Annoying intermittent buzz

I've a week old iphone connected to a aluminum imac with a set of external powered speakers.
The last two days I've been getting a very annoying buzz about 2-4 seconds long. It happens on a somewhat random basis usually every couple of minutes.
It didn't have this issue the first few days. As far as I know everything is the same as when I first hooked it up other than perhaps a volume setting.
I know I can move it into another room, but I was hoping I could keep it connected to my computer.

You are hearing "GSM buzz", an artifact of the TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) protocol used by GSM cell phones. It is the result of improperly shielded cables to your speakers. GSM powers the transmitted signal on and off many times per second so several phones can share the same channel and tower. Each time it is switched on or off it creates an electromagnetic pulse that is being picked up by any cables near the phone (it's similar to the "pop" you sometimes hear on am AM radio when turning on a light). Properly made audio cables have a ferrite "bead" around the cable that absorbs these pulses. So the solution is to get ferrite beads for your existing cables (Radio Shack used to have them), get new cables, or move the cables away from the phone.
This happens with all GSM phones, BTW, not just the iPhone.

  • Macbook Pro Hard disk Makes an annoying sound (buzz) while working but functions properly.

I've got this Macbook Pro 13 inch 2.4 Intel core i5 processor. After about a year the hard disk without any reason started to make an annoying sound (buzzing) while working that sometimes quiets down but when I move the laptop it starts all over again !! Also when I put it down on a side like on my bed while I'm lying on the bed it makes the same sound !! Like when I move the laptop I can hear the buzzing sound changing !! The hard disk functions pretty well though!! What's the problem? I tried Verifying and Reparing the Disk as my father suggested and that helped a bit but after like 10 minutes it's starts again. Any ideas? Have you guys ever seen such a thing before? What should I do?

I have the same issue you're having.
When it first happened (soon after I bought my late 2013 15" MBP), eventually my motherboard and Retina display crashed and needed to be replaced. Now after a couple of months being repaired, I started getting the same clicking sounds opening web browsers or apps, etc. I'm worried its the same thing with the motherboard and or retina display starting to fail again.
Im going to have it checked out however like you said, It's hard to replicate on the spot.
Please LMK if you have any updates on the cause and I'll do the same.
    Thanks!

  • Intermittent Buzzing with HP Pavilion dv7

Just a couple of months ago I got a new HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with beats audio.  For a while it worked fine, but recently I'm having a problem with the sound.  Whenever I watch videos, listen to music, play games, anything with sound, I get an intermittent buzz that lasts maybe half a second.  The video seems to slow down just for that split second as well.
I don't know if this is relevant, but the sound of the buzz seems to be a little different depending on the sound actually playing.  For example if the music if soft and low-pitched (the music itself, not the speaker settings), then the buzz is also.  If the music is loud and high-pitched, then so is the buzz.  It's as if that split second of audio is repeating like a skipping record.
Usually it happens maybe 1-3 times per hour.  It happens more often (like once every few minutes) if I am charging a device like an iPhone from a USB port.  However, it doesn't seem to happen when running on battery power, only when using the AC Adapter.  I tried a different AC adapter, but it doesn't really help.

Would you please elaborate on the process of "removing HP drivers"? Which drivers? Then do you lose functionality?
I also have had the described problem, intermittent quiet buzzing that goes away when the power cord is unplugged, for a while now, and I have tried everything everyone has posted, except having the motherboard re-soldered, with no success in solving the audio problem. BTW, this would not matter if I weren't a professional musician using the computer for music. But I am willing to trade in my DV7 for another HP computer that doesn't have the problem. Does HP take trade-ins?
Has anyone here had their motherboard re-soldered? Did it work?
Is there any real hope of fixing the problem? I haven't seen one.

  • I hear an intermittent buzz on my iMac

I've had this computer for about a year (amybe a little more than a year), and about two weeks ago started hearing a strange, intermittent buzz. I haven't detected a pattern yet, but I'd say it happens maybe every half hour or so. It almost sounds like a surge - it is a short, 1 second buzz. Thoughts?

Use Apple Hardware Test. It will exercise all of your iMac's moving parts except for its optical drive, if it has one. Report if AHT concludes its tests with anything other than "no trouble found".
Determine if you can correlate the noise to one of the tests it performs.

  • Why am I getting an intermittent buzz with preamp and studio monitors?

I've just gotten rid of my desktop computer speakers which plug into the mini-headphone audio out on my Macbook Pro (i7, 2.66, mid 2010). Instead, I've connected via firewire 800 to an older 8 ch Presonus Firestudio Project preamp, and have connected a new pair Fostex powered studio monitors to that for my audio (and scratch recording). When I first start playing music in iTunes it all sounds great. But after a while, I'l start to get these periodic loud electronic buzzes. It's not just in the background, it actually will cut off the song to make the loud sound for a brief second. Over time it will become more frequent, and at one point it got to the point that it was just a constant buzz, no audio at all. Unplugging firewire stops it. Since there are a number of components, I'm not sure what is causing the problem. Can anyone help?

The update didn't apply correctly, which will be typically due to an interuption within your setup. You will have to connect to iTunes via micro usb to restore.

  • W510 annoying humming / buzzing / whining sound fixed!

In another post, someone diagnosed the issue for this annoying whining noise that comes from the rear left of the machine as the backlight component of the screen and suggested a connection to the NVidia driver for the NVidia Quadro FX 880M that is an option on the W510.
After going to the Nvidia site and downloading their latest WQHL driver for Win 7 x64, the noise is gone. Lenovo does not have this driver on their website. The download also contains a driver update for the Nvidia audio which I also installed. Although this is not definitive, the sound is gone. Good luck.

This is facinating information Peter, thanks for this.
Interestingly, the noise has appeared on my system again, (after not being there since my 3rd and most recent system board replacement)...  And now that you mention it, I was running the NVidia drivers for a few weeks because of the fact StarCraft2 was crashing the PC repeatedly...  I installed the OLD drivers (aka, official Lenovo drivers) and the noise is back with a vengance....  I hadn't made the correlation until you mention it.
It's really too bad Lenovo maintains a full year gap from NVidia's latest drivers.

  • Intermittent Buzzing Noise

I'm getting a loud, buzzing noise from my G4 DP500 Powermac. The noise sounds like a bad fan bearing and is accompanied by moderate vibration which feels like it's coming from the area of the power supply at the top of the machine. This only occurs when I am using Pro Tools, working on a large session with a lot of plugins enabled, and only after the machine has been in use for a long period. The noise and vibration start very suddenly, and disappear when I restart the machine. Is there a fan somewhere near the top of the machine that would only activate after a long period of intensive use?

It really feels like the vibration
and buzz are coming for the power supply unit. Is
that a replaceable or serviceable part?
I've never run across a power supply that coudn't be replaced Prices will vary depending on what machine you have.
    Another thought...
Apple went though a time where they used no screws during assembly - everything was snap-together.
If your machine uses screws, might also want to check and make sure they are all tight.
If, when you touch the power supply itself, the noise stops, mght want to try using some sort of wedge/filler where the power supply contacts the case proper. (I used a folded piece of paper to stop one vibration related noise)

apple told me it's probably interference from something like a phone or etc... but i've moved everything away, and nothing helps. unless someone is aiming a microwave at my room, i think there's something screwed up with my mac. it's not the router (airport express base station, latest firmware) - we have 3 other macs that use it with no problem at all.

  • Mysterious crackling/buzzing

OK, so I have been playing my guitar through GrarageBand for quite a while now, and it's absolutely amazing. Except recently, I've discovered this annoying little intermittent buzzing that seems ot be completely random. I should probably explain my setup: I have my guitar plugged into a POD XT live which connects to the computer via USB. It's been working great for a few months like this, and I use the POD XT effects through a track with no effects to record. I have checked multiplae times to see if the connection is OK, and it seems to be. I don't think I'm overloading the input or speakers, because if i plug my speakers directly into my POD it sounds great. I think the problem is GarageBand because I only have this problem when I'm playing through GarageBand. The noise sounds like it's being overloaded, like a loud and pretty frequent buzz, completely different and much louder than normal buzzing. I have low impedence active pickups and they are supposed to be really low on noise, and I have a cord that quiets the hum also. The buzzing also seems to take the last couple of notes I've played and repeat them over, sometimes resulting in a sudden huge delay between my playing and the sound, and even the notes I play sounding a half step down... It's odd, but it seems to happen at just the right times, like when I just get to the cool part in the solo I'm imrovising. It's almost impossible to play for 15 seconds without a huge distorted buzz, which goes away until the next time I start playing something really cool. So hopefully I've explained this enough for you guys to understand my annoying situation, and thanks in advance...

Oh, no I know it's definitly not that... I've been playing guitar for about two and a half years, and I know about distortion, fuzz, echo/delay, phaser, flanger, reverb, chorus, and I have a POD XT Live, which is a multi-effect pedal board that I use for my distortion tone (it's actually amazing how high quality the effects are on it) and all of the crazy effects like reverse delay or synth effects, and I run it through a channel with no effects on GarageBand. I can understand what you're saying, and it would be kind of...well...sad... if that was the problem, but thanks for pointing it out anyway. The problem I'm having is a KIND of distortion, but it's not the desired distortion effect that I'm using through my POD. It lasts for about a second or two, and is more of a buzz that overloads what I'm playing, that usually goes away for a while, but then comes back at the worst times. Haha yeah, It's definitely not an effect I'm using, that would be pretty funny. I'm not riping on what you said, I can understand how someone who had never used an overdrive on their guitar would react if they heard it. The overdrive on GarageBand is extremely scratchy and distorted witout any tweaking, so I'm sorry if I wasn't really clear before, and thanks for covering that, I guess I should've clarified that I wasn't talking about an overdrive or distortion. Also, I should probably add that the buzz/hum/scratching that overloads my guitar signal happens even when I;m playing clean, so it might not be the fact that I'm running a distortion effect through GarageBand.

  • My iMac speakers buzz now

For some reason it seems the radio on the iPhone causes my iMac speakers to emit an intermittent buzz. It's incredibly annoying. The cable that came with the dock isn't long enough to allow for docking without buzzing. I have to put the iPhone on the other side of my desk out of reach in order to keep this from happening. Is this another AT&T GSM "feature"?
BTW, this happens on my iMac C2D at home, and my iMac CD at work. The iPhone does not have to be docked either, just within a few feet of the computer.

The interesting thing is....i have my cradle parked next to my G4 tower, and next to my 23" Cinema HD Apple Screen. I have two Apple speakers (the round bose speakers) just behind the iPhone. They don't interfere at all.
    Must be in the design/shielding.
Otherwise, the iPhone will interfere with other speakers, television speakers, etc etc..

  • Intermittent Wifi DNS Problem

    Blackberry Curve 8900, Software v 5.0.0.411 (Platform 5.2.0.31)
I seem to have a really annoying intermittent problem with my phone.  Sometimes, it works on my home network perfectly, and other times the Wifi symbol goes grey and I can't browse the internet on it using Hotspot Browser.  All other devices on the network will all be working fine whilst this is going on.
The home screen shows that I am connected to wifi - the SSID is shown - but wifi diagnostics shows that it is not connecting to either the Blackberry infrastructure, or the Enterprise.
The phone is getting the correct DNS server addresses from the router, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle any DNS requests.  I can ping and telnet rcp.eu.blackberry.com perfectly from my laptop, but the phone won't resolve an address for it.
Usually (but not always) a battery pull will sort it out for a while, and sometimes a router reboot will do it.  Switching the wifi off and on again never works.
Having said it seems like a DNS issue, I can't actually ping the router's IP address from the phone so perhaps it's not a DNS issue at all and it's not actually connected to the my router, despite appearing to be so.
I've checked the router logs and there are no obvious error messages in there which would explain this.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to things I can try?  I don't think it's reasonable to have to reboot either my phone or the router 4 or 5 times a day and it gets extremely irritating as I have to keep my phone near me for work, and me happens to be near my computer speakers so when it falls off the wifi, I'm constantly getting that irritating speaker interference!
    Many thanks,
    Emily.

I have a feeling this might be related - if I switch Data Services off in Mobile Network, I get exactly the same symptoms.  If I look at the DNS lookup tool from within 'Mobile Network' rather than the WiFi screen, it tells me that it doesn't have any DNS server addresses.
It looks as though my issues might be to do with losing data coverage (I tend to sit in an area which doesn't have great signal).  Surely the Curve 8900 should be able to maintain internet connectivity via Wifi even if there is no mobile data coverage?  I've seen that this should be possible as a solution when using the phone abroad - switch data off to avoid the higher charges, but still be able to use hotel wifi, etc.  Other users have reported being able to do this, but from what I can tell, my phone isn't able to work like this at the moment.
Any suggestions?  Or can anyone else at least confirm that they are able to use Wifi to get on the internet even with mobile Data Services switched off?
    Thanks,
    Emily.
[Edit] P.S. This would also explain why I couldn't get internet on my phone at all this morning despite rebooting both it and the router, as Vodafone were reporting voice, sms and internet network outages in the UK today

  • Macbook Pro case buzzing

There is an intermittent buzzing on the right side of my macbook pro keyboard (near the right speaker grill). As far as I can tell it is independant of the display, cpu usage or temperature. I think it's a problem with the case because it goes away if I apply slight pressure to the spot where the noise comes from. Any ideas, suggestions? Is anyone else experiencing this. I'm wondering if it's worth taking it in for repairs. The buzzing is really irritating.

I had this same problem with the first one I bought. I returned it for another machine. Of course the Apple genius siad he could hear no buzzing, but I siad either replace or I return. It was within the 14 day return period. If your out of that period, cal Apple Care to have it fixed.

  • Screen buzz

I have the annoying screen buzz. Screen off it is fine - 100% it is fine. Anywhere in between it is really a loud buzz. (the photobooth trick doesn't work).
I bought it when it first came out (ordered the day of the announcement), and now it is out of warranty.
    Is apple fixing this?
    thanks
    MacBook Pro 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1 GB RAM, 100GB HD @ 7200 RPM

Yeah, but I had a Wallstreet powerbook g3 that I bought from a friend at work - he had owned it for a while, and I know it wasn't "under warranty".
Not long after I bought it I started getting vertical lines on the screen. I called up Apple, and they said that it was a known problem with that machine, and they fixed it free of charge, and sent me a box for shipping, and paid for shipping.
Is the screen buzz a similar deal? Has anyone had it fixed? I have searched, and read a lot of posts about the problem, but no real solutions.
