Another 4.5 Issue

Hi,
I also recently upgraded to 4.5, yesterday actually, bt then I got the App Error 523. After fixing that, I notice my sms's [on my messages list] have a red exclamation  to their left. Also that 'Compose' icon is very dodgy. I've had four different outcomes with it.
1) I click it then select a contact and it goes straight to compose email screen. this is cool.
2) It prompts me to which number I want to sms (even if the contact has an email address)
3) It prompts me to which number I was to place a call
4) It prompts me if I want to place a call or not (even if the contact has a 'mobile' number)
What exactly is this icon intended to do?It's all random, well at least to me. Should we expect a patch soon...LOL...service pack.

Welcme to the Supprt Frums!

  • Another Yosemite speed issue

This is yet another Yosemite speed issue. I've done some reading around and read the FileVault can cause an issues, I took a look and I've always have FileVault disabled.  I installed EtreCheck and the results came up with a lot of RED and "FAILED". Unfortunately, I have no clue how to being to read this and was hoping someone could shed some light onto this for me.
Here are my results: (Just trying to right-click and paste this took almost a minute)
    Problem description:
Installed OS X Yosemite and now Macbook runs extremely slow. I have had FileVault disabled the entire time.

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • Another ODBC configuration issue?

    Hello all,
I am trying to setup an ODBC datasouce based on Oracle XE databases.
What I have done until now:
    1. Install Oracle XE 11G
    2. Install Oracle Client (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/downloads/index-101290.html)
When I go in the ODBC administrator, I can only see a MS SQL server driver. No Oracle driver at all.
I assume there are manual configurations to be done to get the Oracle driver in the ODBC administrator, but I do not know how to process.
    Could someone please help me?
    Thank you very much.

  • Another -8 error issue Please Help!

I know this is becoming redundant, but I have been reading through alot of the existing threads regarding the issue and I have not been able to figure this out.
The two machines in question are a Macbook Pro (mine) and my friends brand new Macbook. We are both running new versions of iChat Av. Initially there were no problems with video conferencing, we were both on the same network. I didnt start to get the -8 error until we tried video chat each of us on our own network. I have been receiving the 8 error almost every time a video chat is initiated, however, sometimes we are able to connect.
From what I can tell from these posts, there are a number of things that might be causing this problem. I guess I need some clarification on specifically what these things may be. What is UPnP and how does it effect video chatting? Can I assume that the issue is with the other parties network since it worked perfectly over my network? Is there any specific configuration for the firewalls on our macs that need to be set up? Do I need to alter the settings on the PC that their router is connected to?
Any help, suggestions, solutions, or just some direction would be GREATLY appreciated!

Sounds like Ralph is the official answer man. Ralph, maybe you can help me with mine as well. I am having new issues that I didn't have a few months ago. I have been using my iMac to video chat with family on a PC running AIM. This was working successfully for me for a few months(after I did some port forwarding in my netgear router). Recently (within the last 3 weeks) it quit working altogether. An added issue is that I can no longer connect with another family member's MacBook (same error message -8) that was working previously. Any help?
I am attaching my error log.

  • Another Basic Installation Issue

I've been using CS3 design premium for 4 years now without any major issues.
Yesterday I allowed Adobe updater to run an update for Illustrator. An error appeared just as the process began stating that, "The update could not be completed. Reinstall illustrator". Okay so I booted up this morning and when I opened illustrator, I got an "error loading plugins" and a large number of plugins are no longer available for use ( tracing tools, symbols, etc. about 12 to 14 items in all!). They are not even listed for selection from the "window" dropdown menu.
So, my question is, how do I JUST reinstall illustrator? I put in the disk, and chose the option to open containing folder...I see only the setup for a total install of the whole creative suite. . . no exe files for installing individual programs (unless I'm missing something).
I am in the middle of a very large project and can not spend too much time fooling around with this.
    Please help asap. Thanks!

    Thank You!
Actually, I read in another forum that when installing over a non functioning program, Adobe scans and repairs files as a "reinstall" instead of install.
SO, I took a chance and inserted the installation disk. Rather than run the autorun option I opened the containing (adobe CS) folder and selected "setup.exe" (at this point I had fear that it would start the "whole" installation process, However. . .) I was then given the option to re-install. and offered the various programs to install only those I wanted (in this case illustrator).
No time wasted with an uninstall, and no issues whatsoever. It went smooth and I was up and running perfectly again!
Adobe rocks. So often they forsee the inevitable. . . not always, but so often! --and it just feels good when things WORK.

  • Another external drive issue with Frontrow

I've already looked at these treads,
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1511877&tstart=2
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8593111&#8593111
But they aren't really everything. I have an external drive that I have my Movies, TV Shows, and Music on. I changed the location in iTunes, and everything imported fine. My AppleTV sees all of them just fine. However Frontrow won't. I can put an alias in the Movies folder as described, but then I don't see anything in the TV Shows menu option in FR. Sure they are listed under the movies, if I put a shortcut in there for them. I want Frontrow to work just as it did when all my media was on the local drive, how do I do that?

    Hello Brett!,
A rule i usually live by when purchasing externals, is to firstly check the file format (many are factory formatted in NTFS or FAT32) and if that is the case then change them to HFS+ using disk utility. That is of course if you intend to only use it with your mac, for example i use an external formatted in FAT32 and it works on Windows and Mac.
Secondly its a good code of practice to make sure the drive spins up, as that is the easiest way to check for a dodgy powersupply.
Thirdly and hopefully finally, if those tips don't work then try mounting it on another mac or pc and see if it is detected in any form, that'll tell you if there is a connection issue.

  • Migrating "Documents" from one user to another without permission issues

    Hi,
I'm facing an issue with permissions on files I have moved from one users "documents" to another users "documents" folder.
To cut a long story short, I have installed a new HD in my iMac and have cleanly installed Snow Leopard. In addition I have created a new user (user1) and have also used time machine to recover my original user files using migration assistant (user2).
I wanted to start off with a fresh user (user1), so wanted to copy specific files across from my old account (user2) but no application files or settings.
I have managed to do this for iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, Mail, iCal and Address Book, however I'm having issue with my "Documents" folder.
Basically I think I initialy moved the "user2" (old) Documents folder into the "shared user" account, logged into "user1" (new) and copied over the files. I thought it was all good, however when my Wife attempted to duplicate her resume to edit a new version OS X requests the users password, also we are unable to rename an existing file or open the documents then save, as we do not have the correct permissions.
I have looked at the permissions and it shows that
    user2(old) has read/write
    staff has read
    everyone has read
This appears to be the same for all files(except "staff" is replaced with "wheel"). When I add user1(new) read/write to the list and apply to all subfile, it does not update all files. I really don't want to be updating all the files seperatly.
Since doing this I also moved the files back to user2(old) then used "copied" the documents folder in the same way as above. Still the same issue.
Is there a correct way of moving files between users which will remove any permission issues? As I must have done something wrong.
    Thanks
    Chris

To move files from Account A to Account B:
    1) Log in as A
    2) Move all the files to /Users/A/Public (don't move any system-created folders like Documents, Pictures, etc. Just move their contents.)
    3) Log in as B
    4) Navigate with Finder to /Users/A/Public
    5) Drag the files to the Desktop (this will make new copies of them with correct permissions for B)
    6) File the new files away in the appropriate places in B's home folder
    7) Log in as A and delete the original copies of the files from A's home folder
If you have already moved files from A to B the incorrect way (i.e. by using /Users/Shared) and are running into permissions issues, fix them by logging in to an Admin account and entering these two Terminal commands:
sudo chown -R userb ~userb (this one changes ownership of everything in B's home folder to B)
sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~userb (this one ensures that B can read and write to everything in his home folder)

"CCleaner" is a scam and it may well have corrupted the operating the system. Get rid of it according to the developer's instructions, then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Just Another N97 Major Issue ..

Here's Another issue in the Awesome N97 ... I left it recording a Video for like 22 min , then I pressed Stop .. It then
said " Processing " .. then .... TADAAA .. Nothing .. came back to camera View .. No Captured Video was there or even processed
     Lovely Phone :/
Lens Scratch - Freeze After Phone Calls - SLOW - Self Restart -5MP Camera is Nowhere Near the Sonyericsson 3.2 Awesome camera -Vibrating issues - Mass Storage issues - & the list Goes On & On ..
This Device Does EVERYTHING that you dont want it to do for 620 $
I WILL NEVER GET 1 INCH close to a Nokia Device .
Thank You for wasting my Time & Money .
    N97 .. Working or Not , it's still a *bleeing* Rip OFF .

I wouldn't recommend the N97 to anyone because it doesn't do what it says it does on the tin.  It's the worse phone I have ever had and I've gone and tied myself in a 2 your contract so I better learn to live with it.
My handset constantly crashes (I would say a few times a week) it can be when a call is coming through to my phone.  The only way to get it working again is to switch it off and reseat the battery.  On a couple of ocassions it hasn't come back on and I've had to leave it and retry it and eventually I've been able to switch it back on.
My phone crashed this week and I got some sort of memory error (yes on a device that has 32GB internal memory and I have a 16GB memory card).  I went into the file manager and noticed that the phone memory was low.  I managed between clearing memory errors to get into some settings and changed the save location to mass memory and memory card.
Prior to the crashing I had a problem with the phone not holding the charge, luckily when I took it back to the Phone4U shop the assistant tested the charger on another N97 had the same problem so swapped the faulty charger for a new one.
Another weird thing my N97 does is that although I have a default ring tone set the phone intermittently rings with a different tone.
The BBC iPlayer doesn't work, well that's not strictly true I can get to it but every single TV show I try to view comes up with "Sorry, but to play to BBC iPlayer programmes you need to switch to a WIFI connection".  So I exit BBC iPlayer and connect to the WIFI and then go back into BBC iPlayer and it still comes up with the same WIFI message.
Oh and yes I recently updated the firmware... and guess what it didn't make a blind bit of difference.
Nokia I challenge you to sort my N97 within the next 2 weeks and if not you provide me with a phone up to the same value from your Nokia store.

  • Another jai installation issue

i am a liitle confused about the many installation options of jai. so my first try was to get the jdk version and install it. but after installation only one file with "jai" in name was in "jre/lib/ext/" - i forgot the name - but it isn't in this list: http://download.java.net/media/jai/builds/release/1_1_3/INSTALL.html#Files
i tried to use jai within eclipse but i couldn't import java.media... :-(. so how to install and use the jdk version?
after two reinstalls i tried "jai-1_1_3-lib-windows-i586.exe" this one is working if imported via "add external jars" in eclipse. but is this version supporting "native acceleration" ???
and for the sake of completness: what is the difference of the jre version?
    thx in advance

    Thank You!

  • Another no chime issue -- TIBook Onyx 667 mHz

Hello, everyone! I have another no chime, grey screen issue with a Powerbook G4. I've read and searched the prior posts, but this one is a little different because the machine has no apparent physical damage but seems absolutely dead--no hard disk spin up at all. The only sign of life is a brief flicker of the screen when the power on button is pressed.
Here's what happened. The machine, which is a TiBook Onyx 667 mHz, was working fine, although the previous owner had reported that it wouldn't run from the battery, which turned out to be a third-party one. After I insulated every orange ribbon cable I could find with orange tape and put in an Apple battery a couple of months ago, that problem seemed to be solved.
Then my daughter knocked if off a counter and it dropped 5 feet to a hard floor. In my experience that usually results in broken hinges and a cracked screen, but in this case it apparently landed flat and, as I said, there's no evident physical damage, not even a dent.
However, now the machine won't start up at all--no chime, no hard disk spin-up, just the flicker of the screen, and I'm not sure if I'm imagining that--either from the battery or the AC adapter. Reseating the easy connectors to get to, doing a PMU reset, and swapping in a different hard disk makes no difference. In fact, I put the hard disk from this machine in another TiBook to access the files and it's fine.
There are other posts about dropped TiBooks, but the only one I found that seems to have anything close to these symptoms is a case in which dropping the machine damaged the logic board (didn't know that could happen, but apparently it can). If that's the case, I can try to find a good used one and replace it, but naturally I'd like to have a pretty good idea that's actually the problem before going that route and then perhaps discovering that the display is damaged too.
Anyone have any suggestions about anything for me to check or try at this point?
    Thanks!

    Just a couple other thoughts:
The inverter board is a separate component on the 667, but I'm not sure it would cause complete lack of response (chime, cap lock light, etc.).
Given that your 667 has no apparent signs of life, in sounds like maybe the DC power in board would be a place to start. Unfortunately, if my memory serves me correctly (certainly doesn't work that way all the time!), that's soldered onto the LB. Still, if you're considering a replacement LB, you probably can't hurt too much by poking around, and who knows, maybe something will be obvious. Just fyi, I wouldn't spend much on a LB, as fully functioning 667s don't sell for very much.
I know the power button can be purchased separately, but I doubt that's the issue.
Just for the heck of it, try one RAM module at a time in each slot. I don't think there's any way a damaged slot or module would cause complete lack of power indication, but I've heard of some strange cases with RAM/slots involved.

  • Yet another Quick TIme issue.

I made new audio in Digital Performer and imported an MOV file as the source video. The new file was saved as an MOV and plays perfectly on a mac. However, when I try to play this on my pc's QT, I have to load the new file first THEN the original file before both the video/audio play. Help!

OK, that makes total sense. Thank you very much Jon; that explains the issue very clearly. This of course begs another question though; how to I merge the new audio file and the original video file?
That may depend on how you plan to play the file. My preferred strategy is to create a new target file and prevent the original source files from being accidentally modified in case I need to repeat the merge sequence.
    1) Open the source files.
    2) Create a new empty player.
    3) Copy the individual files to the empty player in the order you wish them played.
4 Save the resulting new file as a stand alone file.
This merged file would play in most versions of QT based apps but maight be a problem in some versions of mobile device players which require content be "flattened" to individual audio and video tracks. (I.e., the QT 7 player can play up to 99 mixed data tracks but some versions of the mobile players do not.)

  • Yet another slow connection issue

My broadband speed is totally unreliable - and from a quick scan of the forums it seems I'm not the only one!
Much the same as numerous other posters, I'm paying for up to 8meg broadband but typically getting far less than that.  Being in a rural location i appreciate that the local phone exchange probably isn't the most high tech facility in the world, but we're only 2 miles away from it and the speed tester has recorded up to 7meg on occasion.  Today, and this seems to be an increasingly frequent occurence, the speed tester says "your IP profile is 250k".
We had an engineer out 3 weeks ago for the same problem but he could find no faults at the house, said there were no reported faults on the local exchange and the morning before he arrived the IP profile had already been reset to a more usable level.  Rang the call centre again today and after wasting about an hour trying to explain the problem then waiting for him to check things and call me back, then explaining the same thing over again, absolutely nothing has been resolved and they want to send out another engineer.
I have a couple of very simple questions which the customer services team seem incapable of answering:
    1. what is the reason for my IP profile being set so low?
    2. what needs to be done to fix it now?
    3. what needs to be done to stop it happening again?
I don't think the guy I spoke to actually knows what an IP profile is, let alone how to resolve a problem with it.  What is the point of a technical support helpline when the staff quite obviously have no technical knowledge?!

Have spent another hour of my life on the phone to BT helpline this afternoon.
Apparently the reason we hadn't received the call back yesterday was due to a "technical issue" at their end and the request had not been passed on to the engineer team.
Having gone through exactly the same conversation and process as on Tuesday, the helpline chap has run his tests and when pressed told me that he could determine no faults on the line.  An engineer might be able to determine other faults though so he would like to book an appointment for an engineer to call.
Unfortunately, even though I've waited 2 days for this already because they didn't pass on the engineer request the other day, they can't do anything to prioritise the call so I've now got to wait up to another 48hrs for somebody to ring me to book the appointment.  As its Thursday now, that probably means that it could Monday before that happens and therefore probably the middle of next week before the engineer actually gets to the house.  So another week of broadband that is barely faster than dial up.

  • Yet another CC billing issue

I had to update the credit card on file with my Creative Cloud account. Since then, the card has not been billed. The last payment was made on October 6. The information on file is correct, and has been for quite some time (even with multiple attempts to re-update it). Now access to my Adobe products has been suspended. I tried calling Adobe multiple times ... once hanging up after 45 minutes of being on hold, another time choosing the call-back option and never receiving a call back, and finally getting the recording that the wait time was between 90 and 120 minutes. One time I got through on chat, but after the unsuccessful session I was told to call Customer Support. Yet a connection to sales was near instantaneous.
These wait times are completely unacceptable. I understand that the attack on your servers has caused big headaches, but hire some temporary support staff to get through this.
Please, Adobe, help me out. I need to use your products for work.
    -Jon-

    Hi Jon,
I am so sorry for the inconvenience  faced by you, please provide me your contact number, if possible with an alternate contact number. I will follow up the issue.
I have send an email to you also, please respond.

  • Yet another tagged songs issue

Ok all, I have another question about tagged songs. I figured out how to buy a tagged song. On a windows machine, you have to hit the applications key and then there is a buy option. I bought two songs this way, but when I connected my IPod the other day to purchase a song I had tagged since I bought the last song, the buy option is no longer available. How do I buy the songs now?

I use the above Cooler Master PSU, zero issues. Has 4 pci-e connectors, so it's ready for quad sli if I ever want to go that route with my P6n Diamond. Has lots of different connection options, highly rated PSU. Not all Cooler Master PSUs underperform, just have to know what you're buying. The above supply also has 2 8 pin connectors so for instance when my GTX 295 arrives I'll have no trouble (card uses 6/8 pin). Reviews also can be helpful.

  • Yet Another P7N Diamond Issue

Apart from the ongoing problem I am still having in this thread I now have yet another dilemma. I bought a BFG 9800 GT OC2 as a upgrade and installed it the usual way ensuring I connected the 6 pin connector too and the pc does not boot up even after several attempts
Instead I am getting a strange beeping pattern one long beep then some shorts
Please if someone could shed some light I would greatly appreciate it even if its regarding my previous issue.
