Another Black Screen on Capture issue!
Hi, Note with interest I am not the only one to be confronted with this issue. I have a Sony HDR HC7 HD (HDV) camera and on intial set up of my installation - used this camera and through Easy Set up chose the Apple codec 1080i50 for PAL video capture and every thing was hunky dorey.. Indeed great stuff.. Subsequently I needed to video edit some SD video taken by another Sony camera DCR PC330 PAL and reset the Easy set up to accept SD video. It worked -and is still working. The problem I now have is try as I might - by going back to Easy Set up and reconfiguring to the original settings for the HD camera I am confronted by a black screen on capture. Everything else seems to be fine.. the camera whirrs and starts up but there ain't no flaming picture!! Help!

Some recent computers (>2011) allow to set up the boot either in UEFI mode or in Legacy (not-EFI) mode. The way to carry out this setting depends on the computers, but generally this setting is located in the "Boot order" tab of the BIOS (to access the BIOS screens, it is generally necessary to press a key during the PC startup).
Note: Some BIOSes (e.g. American Megatrends' "Aptio", found on the Asus vivobook series) call Legacy mode "Compatibility Support Module" or simply "CSM".
So if that applies to your machine, you might be able to boot Windows7 with UEFI mode and Arch+Nvidia with Legacy BIOS mode, without changing anything to the installation (the BIOS boot loader seems to be compatible wih GPT partition table, but there is to configure something for it to work see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GPT#BIOS_systems).
If you can't do that and you really do not want to use the nouveau driver, you have no other choice than to wait for Nvidia to release an UEFI compatible driver, and not to work in tty console mode.
You can also try to search how some has succeeded to use the efifb frame buffer with the nvidia driver, with special configurations.
But, apart from the BIOS switch between boot loaders, the two easiest approaches for you are either to use the nouveau driver or to not work in tty console mode when using the nvidia driver.
Maybe you could find something better but it will be more complicated, I don't know if you have time and motivation to go this way...
Nvidia will surely release a UEFI compatible driver sooner or later...

I thought before maybe its Bluetooth related as sometimes when screen would turn black and then come back, I would get a 'Bluetooth Device Not Discoverable'. So turned off Bluetooth in the BIOS, but still having display/sleep issues.
I removed hte Lenovo Power Manager/PM Driver, and turned off sleeping in the Windows power settings (in every setting including if Low Battery Action). Any ideas?
I just upgraded to a 3 year warranty (the more expensive one), should i just ask to replace mobo/cpu/memory again or will Lenovo actually test it for other issues?

Go to Solution.Well my issue wasn't an external monitor... it would goto sleep by itself when Im trying to write code/programming... then randomly wake and go back to sleep up constantly ruining workflow (or wait a few hours Im sleeping at odd times in the morning lol). or the monitor would turn black suddenly. I think I tested via external monitor but didn't matter what result was, the random sleeping issues indicated a larger issue.
It was a crimped connector the 1st time it went back to Lenovo. the past 4/5 times its gone back i think they are stumped. For me, Im honestly not sure... it might be the OS is on a mSATA instead of the regular hard drive and Windows doesnt know how to handle that hardware.
Their newer W540 manual seems to indicate do an OS on mSATA at your expense.
Do you have an mSATA OS? Anyway, thats a very small chance. not sure. -
Yet another black screen on TTY with nvidia drivers
Hi everyone,
I've just changed my hardware and immediately installed a fresh Arch on it. Everything was fine until I installed the nvidia drivers: from that moment, once the boot is complete I get a normal (and working) GDM login screen, but I cannot switch to TTY with Ctrl+Alt+Fn. If I do, the screen goes black, but even worse, the monitor goes into sleep mode and I cannot get back to X (with Ctrl+Alt+F1).
The machine is still working correctly though, as I can get access to it via SSH. The only problem is that I cannot use the virtual consoles unless I want to lose all X display until the next reboot (restarting it via systemctl restart gdm doesn't work).
I also tried lightdm as a replacement but it's still the same.
However, when using the nouveau driver, everything works as expected and I can switch from one TTY to another as much as I want. Of course, I'd like to keep the nvidia driver for various reasons.
I found a lot of similar issues on the web and on this forum but none had this "additional little annoying thing" which is the sleep mode that can't be reverted but with a reboot.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ive had my imac since its release in 2009, its the 3.06 ghz pre I series processors, never had a problem, had a clean system and it was always perfect, and the HDD and RAM were at the best standards (speed and large capacity- working for 2 years). So the problem is that all of a sudden my screen goes black, rebooting didnt help, i bought a monitor adapter and after a couple hours the computer worked until i tried to connect to the internet, my wifi would work (ps4 and iphone) but on my imac the wifi signal icon was empty, so then i turned it off and now its black again and nothing works.
What could this be?
How much will the repair be?

Another Black Screen problem ����
Hi guys,
I got an iPhone 4 like 2 months ago, which was working fine until a few days ago. What happened is, I texted to a friend with WhatsApp then left iPhone for a couple of minutes and the screen never came back. At first I think the handset wasn't working cause i was not reachable when i called myself, then I restarted it, without seeing anything just used my imagination :) but I am not really sure about it, I might also have a coverage problem.
Now I can see the icons barely with the right light angle, handset is fully operational as I understand. I can make and receive calls. I have reinstalled the iOS in iTunes, which was another headache, but I'd didn't help. Another interesting thing is it just doesn't hard reset itself. I have tried to do it several times, pushed the buttons until I see the apple logo but it just started with everything in place.
I also tried to increase and decrease the backlight thing in the settings, of course it didn't help.
Now I am going to Spill the beans out: I dropped the iPhone like a week before all this happened. But it worked completely fine until a few days ago!!!
Since there is no Apple Store in my country and I don't have AppleCare :( what do you suggest me to do?
Thank you very much in advanceIf it goes out a fourth time, I would recommend calling and asking for Customer Relations and ask them to replace the iBook instead of doing another repair. It has been known to happen.
Meanwhile, you can minimize the chance of the logic board failing again by never picking it up by the left front corner alone. If you are picking it up with your left hand only (as I often do), be sure to pick it up in the center, under the track pad. The case flexing on the left side from picking it up by the left front corner can cause the graphics chip to come unsoldered from the logic board. This is what causes the familiar logic board failure.

Random black screen freezes - GPU or PSU issue?

For the past three weeks, this setup has been very stable. I then went on vacation for 3 days and then came back. All of a sudden, I then started getting random black screens (which occured in the middle two consecutive LOL matches, I'm quite sure I'm in the tribunal now...). If I'm in the middle of a game, the sound will stutter, and the game/system might appear that it's still playing for a few more seconds even though I can't see anything. I either have to manually reboot, or it'll just restart itself. I don't notice any error message when my system restarts. I tried doing a 3DMARK run to stress-test it, and it black-screened during Fire Strike. Sometimes I'll get a black screen at the Windows desktop doing nothing in particular to stress the card; I even got one in my BIOS setup screen!
This morning, I did a fresh boot and ran GPU-Z. The VDDC graph doesn't look quite right to me, given all the hiccups. Oh, and 5 minutes after that screenshot, another black screen.
The reason I mention the PSU is 1) I noticed that that particular PSU is rated 40A on the 12V rail, and yet the GPU requires at least 42A. but there are two 12V rails on that PSU, for 80A, which should be more than sufficient, and 2) I didn't notice any artifacts prior to any black screen. It's just weird that these would happening out of the blue - it sounds like the kind of issue that would've been present on day 1.
Any thoughts?I have the same issues.

Mid-2010 macbook pro has started having "black screens"
apple store diagnosed as "software failure". they wiped it clean & gave me instructions to reinstall/restore from backup at home. successfully reinstalled but another black screen after about an hour.
i am NOT a computer person so i need kindergarten language/instructions/suggestions (fitting, as i was a kinder teacher). i am a 6 hour roundtrip to the apple store, living in a rural town after 35+ years of living in an area of 6 million with MANY apple stores close by.
has this happened to anyone else & if so, can you tell me how you corrected it? again, VERY elementary language please!

p.s. i have since upgraded to OS X 10.9.2 & while it's listed that i have vmware fusion (i do), i don't use it...You may have the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try. There's a very specific test Apple has for this called the VST, which should detect the problem. I don't think all the Genius Bar folks are aware of this issue, so it's best to ask for it specifically. Take along a copy of your kernel panic report if you're getting one.

What you can do to use it is download gfxstatus from http://gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That will lessen the panics at the expense of graphics speed.
You may be eligible for a depot repair, which is a flat rate of about $310. Ask at the Genius Bar. -
Creative Cloud is Black Screen
I just installed creative cloud on my new laptop. Windows 8,1 All I get is a black screen. The blue circle loads for a second but then it's just black see screen shot
I have CC on another pc on same network with no issues I know it's not a firewall issue.

adobe cleaner tool
deleting oobe file/ folder in both the app data folder and the common files folder
rename oobe file/ folderI had the same problem. HP Zbook 14 with fresh Windows 8.1 Update 1. This laptop has a switchable/hybrid graphics card with Intel HD 4400 and AMD Fire Pro M4100 chipsets. Tried latest drivers from HP as well as from Intel and AMD without sucess. The problem seems to be related to the switching/power management features. As a workaround, setting "Creative Cloud.exe" and "Adobe CEF Helper.exe" to use "Power Saving" graphics settings in the AMD CCC made the application work (no black/black window).
A post in another forum suggested using the modified drivers "Leshcat Catalyst UnifL" from leshcatlabs.net - Keeping it Simple. Ads free. After installing these drivers (Leshcat’s Catalyst 14.12 Omega UnifL) all Adobe applications are working flawlessly!
(Note: Delete any switchable graphics application settings and go with the defaults).
So to summarize this seems like a driver problem rather that an Adobe issue. Before updating I had problems with hardware accelerated gui in Spotify as well (also black screen). This issue was also solved with Leshcat -

I am having a serious issue with my machines ability to use boot camp. Here's what happend: I had Win 7 installed on the BOOTCAMP partition for a long while, then one day my HD crashed. So naturally I got my HD replaced from Apple and got Lion reinstalled and wokring flawlessly. Then I planned to get my Boot Camp going again, but my computer has a will against it I swear. So I run Boot Camp Assistant , create the parition and reboot. At this point I have my Win 7 disk burned using Disk utility in the drive, I am using a dvd disk image from Microsofts online store. I reboot and the computer hangs at the "pick a harddrive" grey for a second. Then the DVD drive spins up and I get a black screen, then for ever so slight a moment there is a flash of a white _ a the top left, then flash , nothing, the screen remains illumniated. Now I tried this multiple times , let it run over night , and nothing. Its almost as if my laptop will no longer boot the style of dvd that win 7 is.
Being a diagnostics first type of a person I tested all the variables, the win 7 cd works fine in other macbook pros. My computer boots other mac os x DVDs without a problem. I also tried using winclone to create a copy of another machines Boot Camp and flash it to my BOOT CAMP drive but this has the exact same result! Therefore it seems that the underlying system that runs my Macs ability to boot from Windows-style? partitions and dvd is broken. I also tried installing rEFIt, but that doesn't seem to help. I also tried booting off of an external USB drive with the same result. I tried zapping p-ram , scm and doing all software updates.
Has anyone expereinced anything like this? Anyone found resolution to a similar issue? Any other tricks related to Macs EFI and boot process that I could use to debug this? Anywhere that EFI stores logs possibly?
I went to the Apple's Genius Bar and they were stumped on my issue. I felt that they should be able to fix it considering it booted fine before I had Apple replace my HD.
Thanks to any responders, I'm really hitting my head on the table now and would love some help.Have you reset the PRAM? It should usually be done when replacing any hardware. Have you got the latest EFI firmware for your Mac?
Not knowing what model /YEAR your MBP is (not that it would help me too much but the other fellas probably would) it's hard to guess as there are issue's for different models. The only thing I could find was it's usually caused by a non-conforming video driver. Microsoft had a page on it I found by accident and now I can't find it!
WinClone hasn't been updated by the original author in over a year, others have tweeked it a little to work with W7 but seems to be semi reliable, so the be aware.
Unless the other MBP's are identical in Model AND year your putting older or incompatible drivers on your MBP. Boot Camp, (especially if your using the drivers on the original install disks, like 10.6 and earlier) will only install for that specific computer. Just like the OS installer.

When booting my computer in UEFI mode, occasionally, my monitor does not wake from sleep and the screen remains black until Windows takes over and the login screen displays. This seems to usually occur after the computer has been powered off for more than 10 minutes. Sometimes this never happens, the screen remains black the whole time, and I need to hard reset. Sometimes it boots fine.
This black screen / no signal issue also occurs far more frequently when attempting to resume from sleep. I strike a key on the keyboard or hit the power button while the computer is in sleep mode, the computer wakes up, but the monitor never turns on. This forces me to either hard shutdown or reset in order to restore graphics.
In addition, I have a Razer keyboard that shuts off its backlight when the display is turned off, and it remains off when this problem occurs. This likely means that there is a problem with the card, drivers, or something else, rather than cabling. I might just RMA if we don't get anywhere here.
Perhaps a good first step would be ensuring that my card is flashed with the latest vBIOS. Can you send a link to that?
I'm also wondering if ULPS might be interfering, even though I am not in a CrossFireX setup.
Other than this MAJOR issue, the card works fine when playing 3D games. Though, I had major issues with video artifacts when playing 2D games or doing anything else simple (web browsing, moving windows) because of the absolutely terrible decision to underclock the past couple generations of AMD cards so much that the GPU can't function. I solved this by modifying an OverDrive profile to raise the idle clock to 850 MHz, but not overclocking at all.

Meta discussion for the mods (feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss this further, in order to keep the discussion here on topic): sorry for not immediately opening up another forum topic when commenting on this issue. Every single other community that I've been a part of prefers to keep users with the same problem on the same thread. In my experience, mods yell at people for opening up duplicate bug reports and duplicate issues far more than they ask people to fragment information across multiple threads, therefore making it difficult to consolidate information.It could be a mobo issue, but all of the quirks seem to point to the card.
I do not recall if I tested the card in another PC, but I no longer have a second desktop to test with.
I do think I tested an NVIDIA card on a separate Windows install with this build though. No issues there if my memory serves correctly. I've been troubleshooting this issue for months, and I'm becoming tired of this stubborn problem, so the attempts at problem-solving are becoming blurred.

Lion 10.7.1 black screen in standby or sleep mode
After upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion OS i often had a black screen appear (several times a day) and it is very uncomfortable ... keyboard is no function at all, start button is useless (unless press and hold to forced restart).
When i closed the lid the sleep mode (led) is diming, and you still can hear the harddisk is running ...
I need to know if it is the OS problem or the hardware issued (after perform the harddisk check all is okay).
We need to know the solution asap.It gets worse I hear, that Mountain Lion is coming soon. Since Lion, my whole experience has been more of sending crash reports than anything else. I wish Apple would have given me a helmet to go with my MBP.
I have reinstalled with SL a bunch of times, but all my periphials no longer support Snow Leopard, so I reluctantly upgrade again to Lion, and blamo, its a bunch of Black Screen of Death issues again.
Trying to dual boot or use another OS in the meanwhile is a battle, since ejecting an ISO from most other OS's is near impossible, or the ones that do eject, have issues with NVIDIA or something else proprietary too.
I think all in all I have to lick my wounds, and go back to Snow Leopard to get things done, and plan on buying another machine to run FreeBSD on to continue getting things done in real time. iPads are cool. But it appears the usefulness of a MacBook Pro have came and went with Lion. And from what I see of Mountain Lion, a new MBP is nothing but a very expensive iPad. Its sad, I have to resort to using my ladies old Vista machine a lot to get much done. I used to sneer at those machines. But now the tables have turned.
I try to use Virtual Box with FreeBSD, but I can not get far with all the underlying OS X crashing all the time. I have found a neat little Linux that runs "Live" called Porteus. No matter how 'dead' your MBP is, with Porteus you can still get a lot done if need be.
So its Snow Leopard, and $10,000 worth of equipment on the side that will not run on it. Or Lion, and send Crash Reports? What to do? -
Windows 8 black screen after Dell logo?
My computer was being really slow the past couple of days so i did a system scan with reg cure pro and it told me i had to restart my laptop. After restarting my laptop it showed
the dell logo and then just a black screen. Every time i restart my laptop it does the same logo then black screen. When i click the power button it turns of instantly instead of the usual 3 or so seconds of holding the button. I have looked up this issue
but have not found a fix.I cannot/do not know how to restore windows 8 because ,y laptop came without the installation disk and when i try to access the advanced settings it is still just another black screen with the words "f12 boot
options" in the bottom right corner. I have also seen people talking about 2 different styles of this black screen. One with a black screen but a light border and the second just a black screen. The one mine seems to be is that there is a bright border

Black screen after they replaced my logic board twice
I have been getting black screens on my mac book about a month or so after i bought it i take it in all the time they say we ran tests nothing is wrong with it then i get it home and i get another black screen finally after a couple months the first time they replaced my logic board / graphics card. It continued to happen so i took it back in they ran tests said they could find nothing wrong i showed them a video of my macbook pro black screening they said they would check the memory they did and said it was loose so they replaced my logic board AGAIN now on the second day of getting my macbook pro back it has black screened AGAIN this was in windows boot camp but when it happens on that side it always happens on the mac side can anyone give me any advice / suggestions on what to do about this please?

It continued to happen so i took it back in they ran tests said they could find nothing wrong i showed them a video of my macbook pro black screening they said they would check the memory they did and said it was loose so they replaced my logic board AGAIN now on the second day of getting my macbook pro back it has black screened AGAIN this was in windows boot camp but when it happens on that side it always happens on the mac side can anyone give me any advice / suggestions on what to do about this please?

I have hp dv 6 series model 6092ex
My laptop is showing black screen when i start no log but f12 orange light and caps lock light is also working fine and it looks window also runing fine but there is a black screen i checked lot of discussions but i hard reset bios reset methods like turn of laptop remove AC press power key to 30 seconds and windows and B key press method also but it did not work for me can any one please help me how to solve this issue in my laptop model please it becomes headache for me.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums and welcome. I am glad to see you have tried some things to fix your black screen on boot issue.
One of the things I notice that you stated is that you did the hold the power button down for 20 seconds.
By any chance did you do the full hard reset. If not here are the full steps.
1) Remove the power cord and battery.
2) Hold the power button down ( Go for at least 30 Seconds to a minute)
3) Replace battery and power cord.
4) Hold the power button down again for 30 seconds to a minute.
20 seconds is not long enough.
You may need to do this in a couple times.
I am not stating it will work but that is how you should do those steps.

Logic works fine until recording then goes crazy
Logic works fine until recording then goes crazy. As if someone is pressing down on the keypad space bar & down keys. The mouse becomes very hard to control. (jumping about) I have to quit Logic to get rid of it. Any ideas what I can do ?
