Annoying constant freezing problem

Hi,
I have an iBook G4, the problem with mine is that when I have multiple webpages open at the same time it slows down to a crawl and makes weird internal noises. Then multi-coloured Catherine wheel icon appears, sometimes for a short time, sometimes so long that I lose patience and force quit the Safari application.
Please could you tell me what I need to do, if it needs a memory upgrade please could you be specific to my iBook model. I always software update. It not only happens when I have the the Safari application open it can happen when I run 2 applications at the same time and it just makes those constant weird churning noises and if I'm too quick with the cursor it then quickly turns into the Catherine wheel icon.
memory capacity 27.82 GB available 4.25 GB
Thanks for any help.

Well for for now, the transferring of the files is to free up space for troubleshooting, about 10Gb free on internal drive as suggested by Lyssa.
If, when you free up the 10Gb fixes you problem, then it would be time to look into upgrading the Hard drive to a bigger one or putting less seldom used files on an external drive.
I believe Lyssa was asking if you had extra RAM as another alternative to fixing the drive space issue. See if you are able put extra RAM in the Mac it would not be requiring the extra Hard Drive space for caching files.

  • Constant freezing problem

My MacBook Pro has been freezing constantly, especially after the computer's been asleep. The biggest problem is that I haven't been able to use option-apple-esc; it just hasn't worked. So I've had to shut my computer down, sometimes 3-5 times a day. I have OS X 10.4.11 (don't have Leopard yet).
To give you all as much info as possible, this started occurring after I did an archive reboot about a month ago. I also have added new software at about or just shortly after the time the freezing started: Retrospect Express, which came with my LaCie external hard drive (I don't like it and will probably remove it anyway), and Endnote for Mac, a bibliography program that works with Word.

Hmm. Not many people on this Apple discussion forum have chimed in on this problem. But there is a long thread about it here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=183058
At least for my MB Pro, the problem may be related to the drivers for the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT. Here's some info on that:
    https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/MacBookPro_2007_Graphics_FreezeWorkaround
If my problem gets worse, I'll probably turn to Tech Tool Pro and run the routines in an endless loop until I can get a report that makes sense.

  • Constant Freezing Problems

I know there have been a lot of topics but I can't get a straight answer. I don't have one of those 7200rpm drives and this only recently started happening. I am getting persistent spinning globes for around a minute or two. Never used to happen. Does not matter if I have applications running. Happens intermittently every 15 minutes or so, sometimes sooner... sometimes further apart. Haven't noticed it happen when I'm not using the computer though. Usually happens when I'm streaming video or doing music or some other function. I downloaded the patch that supposedly addressed this issue. Nothing has worked. I have repaired permissions, etc. I have a 2.53Ghz Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo with 4GB Ram, 320GB HD running 10.5.8. Please help with any advice. What should I check? Should I just backup, reinstall and see what happens? I'm a music maker with a gang of plug-ins so re-authorizations are a ***** in a half but if that's what it is... Thanks in adv. Rashid Duke.

Thank you for your reply. I am even right now experiencing freezing multiple times just writing this text reply. I have 85Gb of unused space left. Yes, I have tried all diagnostic measures. Repaired the disk which stated it seemed ok and repaired permissions. Interestingly, I've noticed that anytime I repair disk permissions there are always corrections needed to be made. They don't go away and always seem to be the same. Also, there are some that warn of some sort of SUID thing and that things are different and won't be repaired. Could this be the cause? If so, what do I do? Thanks...

  • Constant freezes, now cannot install 10.4 without problems

Well, my computer recently started having problems. Constant freezes, the grey screen that comes up and tells me to restart. Application crashes. I could not figure out what the problem was, the only think I have done to the machine recently is add the superdrive from another G4 and put it in mine, that would not cause a problem, would it? Luckly I have a backup drive, so I have not lost everything.
So I thought I would reinstall 10.4, which seemed ok, what the system was install, I tried to do all the updates, but the system update failed, and it could not install the OS X updates. So, I restarted and got a kernal error, and could no longer boot into my new fresh system, strange. So, I tried again, did a complete reinstall, and tried to do a manual upgrade of OS X. I got the dmg file from apple's site, and tried again, at the end of the install, it told me to try again, that there was an error. Restart again, no kernal error, but all I got was the grey apple screen, with the spinning indicator, and it never booted. So I am stumped. What could be causing this on a new install? I am thinking maybe it could be the hard drive. My backup drive that I boot off of is working fine, so I don't think it is any other hardware. Any ideas why a fresh install would start off this way, and continue to cause problems?

Yes, bad RAM can cause all sorts of issues. Replace it and see how it goes. Most good suppliers have lifetime warranties these days. If you can't get it replaced, try a Mac friendly brand such as Crucial. I have had trouble free operation with mine.
    Cheers!

  • MacBook Pro (mid-2009) is a complete mess: constant freezing/crashing

Let me start with a bit of history: I bought my MBP in August 2009, and since then it has gotten progressively more aggravating. The hard drive failed a year ago and I had it replaced in April, and then it failed once again, and got a new one in October (2010), along with a new hard drive cable.
Unfortunately, about two weeks ago, the computer went completely on the fritz. It would freeze (beachball) for no apparent reason, other than when the hard drive was being used, such as going through iTunes, Safari, or Aperture. However, after doing a disk check, both in Disk Utility and using fsck in Single User mode, there were absolutely no errors to be found, which, unlike the two times my hard drive failed, shows that the HDD is indeed okay.
I did an archive and install and it seemed to have helped the problem for a grand total of 2 weeks. This week, my computer starting going at it again, and not even consistently. On Tuesday, it would be just about unusable, beachballing at the slightest "load" (such as opening a third tab in Safari), and that one freeze would bring down the entire system. Everything, even if it's working, is slow and laggy--things like scrolling down or clicking on something might trigger a beachball for a second or two, or just take far too long even with no beachball. After a bunch of forced restarts, my screen began flickering on the edges, most visibly at a high brightness. However, after several more restarts, it quit doing it--this also happened during the first set of crashes two weeks ago.
Yesterday, my computer was more or less fine, and I might've only restarted it once or twice. Today however, we're back to where we were two days ago--constant freezes that all but prohibit me from even going on the internet. The computer gets stuck going to sleep and has trouble waking up. It doesn't respond fully to when I plug it into my Henge Dock (the Henge Dock is not the problem, because the MacBook acts just as badly on its own), in that the display never shows up. One time today, it woke up from sleep, but the menubar icons (SystemUI Server) had crashed, and subsequently everything else as well.
The most confusing part about all this is that there is NOTHING to be seen in Console in terms of any crashes, whether an app, the kernel, or any processes. I also took my computer to the Apple Store this week, and Spotlight didn't work except for maybe a dictionary entry on the term entered (I don't use Spotlight so I never noticed this). Even when booted off an external HDD, that external OS couldn't search my hard drive either, or it was really, really slow at it. More surprising were the results of the hardware test; it came up completely clear, with no errors. The genius suggested I do a clean install of my OS, which is a ridiculous solution, as I had done this last year already and the OS I was running before had been migrated from multiple computers for years beforehand. I'm sure you all well know how big of a pain it is to do that. Otherwise, it's sending the computer over to the Apple depot.
I'm sorry for the extremely long-winded rant/problem descriptions, but I really just want to know from people with perhaps more experience in incomprehensible Mac problems what might be wrong with my computer. I really think it's a deep hardware issue, such as a bad logic board. I'd like to hear some opinions before I back everything off and ship this POS (the most unreliable Mac I've ever owned) to Apple. Thanks so much for reading and I hope somebody can help answer my question!

After opening the computer up the only evidence of where liquid has been is on the corner with hard drive / cd drive etc. There is not evidence of liquid damage to logic board on the otherside of the computer. Hard Drive and Ram have both been replaced.
Obviously there is still a chance liquid has got to the other area and I have not realised it...

  • Did the new MBA fix the overheating/freezing problem??

    hi everyone!
i'd like to ask anyone who has tried out the new MacBook Air: have they fixed the overheating/freezing problem??
i've had 3 MBAs over the 3 years (all different versions) and they were all overheating - i.e. when i was using them for a while and had more internet pages/applications opened they started to get really hot and at some point the computer slowed down to a point where i could not work anymore and had to just close it and let it cool down for a while. playing a youtube video without problems is almost impossible.
i love all the other features of the MacBook Air, but this slowing down is super annoying, especially for someone who spends hours at a computer daily.
plus the other day my friend who has a MacBook Pro asked why my computer was so loud - i never noticed but the fans are just so noisy compared to hers.
so please let me know what are your experiences with the new one compared to the older ones.
    thanks a lot!

I have the high end 13" macbook air that came down to about 2000 cnd. It overheats quite frequently though. I find it the strangest when I am only watching netflix on safari. maybe 2 tabs opened with mail and preview app opened... Dont even have to mention other things.. it heats up when I am coding on Coda.. using photoshop (2 files opened)..
Another thing is that sometimes it doesnt register to the current time immediately. After I wake it up from sleep, I have to wait abotu 3-5 secs until the cursor can respond and the time is corrected (usually the time is at when I closed the macbook air.)
Have you guys heard of these problems?
    Thx

  • Constant freezing after upgrade to 10.6!!

Like the title says ever since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard I've been met with constant freezing on the internet or itunes and on one occassion the system. What do I do? My system overall is a bit slower too.
    Model Name: MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBook5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Memory: 4 GB

    Thanks for your help.
I discovered that there was an issue with the virtual host config files. I am not sure why but the problem passed the Apache startup routine. I discovered the offending VH config file by turning them all off and reactivating them one at a time. The real head scratcher is why I couldn't scan or ping port 80 during the problem.

  • Do I have a bad hard drive? Constant freezes.

I am having constant freezes on my eMac not specific to any one application. Can't do a force quit when this happens and have to hold down start button to shut down. I thought this might mean that my hard drive was going bad, but when I do a safe boot everything seems to be stabilized and so far this evening no freezes. Have run the disk repair utility several times. Also can't print; computer doesn't find printer but I see it in system profiler. I asked a separate question about the print problem in the printer forum, but I mention this here because I wonder if it might also be related to whatever is causing the system to freeze or is this just a coincidence and an independent problem. What do I do about the freeze problem? Thanks for any advice.

probably not a hard drive problem per se, but you could have a corrupted system, or corrupted parameter RAM (PRAM).
1.) you might try erasing the PRAM (I forget how, but you can look it up easily enough)
2.) You also might try an "archive and install" of the system, which preserves your files, but re-installed the OS. Then you need to do the autoupdates.

  • Itunes constant freezing and cannot restart

Hey, I've been having a lot of issues with my itunes for the past week or so. Every few hours or so (sometimes within like 1) my itunes will freeze completely. Once it freezes I'll close it or end the process in Task Manager and it generally shuts down. Now if the constant freezing wasn't enough of an annoyance, the itunes process also hangs in Task Manager after I've shut the program down. I have tried to end the process with taskkill, but it never works. While the process hangs it continues to consume computer memory and I cannot use itunes anymore. It just won't open anymore. The only way around this is to restart the entire computer. (Which is a huge pain!) I'd rather not have to restart my computer every time I want to listen to some music.
    Some things I've tried -
Uninstalling itunes and other apple services completely; normally and by using revo uninstaller on other occassions. Then doing a fresh install.
    Installing older version of itunes.
Using CCleaner to search for errors.
Checking to see if there are any firewall conflicts.
Doing a complete virus scan with Malwarebytes and Avast.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening, and/or know any fixes? If so, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Here's my computer specs -
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
    System Manufacturer: Acer
    System Model: Predator G5900
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU    650  @ 3.20 GHz (4 CPUs), ~ 3.2 GHz
    Memory: 4096MB RAM
Page File: 2366MB used, 5677MB available
    DirectX Version: DirectX 11
    Itunes 10.7.0.21
    Quicktime 7.73.80.64

Figured it out (I think). Seems to be an iTunes problem. I found some articles on this site about bugs in Version 7 so I deleted iTunes from my PC, reinstalled Version 6, drained down my iPod, hooked it back up, restored the OS from Version 6 and now, 3 days later, all seems to be working.
If you have a look over some of the discussions on this site you'll see that this is somewhat of a common occurrence, but Apple don't seem to be admitting it.

  • Constant Freeze/Hang associated with UPD connection attempt

As suggested in another post, I have been monitoring the system logs with Console and the freezes/hangs and beach balls perfectly coincide with numerous (>15/per occurrence) of the following message:
9/7/09 6:21:33 PM Firewall54 Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 10.0.1.6:59119 from 10.0.1.1:53
    Any thoughts?
    Previous Background:
I am experiencing nearly constant freezing/beach balls. I can barely type this as it hangs up every 30 seconds or so. It happens in all applications and the finder. The issue started a few months back (with an update I suspect), and I have since installed SL with negative results.
I have repaired permissions and the disk from the SL install disk and checked the hardware with the original system disks: all with no problems reported. Activity Monitor shows 27 GB free space on the HD, more than half the memory available and minimal CPU activity. Also, reset the PRAM again with no improvement.
Not sure where to head from here, aside from installing SL from a clean disk...

A quick update to my issue: after more than 7 phone calls to Apple Tech Support, (who were more than helpful!) it took the macbook into the local repair shop. Turns out while the HDD did not fail any diagnostic test, replacing the HDD cured all issues.
Thanks again to those that offered assistance; and after all that I got an upgraded HDD 120 GB to 320 GB... could have been worse!

  • I know how to fix the iTunes 7 / firmware ver. 1.2 freeze problem

Many of you (like me) are having major headaches because of the new updates that Apple has been releasing (i.e. iTunes 7). So far I only know that this affects the Video iPod, but this could very well fix other models too.
Here are some symptoms of what the following will fix, and what you most likely have already done to try and fix it.
    - iPod keeps freezing after a few seconds ever since you updated to iTunes 7 and/or iPod software ver. 1.2.
    - iPod will remain in Do Not Disconnect mode even after ejecting or disconnecting
    - A forced reset does not fix it, as it repeats the above.
    - Restoring the iPod through iTunes does not help
    So, here's what to do.
The old iPod updater software is how you will fix all of this. Unfortunately, because iTunes 7 thinks that it's better and more up to date, it will prevent you from opening the old version of the software if you still have it on your machine.
So first of all, uninstall iTunes 7.0. (You do not have to remove your library information, just the software.) Restart the computer.
If you still have the old iPod updater, try it and see if it runs. If it does, read on. If not, skip to the next paragraph. So, if it does run, simply hit Restore and you can go back to a previous version of the firmware. I believe that Apple discontinued the firmware page since releasing iTunes 7. Look around some search engines like Google if you really want the latest firmware.
Take out the installation CD that came with your iPod. Run it and it should install the old iPod updater along with iTunes 6.x. iTunes 6.x cannot run since iTunes 7 changed your libary's formatting, but that will not be a problem. Run the Restore process in the old updater and it should be alright for you to start loading your stuff on again without problems.
Since iTunes 7 reformatted your libary listing, iTunes 6 will no longer work. However, you can still use it by reinstalling iTunes 7. Just make sure you do the following.
TO KEEP THE SAME THING FROM HAPPENING AGAIN
iTunes 7 is actually alright. It's the updater part of it that will screw up your iPod.
    - iTunes 7 will tell you that a new iPod software version is available when you open it.
    - Check the "Never Ask Again" box and click Don't Install.
    - When you sync your iPod to your computer, NEVER touch the Version section when you're changing your iPod's settings. Everything else is alright to work with.
    - Everything will work fine as long as you never update the iPod's software via iTunes, at least until the programmers can fix this issue in a later release or patch.
I hope this helps out a lot of you. Pretty lame of Apple to miss something this big during debugging.
    Custom Windows XP

Listen to this person, he knows exactly what he's talking about. My unit had the freezing problem, the visual artifact problem, and eventually would only show a blank white screen after I had tinkered too long. Luckily I have another computer that I hadn't yet upgraded to itunes 7 and it had the last firmware upgrade before the itunes 7 one. From disk mode I was able to restore it to the previous firmware version, and now the ipod works perfectly.
I too am almost disqusted with Apple for 1) missing this problem and 2) not letting people know!
I wonder how many more people are going to have lots of problems so apple can protect their PR.
Anyways, what would be really helpful would be if someone could upgrade the latest firmware installer before itunes 7 (it's an individual ipod updating program, not itunes 6.xx)somewhere on the internet so users could download it and do away with this evil 1.2 firmware.

  • Nokia C7 freeze problem

Hello. I use Nokia C7. All works fine but often when I surf the web browser, use skype, search updates and doing many other things my Nokia C7 freeze and dont (cant) resart. Only option to restart the phone is remove and insert battery. How to FIX this problem?

This problem has nothing to do with applications added or needing software updates. It is purely a hardware problem, there seems to be a fundamental flaw with the design of Nokia phones, and it is very disappointing that they are not more honest about the problem.
My Nokia C7 seems to freeze frequently when processing CPU intensive processes especially, such as trying to watch videos on the BBC iplayer or Youtube, but can happen anytime. The pattern seems to be with these phones (and the N8) that these freezes happen quicker and quicker as time goes on. It is just not good enough to say take the battery out, which is the ONLY way to reboot the phone, do other phone users of different manufacturers have to do this? Not in my experience.
I find it incredible that Nokia, with its dwindling share market, can release these phones without having fully tested them properly. You may have gathered that I feel rather disgruntled with Nokia, I have always had Nokia phones but I am now regretting my decision to start a new contract with this phone. I like it and the features, but what point is there in giving you applications such as the Navigation and the iplayer for example if you can't use them because of freezing.
I will be sending my C7 off for repair next week, in the hope that they have sorted out their hardware issue, but I say beware to anyone else with this phone. If you have had occasional freezing problems, then they will in all likelihood increase as the internal hardware degrades.

  • Annoying Ipod Synching Problem!!!- Laptop Crash- Now On Another Comp

I Have a Very Annoying and frustrating Problem with my Ipod Classic (80GB). Recently my laptop Crashed and i got all the music onto my main computer now. The Problem now is getting the music onto my ipod. I Synched it to the computer, Therefore It erases my music from the ipod and synchs it to new itunes. But everytime i try to get the music onto the ipod it either, connects them disconnects, Has a Unkown error Or when i've Waited for ages getting all the music on to it, It says A required file is missing and so your ipod cannot be Syched AND i end up with nothing on the ipod and lots of wasted time
    Someone Plz Help.
I reset my ipod and tried it in CD mode but it still didn't work!
    What Should I Do?

+I tried various troubleshooting steps and each time when plugging the iPod in Itunes it starts up and it takes maybe 1 minute trying to recognize it when the computer crashes and reboots automatically going to the black screen and doing a file dump.+
I'm curious about this point. Is there any flash of a blue screen at any point here? (That's a more familiar sort of thing to be seeing prior to the system doing a restart after a serious error.)

  • Fix for Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse Freeze problem.

After deleting the following file: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
And re-pairing my Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse all of my freezing problems have been resolved.

    For what it's worth...
I have read a bunch of different threads on this. So far I have:
    - downgraded my TimeCapsule (still had problems)
    - Upgraded to 10.5.7 (still had problems)
    - made both the bluetooth keyboard and might mouse "favorites" per http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1907901&tstart=30
    - disabled bluetooth in the network panel
...and left an old PC mouse connected to a USB port.
The add as favorites / disable in network panel I have done fairly recently and - so far - no problems.
    YMMV...
