Another Changing Icon Problem

Following the instructions in Help using OSX I am unable to paste a copied image for use as a folder icon because the Paste option is not available. I have looked for different methods and all stop at this point...... I open Get Info of the folder whose icon is to be changed yet the Paste function is always grayed out. Any suggestions?

Did you click once on the little tiny icon up at the top to select it? When it is selected there will be a very faint (and very hard to see) blue fuzzy line around the icon. You can't paste until it is selected.

  • Another folder icon problem! :(

    sorry about the repetitiveness of the subject but i have actually looked everywhere i could for an answer to my problem and, guess what, no luck!
    obviously its to do with that darn folder with the ! in it...it started a couple of weeks ago when i was jus listening to my ipod (as you do!) and it started skipping songs. suddenly once every 3 seconds it would skip to the next song without playing anything. so i done that reset thing to stop it and when i turned it back on that folder thingy appeared and turned itself off. i went onto the designated address and restored it etc and it worked fine, after i had to put all my songs on it again!
    then about a week later it did the exact same thing but now when i go to restore it the computer wont recognise it and when it does it slows the computer right down. one time i could restore it but it said "firmware error, unable to restore" or summut like that.
    im really missing my tunes and want my ipod back to how it was! any help on the subject about what to do would be of great help
    PS im on an Ipod 20gb photo if thats any difference. and dont point me in the directin of "the 3 r's" i already tried that lol!
    thanks again!!

    Yes. but it won't work.
    It is as if this icon is invisible and non-existent for the computer. It is inactive, because the cursor won't "see" it, the clicks won't "see" it. It is the ghost (as I name it) of the dragging. The dragging was complete, but the icon is left behind, only as an inactive image. For all other purposes it is invisible and inactive. It is just stuck on my screen.

  • Change icon for file type

    how to change icon for all of the tile type? not just one, but all!

    Changing the file icon will not enable Quicktime to play Matroska files. Changing the file suffix might.
    It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
    It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
    But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
    Or this link may be helpful:
    http://www.squidoo.com/mkv-converter-mac
    Recently, a poster (ZachP14) suggested this:
    "There's a program called Plex that runs .mkv files awesome on my 2.0 ghz macbook."

    Maybe worth a try?

  • JTree changing Icons of leaves of a node

    I have a Jtree with root node as "Project"
    I have nodes as "color", "sports", "food" which in turn have leaves.
    I have to set an Icon "Icon1" for all the leaves of node "color"
    I have to set another Icon "Icon2" for all leaves of node "sports"
    and have to set another Icon3" for all the leaves of node "food"
    How do I go about doing it? Thanks.

    Take a look at the Swing Tutorial, specifically http://web2.java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/tree.html#display. This gives a straightforward example of changing icons (or anything on the node) by using a cell renderer.

  • Trouble changing icon in any application, file, etc etc

    I've followed the instructions to change an icon and have done it before with success. But it's not working anymore? Here are the steps i'm doing.... Am I missing something?
    1. right click on icon that i want to use as the "new icon"
    (i believe this is the problem... preview.app is opening the icon. with in get info, the "icon" at the top is just your generic "jpeg" icon. In the "preview" window towards the bottom shows a picture of the icon)
    2. select get info
    3. right click on "icon" at top of preview window
    4. cmd c to copy (also tried copy from file drop down)
    5. repeated step on target app to chang icon
    6. cmnd v to paste (also tried to paste from file drop down)
    doesn't change the icon on the target app or file etc etc....
    signed.... confused?

    OK, try doing both a SMC and PRAM reset and see if either takes care of the problem.
    iMac
    SMC & PRAM Resets
    There are a couple of things you can do before heading off to the Apple store, a SMC and PRAM resets. To do these:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    If it still doesn't work then try restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear out some caches which have become corrupted. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

  • Icon Problem vs Warranty

    The icon problem happened to me and after trying everything I put it in a Apple dealer. Is this type problem included in the Warranty? The product just had 3 weeks and it stoped working properly. The dealer says I have to pay the repair.
    Thank you.

    I've also tried that. The iPod is already in repair and the retailer said I had to pay, I was just seeing if I had the right to argue on this subject. Guess not.
    Thank you for your help. It's a shame that so many people are having these problems and Apple still has no answer.
    Well hope the next one to buy has more luck or chooses another product.
    Thank you once more.

  • Mission impossible:  changing icons in dialogs?

    Hi, Is it really impossible to change icons in dialogs in a straightforward manner? I am new to Java Swing but have used most GUI:s and really never encountered any problems changing icons in the caption part of a window frame (upper left corner). If such common practice is as hard as it seems in Java, it must be considered a major flaw! Please take a look at the problem and enlighten me.
    It is easy to replace the default coffee cup icon in the main application window (a JFrame) with a new icon in file "main.gif",
    Toolkit kit = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
    Image icon = kit.getImage(main.gif");
    setIconImage(icon);
    The following creates a non-modal dialog window (one the user mustn't close before doing something else),
    Dialog status = new JDialog(this,"Status",false);
    The dialog will have the main JFrame as its parent and inherit its icon. Fine, but I want some other icon in this dialog, for example a toolbar icon in file "status16.gif". The only way to do it seems to be to introduce a dummy Jframe like this,
    JFrame frame = new JFrame();
    Image icon = kit.getImage("status16.gif");
    frame.setIconImage(icon);
    Dialog status = new JDialog(frame,"Status",false);
    The dialog now sports the status icon, but there is a dire side-effect of this fix. The main JFrame will no longer be the parent of the dialog (the 'dummy' JFrame will) and this has consequences. For example when the user activates the application main window by clicking on it, the dialog window will no longer automatically place itself on top. A work-around would involve explicitly writing dialog window management code.
    It shouldnt be this complicated to accomplish something as simple as an icons change. I must have missed something important here.
    Best Regards, Ulf Johansson

    DOMO, I too can't get the bug links to work. I suspect many have encountered my "icon in dialog"-problem but given up. It's a frustrating flaw. If nobody comes up with a soulution I'll file a bug report for what it's worth. Sun should take these 'minor' issues seriously. In C# it's a breeze.

  • Since Mavericks Update, changing icons just displays generic thumbnail

    Since I updated to Mavericks, I can't change icons without the icon just changing to a generic PNG or JPEG thumbnail (see attached picture).
    Steps I'm following-
    CMD + I on the icon I want to change.
    Copy picture (PNG or JPEG) to clipboard
    Select icon in upper left-hand corner of info page and choose Paste or hit CMD + V
    Has anyone else experienced this?  Interestingly, any custom icons I created in Mountain Lion continue to work as they did.

    I am also using the latest version of Mavericks and funny thing, I was having this problem today installing a new Time Machine disk and I wanted to change the icon.  No matter what I tried, the icon image would only show (in the get info pane) as a "PNG" or TIFF or what ever format the picture came in.
    I do not know if it was dumb luck but I took the picture (Ironman Teseract) and opened the JPEG in Photoshop CS6.  I then cropped it the way I wanted and saved it to the desktop.  During the save, PS asked me if I wanted to save the embedded color profile or use Photoshops.  I choose Photoshops and saved it.
    I grabbed the icon picture and dragged it onto the picture of the TM drive in it's "get info" pane.  It worked.

  • Preview Pane Icon problem

    Hi guys,
    I have a problem with preview pane icon in win7 ENTERPRIZE. I cannot see any preview pane icon in windows explorer. I have googled for the problem but no luck. In fact, there is no option in view tab or organize menu to activate the feature. So, I assume
    it is not installed or has been deleted for some reasons! I have also checked the Registry to find if there are records of the Icon but no luck there either.
    Any ideas how I can reinstall it, or turn it on?
    Thanks,
    Nav

    Hello Nav,
    What do you mean about preview pane icon?
    Please provide a screenshot for better analyzation.
    Please take a look at the following screenshot about changing icons.

  • Changing Icon Size

    Desktop icons are smaller than I prefer. I am sure that back in Panther I could use a slider to change icon size, change snap to grid options but cannot remember where it was. Does Leopard have user adjustable options for desktop icons?

    Yes it does. You can control click on the Desktop and from the Contextual Menu select "Show View Options." There is a slider for both icon size and, new to Leopard, one for Grid Spacing as well. The option for Snap to Grid is in the "Arrange by" drop down menu. Don't get TOO carried away with the Grid Size slider, or you will start getting the names of things truncated. Another new thing in Leopard is that you can put your items anywhere you want them (with Snap to Grid turned off) and they will stay where you put them, and this includes the drive icons. Love that!

  • Changing Icons (After reading the Mac 101 Topic)

    I'm trying to change icons on my hard drive. The problem lies in the icon in which I am going to replace the default icon with. When I go to the "Get Info" section of the icon, the image in the top left corner is the generic ".gif" file icon or the generic ".tif" file icon, instead of the actual image itself. Therefore, when I copy that file icon, it copies that generic ".gif" file icon onto the hard drive. But when I get info on other default mac icons (such as a folder), I see the folder icon in the top left corner.
    The crux of my question is: how do I have the actual image show up in the top left corner of the "Get Info" section of the icon?
    Thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    You can either create an actual builtin thumbnail for the file, using an Automator action or a third party utility, or simply open the file in Preview and copy it there, then do GetInfo on the drive, select the wee little icon, and paste.

  • CANNOT change Icons in the dock or other places like I used to in 10.5.8

    I found a nice set of icons that I would like to set to my MBP that I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. So far I really haven't had any real problems that I wasn't able to work through except for this one. I've even opened up the "Info" box and changed the sharing and the permissions and changed them so that as an administrator I could change the icon but no luck! On my G5 tower I have no problem at all using the standard procedure but when I apply it to my laptop it just doesn't want to work. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks

    I've been playing around with that problem for a bit now: Apple changed it with Leopard and Snow Leopard and it's not as easy as it was with Tiger... but I found a way around it:
    When you control click on any of your folders (to the right of the System Prefs icon), you need to have the following checked:
    Sort by: Name
    Display as: Folder
    View content as: List
    Having changed icons dozens of times, I found that any other setting will keep your pretty icon within a Finder window, but as soon as move it to the Dock, it'll revert to the stock view.
    So, once you choose above settings, go ahead and change an icon on one of your folders and then drag it into the dock. It should work - mine have been there for 2 weeks now.

    Yes another user with problem with Apple Mobile Device Support, I am getting the error message: Service 'Apple Mobile Device'(Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Vertify that you have sufficient privileges to start system service....I hit retry and it came up again. I hit ignore and it prompted me to hit finish so Itunes can open.   I looked thru alot of these posts on here to try and resolve this problem myself but it's not working too well...I downloaded Itunes to my desktop so I can right click it with the program i downloaded called WinRAR. I extracted it and then went into the folder called Itunes64setup. I saw the file called AppleMobileDeviceSupport64 in there so I began to try and download it on it's own. Well that didn't work as I planned and got this error message:
    Apple Mobile Device Support wasn't installed on your computer. The installer encountered errors before Apple Mobile Device Support could be configured. Your system has not been modified. To retry these operations at a later time,please run the installer again.
    Well I tried to run it again and came up with the same message...I see that some people got great support to help them so I am hoping someone can help me as well. I know "b nor" is very qualfied and hopefully can help me! Please advise what I can do. Thank you
