Announcing the Audition for the Mac public beta

We are very pleased to announce that Adobe Audition for the Mac is now available for public beta. (You can see the press release here.) We encourage you to give it a try and provide us with feedback.
Audition will be shipped on both Windows and Mac OS when the time  comes, but given that Mac OS is a new platform for Audition it is  important we gather as much feedback and testing as possible in order to  make this is a great product for all users.
Visit the Adobe Audition Labs page for download information and more details: http://www.adobe.com/go/audition_labs.

Okay, some answers. Yes, this is only a Mac beta. This is simply because no version of Audition for the Mac has ever been released, and it appears to be Mac-based comments they are looking for at present.
The press release is still there - it hasn't been withdrawn because it's effectively out in the wild now - what would be the point of withdrawing it? Anyway, in it is the line " Adobe is providing audio editors and video professionals with more choices for audio production". So it's very clear that how this is achieved is an issue, at least - it has to be to fulfil the intention of that statement. But in the present beta release, integration is not present, as you have discovered. I can't comment any more about that, and I'm not sure that the staffers can either - we are all under a degree of gagging about anything that isn't in the press release, or Jason Levine's video, pretty much.
If you want to find out a bit more than you will on this forum about some of the new audio-related aspects of the release, then read or participate in the AudioMasters thread about it - here. If you read the thread, you will find out why...

iCloud is not designed for sharing data with other people: you will need a third-party alternative such as DropBox or Sugarsync.

  • Home music recording- is the Mac Pro better for this than an iMac?

I know it seems like a daft question but if you were to recommend a Mac for a DECENT home studio and money were (within reason) nearly no object WHAT Mac would you recommend? I always believed that a good sized desktop would be better than an iMac or a MacBook Pro (which is what I have been using for just a hobby home recording set-up) but is this a myth?
Please advise because the Mac Pro looks SCARY. I mean- the options are vast but what DO I NEED as opposed to want? Thank you kindly for reading.

I guess there is nothing wrong with the set-up except that the MacBook Pro is mine and the musicians need their own as I need mine for work.
Ah, I see. I think an iMac should be sufficient. Just be sure to get more RAM than the stock 1GB. Apple's prices on RAM are pretty severe compared to other vendors, so I'd recommend adding RAM after purchase. If you search the iMac forum for "RAM UK", you should find recommendations on reliable vendors. Don't go with lowest price; there's nothing that can cause you fits with a computer system more than flakey RAM, so you want a vendor with a good reputation for quality. I'd suggest bumping the iMac to the maximum 4GB. As to screen size, I tend to prefer having two screens rather than one big one - you can put palettes on the second monitor - so if it's a choice and desk space is sufficient, consider a 20" iMac and a second 17" or 20" screen to go with it.
If you reckon the interface is enough to do the mic justice and that Logic Express or Pro would do when the musicians know and love Cubase then I am happy to help them learn more Mac-based software and get that instead as it is also cheaper and looks like it would make more sense to ME.
Unless they're wedded to Cubase, I'd think that Logic Express should work quite well. You may all want to take a trip to an Apple reseller and take a look at it.
Unless there is a reason to "upgrade" the interface I guess that is one less item to acquire
An upgrade would seem logical only if the Safire isn't giving the quality you want or there aren't enough inputs.
I'd call your recommendation but I am in the UK and will probably talk to the nice folk at Dolphin Music in Newcastle as that is where I got the interface.
I wasn't sure where you were. If you are located in or near Newcastle-On-Tyne, you can find a list of authorized resellers here, or if you're near Manchester or Sheffield or don't mind taking a paddle down, you can drop by an Apple Store. You can then perhaps preview Logic Express before you decide. You might want to call before you make a special trip just to make sure your dealer can indeed demo LE.
Final recommendation; get really good microphones. Garbage in, garbage out, as they say, and having the right microphone, one that's suited for the instrument that's being recorded, is vital. The Neumann is of course high quality, but if you haven't already purchased, check around. You can find really good mics for less than Neumann charges; unless things have changed, you pay a bit of a premium for their reputation. AKG used to make really good mics, quite well suited for piano and acoustic guitar in particular, and there are no doubt others as well (my knowledge of specific models is rather out of date).
    Cheers.

  • What is the best spyware/virus protection program for the mac?

I'm new to the whole virus protection thing, and I know there are very few viruses out there for the mac, but better safe then sorry right? Plus i'm mainly getting it for the spyware protection anyway. Does Leopard already have some protection for it? Or would it be better to buy a new program? Thanks.

Normally the best defense against Virus and other scrap on the net is the User. Never agree to open something you are not sure about. Don't visit dangerous sites, and think twice before make a gesture.
After almost 25 years on Mac, and with X system, the only use for a AntiVirus is you can pass Virus to PC user but that ot effect your Mac. If you use Parallels or Bootcmp (or booth) you need a AntiVirus and Anti what the need on the PC, because that take 20 minutes on PC to be infected.

  • SBSH Calendar Pro public beta released - available for free download!

    Hi all!
We've just released our first version of SBSH Calendar Pro, initially released today as public beta and available for free download to all users!
In a nutshell, the goal of Calendar Pro is to offer a powerful personal information manager (PIM) that replaces the built-in Calendar and Tasks applications on your BlackBerry device with a more robust time management system. Calendar Pro brings integrated display and management that allow you to manage both appointments and tasks in one solution, innovative item editing dialogs with: tab-based interface, full screen note preview, field-icons and much more!
While in initial public beta stages the application is available for free download (and also doesn't include any future limitations, so it will continue to operate). It is important to mention that future versions of the application are planned to be commercial eventually (this is something I believe is important to clear), but at these initial stage we would like to get many users to help us with feedback about the application development and in return we decided to go with this free public beta phase that we hope will help us receive more feedback from our users in return
Users that would like to read more about the new public beta version can find the complete information and download details at the following URL:
    http://forums.sbsh.net/index.php?showtopic=24629
As mentioned above, if you decided to take Calendar Pro for a try we invite you to post back with your experience and please be sure to post back with any new ideas, features requests and so on that you have - with this information we will structure upcoming public beta versions that will be out every week or so from now, and hopefully within a few more updates we will also get closer to the first official release.
The road for the new Calendar Pro is still long (we are aware to this), but we hope that with the help of our users we will be able to bring a new fine product to the market! We really hope that you will enjoy the new PIM application and that indeed there is a need for such new applications in the BlackBerry market as we think there is
    Cheers!
Message Edited by Avishay on 02-23-2009 04:51 AM

    Good day all!
As we continue with the development of Calendar Pro for BlackBerry I'm excited to post today a new public beta version of Calendar Pro to version 0.9.2!
Following the successful release of the first public beta version we've moved forward in full speed and implemented with this new public beta version many of the features that were raised by our users here on the forums along with many bug fixes that were reported since the first public beta version was released a few weeks ago. Similar to the first public beta version, this new public beta version is also available as free download to all users - you will find the download links for the new version towards the bottom of my post here!
For those of you who still didn't had a chance to check the first version release of Calendar Pro we invite you to Click here to read the first public beta version release post to get more familiar with Calendar Pro.
What's new in Calendar Pro 0.92?
    1. Monthly view and Weekly view receives a new preview pane!
With this new version both the Monthly view and the Weekly view now include a new preview pane placed at the bottom of the views, allowing you to easily see what are the events for the currently selected day (on the Monthly view) or the currently highlighted item (for the Weekly view). The new preview pane addition greatly enhances the overall usability of the two views by bringing more real content to the user when using these views. Using the Weekly view without the preview pane as with the previous version didn't provide much information to the user and therefore we are positive that this addition will be really important for users and hope you will enjoy this new addition!
    2. Task Remidners
Following a lot of requests for such addition, the new version finally introduce task reminders support! This means you can now also configure reminder values for your tasks easily within Calendar Pro task editors We plan to continue and enhance this direction some more with future upcoming update and would love to hear your input on this section and how things are working here too.
    3. Full task category editing capabilities
Using the new version you will now also enjoy complete task category editing capabilities such as adding new categories, editing existing category names and deleting exiting categories from your list of categories
At this stage categories management is only available for tasks due to some technical limitation that we are having, but we are working to see how we can have this added for appointments too with upcoming public beta versions of course
    4. And much more!
As with any new version you will find lots of additional improvements and bug fixes! I'm afraid that we don't have a specific list of all of these changes that were implemented with this new latest version, but you should be able to find many of the different various reports fixed with this new version and things working far better! We of course plan to continue working towards this direction with our upcoming updates and continue and develop Calendar Pro to become a robust time management solution for BlackBerry users
Downloading Calendar Pro for BlackBerry 0.92
Calendar Pro can be downloaded for free for all of our forum registered members. Users who are not registered to our forums can register our forums for free by Clicking here! .Registering our forums should take a few moments.
We request users to register our forums in order to download Calendar Pro with the hope that this will be a good incentive or users to post back at our forums after trying Calendar Pro and give us their feedback on the first public beta, what features would they like to see and together help us push the development in the best direct possible while we will continue to introduce new public beta versions in upcoming weeks. Since our users feedback is very important to us we hope that users who will register our forums will be posting back with their experience this way Your feedback is highly important to us as part of the development process.
Click here to go to the Calendar Pro download page and download the latest version
    * When upgrading from the previous version we recommend to uninstall the previous version before installing this new update.
We are looking forward here for your input about the new version and we will highly appreciate all input possible that will help us with the design of the upcoming updates!
    Cheers!

  • I can't launch Safari Public Beta on my XP box....

Hello world, after I installed safari on my PC for the first time, and I launched it. I receive the error messages. "Safari Web Browser has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and I always press "Send Error Report". I hope the future Public Beta 2 may be different from the beta version I used.

... not that this question would be of any immediate help, Harry ... but is this the crash happening on the same PC where you were getting the similar crash with your iTunes 7.2.0.34?
is anyone else who was getting the iTunes 7.2.0.34 crash described in the following document:
iTunes 7.2 for Windows doesn't open
... (the version of this that was fixed in 7.2.0.35, that is), also getting Harry's "Safari Web Browser has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" message with the current public beta?

  • CS3 Public Beta - MacTel - Plug-Ins

How many developers have downloaded the CS3 public beta?
How many developers have downloaded the CS3 public beta SDK?
How many developers have their plug-ins running natively on MacTel? UniversalBinary?
I would like to hear your pain points and what I can do in the SDK to make life easier for future developers trying to move from CodeWarrior to XCode.
One big pain point I know of is debugging. Trying to debug a plug-in in XCode is very difficult. Does anyone have any tricks they can share? I know of two: 1) become a gdb expert (not an easy task), 2) use DebugStr(foo); and that will stop XCode if you have Break on DebugStr turned on.

Debugging works for me using the following:
    - ALL binaries involved are for a single platform, including XCode, the debugger, and the host. I only get it working for intel binaries on intel machines involving all intel apps. Trying to debug PS in PPC mode for PPC plugin binary on intel fails. The debugger then reports that it can not determine the binary type of the executable (PS).
    - Photoshop points to the build directory to look for the plugin binary. I have my build directory set to a custom repository folder, so it does not necessarily have to be the project folder as far as I can tell.
    - Obviously, a plugin project requires an added executable = Photoshop. I have no additional settings, vars or scripts.
    - In the XCode project settings, make sure that ALL optimization options are OFF. These are not OFF by default, even though the projects come with a default "debug" setting.
TIP: You can select the project file and make settings, and you can select the target file and make settings. The latter overwrites the former. I have the target settings set to have NO custom settings whatsoever. This ensures that there is only one place where I make settings which are dense enough as it is...
    - Breaking works on the first invocation of the plugin only. With subsequent invocations the link is lost, which I presume has something to do with PS unloading the binary. I recall a similar problem back in the old days of components where a glue component was suggested to do your own loading and unloading of code.
    As for pains:
My biggest issue currently is obsolescence of the host technology for Filter plugins.
    - When processing events in the plugin GUI, I frequently receive the same event during host callbacks while I'm still processing the initial event.
    - In addition the host still requires a Quickdraw environment which isn't really available anymore.
    - If display pixels would support some additional bit depths, it would significantly reduce the complexity of plugin GUIs and the number of internal plugin buffers. It would also overcome the problem of displaying 32bit linear data...!
    On the Apple OS side:
    - I have implemented a GUI in Cocoa which works fine (don't tell Chris ;-) ). However, there is a problem with inter window communication.
In general I also believe that the FilterRecord struct is getting a bit aged and overcrowded. A newly designed and more robust interface might be welcome. Splitting up certain functions between new types of filter plugins perhaps...
Oh, and did I mention re-entrancy yet?

  • What happens when the trial ends? (Audition for Mac)

Might be a silly question - forgive me, I'm a novice.
I just downloaded Audition for Mac - and was surprised that it's free!
And when the public beta trial ends - do you lose all your sessions? are you given first dibs for upgrading to the new paid-for software?
One last one - What can't you do on this version that you can do on Audition 3.0 for Windows?
    Thanks!

    AnnaMChapman wrote:

When the public beta ends, you have to purchase a copy of the release version. You will find that the beta version suddenly won't work any more... and I would imagine that you'll get the same purchase options as everybody else. As for session loss - well you won't lose them if you purchase the software; they'll still open fine.
One last one - What can't you do on this version that you can do on Audition 3.0 for Windows?
That's a much more complicated question to answer - simply because we haven't made a definitive list yet, and for non-disclosure reasons I can't say anything more than Adobe has already made public. The one thing that's hacking off a lot of AA3.0 users at present is that it is confirmed that the new version won't write CDs directly, though. Also it's a matter of public knowledge that there will be no MIDI sequencing capability either, but personally I'd have that as a gain, not a loss! For a lot of Mac users though, none of this will be an issue because they never had it in the first place; therefore they can hardly miss it...

  • Can I get the Mac address in Audit logs of Active directory server for the user's machine which connect to the network/Domain

    Hello All,
I am trying to get the information of all the user's who connect to our Domain network by signing in using the domain account. For this I am using the Windows audit group policies ( I am not sure of there is any other way). I can see when the user tries
to login to the network there is a audit event created on the AD/DC server. I can see the Kerberos authentication and logon/logoff events in the audit events under event viewer.
However the info which is being populated in these events include :- Hostname, IP address, Username and so on... But I can't see the MAC address of the user machine/system. Is there any way I can
get the Mac address of the endpoint system as its one of the important criteria for our project.
Any inputs on this would be appreciated, incase if there is any other way other than group policies please suggest.
    Thanks,

If you use DHCP, you can query the DHCP server. There's no builtin
method to get the MAC address directly.

I am considering purchasing the Mac mini for home studio audio production using Adobe Audition and a USB microphone.  Will the base mini model run these programs?

The base mini has 4GB and a 5400 RPM hard drive. It is slow to start up and slow to launch large application such as Word (and I'd assume Adobe Audition) due to the slow drive. I've not used a new 4GB model, just the 8GB model, and the 8GB model (except for the slow drive) handles everything I've thrown at it, including running Photoshop, Word, Safari, and Mail at the same time but there is sometimes a delay switching between programs as the swapfile is updated. Overall I was not happy with the 5400 RPM drive (perhaps because I have MBA and iMac with Fusion drive) so I eventually upgraded it with an SSD. Now the mini is truly a warrior.
