Another capture issue

So I had a Macbook and ran FCP on it. It worked like a charm.
But, silly me, I decided I wanted to "upgrade."
So, I bought a Macbook Pro and went with FCP 2.
Now I can't capture any footage without getting dropped frames. I'm capturing directly to my laptop, just as I always have, using the same Panasonic DVX100 and the same firewire cable that I've always used.
My MBP is 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory.
What is the deal here? Why would I have ZERO problems with a regular Macbook and TONS of problems with a speedy Macbook Pro and the new FCP 2? This is ridiculous.

The better question may be what you do about it.
eSATA using an ExpressCard/34 adapter or FW800 external drive attached to a
ExpressCard/34 FW adapter.
Two buses, solid external drive and you are good to go.

Hi - I have Adobe Premiere setup to show me the video while it's capturing it form my camcorder, but for some reason it only shows the first frame at that's it.  it does capture it correctly.  What could be the issue?
    Thanks,

Hmm.  I've not yet seen this issue under these conditions.  The Scenalyzer suggestion may be worth investigation.  WinDV is another capture utility, not quite as feature rich as Scenalyzer, but it is free.

  • HV20/FCP6/FW Problems/Capture Issues/WTH?!?!?!?!?!

Hello everyone. I have a Canon HV20 that was working fine for a day or two while I was capturing both HDV and DV footage from MIni DV tapes. I opened the log and capture window after changing tapes and BAM! it said it couldn't find the deck.
At first, I set the app up just like the Apple site said, and everything worked perfectly, even when dumping DV footage. Cameras setting never changed from factory default. Now this, and what's worse is that my computer won't recognize the FW device. I do have a G-tech plugged in as well, and with no HV20 the computer recognizes it in the FW800 port, but as soon as I plug in the HV20 the computer doesn't recognize anything though the drive still operates.
    I get this from FCP:
"Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device."
I get this from System Profiler:
    "FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec"
If your advice is to purchase a new 17" MBP, I just might since i have had it with this POS right now.

Assuming the your FCP6 setup has not changed:
Canon cameras do not play well with other devices (hard drive for example) on the same FW bus. My son had capture issues with a Canon HV30 and G-Raid 2 on a 2007 Quad Mac Pro.
    The work-around:
Capture to an internal drive and move the media to the external, switch scratch disk, and reconnect media. (not ideal).
    The "fix":
Purchase a FW card for the MBP Express card slot and connect one of the FW devices to it. (Each device on different FW Buses.

  • Macam or Parian cause capture issues???

Hello all - I've been having capture issues with my HDV stuff (Crashes during capture - I posted the details under 'Crash under HDV log and Capture' if anyone can help me out with that issue and this is slightly related...
People elsewhere say that Macam or Parian can affect Final Cut - any experiences with that? any other programs that I should avoid that could negatively affect my fcp performance?
    Thanks!
    - John

I'm using FCP7 on Snow Leopard.
Any idea as to what could cause fcp to crash during capture (HDV to ProRes) if it's worked more then a dozen times prior??? Any other programs could affect such things? Nothing has been installed or changed on my system in over a month.

  • GS500 Capturing Issue

Today I was capturing a tape shot on a VX2100 with my GS500. A bit into the capture I got a message from FCP stating:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
Whenever I try to capture now I get that message about 5 seconds into the capture. I have tried capturing 3 other tapes that were shot purely on the GS500 and I get the same message every time I get a few seconds into the capture. However, I can view tapes fine through the GS500 fine in VCR mode. I have also tried 3 different firewire ports. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'd try another capture device; your GS500 may need servicing.

  • 24p advanced capture issue

    hi, folks...
posing an old question that was never completely resolved because i've bumped up against it again.
here's the situation: i've shot and edited hours of footage at 24p advanced on a canon xl2. captured using 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown removal without problems-- edited nicely into sequence.
but somewhere along the line something happened. now when i capture 24p footage and edit into the timeline i get motion blur every fourth frame (the pulldown frame?) the only way i can get a clean clip is if i capture 23.98 footage using the DV NTSC (30 fps) setting rather than 2:3:3:2 pulldown, then use the "advanced pulldown removal" feature from the tool bar after the fact (thanks patrick for this work-around).
so... situation is i can deal with this funky capture issue but it's an extra step and a pain in the rear-- anyone have any theories on how this happened and/or a permanent fix so i can shoot and capture the way fcp is supposed to work?
btw: checked the camera set-up again -- still 24p advanced, triple checked my fcp capture and sequence settings-- it's all at 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal and 23.98 as it should be. clip analysis on captured clips shows frame rate coming in at 23.98... as it should. couldn't find anything on topic in the search. appreciate thoughts. thanks much.

have you changed or downloaded anything at all that
might force the change in procedure, like a quicktime
update perchance, ipod update maybe???? just fishing
    for a clue......
thanks, zeb... but no. i do remember the day things went haywire-- i captured footage off one of the reels and noticed two of five clips had captured at 29.97 instead of 23.98. it was puzzling but i went back through capture presets, sequence, etc and remember double checking and resetting all the pertinent settings before going back and recapturing the footage that had come in a 29.97. it then captured at 23.98-- but the every-fourth-frame motion blur issue cropped up at that point. and it's been happening ever since.
i know the fcp settings are correct -- i just don't get it.
fyi... i notice that as footage plays out through the firewire from the xl2, it looks fine in the camera viewfinder but i can see the motion issues on the log and capture window as it plays-- this is obvious even before initiating capture.

  • So many capturing issues...Can anyone help?

    Hello fellow editors,
Over the past 2 weeks I have been struggling to fix my capturing issue. I have read the forums and have tried everything people have said about revlevant issues. So I ask for some help please.
I am editing on FCP 5 I use a Duel 2.0 G5 2.0 GB ram, I use 2 internal drives and 2 Lacies external. My deck is a JVC Mini DV/SVHS combo model number SR-VS30U.
So here are the issues either the deck fails to initilize or FCP sees the deck but the Preview is disabled and not allowing me to capture.
How do I fix this, I have been capturing often but just recently have started seeing all these issues.

So here are the issues either the deck fails to
initilize or FCP sees the deck but the Preview is
disabled and not allowing me to capture.
An obvious question: any adjustments - upgrades to Mac OS X, FCP, QuickTime 7 or alterations in hardware - in your system since your system decided to go AWOL on you?
Also, in terms of FireWire control, (not familiar with the exact model, so sorry if this isn't applicable) do you have device control but just not the ability to preview within the Log & Capture Window?
And do you have the ability to monitor externally? I've found that - in FCP 5 - if the deck is turned off for any reason - I shut it off once when a tape got jammed - the Log & Capture window will not be able to Preview but I was still able to Capture - and Batch Capture, at that - thanks to external monitoring.

  • Another Black Screen on Capture issue!

Hi, Note with interest I am not the only one to be confronted with this issue. I have a Sony HDR HC7 HD (HDV) camera and on intial set up of my installation - used this camera and through Easy Set up chose the Apple codec 1080i50 for PAL video capture and every thing was hunky dorey.. Indeed great stuff.. Subsequently I needed to video edit some SD video taken by another Sony camera DCR PC330 PAL and reset the Easy set up to accept SD video. It worked -and is still working. The problem I now have is try as I might - by going back to Easy Set up and reconfiguring to the original settings for the HD camera I am confronted by a black screen on capture. Everything else seems to be fine.. the camera whirrs and starts up but there ain't no flaming picture!! Help!

    I found that at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI
Set up the BIOS in EFI or Legacy mode
Some recent computers (>2011) allow to set up the boot either in UEFI mode or in Legacy (not-EFI) mode. The way to carry out this setting depends on the computers, but generally this setting is located in the "Boot order" tab of the BIOS (to access the BIOS screens, it is generally necessary to press a key during the PC startup).
Note: Some BIOSes (e.g. American Megatrends' "Aptio", found on the Asus vivobook series) call Legacy mode "Compatibility Support Module" or simply "CSM".
So if that applies to your machine, you might be able to boot Windows7 with UEFI mode and Arch+Nvidia with Legacy BIOS mode, without changing anything to the installation (the BIOS boot loader seems to be compatible wih GPT partition table, but there is to configure something for it to work see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GPT#BIOS_systems).
If you can't do that and you really do not want to use the nouveau driver, you have no other choice than to wait for Nvidia to release an UEFI compatible driver, and not to work in tty console mode.
You can also try to search how some has succeeded to use the efifb frame buffer with the nvidia driver, with special configurations.
But, apart from the BIOS switch between boot loaders,  the two easiest approaches for you are either to use the nouveau driver or to not work in tty console mode when using the nvidia driver.
Maybe you could find something better but it will be more complicated, I don't know if you have time and motivation to go this way...
Nvidia will surely release a UEFI compatible driver sooner or later...
    Regards.

  • DVCPRO capture issues - FCP or tape issue ?

Can anyone help me rule out whether this is a tape issue or a problem with my system ?
Trying to capture from DVC PRO tapes - problem is I don't know if they are DVC PRO 25 , DVC PRO 50, or HD
(we inherited these tapes from another company, who shot them but is not being forthcoming about how they shot...)
I have a Panasonic AJ-SD93 deck hooked up to Final Cut 5.1.4 via 6pin firewire (G5)
I start playing tape with regular DV NTSC settings in Log & Capture, timecode seems to be rolling continuously, the deck display says i is DVC PRO 50 - then I hit Capture Now and I get a freeze frame, and an error message :
Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted.
So is it the tape ?
The weird thing is I was able to capture up to about 10 min of the first tape.
Even when playing back, something changes on the tape at about 10 min - but what ? Timecode is continuous - what coudl change and make it uncapturable ?.

Did you choose the proper Easy Setup? You need to choose the Easy Setup that matches the footage, so FCP knows what sort of signal to expect. If you try capturing DVCPRO 50 as DV/NTSC, then you would get this error.

  • 8330 Video capturing issues

    Hi,
I got a 8330 yesterday and I am having issues recording a video.
After a master reset, the capturing works fine.
As soon as I change the encryption mode under 'options/media card', the phone
does not let me capture videos anymore, even after I changed the options back to default!
Every time I try to record a video, it shows a '0KB' size at the lower left corner.
I've swapped the memory cards and even the phone with no results.
After a master reset, I can record again until I change the media card options...
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    resc wrote:
Can the data on the card be accessed via another BB if the encryption option is turned off?
Nope. You will not be able to access the files from anything other than the BlackBerry used to encrypt the data. This includes your PC, another BlackBerry, or even your BlackBerry if you happen to wipe or upgrade the OS.

  • FEAKISH CAPTURE ISSUE IS PROBABLY AN FCP BUG

Brian Connor, Patrick Sheffield and Studio X may recall a recent issue regarding the odd truncation of clips. Brian's "solution" was to edit the clip in QT, then re-import the file. He wanted to know what would happen when I did this.
I never performed that experiment, because the problem suddenly vanished when I pulled the clip directly from the Browser into the Sequence, bypassing the Viewer. I assumed it was some oddity in the Viewer and finished the job for the client and marked the thread "solved."
Now the same problem has appeared with another clip. the clip is 17:38. At 10:25, the video cuts back to Frame 1 and plays from there. The audio does not change. It's the same problem I had before.
The clip appears normal and complete in QT. As Brian suggested, I copied the clip (Self contained, 3.2 GB) to desktop, then deleted the first 10:25. In QT, the clip appears normal.
HERE'S THE SPOOKY PART: When I open the ORIGINAL clip (different hard drive, different file name) in FCP, the entire first 10:25 is MISSING. There is only the final segment, as I has edited it in QT.
FCP MUST HAVE SOME ISSUE HERE IN ITS INTERNAL FILE MANAGEMENT. No matter what I do, FCP goes back to its original error and replicates it.
Or can anyone figure out this wierdness?
Meanwhile, I'll just keep hammering at it on non-chargeable time...
    g4, dual 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 internal, five firewire

I think I get the "clapper slate" joke. 72 frames? I don't know...
I'm just trying to get this job done.
I found the FCP Rescue page, but the download page doesn't work. Can't find...
But I did find a problem with my internal hard drive. Fixed with Disk Warrior, but in Disk Utility it couldn't unmount..nasty red notice. But now green and fixed, as are all my other drives.
In QT, found the two clips. Pasted one into the other. But when I saved this under another name, QT CHANGED THE SIZE FROM 1920 X 1080 TO 950 X 540. Why does that happen? Now I note that the size change after paste has been consistent behavior. The original clips remain at 1920 x 1080.
    To make it clearer:
ClipA (1920x1080) pasted into ClipB (1920x1080) saves as Clip C (950x540).
When I view Clip C in QT, it looks correct. When I import I it into FCP, the problem comes back: the file reverts to frame 1 at 10:34. But I can look at them side by side, the correct version in QT and the truncated version in FCP, both reading the exact same file.
    Conundrum city.
Needing to deliver product, I dragged this combined file into Toast, set the encoding to auto, and hope that I will get at least a viewable DVD, no titles, credits, dissolves. Let my producer explain our "technical problems."
If I can ever get this job out, I've got a backlog of six reels to capture. How can I stop this from happening again? My immediate plan is to go into all the FCP folders and delete the media from all completed jobs.
Someone did say to avoid using Capture Now. Do you agree with that? I've done a bit of logging, but the process is time-consuming and seems hard on the camera/player, all that stopping, starting and jockeying around. Capture Now is much faster, and the auto-numbering is fine. It's much faster to sort out the clips in the Browser than logging.
But if Capture now is causing these problems, I would invest the time in logging (in just a few long clips) to save the serious malfunctions I am now having.

  • Motion Capture Issue

    Hello,
I'm experiencing an issue with motion capture recording. I'm
recording a desktop application that operates as a side bar. When
menus open and close during playback they leave a black outline on
the screen. this also happens when the mouse moves, so you see a
trail of residue from point to another. I have a feeling this
something to do with the refresh rate on the PC where I'm recording
    but I'm not totally sure.
Has anybody else seen this happen and does anybody know how
    to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
Do you get the same effect when you publish your project as a
SWF? If so then to start with I would select each of the Full
Motion Recording slides in your project and choose Slide > Video
Quality > High Quality. Next publish again and see if that
    improves things.
If not, then carry out the following steps:
    1. Choose Edit > Preferences
    2. From the Recording preferences choose Full Motion
    Recording
    3. Select the 32 Bit video color mode for SWF conversion
    4. Click OK
    5. Capture your FMR footage again.
If this still doesn't make any difference you could also try
Disabling the hardware acceleration. This option can be found in
the FMR section of the Recording Preferences.

  • Capturing Issue: Timecode in DV AVI

I captured a MiniDV-Tape into Premiere Pro CS4. I started working with the DV AVI file. At that moment the Timecode was displayed correctly.
But as soon as I restart the program, the original timecode seems to be lost.
It's set to 00:00:00:00 at the beginning (originally it was something about 09:59:30:18).
The Timecode still exists in the metadata of the avi-files (a demo-version of DVMP Pro 3 gave me proof), but Premiere seems to be unable to recognize it.
It's kind of weird that this problem only appears after restarting the programm.
I need those timecodes now. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?
    thanks
    Enrico
    (please excuse my bad english)

well, perhaps i just got installation issues.
    another question:
if you capture material (from a miniDV tape) and close premiere after the new created avi file has been imported automatically. and if you restart premiere and open the same project. and if you finally double-click that avi file to get it into your source monitor: does it still have the source timecode?
    thanks

  • Adobe Premiere CS5 DV Capturing Issues

Hi! I've really searched the internet to find someone with the problem I have and I unfortunately failed. Please help me if you know anything about solving this issue.
So.. I can capture video when I connect my camera to my iMac (via firewire), but every new clip I capture has a different resolution and often low quality sound. I'm recording in 16bit, while the program sometimes captures in 12 or 8bit. It doesn't make sense. Is iMac from end 2010 too modern to capture DV footy properly? I somehow doubt, but I had to ask anyway. Since I don't have my PC around, I have to wait for weeks to go back home (another city) to capture all the footy in Windows where there is no such problems.
I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance!
    Dino Sertovic

    Hi Dino,
No experience with CS5 or Premiere since OS9 days.
Do you have iMovie to try to import from the camera?
Long shot on the sound, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back
