Another bug - CS4 to CS5 Layer Drag

I've repeated this on two different MacPro/Intel computers running Leopard 10.5.8.
We prefer to use ContactSheet II in order to make contact sheets for import into InDesign and then printing through ColorBurst RIP. As mentioned in another thread, the best workaround offered was to run CS5 in 64-bit and run CS4 when needing 32-bit-compatible functionality such as this.
We also use ContactSheet II to make contact sheets for printing CD case inserts, and this is how I discovered this particular anomaly.
I have my layered master TIF file open in CS5 which is where I want to place my contact sheet and then print. The file is 5.4 x 4.65" @ 300ppi, 8bits/channel.
I've just made a contact sheet in CS4 at 5 x 3.5" and the result is @ 300ppi, 8bits/channel.
There are two ways to quickly move this into my CS5 file:
Command-click on the image and drag into my CS5 image window - or - select all in CS4 and paste in CS5.
After doing this, the new layer (regardless of the method of moving it into CS5) is minute in size, actually 1.2 x 0.84" @300ppi.
The workaround was to save the contact sheet from CS4 and then open that file in CS5 and the size is not affected.
Again, this was repeated on another computer, but I have no clue as to why this is happening but it appears to be a bug. I'm aware I can just do the whole operation in CS4 from start to finish.
Any thoughts on this?

Thanks Jeff - ya,sorry, I should've specified. I'm running Win 7 64-bit and I have Production Premium CS4 on the system now. Ideally I would deactivate and uninstall it before I load CS5.5 Production Premium.
My only reasoning is to save on SSD space. Is there any reason to keep CS4 on the machine, other than possible problems with CS5.5?
Thanks again for your reply Jeff.

  • CS5 - Layer links get lost when copying/duplicating to another psd-file

    Hello,
Following problem when using Photoshop Extended CS5 12.0.4 on OSX 10.6 described as example situation:
    1) You have a psd file with several layers and/or groups.
    2) Let's say 1 layer (N1) is linked to another layer(N2)  in that file and a further layer (N3) is again linked to another layer (L4). That makes 2 linked layers sets. (N1 and N2;  N3 and N4)
    3) When copying those linked layers to another existing file (either by using drag and drop, but also if using the duplicate layer/group menu option), all linked layers get linked together as one link, meaning that your previous SETS of linked layers are gone. (all 4 layers are linked together now as one instead of 2 separate sets of 2 interlinked layers.
Note: The only way to partially fix it was to duplicate the group  into a new file (using duplicate layer group from menu option as new  file), but i require it to be working for copying content from one  existing file to another existing file, hence this method is not  satisfactory.
    4) Does anyone know how this can be fixed, it looks like a PS bug to me?
    Any suggestions appreciated, many thanks.
    Best regards
    Manuel

Hi Dave, thanks for your swift reply.
The sample i have posted is just to explain the priniciple. Usually we work on very complex images with loads of groups and linked content.
Therefore drag each set of links is not really an option in this case, as it would cost quite a bit of time.
Our workaround trick at the moment is to mark the linked layers in colours in the layer palette and relink them after they have been duplicated but again this is not ideal. Thank you for your response, much appreciated.

No I don't want to use channels. I want to use a 'Solid Fill Colour' layer. If you click on the little icon at the bottom of the layers palette you get a little menu and at the top of that menu you can select 'Solid Colour'. Then you can select the 'Colour Libraries' tab and apply a Pantone Colour as a Solid Fill layer.
Photoshop definitely DOES support this method because we have been using it here for the last few years, its quite standard practice to work like this before going into channel work or DCS work.
It means you can double click a layer to reveal its intended Pantone colour rather than cmyk match.
As I say it works fine in CS2.
Well it seems its another bug in a very poor update. I just hope CS4 doesn't have the same problems.

Without knowing exactly what the bug is in the Akvis code, I don't know.
But some third party plugins always need an update when new versions of Photoshop are released (especially those that try to modify Photoshop's UI).
We work hard to maintain plugin API compatibility, and most plugins work just fine in new versions, but there are always some problems to work out in third party plugin code.
(Macintosh plugins are going through a lot of problems in CS5 because we had to change the UI toolkit used, and many assumptions made by plugin UI code no longer hold)

Another Bug in CS3 or a setting Im missing?
    This time in Photoshop.
If I add a solid colour fill layer and pick a Pantone colour from the Colour Libraries I fill it with a Pantone colour and then save the document. When I re-open the document the Pantone Fill layer reverts back to a CMYK setting when I double click on the layer.
I ran a test on CS2 and this definitely doesnt happen in CS2 so why in CS3?
Its a massive problem and in my eyes makes Photoshop CS3 unusable in a professional environment.
Please tell me its a new setting i'm missing and not a bug.

  • Another Bug in Hasbro SCRABBLE

For the sake of the uninitiated, prior to game end, SCRABBLE informs the user that the computer has only x tiles left, when x is left than 7. This is because all of the tiles have been taken from the bag so neither player can replenish their rack.
At the end of the game, the sum of the value of the loser's unplayed tiles is added to the winner's score.
The bug is that SCRABBLE repeatedly announces that the computer has x tiles left, and then the user goes out, and then SCRABBLE awards the user y extra points, where y is less than x.
This is impossible. But it happens repeatedly so should be easy to track and fix.

  • Another bug - field positioning

Another problem I have noticed is that sometimes the position
of the field or label on the layout is not what the properties.top
says. I had a field that was in one place on the layout and in
another place altogether when it was printed. Once I corrected the
Top property, it printed in the same place as it was on the layout.
ie the printing used the Top property, the layout used something
else to decide where it was located.

  • How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

    Andy,
In the simple and short form, what happens with the ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) module is that it gets updated with regularity, to accommodate the camera mfgr's. changes for their newer models. That ACR works within the host program, such as Ps, PsElements, Lightroom, etc.. At a point, Adobe ceases to support older host program versions. When that happens, the user has a few options:
    Upgrade the host program version
Use another host program, such as PsElements or Lightroom
Use the free DNG converter, per Curt's suggestion. That is not host program dependent
Glad that the DNG Converter works for you.
    Good luck,

  • Printing proofs w/ Pantone in CS4 vs CS5

    Good days all,
I have found that our proof out came out with different.
The file was created in Illustrator CS4 and proceeded in CS5.
    The file includes;
    1. One PSD link file includes two pantone in channels
    2. Blur effect for the drop shadow
    3. general designed layout
EPS file was created base on above condition and sent to our RIP (ORIS) / Printed in Epson7900.
We have tried with embedded images and linked images but same printout.
Then we notify that the color proofs printed with somewhat different different pantone value.
the pantone color that originally created in PSD file has one pantone that not flat color but screened effect + another pantone with 100%.
We tried with opening Original CS4 file to create EPS file for printout and they are printing different pantone value.
Same pantone but different print out result.
My question is is there different pantone engine in CS4 vs CS5 when they print transparence + overprint effect?
what should be resolved to have the CS5 to become more like CS4 EPS output?
I hope I make myself clear on this.
    Is anybody has similar problem?

We are not aware of any invalid PostScript being generated by InDesign 8 (CS6). However, from release to release of Adobe software, we definitely make changes in the generated PostScript (and similarly exported PDF and EPS) to account for new or updated features and to fix anomalies in previous releases.
It is possible that the Xerox FreeFlow VI Design Pro software is modifying the PostScript generated by InDesign (perhaps to merge variable data in some way?) and is doing so based upon pattern matching that works with the PostScript generated by InDesign 6 (CS4) but not with InDesign 8, yielding modified PostScript which is then rejected by whatever PostScript interpreter is ultimately processing that modified PostScript.
Your “mailing programmer” might want to contact Xerox to ascertain whether they may have an update to their software.

  • Having the same text resize bugs in Fireworks CS5

Yes, that's right, the same terrible resizing bugs, that I have complained about directly to Adobe MULTIPLE times have not been fixed.
Now we are told there is no patch coming to windows for CS4. Problem still happening. And its not just me.
So now I downloaded CS5 and HAD THE SAME ISSUES!
    Seriously Adobe, sort yourselves out.
At my blog here, you can see it well documented. Literally the same issue I have occasionally with CS4. UNBELIEVABLY.
    http://allaboutchris.co.uk/blog/2010/bugs-in-fireworks-cs5/
Adobe, when is it getting fixed?

I don't have any problem resizing the text with the Scale tool as long as I hold down the Control or shift key while pulling at a corner with the double arrow cursor. If you pull vertically or horizontally you get just the kind of distortion I'd expect. That's not a bug.

Yes it did.  You just don't remember having to deal with it.
Photoshop does not ever install in the same folder as a prior version.  Thus CS5 will not see the plug-ins that have been installed in or under the Adobe Photoshop CS4\plug-ins folder.
Thus you will need to install your plug-ins again, pointing them at the CS5 area.  Some (as mentioned above) may need to be upgraded.

  • Export to EPS on Macbook Pro i7, CS4 and CS5, ULTRA SLOW

Just curious if anyone has run into extremely sluggish behavior when running either CS4 or CS5 on a brand new i7 Macbook Pro.
I have a brand new, 2.66 i7 Macbook Pro with 4 gigs of RAM and CS4 installed.  I had a 100 percent vector Illustrator file that was only 1.5 MB in size. I added a clipping mask and then "saved as" an EPS.  I then received a progress bar that stated "Writing Illustrator EPS Format".  It's been 20 minutes and the bar hasn't even reached a 1/4 completion. I then tried this same task on a different Macbook Pro i7, also brand new, also 2.66 i7, but with CS5 and 8 gigs of RAM.  It wasn't any faster.  Both machines are sitting with the bar barely moving.  I estimate this task would take 2-3 hours to export which is totally unacceptable.
This problem is not unique to this file.  Every time I have tried to save as an Illustrator EPS file, the machine becomes so slow it is essentially unusable.
How can the same thing be wrong on two brand new machines, with two different versions of Illustrator?
Does anyone know what is wrong?

Illustrator cannot export to EPS. You can only save your file as EPS. The difference is not insignificant. To export a file one is generally leaving the current file open and creating a new file that is somehow less than the complete file. Illustrator files exported to TIFF, PSD, or JPEG are less than the full Illustrator file because they are no longer vectors and are far less editable than the full Illustrator file.
An Illustrator EPS file is the data in your file saved in three formats: A fully editable Illustrator file, a PostScript file giving output instructions to a printer, and a low resolution preview for viewing when imported into other programs. While the Illustrator file may be only 1.5 MB, the instructions to produce the PostScript code for the printer might be complex due to blends, gradients or gradient meshes, pattern swatches, symbols, placed raster art, or effects. If the file is physically large, then the lo-resolution preview can get massive as well. A 6 foot by 10 foot banner will need a preview that’s 44 MB, and that’s not even required for printing. It is qute possible for an Illustrator file that physically large to be only 1.5 MB.
EPS is a dying format. There is probably no reason for you to be saving your file as EPS. If you only need to use it in Illustrator then save as .AI with PDF compatibility turned off (this option appears after you slick Save). If you need to use the Illustrator file in another program, the save as .AI with PDF compatibility turned on.
Can you tell us why you are saving as EPS?

  • PPro CS4 and CS5 installed and Windows 7 default launch from project dbl-click is...CS4?

This is sort of a curious one.  I have to keep CS4 installed to edit Camtasia files as their codec is a 32 bit no-go with 64 bit CS5...
Oddly, when I double-click any PPro project (most were created in CS5), they will launch CS4, not CS5.  When i go into properties and attempt to link a different application as the default for this project type, I browse to PPro CS5's executable and choose it, but end up back in the "Open with" dialog which again, only shows PPro CS4 as an option.
Oddness...  anybody else seeing this?  I just launch CS5 from it's shortcut and it loads whatever I want without an issue, but I still double click without thinking 3-5 times a week and have to back out...It's an annoyance.

    Tim,
Are you comfortable wading around in the Windows registry? If so, you can probably fix this with a quick digit change:
In the Registry Editor (launch regedit from the Run dialog), find the following key: Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Adobe.Premiere.Pro.Project\shell\open\command.
Once you select the "command" key, you'll see the program destination string on the right side; likely it's pointing to CS4. Double-click the "(Default)" string and change the value to to following, exactly as pasted here:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS5\Adobe Premiere Pro.exe" "%1"
That's with the outside quotes and everything. OK the change, and you may or may not need a system restart, but that should correct the issue. Basically the file extension (in this case, .PRPROJ) is associated with a class (Adobe.Premiere.Pro.Project), and that class points to default application. Once that's fixed up, the chain should be put back together.
Also, there is another key in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Adobe.Premiere.Pro.Project\shell\open\command. Changing the above should change this as well, but you may want to check it.

  • CS3 script runs slow with CS4 and CS5

I have written a table transformation script for InDesign CS3, which formats an imported Excel table.
With InDesign CS3 the script runs well. Now I tried the same script with InDesign CS4 and CS5 and it runs very slow. It's about 10 times slower than with CS3.
I tried to turn off redrawing, but this didn't help. It even got slower again!
Does someone has made similar experiences? Could you solve the performance issue?
Do scripts in CS4/CS5 generally run slower than in CS3?
Does CS4 differ so much to CS3 that the script runs 10 times slower?
What can I do to improve the execution performance?
Thanks for any tips / advices etc.

I now have made some tests with profile / timing. Here are the results.
you find the code snipped below. It iterates first over all rows and then over all cells inside of the row. In the cell iteration, the function hasGapInLineBelow(...) does more iterations.
The example is with a table of 42 rows and 9 cells.
    I have compared CS3 and CS5
    there are 3 test cases:
for 1/1 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 1 (statements for first row and first cell done)
for 1/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 1 and second for loop is in iteration 9 (statements for first row and all 9 cells of the row done)
for 2/9 means: first for-loop is in iteration 2 and second for loop is in iteration 2 (statements for second row and all 9 cells of the row done)
it's strange that normal variable assignments take lot of time (like the statement startPos = indexLeftNeightbourOfCurrentCell;) -> I don't understand why this can be so time consuming!?!
it's also strange why in "for 1/9" and "for 2/9" variable assignments take much longer than in "for 1/1"...
could I use another data type than array for the variable isMergedRow? Which one?
do you know any performance optimizations?
in which time unit ExtendScript Toolkit shows the measured periods?
how are the times calculated in loops? Are these the times sumed up over all iterations or is it just the time for a single statement?
