Annoying X11 scroll wheel scrolling...

When I try to scroll in an X11 application (xterm, nedit, etc.), the scroll wheel does not behave properly. If I scroll slowly, the scrollbars never move, but once I increase the speed of the scroll wheel, it starts working. This is incredibly frustrating when I'm trying to scroll slowly through a large text file, one line at a time because the only way the scroll wheel works is if I skip 5-10 lines at a time.
I thought this had been fixed around 10.4.3 (since I had run into it as soon as I upgraded to Tiger), but I upgraded from a Powerbook G4 to a MacBook Pro and am seeing it again. I wonder if this fix didn't make it to the intel/Universal version of X11.

ARG!  This is embarassing, Apple!
I have my scroll speed turned way up and it takes 36 - get this, 36! - uses of the scroll wheel to get through one single page of artists!
On the other hand, the thumb control on the right is so sensitive that the slightest drag on it goes up by a page and a half.
You really wonder if they ever use their own products?

  • How to stop annoying auto scrolling in window

I'm running 10.8.5.  Since upgrading to 10.8.5 from 10.6.x, my system has been doing two VERY annoying things.
    1. Within a window, if I have a file selected (highlighted), say at the bottom of the window.  Then I scroll all the way to the top (not selecting any other file), and the selected file is off screen (can't see it).  I would then copy a file from another window to the first window (the file being copied starts with "A" so it should show up where I scrolled to at the top in the first window), once it's finished copying over, the window will automatically scroll down to the file I had selected earlier.  Without fail.  This actually happens with any other activity being done on my system.  Window ALWAYS scroll to the highlighted file where ever you are in the window.  This has never happened with 10.6.x or earlier OS X.
    2. This one seems to happen randomly.  Whenever I select a file to change it's name (doing a single click on the name bar), instead of the file I hit being editable, 10.8.5 would select a random file down the list instead.  Making THAT file editable.
Anyone else experience these?  Is there a fix, or an option somewhere to turn these ridiculous features off?
I really don't know what Apple is doing these days.  But it certainly is no longer the user friendly and reliable system I've used for over 20 years.  It's all about glitz and glam, no real functionality for old school power users.  Instead of being a unique system like it used to be, it's now just a glorified version of PC.  Just costs a lot more.

  • Annoying scrolling display whilst watching recordi...

I have searched everywhere but can't find an answer - surely there is a way (other than gaffer taping over the display!) to stop the incredibly annoying constant scrolling display on the front of the Humax box that continually tells you what you are watching and the duration!! This is driving me nuts! I can't watch what I have recorded without my attention being repeatably drawn to this scrolling display - what complete numpty thought this was a good idea!? Anyone have a full proper manual and or found a way to switch off the display?

I can't think of a single product I have owned that has a display that continuously scrolls - once maybe, so you can see what won't fit on the display but continuously!? Now where do Humax think this box will reside, obviously just under your telly, so do you want a continuously scrolling display right in front of your eyes whilst you are watching telly? Idiots! OR maybe if you have the Humax software and not the YouView software you can dim it or turn it off? I notice I can't get at the Humax menu at all, is it still there? I can't find settings I had on my old Humax box like editing recordings to trim adverts, choosing the over run duration and many others - maybe that's the problem, the YouView software?

  • I can not scroll on my dell studio touchpad and I am running Windows 7 and Firefox 8.0.1.

I just noticed that I can no longer use my touchpad to scroll on webpages in Firefox 8.0.1. I don't think I had this problem a few days ago, definitely not last week. I see the scroll icon but it does not scroll when I am on any webpage. At times it starts on one page until i refresh the page or click a link on the page but then it will stop scrolling.
I am able to scroll using my touchpad in Word 2010 and on the rest of my computer.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and have a Dell Studio 1558 that is a year old.
I updated the touchpad driver from and it still did not work. Then tried the one directly from Synaptics and still not working.
I also updated Firefox 8 to 8.0.1 and it still does not work.
Please fix this as it is rather annoying.

My scroll also doesn't work in Firefox -- but does in Excel and Word. This has been intermittent for months now. Usually, if I reboot the scroll would begin working again until for no apparent reason it quits again. Now even the reboot doesn't fix the no-scroll problem. I have Windows Vista. I even did a Firefox Update to 9.0.1.
I don't have that file on my about:config page so this solution won't work for me.
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Is it possible to disable the magic mouse scrolling in windows 7?

I've partitioned my hard drive with bootcamp to run windows 7 for a handful of games that aren't mac friendly. The problem is that once I installed the drivers to use the magic mouse, the scroll keeps jumping around at inconvenient times while I'm playing which makes it pretty difficult. How can I turn the scrolling off? I like having the scroll on the trackpad, but I only want the left and right click on the mouse.

I use MagicMouse on iMac with Windows 7 running (installed through BootCamp). Got sick of annoying horizontal scrolling. The solution described above has helped me to disable it. Here is what I've done in steps:
    1) go to http://www.autohotkey.com/ and download an app (a script editor).
    2) Install and run the program - please note that it will not open as it runs in the background
    3) Rightclick on the desktop -> choose "New" -> "AutoHotkey Script" (a new script file will be created on the desktop) -> name it as you wish (e.g. "Mouse_HScroll")
    4) Rightclick on the file you've just created and choose "Edit Script" from the menu.
    5) Add these three lines below existing text in the file:
    WheelLeft::return
    WheelRight::return
    #MaxHotkeysPerInterval 5000
    6) Save file
    7) Run "Convert .ahk to .exe" program from the package installed earlier and browse the file you've just created, hit ">Convert<" -> .exe file should be created. Run this file -> the scrolling should be disabled now.
    7) You may wish to move this file to Start/"Autorun" folder, so it would be launched automatically each time you reboot your Mac/PC.
    Hope this helps! Good Luck

  • Scrolling with Magic Mouse in Firefox

Occasionally, maybe once per day, when I open the Bookmarks menu in Firefox, my Magic Mouse won't scroll up or down. I close the menu, open it again, and the Magic Mouse works fine. The Firefox Bookmarks menu is the only place I've noticed this or any kind of quirky behavior with the Magic Mouse. Anyone know what could be causing this?

  • Disabling Horizontal Scroll in Mountain Lion (Magic Mouse)?

So I've tried pretty much everything and can't seem to this.
The following things used to work under Lion and before, it seems but having tried all of them, I'm at a loss for what to do. I like the magic mouse, but
when doing any development like coding or doing something in illustrator or Photoshop. The horizontal scroll makes my content jump all over the place.
Very frustrated hope someone can help. Here are all the things I've tried.
    Open a terminal shell:
defaults write com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse MouseHorizontalScroll -bool NO
    This no longer does anything.
I tried installing MagicPrefs to try and 'overwrite' the scroll functionality for horizontal movement... it doesn't work
I tried installing BetterTouchTool (BTT) to also overwrite the scroll functionality for horizontal movement... again it doesn't work.
    What does work:
It seems I can go into System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad > Mouse Options >  uncheck scrolling.
But this gets rid of all scrolling even vertical.
Now if MagicPrefs or BTT had a vertical scroll action you could bind to up/down swipes this would be fine, but they don't.
So, at a loss for what to do.

If you have windows 7 this might work for you. Found from another forum post here.

  • Slow Scrolling HD Video Selections on ATV Hard Drive

I currently stream HD videos from my Mac because for some odd reason keeping content synced produces an annoying slow scrolling issue for video selection. The ATV stops for 10-15 seconds reading the properties of each file before going to the next selection. This is not an issue when streaming which is odd as you would expect better performance with local content. This doesn't occur when scrolling standard def content or with HD podcasts though they are only 3-5 minutes in length. This was tested on 2x ATVs one with firmware 1.1 and 2. I would prefer to keep the video on the ATV. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Had the same problem. It has to do with the aTV generating a thumbnail each time for each of your videos (when steaming, your computer generates the thumbnail...no work for aTV). For some reason, some videos take longer to produce a thumbnail (perhaps one with higher bitrates). You can tell which ones they are by clicking on the list in iTunes and seeing how long it takes for the thumbnail to appear in the bottom corner.
The fix is easy: Select your own picture and store it on the artwork tab of the get info menu (this comes up if you right click the video in windows). You can copy the thumbnail the itunes creates, and paste in the artwork tab. With the artwork stored, the atv no longer has to generate it for that video.
I did this for all of my videos, and now no problems.
    Hope that helps.

  • IPOD 80 gb is responding very slow

First time poster. I did a search and found nothing. My problem is my ipod classic responds very slowly these days. I'm guessing it's because I have about 70 gb of music on it, and it's just "full". But this is getting very annoying. The wheel is not as responsive and it takes several "brushes" with my fingers to make anything happen.
This is extremely frustrating when I have the earbuds in and I'm trying to raise the volume - I'll scroll the wheel, and scroll and scroll and nothing. After several scrolls it will FINALLY WORK AND GO TO MAXIMUM VOLUME AND BLAST MY EARDRUMS!.
Does anyone know potential causes and/or fixes?
    Thank you,
    Clem

I would try a restore. Despite having that much content it should still operate normally.

  • ANYONE HERE UPGRADE THERE IPOD NANO (3rd) TO THE LATEST SOFTWARE RECENTLY?

I have just updated my nano and i noticed that the new software allows the clicking sound of the wheel to continue while i play the music and search for other songs. It's kind of annoying having the wheel still click while playing the song. Anyone else notice this and if so how do i turn it off?

Turning off the Click Wheel Sound
When you scroll through menu items, you can hear a clicking sound through the
iPod nano internal speaker. If you like, you can turn the Click Wheel sound off.
To turn off the Click Wheel sound:
Choose Settings and set Clicker to Off.
To turn the Click Wheel sound on again, set Clicker to On.

  • How do I stop iTunes from highlighting 'Now Playing' song

How do I keep iTunes from switching to and highlighting the 'Now Playing' track each time it switches tracks? It's quite annoying when scrolling my library or syncing a product with certain music and it then switches from Z to A as that is now the current track. Any insights?

    Hello Garrett,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with iTunes launching unexpectedly. I recommend reviewing the following article to see if any third-party plug-ins could be causing the problem:

  • My contact list is in a mess, thanks to ios 7 FaceTime.

Before ios 7, we have a choice to FaceTime the number or email. Now, we don't have the choice, it's up to FaceTime to decide which to call.
So in order to call a particular person on their email or phone, I have to create a new contact that only has his email or phone. Some of my friends have multiple numbers due to the reason that they travel a lot. So I have to create multiple contacts for them. Now that I have multiple contacts for many of my close contacts, it's annoying to scroll through the long name lists for the same person. I felt like technology going backwards where we can't combine contacts.
Now that apple forces everyone to upgrade to ios 7, it becomes more problematic for my parents who aren't very good in technology. They get so confused.  I left my ipad home for my children which my parents can reach. But now they can't because FaceTime kept connecting to me.
Sometimes I don't understand why apple implement certain crazy rules like this. I feel like being back to child time when parents set certain rules for me to follow.

Yikes! Let's work on getting you down to one copy of each contact, nanalovespopa. How do you back up your contacts? Do you use Backup Assistant Plus, Blackberry Link, an alternate method, or a combination of a few?

  • Spotify UI needs to be more condensed, not more like iTunes

I would like the search results to show up as in the old UI-design. The new UI-design is horrible, beside the point that Spotify is starting to look more and more like iTunes for no good reason. It all comes down to wasted screen real estate. First of all the new search is wasting space on the sides while simultaneously truncating Artist name and album name. The new search also wastes roughly half of my screen before the search results come. This leads to unnecessary scrolling and I am using an 1920x1200 display!, this must be even more irritating on smaller resolution displays.I have outlined my thoughts in picture1 and picture2 So I guess my idea is that Spotify needs to think in terms of screen real estate. The primary goal needs to be to present as much information as possible in one screen. The old UI did a perfect job for this. There where clear lists and still album art to see what was going on. It also had its own distinct look and feel it felt genuine in some seance. Copying the look and feel of iTunes feels second class somehow, like Spotify desperately tries to be something else. But there is so much other aspects the needs to be fixed with Spotify then the look and feel of its UI.

I have to chime in on this one too. I'm a long time Spotify user and a graphic designer. The design was great before the recent update. There is so much wasted space now. One tthing I miss is the little blurb at the top of the page in Artist view that gave several lines  of the intro to the artist Biography.  Now I have to click on the full Biography link to read anything. While this might not seem like a big deal, having that blurb was really convenient and attention grabbing.  Now I have less of a desire to click the Biography link. Another grievance is the Top Tracks section of the Artist page. While it's great that they increased it from 5 to 10, the new mini album icons take up so much room! Plus I loved being able to star a track right from the Top Tracks list withouth having to hunt for it in the Albums list. Sure, the little icons help find the album quickly, but it's still annoying to scroll and hunt.  And what's with the side by side crap? Now I can't click on the top track and shift+click down through the next album to select all the songs, it skips the 9 other tracks. That should be fixed. And of course, color! This might sound like nitpicking, but it really makes a big deal. So many people spend hours on end on their computer each day. For those who have to stare at a screen for a long time, a bright interface is a bad idea.  Sure, it looks pretty, but that's not what it should be about. I want to hear music, and I want a power, intuitive tool to get the job done. If the color and design are going to bug people, guess what? People aren't going to interact with your product as much. They're going to do what I do now, set a long playlist, minimize the window, and forget about all the extra goodies you've worked so hard to pack into your software. Spotify's color and layout was spot on before. If you want to mess with the color, cool. But could we have some options to change it from the preferences pane without having to download and install add ons or skins? (wow that was long, sorry. there's my two cents)

  • When expanding folder in list view, finder always go to top. How to stop it?

How to make finder not going to top back again whenever expanding a folder in list view? It just like clicking go to top on a website. i have a lot of subfolder, but when i expand it, finder show back the top list folder(zuupp to the top, grrr!!!), it so annoying to scroll back down just to get back where the last folder expand.

18 months later someone finally responds to you.  I dislike this behavior very much and cannot find a workaround.  The current push by Aple is to make the smaller devices more accessible which is radcially compromising the desktop experience.  I asume you have updated to Mavericks by now.  The auto-sizing columns remains an issue as well.  If this is driving you bonkers too.  Use TAG View and the auto resize to file name length returns.
