Annoying disc eject problem

whenever I try to open my DVD tray using the eject button, the tray will randomly choose not to open.
I know I have to hold the button for a while, but even doing that, the drive will always start the eject procedure (I can tell for the noises) but sometimes it appears to give up in the process.
however, software eject always works just fine.
what could be wrong?

Considering you had previous issues with the keyboard; http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8059296#8059296
that could part of the problem. Try a different keyboard.

  • DISC EJECT PROBLEM?????

But when i hold the Eject button down for a second the drive Ejects. Is this a problem with my Macbook or is it just another "feature" of 10.4.9 ??

  • Mac Mini won't start and constantly makes disc ejecting noise

My Mac Mini won't start. It was working fine, then just locked up and won't start again. When I push the start button it just makes this repeated disc ejecting noise from the DVD drive. It doesn't make the chime noise or display anything on the monitor. I've disconnected the optical drive, but it didn't help. Then it just doesn't start at all. I thought that if I would disconnect the optical drive, that it would ignore it and just boot off the hard drive, but nothing happened. The power light comes on. Then, if I hold down the power button for 10 seconds it shuts down. The fan operates. It just never attempts to boot up. I can't put in a system DVD because the optical drive is just in eternal eject mode.
If you have any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

    I have the same situation.
I think the drive thinks it has a disc to eject or part of the mechanism is stuck and can't return to it's resting position. I was going to disconnect as you tried but now I think I'll try to disassemble the drive to see if there might be some debris jamming things up.
Please let me know if you solve the problem.

  • Ejecting problem on my 2nd SATA Hard Drive Bay Caddy

I am having an ejecting problem with my caddy secondary HD.
Basically every time I close the lid, the secondary HD is ejected or, in case ejecting fails, I obtain an error message..very annoying situation.
How can windows 7 avoid to eject it? Do you know a best practice to configure properly the 2nd SATA Hard Drive Bay Caddy??
    Thanks in advance!

  • Disc ejects before completion in iDVD

Hi, firstly I'm a little behind the times having only recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, my problem is iDVD. I have a collection of images that I am trying to burn via iDVD all goes well until the burning, the disc ejects about 8 minutes before completion, this has happened five times, I have reinstalled Snow Leopard, as the permissions appeared to be incorrect and did not repair in utilities, but still no joy.
The machine is 2.16Ghz intel core 2 Duo, Memory 2Gb 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and there is 80GB of memory, also it is iDVD 7 1.2 I know it's not the latest all bells and whistles machine but it worked until the recent upgrade.
    Hope someone can help
    Thanks.

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good and you can then burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed (2x - 4x) available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Cannot Install Windows, disc ejects

I have used Boot Camp to install Windows a few times before on my Leopard operating system, though I had to uninstall it a couple times (I realized I couldn't use my reinstall disc from my old PC). Every time it worked smoothly and I never had any troubles.
For some reason this time around, I am able to partition the disc just fine, but when I choose to start the installation, the computer reboots, but instead of installing windows, it ejects the disc needed and simply starts up Mac OSX. I've tried using option to select the disc (the disc ejects before I'm given my options) and telling the computer to reboot using the disc. Neither has worked. I've used this same disc before to install Windows, and it worked fine then. What can I do to make the disc not eject, so I can install windows?

I experienced this as well. What I discovered is if you push the XP install disc back into the drive while your Mac is still at the grey screen when it reboots you will find the install will continue just fine. This will happen a couple of times during the install process, just push the XP install disc back in each time and XP will install.

  • Annoying Ipod Synching Problem!!!- Laptop Crash- Now On Another Comp

I Have a Very Annoying and frustrating Problem with my Ipod Classic (80GB). Recently my laptop Crashed and i got all the music onto my main computer now. The Problem now is getting the music onto my ipod. I Synched it to the computer, Therefore It erases my music from the ipod and synchs it to new itunes. But everytime i try to get the music onto the ipod it either, connects them disconnects, Has a Unkown error Or when i've Waited for ages getting all the music on to it, It says A required file is missing and so your ipod cannot be Syched AND i end up with nothing on the ipod and lots of wasted time
    Someone Plz Help.
I reset my ipod and tried it in CD mode but it still didn't work!
    What Should I Do?
    Message was edited by: TigerMegz

+I tried various troubleshooting steps and each time when plugging the iPod in Itunes it starts up and it takes maybe 1 minute trying to recognize it when the computer crashes and reboots automatically going to the black screen and doing a file dump.+
I'm curious about this point. Is there any flash of a blue screen at any point here? (That's a more familiar sort of thing to be seeing prior to the system doing a restart after a serious error.)

  • Disc Drive Issues- Ejecting Problems

    Hi!
I was wondering if someone was able to help me with my problem:
I am currently on my second Powerbook G4... The first one I purchased in October 2005, but a DVD managed to get stuck in my drive and Apple replaced it with a new computer as they couldn't figure out how to get the disc free either. My second G4 has so far worked well, but the other day I stuck a disc into my drive and it wouldn't come out. It made the noise as if it wanted to spit it out, and then nothing happened. I panicked, waited a moment and then tried to eject it after the computer recognized it again and then luckily it came out!!
Has anyone else had this issue? Is it something that most G4 users run into, or is this something more serious?
Also- is anyone else's drive somewhat noisy? It makes a little whirring sound every two minutes or so. I used to use a friend's powerbook and I don't remember it making this much noise... I may have forgotten though.
I am currently overseas in Europe and very nervous about inserting another disc as I will not be returning to a the States for several more months and will not be able to go to an Apple Help Center.
    Cheers and thanks!

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I have the impression that a tobacco smoke free and dust free environment do much to assure the reliability of CD or DVD drives in the Aluminum PowerBook series (all sizes). A friend who is a smoker purchased a CD or DVD drive cleaning kit to solve his problem, continually running the cleaner until functioning was good and disk noise was minimal.
These cleaning kits cost about US$15.00 and have a CD sized disk to which cleaner is applied. I've personally never had much luck with them but the friend is convinced his problem with tobacco smoke and/or dust was solved with one.
    Good luck.

  • Disc ejects on startup

I've been searching for a while now, but still haven't found a solution for this.
Ever since I installed the last update of Leopard, the disc tray on my PowerMac (G5) will eject on startup, before I get to the login screen. I first thought that it was looking to the disc drive for a primary operating system like my PC sometimes did, but couldn't figure out how to change the boot drive.
It's not that bad of a problem, just a little annoying. I've got it on the ground and if I forget to close it back up, my nephew might get a hold of it and snap it off.
Does anybody know what's going on?

Hi! It's a common problem and the cause is odd but i can't remember exactly what it is. I've never read of a fix. Tom

  • My dvd slot for imac10,1 does not work. It rejects the disc. Problem after reinstall of backup from hdd.

My dvd slot for imac10,1 does not work. I had a new harddrive installed in November and the MacStore installed my backups from an external harddrive. I do not use it other than to upload programs, so I have not tried using it until tax season, but it rejects the disc. The ata file indicates no dvd firmware, but the serial-ata does indicate firmware for a dvdrw. What might I do about this to bring the dvd back, least expensive to most?

Yesterday I started having the same problem. Can read disc (play movies and music) but blank disk are ejected or idvd cannot see the blank disk. I have a almost 12 month old 27" i7 imac.

  • Hard Drive Ejection Problem

I have a 2 tb western digital external hard drive that ejects from my mac almost as soon as I put it in. I formatted through the mac disk utility with 2 partitions... one htfs for time machine and one fat for transfers between windows and mac. Now every time I plug in my hard drive it loads the time machine then immediately fails and gives me the disk was not ejected properly error right after. I cant see the drive in the disk utility but the fat partition works when I plug it into windows. It is really annoying can someone tell me whats going on ??? Please help.

You may have a problem with that USB port.

  • Disc Insertion Problem

Has anyone noticed that inserting a disc into the iMac drive can become difficult after a couple of years of use?  At first I thought there was a disc in the drive that wouldn't mount or eject, but the drive turned out to be empty.  Insertion, however, required moderate force, as if part of the internal drive mechanism was resisting.  Is this a problem in the making?  Should I have it checked out by a certified technician before anything gets worse?  I've never experienced this before.  (I sure miss that reassuring pinhole!)

Try a commercial DVD head cleaner you insert to DVD drive.

  • DVD eject problems recurring

I have problems ejecting a DVD about 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 times I play one and I wondered if this was common to all iMacs or a problem with the Core Duo or OS X?
It happens with all types, self burned and retail so I don't think it's linked to a single type of disc. If it's uncommon I guess it'll need a service.
Just woke my iMac from sleep and realised it slept with a kids DVD inserted and paused. Again couldn't eject the DVD but could both stop the DVD and close its window and start playing again - now here's the odd thing it isn't showing as mounted on the deskop.
Maybe this is an OS X problem rather than the drive?

Yes! Thx God it's up and runing again! I have read this ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=455830&tstart=0 ) post and tryed to just have pacience and wait in front of a white screen for 10 min or so and at a certain moment it just started up! Pressed the eject button and the cd came finally out!

  • MacBook Pro stopped reading discs, ejects them

I bought this MacBook Pro in December of '08 (referbished, but from the apple website) and shortly after had a problem with the drive not reading discs and making odd noises. Took it in and they replaced it under the 90 day warranty. I haven't used the disc drive in at least a year or more now, but when I tried to recently it would act like it was reading the disc with nothing showing up. After a minute it ejects the disc. I've tried at least a dozen different discs that all work fine on my other computer and my MacBook Pro spits them all out.
Obviously I no longer have this thing under warranty, being 4 years old, so is there anything I can try to do without spending $400 I don't have for ANOTHER new optical drive? All of my software is up to date.
Also, if it comes to replacing the drive again, is there any way that I might get it free since this is a recurring problem with a refurbished laptop? I know it's a longshot, but worth asking.

I'm not sure where you come up with the $400 figure unless you are including some very expensive labor.  A replacement drive should not cost more than about $100.  They can be user installed and does not require any exotic tools.  (I have done it)
Have you tried a little cleaning of the drive.  Often a DVD cleaning disk can clean a dusty lens and make it function.  Not having used it a long time does not mean that dust has not seeped in during that period.  I have also heard that judicious use of compressed air will clean the lens.
It never hurts to ask but your chances of getting a new drive for free are about as good as getting palm trees to grow in Antarctica.
    Ciao.
