the relevant answers. I feel that THAT is my true due diligence, rather than reading the F'n Adobe manual that is so very very sparse.
So after my due diligence, I turn to the experts communities, because there I know I will get educated, reliable help within a reasonable turnaround time. And because I myself contribute to these same forums in areas where I have higher than average expertise. The Adobe Forums have proven to be one of the great online resources.
Finally, now that I have a great answer from two knowledgeable experts (thanks again!), I've also enriched the community, because of the way I have crafted my post title, hopefully the next poor ******* who has a similar problem and a similar methodology to finding resolution will stubmle upon my post because I've tried to overload the title with relevant keywords that will generate hits in google.
Through my question, and your accurate answers, the global knowledgebase has improved.
So forgive me for not memorizing the F'n Adobe online help. I go to the resources that are the most useful, expedient, and provide the greatest value as a whole.

  • How to manually create layer breaking point for DVD9

Hello, I was wondering if someone could please tell me how I would go about to manually set the layer break point for a DVD9 project that I burned onto 2 DLT tapes. The total size of the DVD is 6.3GB.
I had used the "automatic" setting for burning the DLTs and sent them to a replicator. They came back saying that the layer 0 tape did not allow enough headroom for their Ripguard protection.
I've always used the automatic setting and this is the first time I am asked to manually set it. SO now I need to figure out how I can put a certain amount of data on one DLT tape and the rest on the other DLT.
I am a beginner at this so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hi Eric,
Unfortunately the information you have regarding RipGuard and the ability to copy RipGuard protected discs is a little outdated.
Can RipGuard be broken? Yes, anything can be broken into, including the DoD Website by 14 yr old chinese students... but that doesn't mean there isn't value in protecting the DVD.
Also, RipGuard is regularly updated, just like Antivirus software, so while older versions of RipGuard can be broken more easily, the latest versions of RipGuard are significantly more difficult to circumvent by existing software.
But again, the point isn't to create the unbreakable 'holy grail' DVD copy protection, but rather to protect something of value.
When you leave your house in the morning, do you close your front door and lock it? Of course you do, but why? So no one will break in. But do you think locking up your house is really going to stop someone from going around to the side of the house and busting out a window if they really want to get in? Of course it wont. If someone wants to break into your house, they will find a way.
Same thing with DVDs. You lock your house because it provides a method of protection, a barrier to make it more difficult and to keep honest people honest. That's what RipGuard, or any copy protection software does.
So the question isn't why would you protect your DVD, but rather why wouldn't you? In most cases if you prevent just a few illegal copies of your DVD from being ripped, it has already more than paid for itself.

  • Dual Layer Break Point problem

    Hi,
I just found out after I updated DSP 4 to version 4.0.3 my Layer 1 on every project since updating gets corrupted!
I thought it was the Dual Layer discs I used that caused the problem, but after I re-installed DVD Studio to the original version 4.0.0 the same project worked perfect.
Anyone else have issues with Dual Layer Break Point after updating to 4.0.3?
I have tried different chapters as layerbreak points on my project, and even a test project, with the same result. The finished discs is barely playable on some DVD players, showing wierd interference and noise, and DVD Player on mac crashes when reaching the dual layer break point, and the plant i send the master have a software to check DVDs and they said that it couldnt find/was corrupt Layer 1 on one of my discs. Hope someone can fix this, DSP is the best software otherwise!
    Best regards,
    Mats.

    DVD+R or DVD-R?
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/dvdstudiopro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=1%2 6section=9%26tasks=true
    DVD+R Double-Layer
You can use DVD+R double-layer media, often referred to as DVD+R DL, for burning your dual-layer projects. With DVD+R double-layer media, DVD Studio Pro places the layer break point and sets the switch point to be nonseamless as specified in your project.
DVD+R double-layer discs require you to use the Opposite Track Path (OTP) direction setting when burning the disc. This means that the first layer must be larger than the second layer. See Setting the Dual-Layer Direction for more information.
While DVD+R double-layer discs allow you to burn your dual-layer projects, they tend to have more compatibility issues than the other types of DVD media.
    DVD-R Dual-Layer
If your system contains a DVD drive that can write to the new DVD-R dual-layer media, you can burn your DVD project to it with DVD Studio Pro. However, there are several issues:
Because currently DVD Studio Pro has no way to identify DVD-R dual-layer media as having two layers, burning a dual-layer project to it results in the appearance of an alert message telling you that the DVD media may have insufficient room to hold the project. This message is based on the assumption that the disc is single layer. Both layers of the disc will be written to as needed, however, when you click Continue.
If you are burning a dual-layer project, the break point you set will not affect where the layer break actually occurs. Instead, the first layer is written to until filled, at which point the drive switches to writing to the second layer.
The switch between layers is a seamless layer change not supported by some DVD players, which may stop playing the disc when the switch point is reached.
Important: Do not use DVD-R dual-layer media unless these issues do not impact your project.

  • Dual Layer Break Point?

So, I found the perfect dual layer break point in my project. I have a 3 hour 58 minute video to put on DVD and set the layer break point at 2 hours 2 minutes. However, when I went to format the disc, it told me that layer 0 was too large.
When using the automatic setting, it told me the same thing.
What is the key to setting a layer break point?

    Hi Graiai,
The basic rule is to ensure that layer 0 is larger than layer 1. And obviously to set it at a point where it's not very noticable (especially for those naughty players which take a moment to refocus and have non exitent buffers).
But there are also strict guidlines as to the positioning of the point and also how much larger the second layer is. Jim Taylor's DVD Demystified is a good place to start if you are thinking of doing some serious authoring.
TO overcome your particular problem you need to find another appropriate point closer to the head of the track. I use DVDAfterEdit which takes all the guess work out for this. But for you at this stage it will be a bit of trial and error until you can get a build done.
Let me know if you need more help.

  • 2 vegas masks in same layer. wont seem to work?

    Hello Adobe Creative Forum!
I am having trouble with making my masks in the same layer rotate in vegas.
when i try to set rotation, then pull the time marker to e.g. 5 sek, and set it to 1x, it doesn't make any points between 0 and 5 sek.
I am fairly new to AE, but i have been troubleshooting for some time now, without finding my mistake(s).
Can you maybe try to take a look at my file, and see whats missing?
    https://copy.com/cBaFKEmt2ZB0H6IL
i haven't set rotation on this file(on any of the layers), but i have been trying to time it several times without luck.
thank you very much in advance :-)

Works without issues here, but of course setting both effects to render on transparent makes no sense since the second will eradicate the first. Set it to Over. also masks need to be set to None or else they will clip the layer of course, which can also make effects disappear.

I recently updated to Yosemite and never had this issue before.

I'm not 100% sure of the ins and outs, but it's some sort of known issue between Yosemite, Airport and wifi. All you can do is wait for a fix and keep restarting your equipment as and when needed, unless you have the ability to connect your Mac via ethernet.
