ANN: LensFix CI now works as an external editor

Just wanted everyone to know that LensFix CI (an OS X application) now works as an external editor in Lightroom. LensFix CI corrects distortion and allows perspective changes using Apple's Core Image tools so it is very fast. LensFix CI uses Thomas Neiman's PTLens databaase so you have over 500 camera and lens distortion presets. I haven't announced the new LensFix beta on Versiontracker or Macupdate yet but here is the link to my forum topic with the download:

  • How do I get Elements 12 to work as an external editor in Aperture?

I can't seem to get (my TRIAL Version) of Elements 12 to work properly as an external editor for Aperture.
Whilst I can import RAW or Jpeg images into the Elements 12 programme from my system files I can't export files from Aperture to Elements 12 from the Aperture workspace.
    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanks

My guess would be that you chose the logical file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. You want this one:

  • Photoshop not working as external editor

    Hi,
A couple of weeks ago a weird problem has started ocurring. Photoshop stopped working as an external editor. When I click Edit in Photoshop, Photoshop opens and it seems like it's trying to open the image but then nothing happens. It only works when I export the image as a PSD and open it then.
I think I have managed to narrow it down a little because when I click the .dng file in Finder, Photoshop tries to open the file and comes back with an error message saying "Der Vorgang konnte nicht ausgeführt werden, weil das Dateiformatmodul die Datei nicht interpretieren kann" which roughly translates to that the file can't be interpreted. I think there may be something wrong with how Lightroom converts DNG files because I can open older files fine. Funnily enough I can even open some (really just a small percentage) of the current .dngs when I can't open others.
I tried reinstalling both Lightroom and Photoshop to no avail. It happens with both Photoshop CS6 and CC.
Anybody else had that problem before or knows how to fix it?
    Many thanks,
    Manu

EDIT: Have to correct myself - now I'm back to the stathe where PS starts up and won't import the DNG. When I use the "open in other application" command and let Lightroom create a TIFF first I can open the TIFF file in PS without any problem.
    Hi,
I have ecountered the same problem a while ago. When selecting a shot to be opened in Photoshop (I run cc and LR 5.3 on a Mac), the program starts up and sometimes (not always) shows some loading activity, then keeps blank. Photoshop has no problems to open the same file when exported to the harddisk as TIFF. The problem stopped after I repaired access rights on my computer. Now PS does open the files, but (just occured today) my DNGs are opened without any adjustment I've done in Lightroom.
    Cheers,
    Torsten

  • Working with External editors & switching between 32 bit & 64 bit

Finally getting my Aperture 3 up and working (after days of frustration!) I am enjoying the new version now. BUT, my external editor (Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac & Topaz Fusion) will yet only work in 32 bit. After some early teething problems Aperture 3 now switches to whichever I choose - and allows me to use them for editing (eg adding text in Photoshop Elements) But, then it leaves me in 32 bit mode.
Is there any easy/quick way to switch back to 64 bit mode - without having to quit Aperture and re-open?
On a more basic issue - Elements tells me that for some edits it can only use 8 bit rather even than 16 bits. I assume that these 'bits' refer to the picture quality 'bits' Is this so - and what am I losing? Beside 8 'bits'!

Correction to this - Elements is working OK and saves directly into Aperture 3. But My Topaz plug ins switch to 32 bit and then Aperture 3 stays in 32 bit
Question still same - is there any other way to get back to 64 bit other than quit and re-open which is a long wat around?

  • External Editor Photoshop opens in DNG instead of TIF File, Lightroom 2

How do I get Lightroom 2 to open file in TIF Format when in Photoshop?

    >Works now, but def. a bug in LR2!
No this is by design. The way Photoshop works as an external editor changed in LR 2. It will now send the original RAW file with rendering instructions to ACR/Photoshop which means Photoshop opens the dng directly. Then you save it however you want and Lightroom will automatically pick up on it. You can also make it do it the old way if you want.

  • External Editors & File Naming

I would like to be able to name files returned to LR by an external editor with the name of the external editor itself. For example, if I am going from Lightroom to various Nik Software editors I might:
    LR->Dfine->LR->Color Efex->LR->Viveza->LR
As of now, I have "Edit" post-pended to the file so I end up with something like "filename-Edit-Edit-Edit.tif" by the time I'm done. I can manually edit the names, but this would be better:
I'd like to be able to specify a name or abbrevition for the external editor, e.g., Define, CEfex, Viv, Viveza, CS3, whatever and have that added to the filename instead.
Something like: "filename-Dfine-CEfex-Viv.tif" tells me a lot more about what was done with the file and where I left off in my workflow.
Also, the External Editor dialog could use some cleanup. I suggest putting the save/delete/update optons elsewhere as it is not obvious that they are in the Preset drop-down.
Finally, have to select an application and go under preset to save as new, is a non-obvous way of creating a new external editor. How about just adding a "New..." option?

No, there's still no way to rename Masters short of exporting them with the version name and re-importing.
The only way 'Save As' is going to work from an external editor is if you use exactly the same file name - that is the only file Aperture has sent out and it's the only file that Aperture is expecting back.
Saving with a different file name is functionally the same as copying a new file into the Library using the Finder - Aperture has no way to expect it. You'd have to save to somewhere outside the Library and then import it as a new Master, maybe setting up a hot folder in Automator for automatic importing.

  • Painter as External Editor

Lightroom lets me set up Painter as my 2nd external editor, but when I right click on a photo in Lightroom and select "Edit in Painter", it launches Painter but fails to open the file.
I had hoped that I'd find a workaround in this forum, or that recent updates to Windows Vista, Lightroom and Painter X would have fixed this. No luck -- so I devised the following workaround that should work for you if you're having similar problems:
    1) In Lightroom select Edit, Preferences and in the Additional External Editor section, press the Choose button
    2) Browse to the Windows folder on your hard drive and select explorer.exe, then press the Open button
    3) Back in the Additional External Editor section, choose File Format = either .PSD or .TIF (remember this for the next step - I choose .PSD as I create layers in Painter). Press the OK button and you're now done with the Lightroom portion of this.
    4) Open Windows Explorer and browse to a place where you see a .PSD file (or .TIFF if you chose .TIFF above)
    5) Right click on that file and choose Properties
    6) You'll see that it says type of file = .PSD (or .TIFF). If it says "Opens with Painter", you're done. If not, click on Change, select Painter and then press OK and OK again.
Whenever you're in Lightrooom and you want to edit a photo in Painter, right click on the photo and Select "Edit in explorer.exe".
I assume this approach might work for other external editors that are not playing nice with Lightroom.

A press release at DxO mentioned they were only able to offer the v4.5 plugin as the
additional external editor by way of some clever programming. They are awaiting the LR SDK to ease that burden. I'm not sure Painter falls into the same category of product.
    >I choose .PSD as I create layers in Painter
I haven't used Painter in a while, but are you sure Painter can open Adobe layered TIFs or PSDs? Don't they use a proprietary layering scheme?

  • Aperture 2 no longer supports iPhoto "edit in external editor"

I've ordered Aperture 2.0, but I'm still using the demo.
iPhoto 2008 Help says I can use Aperture as an external editor.
I just tried. Aperture opens, but the image does not appear.
I suspect this functionality broke in either Aperture or iPhoto.
Anyone else test this? I'll probably submit a bug report for iPhoto on this.

    Terence Devlin wrote:
Aperture has never worked as an external editor for iPhoto, and I could not see anywhere in the iPhoto help where it says it does.
Here's the text from the Help file (emphasis mine):
"Choosing what happens when you click the Edit button
When you want to edit a photo, you can have the photo open in one of four ways: in the same window, in a separate window, in full-screen view, or in another application..
Under Edit Photo, select one of the following options:
In main window: Opens the photo in edit view in the main viewing area.
In separate window: Opens the photo in edit view in a separate window.
Using full screen: Opens the photo in full-screen edit view.
In application: Opens the photo in another application you choose, such as Aperture or Photoshop."
Anyway, thanks for confirming that it really doesn't work now. Probably it never did, there was just an error in the documentation.

  • Exporting more than 4 pics at a time w/ PS Elements as external editor

Has anyone heard or read or know who to contact regarding iPhoto allowing more than 4 pictures to be exported at one time when using PS Elements as an external editor?
Currently you can only transfer a maximum of 4 pictures at a time from iPhoto to PS Elements. Is this also the case if Aperture is used as an external editor?
I general take 50-100 pictures at a time and first like viewing them in iPhoto before I begin to edit them w/ PS Elements. With this many pictures it is quite cumbersome getting them all to PS Elements.
I have thought of eliminating my us of iPhoto altogether but love it's organizational features and do not what to lose that.
Any suggestion for a work around?
    Thanks,

If you want to be able to send more than 4 to PSE, then
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
is the way to let them know.
I don't think that Aperture will work as an external editor , it's not a PSE substitute, more iPhoto on serious steroids. It might be worth exploring if it can send more than 4 shots to PSE at a time. Check on the Aperture forum.

  • External editors and read-only folders

I'm trying to use LR4 to work on NEF images I'd imported from a read-only directory. While regular LR4 editing works, using an external editor doesn't because LR4 insists on trying to write a file into that read-only directory. Is there a way to persuade LR4 to put the files it uses to communicate with external editors somewhere else? I intentionally want to keep my NEF directories read-only because they're synced with other programs (which would get upset by LR4 sneaking extra files in there) and because I don't want to accidentally alter anything there.

    Not for secondary editors.
Only the primary Photoshop CSx can open a file wihtout creating it first. Then tiy ba use Save As from Photoshop to choose another location.

  • Allow external editor file name template to be customized

Currently, only a global name can be set. I'd like to have the ability to set a global name that can be overriden in the settings for particular external editors. For example, if I use the Nik SilverEfexPro plugin as one external editor, it may be useful to specify the external file to be named something like
    <filename>-SilverEfexPro.jpg

  • How do I make Photoshop the external editor

I upgraded to snow leopard and now the "Edit in External Editor" option is grayed out in iPhoto. How do I choose Photoshop as my external editor?
I tried opening the pictures in Photoshop, editing them and then saving them - but the changes don't show up in the iPhoto file. How can I save the changes to the iPhoto file?

In the iPhoto preferences you set PS as the external editor - when you finish editing you save (not save as) - and the photos is returned to iphoto and the iPhoto database correctly updated to keep the original and the modified version
iPhoto has the capability to directly interface with any external editor - simply go to the iPhoto preferences (iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> General and set the Edit photo option to in external editor - select the desired external editor and you are set - now when you edit photos they are sent to the selected external editor and when you are finished editing you save (not save as) and the edited photo is returned to iPhoto, the original is maintained in iPhoto and the iPhoto database is correctly updated.
If you want the option of editing in either iPhoto or the external editor after selecting your external editor simply set the edit in back to main window - now when you right click (control Click) on a photo you will get a menu which allows you to select either.

  • Fuji Raw Conversion Software as External Editor in Lightroom

Anyone know whether Fuji's Hyper Utility RAW conversion software (if I remember the name correctly) will work as an External Editor in Lightroom. (Just read an article by a Nikon photographer who uses Capture NX this way in Lightroom and wonder whether the same is possible for Fuji.)

Thanks; I guess my question (which I did not state clearly) is whether if, at the end of processing in HV-S3 and "Save" the saved file (likely a TIFF) will automatically appear in the Lightroom Library associated with the original RAW file; this would be the chief advantage over just opening the folder with the file in HV-S3 to begin with, but it occurs to me that this may be a dumb question (as I've just downloaded and begun to use Lightroom and can't experiment with HV-S3 yet as it has not yet been released, but will be shortly). Thanks again.

  • External editor file naming question

This topic was covered about a year ago, with 1.1, but I am wondering if there is a solution with1.5:
When I open a file in an external editor (CS3), the file name reverts to the master file name, not the version name. Is there any way to get Aperture to use the version name?
I typically shoot multiple bird species on a single card, so when I download them, I am unable to get my preferred file name for each file on import.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated,
    Thanks,

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).
