Announcing the 2007 Application Express Training Conference

All,
Sumner Technologies, LLC in conjunction with ODTUG will be sponsoring a 2 or 3 day ApEx Training Conference sometime in early 2007. This training conference will be held in conjunction with Steven Feuerstein's PL/SQL conference. (http://oracleplsqlprogramming.com/opp2005.php)
Very few details have been worked out yet - heck, we don't even have a real name! What we do know is that we're targeting sometime in February 2007, most likely in San Francisco. The conference will also have some members of the Oracle ApEx Development team participating. I do not know how much it will cost at this point, either.
The format will likely be 1/3 lecture, 2/3 hands-on training. We have not finalized a list of topics yet - that's what this thread is all about. Please reply and let us know what you'd like to spend some time on - from themes to security, or anything in between.
Our thought was to cater to the more advanced users of ApEx, but I'd be interested to see if there are enough "newbies" who would consider attending if we were to offer an Intro to ApEx track.
Thanks,
- Scott -

I have literally just started "playing" with APEX on the oracle hosted site, while working at getting it installed in one of my crash and burn sandboxes, for a little proof-of-concept work.
I definitely think this is a great idea, but if the sessions end up leaning towards the advanced users, I doubt I'd benefit from many of theml. A bit off topic, but as an example, I'm having a bugger of a time just getting an uploaded image to display on a report page... have read the forums, read the help, scanned through the Oracle Press "Handbook" and I'm still stumped.
I would suggest a "track" that takes you from start to finish in building an application.... when to use the wizards versus when it's better to do it manually... how to tweak a wizard built application.
Building a pure reporting application versus one which provides the CRUD functionality.... and allowing the user to dynamically "filter" the data displayed on a report page based on text values, date ranges, etc. (thanks to Scott's TRACKER application I managed to figure out the text part -- but will that perform when I have 30-100K rows of data?)
How to migrate a 1.x application to 2.x or 3.x
I'm sure I'll have other thoughts as I play more with the tool.
Other logistical considerations...
- the more reasonable the price, the more likely you'll get attendees that have to pay for it out of their own pocket
- including the weekend as conference days minimizes the amount of vacation we'll need to take when our management won't pay us for a training day
- Airfares are pretty expensive these days...consider taking the end result on the road [ Mid-Atlantic is drivable for me ;-)  ]

  • Need help on installing Oracle Application express 3.2

    Hi,
I had downloaded Oracle 11g database and installed the personal edition.I got the Enterprise manager login page working and also the DBConsole
I had Downloaded APEX 3.2 and wanted to install apex 3.2.I wanted to do the following scenario
Scenario 3: Install from the Database and Configure the Embedded PL/SQL
    Gateway
Planning to do these steps: ( I have few questions on these steps and are below each step)
    ■ Running the apxconf.sql Configuration Script
Do I have to install Oracle Application express or is it already installed in 11g personal edition?
Do I have to create a seperate database or schema for this step( I have only one instance orcl1) ?■ Verifying the Oracle XML DB HTTP Server Port
Can I do this step in my current orcl1 instance,if so which user■ Enabling Oracle XML DB HTTP Server
Once I carry out these steps, Can I access the admin page for apex with https://localhost:port/apex_admin ?
Am I missing any other steps ?
    Thanks

    I have one idea..
    Try to install again:
    1) download and unzip apex_3.2 in $ORACLE_HOME
    You will have:
    $ORACLE_HOME/apex - old directory
    $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2 - new directory
    2) in command line go to $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2/apex
    run sqlplus "/as sysdba"
    in sqlplus run @apexins tablespace_apex tablespace_files tablespace_temp images
    Where:
tablespace_apex is the name of the tablespace for the Oracle Application Express application user.
tablespace_files is the name of the tablespace for the Oracle Application Express files user.
tablespace_temp is the name of the temporary tablespace.
images is the virtual directory for Oracle Application Express images. To support future Oracle Application Express upgrades, define the virtual image directory as /i/.
    Example:
    @apexins SYSAUX SYSAUX TEMP /i/
    3) check installation log for errors
    4) in command line go to $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2/apex
    run sqlplus "/as sysdba"
    in sqlplus run @apxconf
    set admin password
    set port
    5) run @apxldimg.sql $ORACLE_HOME/apex_3.2
    6) check for running listener and try to login apex: http:\\host:port\apex\apex_admin
    Good luck!

  • Problem Accessing Application Express

    Hi All,
I have installed Oracle 11g and Apex 3.2.
After that I tried to access apex admin console using url: http://server:8080/apex/apex_admin
If I try to open the page with IE and when used id : admin and its password is entered and pressed login, an error "Object expected, code 0" is generated.
With Firefox I can see more detail error "doSubmit is not defined.
    Please help.
    Regards
    Rana

Hey I'm having the same problem, but I may be a little confused.
I had 11g installed with Apex 3.0 so I upgraded it to 3.2.1 by using the complete installation. So when the install guide says "Run apex_epg_config.sql passing the file system path to the base directory where the Oracle Application Express software was unzipped", I should point to the Oracle home location where my db is installed...right?
Assuming this is correct, I ran the script but the apex/images folder is still missing the apex_..._.js files mentioned before. All the image files are there but when I try to login nothing happens. Are those js files supposed to be there? Any ideas?

    Hello,
    Take a look here -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
There are links to different version of APEX (as well as many other APEX related documents/links etc).

    About Migrations

    User,
    What is your name?
It sounds like you've been configured as a developer, not a workspace administrator. You'll need to talk to the person that created your account.

  • What has happened to Application Express Studio?

Application Express Studio (http://htmldb.oracle.com/studio) appears to be dead. The most recent posting to it was about 13-DEC-05. Why? There is no link to it from the OTN Application Express web page. Maybe that is one reason.
    Mike

Well, I think the problem is that very few people ever actually contributed to it (myself included). When you see something like -
"Time Tracking System (Added 1.7 years ago)"
In the "Most Recent" section, then there is little enthusiasm for people to post something of their own. It is a strange thing, but if there was 1000 applications, themes etc there then 'someone' might be more tempted to upload something of their own, however that means that 999 people before them would have needed to feel the same way.
It's exactly the same with the Unofficial APEX Wiki (http://wiki.shellprompt.net/bin/view/Apex/WebHome) that I host, it lives and dies on contributions from people. If nobody contributes then it ceases to be useful, if it ceases to be useful then people won't contribute...it's a vicious circle.
But, as I said, I'm as guilty of not contributing to the Studio as anyone else.
    John.

  • Minimum resources for Oracle Application Express

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and a bit confuse here trying to find an answer to what supposedly is a simple question:
What kind of resources do I have to have to develop and deploy screens with Oracle Application Express?
    The scenario:
I have this Oracle application all created in forms that we are planning to give to our customers in a web based.
I'm looking for options to convert it and many forums are talking about how easy and inexpensive (free) the Oracle Applications Express is.
Then, talking with my main developer, he told me that in order to use it, the client need to spend quite a while in IAS (Oracle's Internet Application Server) and/or have to have the Enterprise version.
I'm looking for white papers on that and could not find any corroboration, but just texts telling that it's free and easy to use.
Any one can point me to the right directions on this issue?
Just want to know what exaclty do I need in order to use (creating and deploying) the Applications Express.
Right now I have Standar Edition 10q as well as my client
    THank you

If you want to develop an intranet web application, the HTTP server that comes with Standard Edition 10q would do. However, if you are thinking of it as an internet application then you better separate DB and web server. In that case you need to have either Oracle HTTP Server or Oracle Application Express Listener. Oracle HTTP server requires a license and usually bundled with DB or an Application Server. I believe Oracle Application Server is no longer being offered/available instead web logic server is made available. The basic edition of web logic would do as all you require is Oracle HTTP Server to broker the requestes between the web and the database. As far as I know, Oracle HTTP server is not being offered standalone. As mentioned above the other alternative is Oracle Application Express Listener but requires one of the J2EE complaint web servers like web logic, Glassfish, OC4J or TOMCAT.
    Hope this helps!

  • Password rejected by by Application Express

I am a newbie in programming. I downloaded the oracle application express 11g release. I did install it and used it to practice until I logged out. When I came back, I couldn't login using my known credentials. After much battling, I reinstalled it, this time creating a new workspace and new credentials but still to no avail, it still rejected my password. Below is the message it gave.
Enter Application Express workspace and credentials
    "Invalid Login Credentials"
    Pls what could be wrong?
    Zion

Huh, here's how I see it.
You downloaded and installed Oracle 11g XE database and used to use it by navigating to http://127.0.0.1:8080
Then you downloaded and installed (actually, upgraded) Application Express. As far as I can tell, once you did that, a fancy and good looking Oracle 11 XE homepage is no longer available. That's too bad, but - that's the way it is.
Now you can practice your Apex skills (as most of us do; you asked "why an I mentioning Apex"? Well, this IS an Apex forum, after all). You can practice your (PL/)SQL skills as well, but not as you used to. I'd suggest you to use SQL*Plus (it is a command line tool). If you don't like typing and prefer GUI, download and install (free) SQL Developer (from the OTN site), or any other GUI tool (most of which are not free). You might even use Application Express' SQL Workshop, if you wish.
Now, if I got it wrong, I'm afraid I can't do much about it ... hopefully, someone else will know better.

  • 3.1 EA3: Application Express Export/Quick DDL fails

I've tried all of the options to create DDL for applications under the Connections > Application Express menu but I keep getting a blank sheet as the output.
Using the export option (on either pages or application level), it results in a file with the export header only (file created - Date).
There are similar results with the quick DDL options.
I am using Apex 4.0.1 if this helps.

I have filed bug and the problem is fixed for our next release. Thanks.

  • Problem while importing the application in application express 3.0

    Hi Friends
We have developed an application in a workspace say X. I imported the complete application in different workspace Y and the import was successfully. Now if I export a single page from that application in workspace X and import in workspace Y, then it gives me error as
"This page was exported from a different application or from an application in different workspace. Page cannot be installed in this application."
Also I tried changing the application id in the export file but did not work.
Is their a workaround for this?
(We are using application express 3.0.0.00.20)
    Thanks
    Minakshi

    Hi Scott
1 ) Page exports are to be imported into an application having the same ID as the source application in the same named worskpace.
But the problem is I cannot have same application id in the same workspace or in different workspaces even. I exported the complete application from workspace X with application id as 555 and tried importing the application in workspace Y with the same application id. But that does not work since it throws the error message as the same application id cannot reside in 2 different workspaces.
    2) You don't say whether workspaces X and Y are in the same or different databases.
Both the workspaces X and Y are in the same database. The database user/schema that is associated with workspaces X and Y are different.
    3) Also I tried changing the application id in the export file but did not work.
Following is the extract of the page that i tried importing. The places wherever it is marked BOLD, i modified them in the original page export sql file.
    --application/set_environment
    prompt APPLICATION 500 - Load_Factor_System
    -- Application Export:
    -- Application: 500
    -- Name: Load_Factor_System
    -- Date and Time: 15:52 Wednesday May 16, 2007
    -- Exported By: ADMIN
    -- Flashback: 0
    -- Export Type: Page Export
    -- Version: 3.0.0.00.20
    -- SET APPLICATION ID
    wwv_flow.g_flow_id := 500;
    wwv_flow_api.g_id_offset := 0;
    null;
In case you need further clarifications, please let us know.

  • How to stop and start only the process of Oracle Application Express?

I'd like to know how to stop the process of Oracle Application Express on my server installed oracle express package.
After installed Oracle Express edition, not only oracle database server processes but also Oracle Application Express, such as http server, is started automatically...
I hope to stop and start Application Express on demand but is this feature enabled?

Oracle Apex is an API, if that helps you understand / visualize. You do not start Apex process nor stop it.
When an Apex session starts it starts calling the API.
You can however start / stop the listener. It may be OHS, ApexListener and the J2EE container running it, OC4J or any other "server" that you are using.
The built-in EPG is something like an API again, you cannot start / stop it but you can disable/enable it with DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT API.

  • Basic problem in displaying the pdf and images in Application express

    Hi,
I have oracle 10g and application express.
I have already stored the images and pdfs using PLSQL in table with following columns
TableA(vessel number, cruise number, image blob, pdf blob)
now for every vessel, cruise combination there is a particular image and pdf.
    so in my htmldb page.
I have created 2 select list for vessel and cruise respectively.
now on selecting these lists i want to diaplay their corresponding image and pdf.
How can i do this? I just somehow miss the basic knowledge of how to do this.
Should i create a html region or a report region for the image and pdf.
under what region the image and pdf goes. and on sleecting the vessel, cruise can i show hyperlinks and upon selecting the hyperlinks a image and pdf opens in a new window.
or can i create 2 regions and display the image and pdf right in the region itself.
Can someone please guid eme please.
    Thanks,
    Philip.

    Hi Philip.
I suggest switching to the Application Express forum.
Pretty sure it'll be easier for you to find the answers over there

  • Is Oracle Application Express the same of Oracle Database Express Edition (

    Hi,
    perhaps a silly question.
I've tried to download Oracle Application Express. Before of installing it, I've noticed that looking at the About the Create Application Manual it looks like the Application Builder that I already use with the web-based page for Oracle Database 10g XE (Express Edition). But thus is Oracle Application Express the same of using Application Builder of Oracle Database 10g XE? To me it seems so, but I'd like to be sure of that
    Thanks!

oracle database XE 10g include APEX installed, version 2.... i don't remember exactly
Oracle database sinde 11g includes APEX installed too
Yes, APEX have a tab with application builder, there you create applications, but the version is very old, install Oracle DB XE 11g or upgrade APEX
