Another 10.4.8 update problem

After running the 10.4.8 updater on my MDD dual 1G, the system will not shut down nor restart. When booted up in OS 9.2, the system will restart and shut down from the menu. I'm concerned, since during the upgrade the system hung at the end and I had to hit the power button. Aside from the restart-shutdown issue, the system seems to run normally.
I have performed full maintenance with Cocktail, updated pre-binding information, fixed permissions. Also checked disk with Disk Utility and optimized directory with Diskwarrior, both of which reported no problems whatsoever with the disk. Also reset PRAM. The system is attached to an IOGEAR miniview USB KVM switch, which it had been working fine with prior to update and seems to be working OK now.
Any suggestions as to a fix? Can I archive and reinstall with my old Tiger installation CD or do I need to zap my hard drive? "Say it aint so, Joe!"

Hello Thomas.
Did you use Software Update or did you download the 10.4.8 PPC Combo Update?
Since the system hung at the end forcing you to hit the power button and a hard shut down, I would try re-installing the 10.4.8 Combo Update since you have already done just about everything else.

  • Another 10.4.9 Update Problem...my fault?

I may have caused this one myself...During the software update I went to quit a program that was running and accidently selected something (I am not sure what) under the Apple Menu. My iMac immediately went to the login screen. I was able to log back in but could not shut down or restart.
After a hard power down my iMac would not restart at all, kept getting to the screen with the startup scroll bar but would never progress. I ran Techtool Pro and managed to get it to start again but it still has issues.
On the right side of the menu bar I only see my spotlight icon, no time, bluetooth, or any other icon. If I put my mouse on the right side of the menu bar I see the spinning beachball.
If I start in Safemode they will show up. I am pretty sure that this is a startup issue...something corrupt but I do not know what to do to solve this issue.
Some more info: According to my About this iMac I have 10.4.9. I have repaired disk permissions several times. Started up from my Install DVD and repaired permission and ran First Aid. I tried uploading the combo update and I have an error "Mounting Failed." Also, I can not always restart. It will go to the blue screen with the spinning cogwheel.
Any advise would be helpful. Thanks...Lenny

Thanks. I think you have the only answer. I also have no bootable backup. So Archive and Install is the only option. The update went fine on my Macbook Pro and Powerbook, on my Mini, big problems. Why?
I did have iTunes running and had to quit, but the iTunes update went fine.
The OS X update couldn't be completed - and then I attempted to reboot, and all I get is the cog wheel, it won't boot.
So I checked and repaired disk permissions and the Disk, and it did find problems, I didn't make note of, but it said they were repaired. Tried to reboot, no go. It also won't create a Disk Image of my HD - Error 39? Anything I can do short of Archive and Install, Data is backed up, but re-loading apps is a pain the ...From now on, I'm waiting before running any OS X update. I ran into a similar problem with my x server, didn't wait or read release notes, now I have to for all my macs. PITA

I am using a Focusrite scarlett 2i4 and an Alesis Q61 midi controller. Weirdly, just trying to put a bass line down on a track using the Alesis, the bass sound goes out of tune with the track during recording only. This is very frustrating! I surely can't be the only one experiencing this?

    Hi
Time lost could be a problem, but.....
Sadly, I don't think that there are any Apple docs relating to networked storgae issues with Logic. Other than a 'school' or 'business' setup, NAS/OD/AD setups are not usual circumstances for audio.
If the issue is one of data backup & security, it may be enough to automatically backup the students local work folders to the NAS.
If the issue is one of the Users being able to work from any Mac and pick up their files from the server, you are not likely to resolve this problem, without copying the files to the Local Mac.

  • 10.5.1 update problem

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help me. New to Macs- loving it so far, but am having one problem.
Just updated the software the other day from 10.5 to 10.5.1. I used the software update button to do this. I am on a dial up connection (live too far out in the hills to get broadband) and this update took over 10 hours to download - a pure nightmare. Once finished, I had to restart the computer. On doing this, I got a blue screen with a bar which didn't move at all and a message saying that it was configuring the software update. Nothing happened at all. I eventually switched the computer off at the main switch at the back of the screen and restarted. My OS was still showing as 10.5, so I hit the update button again. It showed again that I was needing to update, but showed that the update was already downloaded and I had to restart the computer. I tried this again, but same thing happened.
    Any suggestions?
I read on another post about the same problem, and someone suggested downloading the update direct from the apple site. But does this mean me having to download the whole thing again? As you can all imagine, a dial-up connection is not the ideal for big updates like this. Is there another way around this?
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Liz

Thought I would give an update of this problem just in case it may help someone else in future.
Smokerz very kindly offered to send a disc with the updates to me, since I have to use a dial up connection. I was very grateful for this offer - however I'm in Scotland, he's in the States, so thought I'd be quicker visiting a friend who has broadband and downloading the updates onto a disc myself. I did that, and Bingo! the 10.5.1 update works.
I guess, probably due to my bad dial-up connection, I had originally downloaded a bad copy of the update. So in the end, it was a simple solution.

  • 10.5.7 update problems

After installing the 10.5.7 update, Mail, iTunes and iPhoto will not run anymore. Anyone else having this problem?

Before I came to these apple discussions re: update problems with 10.5.7, I tried to update this version yesterday and at the end of the download this message came up, the update "Mac OS X update" can't be saved. The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed to Apple.
I got the same message. The downloaded file that generated the message was only about 560 KB, indicating it was an incomplete download. I moved it to the trash & tried again. The second download attempt succeeded. I had a minor if nerve-wracking issue with the update (the blue looping screen reported in another topic in this forum) but after a forced shutdown & restart the update was completed successfully.
I have since updated my two other Macs so all those listed in my profile are now running 10.5.7. All do so without any problems & in fact work better & more stably than ever before.
I doubt that I'm unusual in this respect. Some users will have problems but I believe most won't, & for those that do most problems will turn out to be caused by something other than the update itself. So it has been for every previous Leopard update; I see no reason to think this one will be any different.

I bought my iPhone 5 C last week and is still all brand new. My phone was alright thses days but suddendly when i pressed the Home button to get out of an app, it didn't respond and also when i want to see the time I press the Home button but it doesn't show the lock screen. Do I need to go to an Apple Store or is there another way to fix this problem? I have read the Helping Center in the Apple Web but still it didn't help to solve my problem. Can someone please help me?

Getting your notifications is definitely important and we understand not wanting to miss anything katieb373. You have reached the right place for assistance in getting this working for you again. Has your phone completed any recent software updates right before this happened? You can reset the network settings to see if that will resolve the issue by following the steps http://vz.to/1uO6qTU in the link. Please try this and let us know the results.

  • Safari update - problem with magic mouse

Hi all, I recently installed safari update to 5.1 (6534.50) on a mabbook pro OS X 10.6.8. Ever since update, I've been experiencing the problem with safari reloading pages and kicking me out of websites that use flash player (back to log-in screen). I can deal with that by using another browser, however the update has really messed up my magic mouse. At first, every time I put my macbook to sleep or shut it off, the mouse would stop responding when I woke the mac up. I would have to disconnect the mouse and reconnect. But this was really eating up my batteries, so this morning I shut the mouse off when I put the mac to sleep. Now it won't connect at all. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help!

    Thanks Carolyn and Barry,
I did what Carolyn suggested - moving the .plist file into the trash. I have not resetting the PRAM or SMC yet.
When I go to system preferences>Bluetooth, I get a screen that says:
Bluetooth power is off. To use Bluetooth, first you must turn it on. (Note - my mouse is turned on)
Both ON and DISCOVERABLE are checked.
In the middle of the screen, it says No Devices (Set Up New Device...)
When I select set up new device, it finds my device and attempts to pair but is unsuccessful.
Resetting the SMC and PRAM scares me. After reading the links that Carolyn provided, I remembered another weird issue I had with my mac shortly before the update and mouse issue. For some reason, my clock suddenly became out of sync and I was on a 2000 date. I got an error message and reset the clock manually. Could this be the cause of my mouse issue? I feel like every step I've taken to get my mouse working again has made the problem just a little bigger!
    Thanks again for helping me!

  • Installation Problems, Permissions Problems, SW Update Problems, Solved

I'm posting here to relate some problems I've had and how I ultimately solved them, in the hope that it might help somebody.
The following relates to OS 10.5.4 on an imac PPC 1.8.
It started (at least the first symptom I noticed was) with Super Duper not working to auto-clone my drive, because the first thing SD does before running a clone job is to repair permissions on the subject drive. The repair permissions task failed with "the underlying task failed" error.
So I tried the manually repair permissions from Disk Utility and got the same "the underlying task failed" error. It's a bit alarming not to be able to repair permissions. I tried a reboot, no change. This persisted for at least a week as I didn't have time to aggressively go after it.
Then I purchased DiskWarrior (again - owned it years ago in Sys 9 days), as in my experience that was the "if all else fails" fix for everything directory-related. I booted from another blessed drive (do people still say that anymore? lol, showing my age) and ran DW on the drive in question. Sure enough DW found and fixed about 150 problems. Great I think, reboot from the original drive, run Disk Utility, repair permissions...nope! Same error. What now? I checked the console installer log for more and all the errors looked like "failure to write" permission type errors. Grr.
Verify Disk ran OK. I checked the SMART status and it was OK, as I was by now worrying about the physical drive.
Then along comes the 10.5.5 incremental update in Software Update and I get the following error: "The Installer could not install some files in "/" check permissions". Doh! Same thing with the Java update. Since I can't repair permissions I'm stuck.
So now I have only one course of action (well maybe there were others, but this is what I did) which was to do an Archive and Install. My OS X DVD is 10.5.0 so that is what I got of course when I reinstalled.
Running Disk Utility after the A&I allowed me to repair permissions successfully. Some progress. But now I had a slew of updates to get back to the present version of everything. Most installed successfully, except the 10.5.5 combo update. For that I got "package contents could not be validated". Rats.
So I decided (after reading here about SW update problems especially with combos) to manually download the 10.5.5 combo. For some reason running SW Update under 10.5.0 gave me download rates of 32kb/s, where I am used to 1.1MB/s. Projected download time 3 hrs....no way! So I booted back to my 10.5.4 clone and downloaded the 612MB at normal speed there. I downloaded the 10.5.1 incremental as well just in case.
Finally I was able to run the 10.5.5 combo (manually downloaded) successfully. Check Disk Utility and repair permissions...all good. Run SW Update and get the Java update, all good.
    Deep breath. Phew.
So there you have it. I was able to fix it all. I probably didn't need to buy DW (but it's so great I'm ok with that) as I conclude now that the A&I ultimately was the real fix. It was a very frustrating experience though, especially with SW update giving me a bad download.
I'm hoping that this post might now show up in searches and help somebody out there.
    Cheers
    G

I don't think you have either of those kernels... as they don't exist.  I assume you meant that you are using 3.10.5 and supposedly have 3.10.6 installed.  You issue is a bit of a catch 22, as you are unable to mount the ESP (no vfat module matching your running kernel), yet mounting the ESP would be required in order to properly udpate.  I imagine that you actually have the correct kernel as /boot/vmlinuz-linux.  But whatever mechanism you use to copy it from that location to the ESP didn't work.
You are going to have to boot from live media, and fix this from a chroot.  Please search around for how to do this, as this information is all over the place.
Looks like I'm in for a treat. I chroot-ed, did a full upgrade in case there was an even newer kernel (and there was, 3.10.7). After the upgrade I copied /boot/vmlinuz-linux, /boot/initramfs-linux.img and /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img to /boot/efi/EFI/arch/ renaming the files vmlinuz-arch.efi, initramfs-arch.img, initramfs-arch-fallback.img respectively. I unmounted everything and rebooted. Now reFINd freezes as soon as it tries to boot Arch.

  • Music & iTunes Update Problem

    Hi Everyone,
I'm soooo hoping that someone here can help me out. I'm totally stumped and have no idea what else to try.
I plugged my iPhone 3GS into my pc the the day before yesterday to clean up my music and clear off some of the apps. I started by deleting all my music so that I could start again. I also asked it to transfer any purchases that I'd made over to iTunes.
It wouldn't transfer the purchases, I don't remember if I got an error or not, I know I should have taken note but I didn't think much of it at the time. Then I tried putting music on my phone. Things went alright for a little bit and then I started getting errors telling me that it couldn't read the disk (I'm pretty sure that's what it said) and then it was telling me that my music files were corrupt, yet the music that I was transferring has been in my iTunes since I bought my phone a couple of years ago. I checked all the music and it was all playing fine and the files weren't missing or anything like that.
I unplugged my phone and checked my music and there was nothing there. When it's plugged in it shows there is music but as soon as I unplug it, no music. This kept happening over and over. I didn't get any error numbers or anything like that, so I googled my problem found the most common solutions were to update my iTunes (which I did need to do though I didn't realise) and to delete my photo cache. I couldn't download the latest iTunes because I didn't have any internet at home and for some reason it just wouldn't download on my friends internet when I connected to her wifi through my laptop. I went to the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and did a repair of iTunes aswell.
After deleting the photo cache and doing the repair though, I plugged my phone and it worked fine. Got a bunch of music on there. I thought the problem was fixed, so yesterday afternoon I sat down to put the rest of the music on and the problem started all over again.
So today, after finally getting some internet credit (I'm on a prepaid plan) I downloaded the latest iTunes and went to install it. I wouldn't work. All got was the pop up telling me it couldn't verify the program and I did I want to run it. Clicked 'yes' and nothing happens. Tried again by right clicking and running as admin, still nothing. Deleted that copy and re-downloaded another. Still the same problem. Tried updating through iTunes itself and got an 'invalid signature error'.
Here is what else I've done to try and resolve the problem:
    Turned off my firewall.
    Rebooted my computer.
Followed the instructions on this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/5892486#5892486
I've been using Chrome to download iTunes so I'm now about to follow the instructions from this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1406 to see if that makes any difference.
If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be pushy, I'm just giving this a quick bump in the hopes that it's seen a bit more...plus, I wanted to add a quick update.
I used IE 9 (I think it is, the latest IE) to download iTunes, instead of clicking save I clicked 'run' and when it finished downloading it told me it was an unsafe file and wouldn't run it. I wouldn't even give me the option to ignore IE's opinion and run it anyway. So I'm now off to my friends to see if I can get it to download using her internet and see if that makes any difference.
Also, if I were to update to the latest firmware using my current iTunes (which is 4.2.2 I think) would that possibly make a difference or would it more than likely just create more problems? What about restoring my phone through my current iTunes, would that possibly work?
    Thanks again.

What's going on? and How to fix it my Leopard Software Update Problem

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

Does it go through properly this time?

  • App updater problem

The Updates screen on all of my iPads comes up blank.  Why??  Is Apple doing something with its server? or Is this due to something else?  All other screens in App Store are functioning normally.  Very puzzling....

There is a problem with Apple’s servers that only they can fix. The problem has been going on for several days. You can try rebooting first and see if that gets the apps to show up in the updates tab.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
According to Fly150 in another discussion, this will work.
This is a workaround only and not a fix. If you want to update the Apps while waiting for Apple to fix Updates:
    1. Go to App Store
    2. Select Purchased
    3. Select All
    4. Scroll down to find the Apps showing update
    Select update on the Apps
Hopefully the red notification number will go away after the updates are applied.
Another option is to update your apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the updated apps to the iPad.
    1. Launch iTunes
    2. Click on Apps in the list under the Library heading in the left Sidebar.
Click on Updates at the top in the window on the right
    Update all of the apps
Connect your iPad and Sync with iTunes
If you do not see the sidebar in iTunes 11 - go to View>Show Sidebar from the iTunes menu at the top.

    HI,
You can setup your Yahoo account via Mac Mail.
Open the Mail app. From the menu bar click Mail / Preferences then select the Accounts tab, then select *Account Information*. Click + at bottom of the window under Accounts.
That way you don't need Safari to access your Yahoo mail account.
Since you haven't updated your software as yet, you should do that. Bear in mind, the percentage of users that post with 10.6.5 update problems here are less then 1% of all Mac users. Being a tech support forum it's normal to see posts for help. But not everyone has problems with updates. Very difficult to compare one users experience to another given the mix of third party apps, peripherals, and devices. No two systems are identical.
Click your Apple menu / Software Update... make sure and repair permissions after the updates are installed.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Always make sure there is enough free space on the startup disk. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*

However, when I go to try to sync both computers I never get the box to enter that key on either one. That is my problem. So should I try and get a new sync key and see if that works.

  • Update problem - VBDATA table

    Dear All,
We have update problems in our Quality systems, and also in every R/3 system that we create from a Production system copy.
Sometime the UPD and UP2 work processes hung without apparent reason.
In the SM50 I can see one or more of my update processes running for a lot of time (many hours) on the table VBDATA without perform any action.
In the tcode SM12 I donu2019t see any kind of lock, and I donu2019t understand why only sometime this problem happens.
Of course, from the SM13 I can see that during this problem the system is not able to perform any kind of update.
As I told in the beginning of the message, I have the same problem in other two R/3 systems, both created with a system copy from the production system.
The Production and the Developer systems seem not affected by this problem.
Have you got any idea about the reason of the problem?
Even if the Production systems is not directly affected, all the IT department is not able to work on the Quality system (or any other Test system), and the only workaround is to kill the UPD (or UP2) WPs affected.
    Thanks in advance,
    Federico Biavati

    Good point!!
After the reorganization (ST14 u2013 Reorganize update requests) the table VBDATA is empty.
Iu2019ll check and Iu2019ll let you know if the problem is definitively solved.
    Thanks for you help,
