Another .avi file question

Hi there,
I opened a quicktime movie in Mpeg Streamclip and exported to avi file.
I then burned it off onto iDVD for a customer. However, she could not open it as an .avi file from her PC (to put into power point) is there any way I can burn off a DVD in iDVD that allows another to extract the .avi file as an .avi file?
Thanks for any help!

.. thanks, what do you mean by PC compatible disc? ...
typical Mac-user question.. ;)) a Mac 'eats' all formats, a PC not.
depending on how or with what your burning a dataDisk, you are allowed to select a disk's 'format' ... if you're using the Finder (insert dvd-r, drag content on it, burn..) it will care to choose a format, a PC is able to read it ...

I'd like to transfer .avi files from my mac to my hard drive and put them on a PC but it doesnt seem to work. Assume its a conversiuon issue?

AVI is just a container. It really isn't a format. Where did the files come from and/or how were they created?

  • Avi File question

I have some Avi video files that I am trying to put on a DVD to be played in player. I have been using FFMPEGX to convert the files to DV, then putting them into iDVD and burning a disk. The whole process, particularly the rendering in iDVD takes a LONG time for each file (about 1 hour of video); any have a suggestion for a quicker method?

The problem is, AVI is not a 'FILE' - it's a file wrapper that can contain content encoded with quite a number of possible CODECs (many Windows only) and not all AVI files are Mac usable. I assume you've already tried the AVI files you have in iDVD.
iDVD '08 MIGHT be more 'accepting' of your AVI files, but I wouldn't count on it.
I use VisualHub to convert my problem AVI files from a small camcorder that records to SD media.. but if you are happy with ffMPEGx keeping using it (both programs are related but I just like the VisualHub user interface better).

  • No audio on .avi file after using Aut

    Friends,
Here is story.. I have a movie downloaded from net (I am not RIPPING DVD) in .avi format. but when I tried to play this file on ZVM I was facing problems of no audio(but junk chatter) and slow playing (though the movie plays nicely on Windows Media player or any other player)
I tried to reconvert this .avi file to another .avi file thru AutoGK, but the output of whole process is not having any sound (yeah the movie is playing on ZVM with correct speed but without audio).
In AutoGK--- advance options I used Mp3-VBR-28Kb
    ps.
. ? and codec used was Xvid..
    any idea what went wrong.
    Thanks in advance for help.

hmm, well, it all depends on codecs, and of course I would expect it to play fine on the pc
porting it over to a portable media player might insert issues
is the vision m capable of playing vbr audio is the question

  • I have a seagate 1tb hard drive and a 16gb memory stick, how do i transfer avi files from one to another as the click drag and drop wont work, please help?

i have a seagate 1tb hard drive and a 16gb memory stick, how do i transfer avi files from one to another as the click drag and drop wont work, please help?

    Greetings,
What happens when you drag it?
Make sure the drive you are moving the files to has enough available space to receive the file:
Click on the movie file and go to File >  Get Info and note the "size"
Check the drive to which you are moving the file to make sure it has enough available space: https://idisk.me.com/madisonfile-Public/web/finder-drive-available-space-and-for mat.html
Also note the format of the drive you are copying too.  If it is not Mac OS Extended or FAT (not recommended unless you are taking it to a windows computer) then that may be the issue.
    Hope that helps.

  • .AVI file format question

Upgrading from CS2 to Photoshop CS5
I found out after the fact that in order to edit video you need CS5 Extended.
So, I then went and returned regular and upgraded to Photoshop CS5 extended.
(See my other thread for details, but installing the 12.01 patch is not an option at this time.)
Try to use file open to open a .AVI file from one of my cameras and get a message of "unrecognized file format".
Was able to import the 7 second video into layers.
Checked support issues, and installed Quicktime 7.6.8
Also, due to 12.01 issues, reinstalled Photoshop CS5 Extended AFTER upgraded Quicktime to 7.6.8
Machine specs:  Toshiba Satellite P30  Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60 GHZ (Hyperthreading Dual Core) 2GB RAM ATI Mobility Radeon X600 Win XP Professional SP3 About 12 GB disk space available at install time.
Note that Quicktime will open the .AVI file in question with no problems, as well as Roxio software (trying to get rid of that with CS5)

I talked to support via phone and it appears the the problem is in installation.  The install of CS5 extended did not take over the regular install.  So, I need to start by completely uninstalling AGAIN and installed extended from scratch AGAIN.
I did try the program mention GSPOT as well.  It says AVI codecs are installed on the machine inquestion.  I will get more informaiton tonight afte rI do the re-install and see what happens.

  • Workflow question - fastest workflow from AVI files to DVD?

I have recently purchased my first Mac (it is fantastic!). I am currently experimenting with both '08 and '06 iMovie.
Right now my main priority is creating individual DVD's of each of my tapes that I have previously captured via WinDV on an XP system. Those tapes are stored, each clip separately, via AVI files on external hard disks.
Now I would like to, as quickly as possible, use either version of iMovie to burn a DVD that simply includes all the clips from a given tape capture. The plan is that these will be simply playable versions (a playable backup, if you will) of all the clips on each tape - I'll come back later and do edits to create "finished" DVD's.
Any suggestions as to the most efficient and quickest way to create the DVD's? (I've downloaded Streamclip also, but am not sure whether that will help me out at this point or not)
    Thanks in advance.

Any suggestions as to the most efficient and quickest way to create the DVD's?
The most efficient work flow in terms of application use would likely be iMovie HD here. Assuming your AVI files are "playback" and "conversion" compatible with QT, then they will be automatically converted during file level import for use in whatever project compression format you create for editing. In addition, this work flow offers more in the way of "effects" if desired and allows you to chapter files for iDVD use internally rather than having to go through GarageBand. On the other hand, if you are working with very short source files requiring little or no editing and a minimum of titles, transitions and/or chaptering, then iMovie '08 may be faster in terms of actual editing speed. Both applications have their own strengths and weaknesses and you should probably try a test project with both so that in the future you can select the proper one according to the needs of any given project.

  • AVI Files for iDVD ((QUESTION))

    Hello,
I took some digital video on my new digial camera.
The video files are AVI. I am able to play them via quicktime on my mac mini with no problem.
The issue I am having is when I want to burn the files into iDVD.. I get error messages. I can import the files fine.. Its just wen I get to the rendering phase I get an error.
Do I need to convert the AVI files to .MOV? What must I do?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    D.

Not all .AVI files us the same CODECs (AVI is really just a file 'wrapper') and I've have very mixed results using AVI files directly.
I use ffmpegX at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/ to convert my AVI files to DV Stream for use in iMovie/iDVD.

  • I cannot scrub an AVI file made in another adobe program.

When trying to play/scrub the video of a 1.3 gb AVI( made in flash professional) Premiere CS6 can load only a few frames and then the preview window freezes.
During this time my CPU usage hovers at 6-10% and memory usage is 1.5-2.5 GB out of 8.

  • A question about AVI files

I used to upload AVI files to my site in dotMac and then I sent the link to my family and friends and never I had a problem, but now when I upload the file never can be seen on the web. It appears the symbol of QT but nothing else happens when the page is full.
Please, what should I do? Maybe to convert the AVI film into a mpeg?

I couldn't view the file and don't know what video

    What camera created it?
I always have used a Canon PowerShot A70.

  • Yet another AVI question

......but this one is a bit different...My avi files play just fine....
Im running OS9 on a G3 MT with QT 5pro and DIVX 5. About a week ago i did some HD cleaning (always trouble) and i dont know what i did, but now, mpg files, and the like, autoplay, run, and close completely nomal, but when i open an avi file, it comes up as "untitled", it will not autoplay, and when closed, it asks me if i want to save changes that i never made....again, only with avi files....
    basicly driving me nuts...
I did not mess with QT prefs or extentions, cleaning only what i felt was old, harmless stuff...QT player prefs are set to "autoplay movies automaticly when opened"
I am a longtime, intellegent mac user but this really has me stumped...
any ideas are appreciated, and upgrading is not an option..
    thanks

  • Avi file does not have the same resolution as image file?

I'm using LabView with an IEEE-1394 camera and I set up the camera to record at a resolution of 1280 x 960 and can snap images and save them at that resolution from Measurement and Automation Explorer, but when I record avis using LabView, they have a resolution of 720 x 480 even though the images being written to the avi are 1280 x 960. I have had this same problem trying to make new videos from the original in which I extract a part of the image and write it to a new avi file... even though the extracted image is something like 620 x 300, when I play the avi (or get avi info), it says the avi has resolution of 720 x 480. I've tried creating an IMAQ, then using the set image size sub-VI to set the image to the size I want and the image shows up with the right resolution but the resulting avi has the wrong resolution, so my sub-videos are distorted. Is there some way to set the resolution of the avi other than by writing an image of that resolution? I'm using the compression filter DV Video Encoder... would that make any difference?
    Thanks!
    Kelly

    Hey Kelly,
As far as the different codecs that are available, it all depends on what type of filter you want to use. They vary so widely that it is hard to say that one is better than another. Also, it depends on what type of compression that you want to use will also determine which codec you will want. Some use lossy compression and some use lossless compression. With lossy, you will lose some data when it compresses, but lossless will not. Lossless on the other hand will produce large data files, as it can only compress a certain amount without losing data.
One thing that you might want to consider is using some of the Vision functions to track changes in pixel values from one image to the next. There are a lot of different processing that you can do on your images before you store them to file by using the NI Vision functions. Other than that, you might have to just play around with the different codecs to find which one will work best for you.
Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thanks, and have a great day.
    Regards,
    DJ L.

  • Import DV AVI Files with 5.1 Audio

To my surprise, Encore would not import DV AVI files from Premiere with 5.1 Audio. I much prefer to do my transcoding in Encore rather than in Premiere so I don't have to guess how much disk space will remain after menus and other content. Also, I think Encore transcoding is more efficient than Premiere.
Yet, cheaper and less sophisticated applications such as Nerovision will import DV AVI files with 5.1 audio, and give you 5.1 DVD's.
Which leads to another question, why does a cheaper application just give you the Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, while a fee has to be paid to Surcode to get it in the Adobe applications?

You cannot create a 5.1 Dolby Digital file in Encore, so the answer is an emphatic "YES" to the planning & budgeting.
You really should be doing this anyway, as it is a real eye opener. There are some superb Excel spreadsheet bit budgeting tools, as well as a simple enough manual method. It should be detailed in the FAQ.
As far as DTS goes, you'll need an encoder again. The only plugin version I am aware of is for Steinberg's Nuendo & Cubase systems, but both DTS and SurCode make them.
The SurCode DTS-DVD encoder is dated now - 5 years or so - and the Nuendo one sounds better. Having said that, the DTS-PSE sounds even better, as well as having DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 capability (both of which are DVD Legal).
Even better are the soon-to-be-released DTS-HD SAS & MAS encoders.
These are primarily for the Blue-ish type discs, but also cater for so-called "legacy" encoding as well, and the detail is even better than the DTS-PSE version. You can hear the difference in the detail where the top end sounds more natural & open. Whatever version you get will make Dobly Dirgital sound dull & muddy by comparison.
Quality can be improved by feeding the encoder with 24 bit audio too - this also applies to Dolby Digital.
Bitrates for DTS are either 754 kb/sec or 1509 kb/sec, and come in 2 flavours:
Compact (.cpt) and Padded (.dts) - either can use the lower bitrate, and there is no difference in audio quality between the CPT and DTS flavours. I recommend using the higher bitrate personally.
Both types are supported in Passthrough mode in Encore - that is to say they import, and multiplex correctly but cannot be previewed.
    Hope this helps.

  • AVI file information

    Hello,
Im looking for a way to read some general information from an AVI file. The most important thing is to get the compressor/decompressor which means I want to know which video codec used used.
    Is it possible with JAVA?
    Thanks for answering!
    with kind regards,
    Robert

Should be able to tell the codec with the Java Media Framework [http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/download.html]
But since it's hard to find actual javadocs for it. I would install it, and then go ask your specific question in the Java Media Framework forums [http://forums.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=28&start=0]
Also now that you know which API you should be using, search for the answer before you proceed to ask another question. It probably has already been asked and answered somewhere.
