Another avi Q!!!

Hi
I've been through the forums and links and still come up confused
I'm trying to open avi files. Here's what I have
Quicktime 7.1.1
VLC 0.8.5
DivX Converter 1.1.1
DivX Doctor2 2.2
DivX Player 1.0.3
Real player 10.1.0(412)
WMP 9
How do I stop Quicktime trying automatically to open the avi as I download it and have another application do the job properly? When you download a WMF the WMP automatically opens it etc etc. I've been through all the application preferences to no avail!
Thanks for your patience!

I want to download the file and open with an application that works . Do I have to download with Safari and watch Quicktime try to open (saving the file to say-Desktop).
I'd use any work flow that worked. Certainly you can try it that way. You could also try using Firefox's "Save as" option to try and "snag" the file as one of the HTML page assets. If your "application that works" has the ability to download/save directly using the URL, then the best approach might be to simply use Safari (or another browser) to learn the URL of the movie and "copy/paste" it to the media player and let it open the file itself.

  • Another .avi file question

    Hi there,
I opened a quicktime movie in Mpeg Streamclip and exported to avi file.
I then burned it off onto iDVD for a customer. However, she could not open it as an .avi file from her PC (to put into power point) is there any way I can burn off a DVD in iDVD that allows another to extract the .avi file as an .avi file?
    Thanks for any help!

.. thanks, what do you mean by PC compatible disc? ...
typical Mac-user question.. ;)) a Mac 'eats' all formats, a PC not.
depending on how or with what your burning a dataDisk, you are allowed to select a disk's 'format' ... if you're using the Finder (insert dvd-r, drag content on it, burn..) it will care to choose a format, a PC is able to read it ...

  • Yet another .avi import thread...

I've been doing this for years, on all kinds of software, and I'm stumped.
Old .avi files - GSpot says they are RAW l420 and no codec is required. PE9 will not import them.
One is small, about a 10 minute clip, and I opened in in QT, File>Save, and PE9 imports it just fine when it's an .mov. The other is 2 hours, QT will only load the audio, and exports same, which PE9 accepts, but does me no good.
So, after converting to .avi, .mov, and .wmv, I still can't get the 2 hour video to import. I've used QT, Nero, VLC, Movie Maker to try to make it save as something PE9 likes, but I can't find it. The closest I came was getting a VLC export out which VLC played as video only, and Nero played as audio only.
Any ideas? Re-capping the original is not an option, this VHS tape walked years ago.
    Thanks,
    Jim

SUPER finished, making a 26 GB .avi into a 110 MB .avi. Video is just black and audio is silent, but it does open and play...2 hours of black silence.

  • Another AVI Newbie Post (reposted from another thread)

Hi, this post answered a big question that I had...couple things I ran into when I tried to export to AVI.
Summary: Client wants to publish the screencaps as standalone vids in addition to the work that we're doing to sync the screencaps with video and ppt files.  When I try and publish to AVI Captivate usually freezes up a short way into the publish and stops working.  I've tried using several deifferent codecs in teh dropdown and they all are spotty.
Possible issues (to help diagnose my issue).
        * I'm new to captivate and doing something stupid since I'm a newbie
        * I'm waiting till the trial ends to actually purchase...so I am trying to do this using a trial version...a legit trial mind you...downloaded from Adobe...not a torrent site
        * I'm on an AMD machine.  Can this software really not run on an AMD machine?  Do I need an intel processor?  I'm coming from a Mac and not sure how this could be possible...but anything's possible!
        * I'm bringing in projects from Captivate 3.  I'm also having the issues with Captivate 4 files, but thought I'd bring this up.
        * I'm using Vista
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I was having the same problem until I let it sit for a while and noticed that it froze for about a minute, but then continued processing!  So, it may not actually be frozen, it is just very slow and the encoding buffer fills up and needs to catch up or something like that.  You may want to set it to start before you go to bed for the night and it might be done by next weekend...
However, I discovered other issues that made the .AVI exporting functionality almost completely useless:
    1) Output codecs stink.  One of them wouldn't even work, it just said "An Error Has Occurred!" and closed.  The others suffered from issue #2
    2) Large file sizes.  Using the "Cinepak Codec by Radius" yielded a 4 slide, 40 second video (with no audio for it) with a file size of over 35 MB!  So I tried using Xvid, which is generally considered to be a "good" video codec, yet somehow ended up with a 1.4 GB (yes, gigabyte) file!  That is absolutely incredible!!  I haven't even bothered trying to play it for fear that my system will run out of memory.  (Using the Microsoft Video 1 codec yielded a slightly better result of 19 MB for the same video).
    3) It always uses the C: drive for "working" swap or w/e.  My video was actually much larger than 4 slides, but I cut out 36 slides in order to try and get a complete video after a few unsuccessful tries where it filled my C: drive.  The first time I just let it run my C: drive quickly ran out of room!  It filled 7 GB and wasn't even halfway done!  So I made sure to change all my working and output directories to the D: drive (which has tons more space), but it still used the C: drive for working swap data, filling my drive again! (This happened with most of the codecs I tried.)  The only positive thing I have to say is that once I hit "Cancel" it removed all of this data and freed up the space.
Anyways, I am giving up on publishing any movies as an .AVI through Captivate 4.  The functionality appears to be almost completely broken.
For what it's worth, I am using Intel hardware running XP Pro.
    And as always, YMMV.

  • Yet another AVI question

......but this one is a bit different...My avi files play just fine....
Im running OS9 on a G3 MT with QT 5pro and DIVX 5. About a week ago i did some HD cleaning (always trouble) and i dont know what i did, but now, mpg files, and the like, autoplay, run, and close completely nomal, but when i open an avi file, it comes up as "untitled", it will not autoplay, and when closed, it asks me if i want to save changes that i never made....again, only with avi files....
    basicly driving me nuts...
I did not mess with QT prefs or extentions, cleaning only what i felt was old, harmless stuff...QT player prefs are set to "autoplay movies automaticly when opened"
I am a longtime, intellegent mac user but this really has me stumped...
any ideas are appreciated, and upgrading is not an option..
    thanks

  • Another AVI Question - Casio Exilim Ex-S600 - Divx

Folks thanks for taking the time to help me out here. I am a brand new apple user, I just got my MacBook about a week ago.
My camera is a Casio Exilim Ex-S600 and in some reading it appears to take videos in DIVX MPEG4 based on a few quick searches.
I have read a little about installing the DIVX codec and little about the VLC player. I am trying to get some recommendations here. My goal would be to edit these files in iMOVIE and play them in QT. What is the native format for iMovie. The idea of having to get a windows machine to convert these is disturbing.
Am I making this more difficult then it actually is?

Are you recommending I install DIVX?
That or possibly the free Perian codec package. Wouldn't hurt for conversion by applications which rely on installed QT components but it won't help as far as iMovie '08 is concerned since neither the encode nor decode component will be avaiable from within iMovie '08. (I.e., it can be used for conversions by iMovie '06, QT Pro, GarageBand, or even MPEG Streamclip but you will still have to convert externally to iMovie '08 before importing.)
What about a app that would simply convert the files on a Mac.
I tend to use MPEG Streamclip for most conversions which relies on the QT "structure" embedded in the Mac OS since v7 was released (as well as whatever QT components you have installed to include WMV and DivX). You could also try FFmpegX or Visual Hub which I believe rely on on their own decoders but I'm not sure whether or not they handle all proprietary DivX formats.

  • How to play AVI movies with Qtime?

I have some .avi movies and was prompted(by QTime) to go to 3rd party download site to find an "add on" for adapting it to work. Non avi players / codecs / anything on the website. Please suggest alternatives. thx.

AVI files play perfectly using QuickTime Player on all three of my Macs. Either you didn't install Perian correctly, or you have some faulty QuickTime software, or you have one particular AVI file that is corrupt. Try another AVI file. What is the message you get from QuickTime when you use QT to open the file?
Also, my VLC (you have written VLI, but surely you have VLC???) plays AVI files perfectly... well, as perfectly as VLC can.

  • Getting a large avi off the photo app

I made a video on my camera, uploaded it to the ipad (avi format). It plays well! Now I want the file back to edit on my Windows XP machine and I can't get it off. I can get all other imported photos, and even another avi that is smaller, but not this one! Ideas?

The method you suggest is how I have been doing it, everything copies over easily except the two large files.
I wonder if there is a fix for that coming? I want the files, but it looks as if I can't delete them either, I can't move them in anyway, or open them in anything but the photo app.

  • New issue with blank frame at end of coverted .avi

Here is the project (scenario details):
I have 2 .swf files. Both are 30 fps. Call them "chapter1" and "chapter2". Frame count is 3600 and 9600 respectfully. The last frame of "chapter1" contains the same image as the first frame of "chapter2" - basically I'm splitting up an overall animation so I can easier manage two Flash documents versus one large document. I used SoThink SWF Converter to create 2 .avi files. When I place these .avi files back to back on the same timeline in Encore, both .avi files have an extra blank frame at the end. This causes a black frame flicker between the end of "chapter1" and the beginning of "chapter2". Even if I drag the end of the .avi on the timeline to the left (as to trim the video track), I still see a black, empty frame at the end. I don't think the problem is with SoThink because I've even imported these .avi files into Sony Vegas and zoomed in all the way to the end of each video track and the very last frame of both files is as it should be. This leads me to believe the issue is with Encore somewhere. Also, initially the problem in Encore was the audio tracks were extending a few frames beyond the video track thus causing the back to back .avi files to align according to the audio track (which was leaving a few blank frames from the video track). I have included some screen shots of the last 3 frames of "chapter1" and the first frame of "chapter2". Hopefully the images below appear in progression as I attached them. Watch the timeline indicator. One frame before the end of "chapter1" is black. I've run out of troubleshooting ideas. I can't imagine this would have anything to do with the .swf being 30 fps and the Encore timeline being DV NTSC 29.97 fps.

Stan - thanks for the reply...
I don't recall what was covered when you posted the similar question earlier:
Not much more than me explaining the flicker between 2 .avi files, and the only response was someone telling me to just have one .swf file. I'm not sure why some people's response is to "just do it a different way" instead of trying to figure out what is causing the issue.
What does mediainfo or gspot show about the avis?
I'm not sure which information you need, but I will attach what I was able to get out of the problematic .avi. Let me know if you need different information. This was the first time I used MediaInfo.
Without knowing what to look for, I did notice a couple of lines that caught my eye. Line 25 mentions 30 fps frame rate (which I imagine is this .avi). Line 26 mentions 25 fps as the original fps (which makes me wonder if SoThink misread the .swf file as 25 fps instead of 30 fps) - not sure if I'm reading this right. Also, lines 45 & 52 mention a 26ms delay in audio (relative to video). Could that be why the audio track in Encore extends a couple of frames beyond the video track? Either way, Vegas is STILL showing the last frame as filled with the image. What does this report tell you? Maybe I should find a different way to export .swf to video. Is there anything else out there I might try (to see if the problem is SoThink)? Just looked at the .avi in PremierePro. The last frame looks fine. SoThink won't let me convert .avi to 29.97 fps.
Could the fact I have a 30 fps .avi placed into a 29.97 fps project timeline, could this be the issue? I tested another .avi (from a movie), and the last frame appears correctly in Encore. Now this looks as if the issue is back to SoThink's conversion to 30 fps. I really should find a different .swf to video converter and retest. Again, thanks for any help (from anyone) in this and suggesting alternative video converters.
*added - the .swf files contain tweened and frame by frame animation along with a streamed audio layer, but even when I completely remove the audio layer, the resulting .avi still shows up as a blank frame at the end. I thought at one point the fact I had a streaming layer of audio might have been forcing the frames in Flash to skip around, but this wasn't the case.

  • No audio on .avi file after using Aut

    Friends,
Here is story.. I have a movie downloaded from net (I am not RIPPING DVD) in .avi format. but when I tried to play this file on ZVM I was facing problems of no audio(but junk chatter) and slow playing (though the movie plays nicely on Windows Media player or any other player)
I tried to reconvert this .avi file to another .avi file thru AutoGK, but the output of whole process is not having any sound (yeah the movie is playing on ZVM with correct speed but without audio).
In AutoGK--- advance options I used Mp3-VBR-28Kb
    ps.
. ? and codec used was Xvid..
    any idea what went wrong.
    Thanks in advance for help.

hmm, well, it all depends on codecs, and of course I would expect it to play fine on the pc
porting it over to a portable media player might insert issues

  • FCP and AVI DV Type 1

    Hi all
I was just wondering whether or not AVI files of the type 'DV Type 1' are able to come seamlessly into FCP 5.1.2? Or will it be necessary to render the files out in order to edit them?

I tried Canopus and upon starting to open the file I received a "The source file cannot be converted by this application.".   I also tried another .avi type 2 file that  was less than 2GB in size.   Guessing it is some incompatibility or codec issue.   If anyone has any suggestions here, let me know.
I found the Ulead type to type 2 converter.  Sure enough it mangled the audio towards the end as had been reported in a post.
DVDate appears to have done the trick.  I emailed the author to verify it just re-wraps.   If anyone has any experience with DVDate let me know.
By the way, is there a way to tell if a .avi file has been re-enoded from another by using Gspot or another utility?
Here are some notes from another post and a link to DVDate.  I don't think the last comment is correct re: DVDate an audio though.

Might be good if you can post the code instead of screenshots.
-If session was closed or aborted due to some reason you should get this error.
-Multiple times you are creating the session inside the loop with same avi session, is it required?
-Are the images added to the avi file?

  • Implementing an Effect that looks ahead in the source

    Hello all,
I need to create an application which reads from one AVI file, processes each frame with a special effect, and outputs the result to another AVI of the same format. Fairly standard stuff.
I am fairly new to JMF but I think I have the basic methodology right: creating a Processor, and then during the Configured state, adding a new Effect to the Codec chain of the Processors first TrackControl.
The thing I am unsure about is this: the Effect I am programming needs to 'look ahead' in the source i.e. it needs to see frames 1, 2 and 3 before it can write frame 1 of the output.
Does the process(Buffer input, Buffer output) method of Effect is called for each frame of the video, providing a Buffer for each frame at a time? In this case can I buffer the first three frames for myself, and withhold output until the third frame?
Or is process(Buffer input, Buffer output) called once by the Processor, with the in/out buffers represent the entire stream and able to be read and written to 'asynchronously'? In this case, when I use javax.util.BufferToImage to get my actual frames to apply the effect, do successive calls step through the frames, how do I reference specific frames from this context?
I'll stop speculating now - I hope someone can nudge me in the right direction... Thanks very much for any advice.

    Hello Darkmoon_UK,
Your problem seems similar to my one.
I want to implement a slow motion effect with jmf. I also read from an avi file.
First thing I hava to ask is, whether your effect simply plays the original video into the new file, if you only add
    output.copy(input);
    into process()-method.
I dont't know if it is important, but I add the new Effect to the codec chain AFTER ConfiguredCompleteEvent, not during Configured state. And this works (at least simply playing the video works, not my slow motion effect ;-) ).
Next thing is you should insert some System.out.println()s into your process()-method code to discover that it is called several times (for each frame of the video).
I think it is possible to buffer all the frames into an collection out of java.util.* and make a specific variable (int frameCounter) count the frames by calling frameCounter++; at the end of the process()-method. Same effect is using input.getSequenceNumber(), I think. With the help of a Collection of java.util (ArrayList or something else), it should be possible to access any frame out of the video.
Well, I'm also still learning and trying to force JMF to do what I want, not the other way round, as it is at the moment. I hope this little bit of information I gave you could help you solve your problem or at least nudge you in the right direction.
    Bye,

  • I can't add mp4s to iTunes

Earlier this week, I converted a file the other day using Jodix iPod Converter and it worked fine. Later that same week I downloaded a video off video.google.com in mp4 format but it would not add to iTunes. Today I proceeded to convert another .avi video using the same converter, but it would not add to iTunes. I've tried dragging&dropping, File---->Add File To Library and have tried opening it with iTunes. None of which works.

  • Also can't play movies in iPhoto

I'm using iPhoto 9.1.5 & have Quicktime Player 10, & still on Snow leopard.  When the movie was downloaded from my camera it showed message - "unreadable file, file could not be imported.  The file is in an unrecognised format".  Should I be able to view this & is so what do I need - another version of Quicktime maybe?  It was just a movie clip from an ordinary digital camera.
    Thanks for any help.
    Janet

It was just a movie clip from an ordinary digital camera.
Problem is: there's no such thing. Movie formats can carry movies created with any of hundreds of Codecs - so one .avi is not the same as another .avi.
    Have you installed Perian?
This adds extra codecs to QuickTime which will allow it to work with most avis. If the material is HAD and shot as AVCHD then you'll need to use iMovie for that.
