Annoying freezes using gnome shell

Gnome 3 seems pretty stable. However, when viewing high resolution pictures, especially many of them in a browser, gnome shell tends to lock up. The screen becomes unresponsive but the mouse cursor can still be moved and it responds to elements on the screen (e.g. window borders). Also sound playback continues. Same happens if I scroll pdf pages fast and continuous using evince or some other pdf viewer.
I can reach the virtual console using CTRL+ALT+F1 but restarting gnome results in a new freeze at the gdm login screen or, if no login manager is used, when loading the desktop.
I have this problem for quite a while now. It pretty much exists since the first release. I seem to be not the only person with this problem [1]. I can't find anything regarding this issue in log files
Hardware:
IBM T60
ATI X1400 using the radeon open source drivers
Any suggestions? This is really annoying...

  • Gnome Shell Freezes- Need a Permanent Solution

    Greetings folks,
I changed my DE a month or two ago. I'm now using Gnome Shell, which I am more than happy with except for one minor glitch, the shell freezes, a lot. The wiki has a temporary fix for this issue:
    pkill -HUP gnome-shell
But honestly, this happens at least once or twice a week and it's getting to be really annoying. If the wiki has a temporary fix for this I'm going out on a limb and say it's a widespread problem. I scanned for errors in Journalctl but nothing really stands out. Are any of you guys using Gnome Shell experiencing this problem? I'd really love a solution if anyone else has figured something out. I scoured the internet to no avail. Any help at all would be appreciated guys.
    Thank you!

Well I'd start at the locker then. Or don't lock it at all.

  • Gnome-shell not showing app icons

I own a Sony Vaio Z laptop equipped with a common intel video card and an external Radeon HD 7000 graphics card (literally external, connected through thunderbolt/lightpeak).
The problem is that whenever I connect the external video card (which by the way works just fine using the opensource ati driver), gnome-shell fails to paint most of my app icons and other possibly related problems appear:
        (1) as I said, no icons for some of the apps (see this screenshot); if i restart gnome-shell (using Alt+F2, r) the icons show up but just for the next couple of minutes. Only the icons that are painted by gnome-shell seem to be problematic (these include the dash, the apps list and sometimes the status menu icons). No useful output messages are printed by gnome-shell if running from a terminal. No extensions are enabled at all. This also happens with the default icon set.
        (2) gnome-screenshot timeouts after ~20 seconds saying "** Message: Unable to use GNOME Shell's builtin screenshot interface, resorting to fallback X11". ltrace says that a call to g_dbus_connection_call_sync blocks the process.
        (3) scrolling in chromium using the mouse is sometimes laggy, but this may be due to issues in the radeon driver.
None of these problems appear when the external card is not connected. I know this may be an upstream bug but I'd like to see first if the Arch community has any idea about this. I am really willing to debug this issue and spend as much time as needed on it, but I don't know where to start from.

It appears that all the 10 threads of the GTask thread pool are fully occupied most of the time. Therefore all the glib async requests are blocked for a while until the active tasks somehow finish (or timeout). I have no idea though how to find out what are those 10 threads occupied with.

  • Gnome-shell and xfburn - drag-and-drop no longer supported

Can someone using gnome-shell else try this as a sanity check:  try to drag-and-drop an mp3 file into xfburn in "Audio CD" mode.  For me, mp3 files are ignored but wav files drag-and-drop in just fine.  I can add mp3 files to the compilation but only if I do so through the xfburn GUI.

I get the same behavior here.

  • Alt tabbing with full screen games in Gnome Shell

I'm using gnome shell 3.6.2 and whenever I launch a full screen game (like heroes of newerth) I can't alt-tab out of it or change to a different work space. I can do this in XFCE, KDE (with compositing disabled) and unity (have a press it a few times) but I can't do this in gnome shell. Is there a workaround I can use (besides starting it in a different X server).
EDIT: I tried the package sdl-nokeyboardgrab and the libx11-nokeyboard grab and tried running hon as:
    LD_PRELOAD=libX11-nokeynomouse.so HoN/hon.sh
but it still doesn't work. When I alt-tab/change workspace it shows the adwaita cursor (instead of the HoN one) and kinda blinks the gnome shell desktop.

Hello bferretti...sorry to hear you're having issues with the hot corners.
I was playing WOW last night and started playing around with the video options. I noticed there are two full screen options now - Fullscreen and Windowed Fullscreen. If in Fullscreen the hot corners are disabled for me. If I use Windowed Fullscreen then the hot corners are still active.
Not sure if you've taken a look at that...but just thought I'd pass along that info.
    Thanks!

  • Changing battery applet icon increments in gnome shell

I am currently using gnome shell, and I am able to customize most of it to how I like it. However, the battery icon has increments of about 25%, which is very misleading in terms of seeing how much battery you have left. I currently have a gnome-shell extension to add the percentage next to the icon, which helps, but I would like to change the increment to 1%. I understand that if I had to do it, I would have to have 101 png files for the battery icon. My question is: has somebody already done this? If so could you tell me where. If not, could someone explain to me how to change how often the icon updates (I'm pretty sure I know where the icons go, but I don't know where to tell the OS to use and update them)
    Thanks

Just to follow up on this, if I force my gnome-session to use fallback mode it seems to work.  I'm guessing this is likely due glx issues with Xorg and TigerVNC.  Eventually I plan on building the svn version in the AUR because it has the required patches.

  • Cinnamon vs gnome-shell

ive installed both cinnamon and gnome-shell, has anyone else noticed the window animations in cinnamon to be alot smoother than in gnome-shell, like the workspace switching and expose like animations
i would prefer to use gnome-shell at this point, but the animations are sometimes abit laggy
btw im using nvidia 460 with nvidia drivers

Yes I've noticed the same. I greatly prefer Cinnamon however. Why they perform differently I suspect has to do with Gnome Shell and it's handling of workspaces.
In generally Cinnamon just seems lighter and balanced the eye candy well.

  • Gnome-shell & flash video questions,

    Hi all,
Right so I installed Arch on my old laptop this afternoon, a Toshiba Satellite M40 - first of all I was hoping to use Gnome-shell but it seems my old laptop isn't capable of running it.
see there for the specs, the graphic card is an Ati X300 - so once setup if gnome-shell is installed - the gnome screen is blue (the default wallpaper) then nothing else, no error neither. Removing gnome-shell will start gnome with an error that gnome-shell crashed (would be good to know how to solve it)
Then the second questions is regarding flash-video. Running the plugin and firefox youtube's video are running fine, but if I want to watch video from motogp.com (sorry the content is not free) the video is not smooth - so for gnome-shell I can understand the hardware isn't powerful enough but for the flash video I am puzzled and would love to be able to use my old laptop - especially that those video were running fine few month ago on the same laptop running XP.
    Many thanks,

You could try forcing a fallback mode. It needs gnome-panel and metacity to work. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … lback_mode
Flash's performance has always been worse in OSes other than Windows. http://arstechnica.com/software/news/20 … yer-10.ars

  • Gnome-shell not run automatically

    hi.
when gnome 3.8 came out, I was using gnome classic (compatibility mode) and the option to switch back to gnome-shell disapeared in gnome tweak tool. So I had no option to switch to gnome-shell. I never mind continue to use metacity and gnome classic in compatibility mode.
Now in 3.10 I don't even get a mouse cursor and font rendering is awfull. So I have to use gnome-shell and not metacity.
How do I do so that gnome-shell is automatically run when I launch a gnome session ??
I have tried to add a gnome-shell.desktop in ~/.config/autostart or add gnome-shell with gnome-session-properties at start. Nothing worked.
At last, I was able to prevent metacity to run at launch by removing metacity.desktop in autostart or removing a session file lying around.
Now, I have to open a terminal and manually run gnome-shell.
    Help.
p.s.: how does gdm launch gnome-shell for you ?
Last edited by solstice (2013-10-12 12:16:04)

    It works.
What I have done is to remove ~/.config/gnome-sessions/sessions/gnome-fallback.session and replace it with gnome.session
But I got a "ooops something wrong happened" when I tried to login so I think what fixes it was running
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session gnome
from a terminal run from a console with startx and gnome-session --session=gnome in ~/.xinitrc
    I got help from http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7385192.html
a post from an arch user posting on gentoo forum. WTF !

  • Empathy notifications in gnome-shell

    Hello everybody,
I am using gnome-shell and empathy and experimented a little issue. When I am using empathy's chat box (not the gnome-shell notification area one) to speak with somebody, everytime I get an answer from this contact I am speaking with, the notification area appears saying that there is a new answer. It is a little uncomfortable as it forces me to use always the notification area chat box. Is there any way to avoid this?
    Thank you in advance

  • [Gnome-shell] Desktop freezes when Samba shares become unavailable

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a very annoying problem on the laptop I use at work. I'm using an up-to-date Arch with Gnome-shell and we have a bunch of network shares on several servers.
I access them via Nautilus and everything's fine as long as I don't unplug the cable. If I do that while Samba shares are mounted in Nautilus (through GVFS), the entire desktop freezes and I have to restart GDM to get it back (but all applications are killed and that's not cool).
I also realized that when I mount a Samba share I'm accessing through a personal VPN (so, through the Internet), the entire desktop becomes slow and choppy. If I transfer a file to the remote folder using Samba over this VPN, I cannot do anything until the transfer is finished. During this time the desktop is freezed. But after that I get it back and it's working again (but is still slow as long as I keep the share folder mounted).
When I unmount the "slow" Samba shared folder, everything works perfectly.
Why is Gnome so dependent on such thing as a simple mounted shared folder? Is there a way to prevent this behaviour?
    Thanks in advance

Hi nanawel, i've a very similar problem to your on my home machine: this (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1196319) is the thread i found when researching my problem, so i started investigating it and then discovered the samba shares problem, so i found out your problem when looking up for similar annoyances in Google.
Have you been able to track it down?
As i said in the other thread, i don't have installed any of those gnome-shell extensions, but i have the TweakTool->Desktop option named "Show mounted volumes on the desktop" enabled, as well as an entry in my /etc/fstab file: tomorrow i'm going to have some tries with my brother's pc and see if i can find out something more.. i'll keep posting on this thread then, since it looks like my problem is very very similar.. hopefully we'll be able to track it down this beast.
But also, I'm also experiencing that "slow network share/choppy desktop" on my work machine only: it looked like a FUSE issue, but could never debug that since i've a quite important deadline at work and can't start debugging my OS during working hours
Anatolik was kind enough to chime in and suggest to debug it (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1193437), this is the thread about it.

  • Gnome-shell Crash Using Type To Search In Dash

When I change Gnome-shell theme from the default Adwaita, I can't use Type To Search in the Dashboard. As soon as I type that first letter, it freezes and nothing works, keyboard, mouse. I had to do a hardware reset to log back in. In the dash, I can click on Application, Windows and it works. I just can't use the Search.
    Any ideas?

  • Gnome-shell uses 100% of cpu!

    Hello,
after some time, gnome-shell starts to use all of my cpu (well, one core out of 2). The navigation becomes sluggish, applications need several seconds to refresh.
How can I determine what is causing this? It is really annoying, as I have to close all my work when this occurs.

Try `strace`ing the running process. Any fd's can be looked up in /proc/$PID/fd

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell doesn't search through recently used items

A while back I ran chattir +i on ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel because of a bug that gnome shell had where it would crash while searching for recently used items. Since I've now updated to 3.4.1, I figured the bug might have been fixed, so I ran chattr -i to allow writing to the file again. The file has since filled up with my recently used items, but they don't seem to appear in the gnome shell search.
Sorry if this is a bit brief, but I'm not sure what other information to give on this problem.

I believe this was removed with 3.4.

  • Gnome-shell uses telepathy kde instead of empathy

i've installed both gnome3 and kde4 on my archlinux, but i found that in gnome , when i open chat pop-up at the bottom of the screen, the chat window will be a telepathy-kde window instead of empathy. how can i change it?

I had the same issue. Since right now I am using GNOME 3 + Gnome Shell, the only way I found around this is to remove kde-telepathy. Otherwise both empathy and kde-telepathy both kept running, and only empathy has the gnome-shell true integration.
If you don't plan on running Gnome Shell as your main for a while though, this may not be a solution for you.
