Another 40 Gig Zen Xtra prob

I figured out my problem from before, windows screwed up with installing the drivers from the program, I had to install them manually, but I have a new problem. Since I fixed that, I tried to load the firmware on the Xtra, but it gave me a message saying battery levels are too low.. no problem I figured, i'll just turn it off and recharge it, well everytime I try to turn it off, it freezes up, my only way to fix it is to take the battery out, but when I replace it, it turns back on, I try to turn it off and it freezes up again, I guess installing the new firmware might fix it, but is the player capable of charging while it's turned on?

Ok...if you are trying to charge your 40 gb zen xtra and the zen xtra won't turn off or freezes...while taking the battery out, pull the plastic strip under the battery up and don't place the battery down for about 5 second, than you will be able to charge the player no problem.

• Zen Xtra Prob

I'm having a problem with my 30GB Nomad Zen Xtra. When I start it up, it goes in to Rescue Mode v.3 - Boot v.2, HW v0.0.
I tried 'Clean Up' and nothing happened. I tried Reload OS and it says 'Harddisk Problem'. Is there any way to fix this problem without reformatting? I have stuff that I don't want to lose.

A slight rattle, and feeling something is loose, is normal with a hard disk.
You can try the advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net at your OWN RISK. If you don't want to try this or are under warranty then contact Creative Support.
If you aren't under warranty you can contact Creative Support to see if they will repair it. If you want to try repairing it yourself, taking the risk the hard disk is at fault, then you can follow Rudi Cheow's excellent guide. There's also a thread here at the Zen Nomadness.net forum on compatible dri'ves, and the last page of Rudi's guide also has information on this.

• Major zen xtra prob

I just installed the newest firmware upgrade on my zen xtra and now every time it starts up, it statrts in rescue mode and i cant reload the os. I tried reflashing it with the firmware update again and all it says is "player not connected, please connect player." Even on the windows explorer, it shows up but it says i've only got 20MB of space on it even after i formatted it three times. I dont know what else to do, any help would be appreciated even it it means buying a new mp3 player which isnt really what i want to do. thanks.Message Edited by brammes on 05-29-2006 2:00 PM

Can you try entering Rescue Mode on the player? What happens when you try that?
If you can get in there, try the Reload OS option first, and then try loading the firmware again.

• Nomad Zen Xtra prob

Well, I just emailed support again but overlooked the (faster?) forums until now. Maybe someone can help me out... ------- EMAIL SENT -------- Hi, I emailed the customer support a while ago and got a generic reply as how to reset my mp3 player's OS. *This is not a software problem, it is a hardware problem... I want to send my Nomad Zen Xtra in to Creative to get it fixed and I will pay for the repairs.* Here is an original copy of the message: Hello, about a year ago I purchased my Creative Nomad Zen Xtra. Only a couple months into using it, I dropped the MP3 player on the headphone jack where my headphones were plugged in and the sound stopped working correctly. I think maybe that the soldering that is keeping the headphone jack on the circuit board is messed up or disconnected. Some sound does come out of one earphone when I wiggle the plug around a bit. How much do you think this would cost me? The player is no longer under its one year warranty, either. Thanks in advance. - Steve ----- Originally answered by Technical Support, Creative Labs Americas ----- Thanks, Steve-oMessage Edited by Jeremy-CL on 0-2-2005 0:08 AM

I?ve posted it before, but here we go again:
Two or three months after buying my 40GB zen xtra, the same thing happened to me. I deduced it was a battery problem and prepared myself to expand U$29 on a new one (I li've in Rio and it would be impossible for me to send it back for warranty). While I was looking for the new battery, I kept using it in my job and at home, with the power cord hooked up. I did it some times and one day, without any apearent reason, it started to charge the battery and ever since it never happened again. I friend of mine mentioned that these Li-Ion batteries can have this kind of problem. By that time, he suggested some charging manouveres to recover it but it was no needed. What I suggest you is to keep trying to charge it. You may be as lucky as me!

• I have 30 gig Zen Xtra is there something like Yahoo/Napster/Rhapso

Is there an unlimited monthly music plan service that will work with my player?

Not until a new MTP firmware upgrade. Please search the FAQ for "firmware" for more details.

• Zen Xtra v. Zen To

My original 40-gig Zen Xtra is kaput (for the reason why, check out this thread: http://forums.creative.com/creativel...ssage.id=05607).
It's served me very well... whatever problems I've had, I've been able to take care of quickly and with no need to post a help message here.
I've decided to get another Creative product... I want another 40-gig player, so it looks like it's going to either be another Zen Xtra, or the Zen Touch.
Right now I'm inclined to stay with the Xtra, because ) of the removable battery, and 2) the carrying case.
Anyone have any comments either way, pro-Xtra, pro-Touch, or pro-something else?

jpeltzer wrote:
If you're looking to stay within the world of Creative you may want to hold off until they release something like a 40GB Sleek or a 40GB Zen. The Touch and Xtra are both considered older models at this point and are supposed to be replaced by the Sleek/Zen (depending on your locale).
"Supposed" to be replaced, you say... is there any kind of timeframe for this? (Weeks, months, &c.)
GB size notwithstanding, how do the Sleek/Zen differ from the Touch and the Xtra? (The "depending on your locale" comment leads me to infer that the Sleek and the Zen are otherwise exactly the same.)
jpeltzer wrote:
The Touch is a bit smaller and has that great 24 hour battery life (i'm not sure if the battery life is still 24 hours after that new firmware came out though). The touch also has that groovy little touch strip that is certain to impress all of your friends. The xTra wins with ease of installing a new hard dri've (any notebook dri've will do) and with features (they've got audible and a few other things that the Touch doesn't).
Just FYI... the battery life is not that big an issue to me, only because I was re-charging the battery on a daily basis anyway. I don't know diddly (or squat, for that matter) when it comes to installing hard dri'ves, or what "audible" is, so those are moot points for me. (I just turn the EAX on, and leave it at that.)
As I mentioned in my original post, the removable battery was one of the reasons I favored the Xtra (in fact, when I got it the first time that was the deal-maker). Is the removable battery something I should be concerned about to that extreme, since the majority of M.P.3 players do not seem to have them?
And also FYI... the player I'm using now, as a stopgap, is a Sandisk Sansa GB with a 2GB SD card, for a total of 3GB. I had bought it while I owned my first Xtra, as an alternate player for those times when I didn't want to carry the larger machine. Also, what the hey, I get a kick of just shaking the player and movin' to the groove, which is something that's taboo (or tabu) with hard-dri've players but when it comes to flash dri've M.P.3 players you can shake until you bake. (I don't know if there are any flash dri've M.P.3 players larger than GB, I selected the Sansa because of its expandability. Creative, take note... :smileysurprised: )
I'm not rich by any sense of the imagination (a Judicial Grade 8 salary doesn't go very far ), but I don't want to go too long without a large-capacity M.P.3 player... the Sansa has its good points, but let's face it, if I was completely satisfied with it, I wouldn't have started this thread in the first place.

• Troubles with Zen Xtra 4

I just bought a 40 gig Zen Xtra and when booting it freezes at the EAX title screen...
when i boot it into the recorvery mode everything seems to be fin...but nope, i am unable to successfully complete any of the option listed except reboot...clean up, format, and replace OS, all bring up their window but just sit there forever saying 'formatting...', or 'erasing OS...'
any help here would be great!
It says rescue mode v.3, boot v.2, and Hw v0.0.

As per the FAQ post if rescue mode functions don't work the player is faulty. You need to contact support.

• NOMAD ZEN XTRA MENU VOICE R

I have a blind teenager who uses the 30 gig zen xtra and finds it very difficult to navigate the units menu,s. Is there an option or firmware that will read the menu to him as he scrolls through it when he uses the unit.

Unfortunately not. I guess it's a case of remembering the steps required to access each feature. I believe the Xtra has a back button, which should be useful in resetting back to the beginning of a sequence. It would also be good if Creative could add something like this in a future firmware.

• Creative ZEN Xtra Hangs on EAX Screen, Recovery Scr

Hi there. When I turn on my Zen Xtra it hangs on the EAX opening screen and when I use the Reset switch to go into the Recovery menu the menu shows up but I can't do anything, can't scroll the menu or select the option the menu starts on. I also downloaded the latest firmware for the player and when I tried to install it a message came up saying that the device wasn't connected when it was. Is there any other trick I can use to try to reformat/reinstall firmware?

If you do some research (although I'm going to save you the trouble).. there's this thing called "percussi've maintenance" that you both can try.. where you (at your own risk of course) smack the Zen Xtra on it's side toward your hand.. just give it a good thump, that's all.. thus freeing the hard-dri've's reading head from it's stuck position.
I bought a (supposedly broken) Zen Xtra on ebay for 60 bucks because of the issue you both have explained, and I got it working within thirty seconds after I opened the box. What a steal I keep saying to myself!
And if you happen to have the issue where you boot up the player and it goes from the 'Creative' screen to the 'EAX' screen, off and then on again, doing this in a continuous loop.. all you've got is a dead battery that needs to be properly charged. I bought another (supposedly broken) Zen Xtra on ebay, this time for 75 bucks, where I took the battery out, plugged in the 5V power adapter, let the thing boot up, waited until the backlight went off (it won't work unless the very minimum amount of juice is being pulled.. no backlight, usb connecting, music playing, etc.), and then dropped the battery back in while it was on.. and voila! A jump-started battery charge.
Sorry I crammed it into so short of an explanation.. I'm in a rush.. please feel free to message me privately with any questions.. But that should do it for y'all.

• ZEN XTRA - no repeat shuffle

I have the 30 gig Zen xtra and would like to use shuffle mode without repeating songs i.e. the shuffle once mode but it seems that this is not an option. As a result, I hear the same songs within the same playlist multiple times. Any thoughts, answers, suggestions? Is the "shuffle once" mode possible? If so, how?

I could be wrong (my wife says I frequently am), but I do not believe you will repeats in shuffle mode either. You can re-shuffle the list by pressing play 3 times quickly, but unless you do that, I think it simply plays the songs once in a random order.

• Zen xtra rebuilding libra

I have a 30 gig zen xtra. I got it in 04 and have had no issues with it. The past week it has been doing this "rebuilding library" after a cold boot (by cold boot I mean it has not been turned on for a day or two and shows the creative labs copyright screen.)After it rebuilds the library it works fine, but I am wondering if it is a sign of something bigger?I have not updated the firmware ever since I have had it the version is .0.0. Has anyone else had this issue? and what became of it'sIf i need to update the firmware which version is recommended?thxMessage Edited by merlin43 on 04-0-20072:53 AM

I recommend any version but the latest.
For the Xtra, avoid it like the plague. I've had nothing but problems... The same problems with two computers and two different Xtras.

• Zen Xtra continually rebo

My 40 gig Zen Xtra continually shuts down and reboots. It used to only do it when it was on battery power, but now it does it no matter what. I've tried to reformat it, and I've run clean up, but it hasn't changed anything.

It occurs no matter the charge on the battery. I haven't tried it with the AC adapter that came with it, but it recently happened with my car charger. Before that (a couple weeks or so), it would only happen on battery power.

• Zen Xtra bein du

ok, its the 40 gig Zen Xtra and i had all the new firmware and such workin FINE then my friend borrowed the battery for a bit and after i got it back i charged it and it worked fine just by itself but i connected it to my PC.. DIDNT WORK! so i tried clean up didnt help then i formatted.. didnt help.. so i removed OS... didnt help.. so now im stuck at the rescue mode and it isnt being detected right on my PC although it shows up fine in Device Managager and i already tried that registry fix they had on the KB but it didnt help! any ideas? its makin me mad

Remove all of the Creative Zen Related software (Zen Driver, MediaSource, Zen Plugin). Make sure your player is disconnected before you begin.
Download and install these in the following order (from Creative's Support Site):
. Zen Xtra Driver (must be from the site, CD version will not work)
2. Creative MediaSource (from the CD first)
3. Creative MediaSource (from the website, updated version installer craps out otherwise)
4. Zen Plugin for MediaSource (again, from the website)
5. Creative Zen Xtra Firmware for PlaysForSure Devices
Reboot each time the system tells you. After the installation of #4, reboot. Reconnect your player the system and it should recognize the Zen as an "MTP Device." You may also get a window (The "What Should Windows Do with this Device" window - and it will be blank). Close that Window.
On the player, on the Recovery Mode and Choose Reload OS. It should tell you at some point to start the process on the computer. Start the Firmware Update file and reload the OS (I suggest keeping the Zen plugged in AC power during the update). It will say that the update is the same as the firmware on the Zen, choose Update Anyway. Once the player reloads, the Zen should rebuild its library and you should be back in business.
Hope this hel
ps.
Cheers,
ShinjiT

• Zen Xtra start up probl

I START UP MY 30 GIG ZEN XTRA AND I GET AS FAR AS THE EAX SCREEN AND THEN IT STOPS. NO PLAYLIST WINDOW, NOTHING. I HEAR THE HARDDRIVE SPINNING THOUGH, I HAVE HAD THIS THING FOR A YEAR NOW. COULD IT BE THAT I NEED A NEW BATTERY? HELP.

I am having this same issue but I have some questions. This is a brand new zen xtra and it stops at the eax screen. I have read a few articles and attmpted to try the suggestions. I can get into the rescue and I start a disk cleanup, it shows the "scan disk" (LOL) as if its doing something but it appears not to be doing anything I am also not hearing the usual sounds of a hard dri've working while its sitting there...does this usually take a long time? I have also downloaded the latest firmware but am unsure how to go about updating with this lockup issue. I installed the drivers and windows 2000 is not picking up the device and also when i try and run the firmware update it of course says its not connected. I will be attempting to try and get my other work computer to recognize it this afternoon (XP). I really don't want to have to return this thing so any other ideas for me? How does the format function work on this device and how would i reload the OS?
Thanks for you time,
