Annoying hollow loud home button clicking

My home button makes a hollow, loud clicking noise reminiscent of metal hitting glass which is what I think it actually happening.  I checked the apple forum and I am not the only one with this issue.  I brought it into my local Apple store for Genius Bar appointment and was told that it was “normal” and that either way I had apple care so if a problem arose I would be covered.  While this was intended to provide some level of comfort, it actually irritated me as I just paid $400 for the 64 GB model and was not interested in paying an additional deductible to fix a problem on the phone.  Clearly the Genius Bar solution was going nowhere so I am left with a dissatisfied feeling and wonder if I would have been better off getting an iPhone 5 for $200 less.  As it stands my family owns several apple products and I was anxiously awaiting the release of the new iPad mini.  As it may have the “new” home button I am actually second guessing that purchase and may at look at competitor product or at the very least a current gen iPad without the new home button on it.
Anyone else having similar issue with a new 5s?

I've got this problem on my iPhone 5s Space Gray. The home button seems to be making a loud clicking noise on the way up. Compared it with two other 5s phones: one other Space Gray - the clicking noise is not as loud and more uniform on the way down and up - and another Silver - also has a fairly loud clicking noise, but on the way down, not up. Accordingly, it appears that all 5s phones are different, not uniform. The loud clicking noise on the way up is annoying the living **** out of me. It's a Sprint phone; I also visited a Sprint store, and the staff memeber there was not able to tell the difference between my 5s Space Gray and another 5s he had on display. As a result, I have a tendency to think this is more likely a flaw/oversight in the phone design, not a "normal" feature of 5s like some have commented earlier on this forum.
Has anyone had a positive experience bringing their 5s to an Apple store and exchanging it to get rid of the issue for good? Or do they all click? I'm starting to really consider a visit to the Apple store.

  • Home Button "clicking"

I have an Iphone 5 and the home button keeps "clicking".  It doesn't get stuck, but it sounds like something sticky got in there and when you press the button, it clicks (and I haven't spilled anything in it or used it while eating anything sticky)?!?!?!  Anyone else having/had this problem?  If so, what did you do to fix it?
    Thanks!

Take it to an apple store, if you do not have one in your area, call 1.800.MY.APPLE and have them set up a repair of the phone, as long as your still under warranty you will not be charged

  • Home Button - Loud Click.

Please try your home button and see if it clicks too loudly? Compared to my iphone 3gs, it is very loud and hard to press in. Coworkers can hear it.
    Ugh.
This is one of those things that could be different on each phone.

It appears they are using the same switch as on the iPad. I don't find it offensive in either case. If you are not happy return the phone. You don't want to keep your wife awake at night as someone suggested on the iPad forums. Frankly, I f rt, in bed louder than my iPad and iPhone home button click, but if it keeps you awake at night, you better return it.,

  • IPhone 5 Home Button

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone else has been having issues with a stiff, clicking (quite loudly) home button that malfunctions randomly?
I am a huge Apple fan - I have had one of nearly every phone over the years, so it has really surprised me that the home button on my new iPhone 5 just does not feel right.
I have taken it into a genius 3 times now - explaining that the button feels like it has something trapped underneath it, stops responding etc etc however they insist they need proof of it occurring.
Has anyone else had these issues? The steps I have taken so far are:
Taken it back to the store the first time - they cleaned it out with air in case something was caught
Second time I took it back - they replaced the home button
Third time - I was told they need to prove it is malfunctioning and testing it in store appears it is working fine.
Its a difficult situation - I get really annoyed when I am trying to use the phone and it feels uncomfortable to use and randomly does not respond to the home button being pressed unless I lock and unlock the phone again.
Any tips, suggestions etc on how I can get this fixed?
(I have passed the phone to other iPhone 5 users when it has been playing up and they all agree it feels really odd / not normal - so I am not imagining it )
    Cheers

Try recalibrating it. Open your stock Clock app. Hold your Sleep/Wake button down until you see the slider bar to turn it off. Don;t slide the bar. Instead, let go of the Sleep/Wake button and hold the Home button down until the Clock app quits and you see your Home screen.

  • IOS 8 versus the Home Button

Starting day one using IOS8, I have had issues with the home button.  Whenever I click "once" it pops up the app switcher.  It is random, and frequent and annoying.  After reboot it is "ok", but after use of the phone over a few hours, the apps begin to not close when the home button is clicked.  The problem is progressive in nature and the phone becomes difficult to operate when the only option is to switch apps or scrolls left to the home screen and select an app.
    Phone Info:
    IPhone 5, purchased 2012
Upgraded to IOS 8 on go live day (dont yell at me....)
Have taken all updates and currently on version 8.0.2.
Have taken care of the phone very well, without any functional issues since purchase.
What I have done to "fix" the problem:
    1. Soft-shutdown-reboot normally
Result:  Fixes the problem for a few app openings.  After use for a few hours, the problem occurs again.
    2. Hard-shutdown-reboot
Result: Longer period of time before the issue returns.  After apps are used throughout the day, will eventually become more frequent.
    3. "Reset Trick" = (Open native ios app and hold home button until app crashes)
Result: Small fix time.  Returns within an hour of use.
    4. Set accessibility>home button click speed to slow or slowest
         Result:  No change
    Other symptoms:
    1. Apps are sluggish to open.  Clicking home button does not bring up the lock screen quickly.  Slow to load once issue has begun.
    2. Banners are slow to go away or stick until acted upon.
    3. IOS apps (native and otherwise) are slow to open in comparison to IOS7.
    Possible causes:
    1. Memory Leak of one or more apps
    2. App switching not allowing for graceful memory allocation of apps
    3. Sensitivity of button press set too high.
    4. Other??
    Any other ideas are welcome.
    TIA
    Jennifer

  • OS 4.0: HOME button acting weird and inconsistently since updating

The new double click for multitasking is not working properly for me - sometimes I get the new multitasking bar; but most of the time I don't. Sometimes I'll get it with just one click, other times after clicking THREE times?!! Its so annoying. I'm on a 3G 32gb Touch and I updated with no problems at all; but everytime I double click the Home button I just get the search feature coming up instead - prior to updating I had the Home button set to get me there via a double click, but I've attempted to change that setting and I've noticed that the option to customise the Home button click function has been removed?!! Basically, multitasking is a lottery as far as my Home button is concerned, I have to keep trying different Home click combos to get it to appear and I'm regretting updating at all.
    Please help!

Well that was a waste of time.

  • Did I break my home button or what?

last 2 months, I think, I was just continuously taking screenshots (maybe 4 screenshots per second) then after 3 seconds the home button just "locked"? I don't know how to describe it but let's just say that the home button clicks normal, then when I broke it it felt like it won't go down unless you put 20KGs of pressure, but now it's almost impossible to even just click it. Did it lock? or it might have just been misplaced? because I don't think it was misplaced because I don't see gaps on the sides of the home button

  • Home Button and Syncing

today i turned on my iphone and the home button wouldnt work, i tried putting it in sync and now it wont recognize on itunes, i think maybe my home button is stuck or broken, is it a hardware problem or is it the button itself?

    Hi,
Does the home button "click" when you press it? It it does it is highly unlikely that the button is at fault, although there are 2 small "gold fingers" on the under side of the button, if one or both of these is/are broken that will be your problem and that would be a hardware problem.
    Risky.

  • IPhone 5 loud clicking home button (driving me crazy!)

I got my iPhone 12/25/12, so its only about 7 months old. Its always been well protected (first 6 months was in an otterbox, and now i use a lifeproof case) and its never gotten wet or dirty. Anyway now suddenly the home button is making a horrible clicking noise every time i press it and it also seems to have a little resistance (like its harder to press down). At first I thought it could maybe be the case, but that's definitely not it because i took it out and it still makes the clicking noise. Its driving me crazy! I played with it for a few minutes while it was out of the case and held it pressed down for a while and it stopped making the clicking noise (that lasted like 5 minutes). Could it be dirty? I cant imagine how it got dirty, but is there somehow I can fix this? Somehow I can maybe clean it without damaging the phone? Please help its really annoying.

Your phone is still under warranty.  Bring it to Apple for evaluation.  If there's a hardware issue not related to user damage, your phone will be replaced.

That's certainly odd, Sheryl84! I'm also a proud owner of iPhone 5. There is clicking noise when pressing down on the home button. That's pretty normal.
I do know from personal experience. The home button does attract food particles as its the best/ easiest way to navigate the phone at times.
There isn't a way to clean the home button but I do suggest a hands on with the device to better determine the clicking noise from the device.
There is also an accessibility option that you change so that you don't have to press the home button. Settings> General > Accessibility> Assistive Touch > On

  • Loud click from home button

I recently purchased an iPhone 4 and a 3GS from AT&T. While I like the iphone 4, I have noticed that the home button on that has more travel and a noticably louder click than 3GS. Since I have never owned an iPhone before, I was hoping if the gurus on this forum can help me understand if this is a normal behavior for the iphone 4. I am especially worried if this will get worse going forward.
I would wait to hear on this forum before I take my phone to the apple store for evaluation of this issue.

Per the redesign the home button, volume buttons, and power button were designed to have a more click sense sound. It's designed like that on purpose to give it more feel to the customers.
A few don't enjoy it, but others like it or don't mind it.
Nothing to be afraid of. Just to get used to and enjoy.

  • My ipod home button requires a lot of pressure and clicks very loud

  • How do I delete the download button which is next to my home button? I keep clicking it when I want home and it is annoying.

How do I delete the download button which is next to my home button?

You can use the Customize feature to move it to a less irritating location. I suggest the Add-on bar if you keep that displayed.
Start customizing with either of these, then drag the arrow to a new location, or into the dialog to remove from all bars:
    * right-click a blank area of the tab bar > Customize
    * tap the Alt key > View menu > Toolbars > Customize
You will notice that some of the combined controls split apart in the customize view. If you put anything between them, they won't be able to recombine. (For example, if you separate stop and reload, or put something between back/forward and the URL box.)

  • IPod Touch Home Button Loud Click

We have just bought the latest iPod Touch 3rd Gen and an iPhone 3GS.
The iPhone has a very quiet, soft to press, home button.
However, the iPod has a much louder, hard to press, home button which is very distracting and disappointing for a £229 device.
Does anybody else have this issue with iPod Touch?
