Annotations in a protected PDF document - ipad

I have a protected PDF document - Not password protected.
The document was emailed, I have saved and opened using the Adobe Reader app on my ipad.
I am unable to make comments or annotations to the document as the "cloud" is grey.
The creator of the document informs me that the document was saved with the capablity of making comments but cannot be edited.
How do I go about unprotecting the document so I can make comments/notes.
The Ipad is the new version and Adobe Reader is version 10.3.0

The Adobe Reader for iPad/iPhone is restrictive about modifying PDF's with signatures or certification applied. This is because we don't have the capability to re-sign or recertify, nor do we have the capability to make sure we only overwrite areas that will not "break" the existing signature. If you can share the document, I should be able to tell you why we're preventing this particular document from being edited. I suspect that it's the protection - we may disallow editing for all protected documents.

No way to do that using the OS (although the entire pdf can be encrypted, once the password is applied the document is open for copying/printing).
However, the freeware PDFLab does allow password protection, the 'owner' pw allows full access, the 'user' pw can be restricted for printing, copying, etc:

This can also be done with Adobe's Create PDF Online, but the above is free, and works well.

Why modification protected PDF documents cannot be indexed by IFilter 11 with SharePoint Search?

Hello everyone!
I have a SharePoint farm which stores a big number of protected PDF documents. Those PDF documents are protected against modification and printing! They allow copy of content and screen readers though.
I had IFilter 9.0 installed and I saw that none of my protected documents could be found... I decided to upgrade the IFilter to its latest version (11) in order to be sure it was not something which was already fixed.
Problem is that even with IFilter 11, my protected PDF documents are still not indexed! Is that a limitation of the IFilter? What kind of security configuration does the IFilter component supports?

I will try to be the most complete possible on the security settings of my document:
I do NOT ask a password in order to open the file
I do ask a password in order to modify the document:
Printing allowed: NONE
Modification allowed: NONE
Activate the copy of the text, pictures and other content: Checked
Activate the access to the text by screen readers: Checked
Options
Compatibility is set on Acrobat 7 and later
Encrypt the entire document option is checked
When I apply those settings, save the document and then open the security settings tab with Acrobat Pro I see that everything is forbidden except the three following options:
Copy of the content
Copy of the content for accessibility
Extraction of the pages
When I close the document and open it again with Acrobat Pro or Reader I see that only two options are enabled this time:
Copy of content
Copy of content for accessibility
So basically it seems the PDF document looses the Extraction of the pages privilege once I close Adobe Acrobat Pro.
PS: I am translating the security options from French so they may not be the exact ones you see on your Acrobat Pro if you have it in English.

Unable to open LiveCycle-protected pdf document with Reader 9 (ok with Reader 8)

Hello,
I installed a LiveCycle server for the Right management module.
But I have the following problem :
- I can protect and save pdf documents with Acrobat Pro 8 (connecting with the server LiveCycle Update 1)
- I can open the document using a RSA authentication using Adobe Reader 8.
- BUT I cannot open the document using Adobe Reader 9. First I'm asked if i authorize the connection to livecycle server, thenthe error message appears
"an error occured while performing this operation. Contact an administrator if this problem continues".
I posted the same message in the Adobe Reader forum, but i was redirected in this section.
Do you have an idea of what causes this problem ?

Adobe Reader for iOS cannot open IRM-protected PDF documents.

Hi,
trying to open IRM-protected documents on an iPhone or iPad.
(Reader-version is 10.1.0 (49458) - on iOS5 final).
When X509-authentication and anonymous authentication is switched on,
there is an error-message, that the connection to the IRM-server failed.
When only "Username/Password" authentication is switched on,
there comes an different error like "Error opening the document".
In this case, LiveCycle-WWW Server only shows two successful calls to server/info/ , but the next POST to /rmws/rest/secure/license/consume is missing

which authentication-methods are supported for IRM-docs on iOS?

I have tried testing this and have had mixed results... I was able to successfully open an RM'd PDF from one server, but receive a connection error when trying to access a document protected by a second RM server that I have access to. The error reads...
"Access to this document is restricted by this remote server: xxxx.xxxx.com, however we are unable to connect to it at this time. Please try to open it later. If you continue to see this message, check whether your device is supported by the server."
Is this the same error that you are seeing?
What version of Rights Management (LiveCycle) are you using? Can you access the server that LiveCycle is running on over HTTPS from a browser? This will help determione if the SSL certificate is trusted on the device.
I am testing using Reader for Android version is 10.1.0 (49458)

Are you trying to add any comment to the document, if yes then you can.
But if you want to edit the content of document then that's not possible.

Opening a protected pdf document on my iPhone

I can access a website at work using Safari, but the document I want to read is a pdf with a password req'd to open it....I can't get the usual dialogue box to appear that will let me enter the password...any ideas?

You will need to use an iCloud enabled app to open it. I'm not personally aware of an iCloud enabled PDF reader, but I'm sure if there's not one out there now, there will be soon.

Unlocking a protected PDF document

I recently downloaded some knitting patterns that I had paid for. Now, when I try to open them, they say they are protected & want a password.
I didn't set them up that way. How do I unlock them?

That sounds like a frustrating situation! If the PDF files are password-protected, it will be impossible to open them without the correct password. I recommend getting in touch with whomever you bought the patterns from; whoever created the PDF file should know the correct passwords or how to find them. I am trying to open a pdf document which is a course qualification handbook.
I have been able to open other pdf documents in the adobe reader app, any suggestions how I can open the above document.
I am using an IPad mini.

Is the course qualification handbook "protected" in any way? For example, to limit the access to the content, a protected PDF document may prompt you to enter user name and password or use some proprietary technology to obscure the content.
Adobe Reader mobile products (Adobe Reader for iOS, Android, Windows Phone) do not support eBooks, protected PDFs, etc.
Would you try opening the course qualification handbook in the desktop version of Adobe Reader on your Windows or Mac computer and see what happens?
