Another charging question... sleeping/closed powerbook...

so when I connect my larger ipod to the firewire, and close the powerbook, the ipod will continue to charge as long as the pb is plugged in.
is this the same for the shuffle2 w/ usb port, or do I need to leave the pb open and awake to charge?
thanks

The PowerBook needs to be on, not asleep, or it won't charge. At least that's the case for mine. Firewire would have been preferable to me but I guess Apple can't cater to the Mac community any more.<g> I'm thinking I might spring for the wall charger just to save myself the hassle.

  • Another ZM charging question : ZM doesn't stop glowi

    Hi,
sorry for another boring question about charging Zen Micro.
I usually charge my ZM over the AC-plug because the USB-charge is too slow. If I plug the ZM into the charger it starts with this "breathing" glow (you know what I mean ).
Does the micro suppose to stop "breathing" after 3-4 hours of charging ? Because my micro does it but then the led-light doesn*t simply go off... the continue glowing nut with the "normal" glow (not "breathing").
Is it bad for the micro if I let it plugged into the charger over night ans it glows for 7-8 hours (I know that it ist ok for the battery but how is ist for the leds ? ).
    Thanks.
    sorry for my bad english.

"You only need to worry about heat, which would reduce the life of the player. (Or if the glow is keeping you awake...) "
it actually is very bright in the night
"it happened to my micro once, just do what i did. Unplug it(it turns off the light), then plug it back(it turns on ur player automatically), then just turn it off. Never happened to me ever again(hope not jinxing it)"
thanks. i will try it.Message Edited by Baron on 07-7-2005 0:2 PM

  • Question about closed captioning

    Hello all,
I have a quick question about closed captioning. I've output broadcast shows to Mini-DV which has been transferred to BETA SP with no problems. Another station requires the BETA tapes with closed captioning on them. The company doing the captioning has requested that the tapes be originals that have never been dubbed to BETA. Does it make a difference? Or can the same DV tapes I supplied the first station still be used?
    Thanks in advance...

    Thrillcat's got it.
You might want to ask for a captioned DV (more likely DVCam) dub as well, so you can have the CC on any dubs you do. DV and variants store CC in a mysterious place called "VAUX data", and as long as the deck respects it (many mini-DV decks don't) the CC will be passed through FireWire. You can FireWire it back into FCP and it will stay with the program.
If you're doing the above ask if the video itself is a digital DV clone. That may not be the normal case, as standard old-fashioned Line 21 is normally inserted in an analogish way.
Oliver, your posts still don't make it clear if DV is the best format you can output. That should be the major factor in what you give them. If you are equipped to output to BetaSP, DVCPro50, etc. while avoiding a DV compression, your program will thank you.

  • Air doesn't charge while sleeping

i find that with my macbook air, if i leave it plugged in but sleeping (closed) it does not charge as other macs do. does anyone know anything about this? thanks.

As far as I know, it should charge even when on sleep - over even when shut down, in fact.
I would take it back to the store to have it looked at and possibly get it replaced.

You'll certainly need a new logic board.
If I were you, I would take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them evaluate the problems and give you an estimate for repair. If you're out of warranty, be prepared to pay a very high price to get your computer repaired.

  • Another newb question: multiple virtual servers

Hi, I have yet another ignorant question. I have several unrelated web projects that I am working on, and I would like to be able to set up a virtual server for each one for testing purposes, such as: http://project1, http://project2, http://project3. Can someone tell me if this is doable, and if there are any tutorials/resources on this for someone who has 0 experience running a web serer? Sorry for being so ignorant!

    Yes, it is doable.
You can setup virtual server either by IP or by name.
If you have one IP, and want to set them up by name (ex. http://project1, http://project2, http://project3) you can do so easily with this type of configuration:
    <virtual-server>
        <name>mydomain</name>
        <http-listener-name>http-listener-1</http-listener-name>
        <host>*.mydomain.com</host>
        <document-root>/www/domain</document-root>
      </virtual-server>
      <virtual-server>
        <name>myotherdomain</name>
        <http-listener-name>http-listener-1</http-listener-name>
        <host>*.myotherdomain.com</host>
        <document-root>/www/myotherdomain</document-root>
      </virtual-server>
....The important part here is that
    a) all virtual servers share the same HTTP listener
    b) which virtual server serves the request depends on the $HOST request header send by the client. Sun Web Server does the matching for you. It will match $HOST vs. the virtual server's host attribute. Depending on which site you connect to the right virtual server will be used.
    c) if the $HOST request header does not match any of the virtual servers, then the default virtual server defined in the HTTP listener will be used.
To create a virtual server, use the Admin GUI, access the configuration, and then add new virtual server. Or use the following CLI command.
wadm> create-virtual-server --config=myconfig --http-listener-name=http-listener-1 --document-root=/www/docs/myserver.com --host-pattern=myserver.com --log-file=../logs/myserver.com-error_logs myserverHost pattern will be used for matching. Some of this elements might be optional.
Hope that helps. And keep the questions coming :D

  • Another simple questions

    Hello friends:
Another simple question: I need to learn things about Oracle on my desktop.
My machine runs Windows 98. Oracle has some desktop product of its Database Line?

    1. I didn't know the answer to your first question, but I googled it and it says the item is the in-call audio boost.

    2. isn't this setting determined by the carrier? So it's not a setting in the phone, but when you call in to your voicemail you can change your options?

  • Charging question considering specific use schedule

IPad 16 WIFI new no issues.
Got a specific battery charging question. Have read the Apple recommendations and would like to get some expanded information considering the specific way I use my IPad please.
I use my IPad 2 days a week; Wed and Fri. At all other times the IPad is not in use.
So far I've simply left it on the AC adapter when not in use and completely drain and recharge the battery every 30th of the month as directed for Lithium batteries by Apple.
    Question is this;
Considering the specific way I use my IPad, should I leave it hooked up to the AC adapter on the days it's not in use, or would it be better to simply charge it back to 100% say on Wednesday after using it then take it off the AC and store it fully charged until Friday when I use it again?
In other words, which way would be OPTIMUM and cause the IPad less battery stress?
Many thanks for your advice on this.
    Dudley Henriques

completely drain and recharge the battery every 30th of the month as directed for Lithium batteries by Apple.
    That's not "directed".
The only reason it is recommended is so the system knows how much battery is left.
In fact, draining lithium batteries is not a good idea as they are not meant for deep cycling.
And completely draining the battery means simply using it till it shuts down (~15%), not till the charge is zero.
I would not recommend leaving it plugged in all the time.
Just use it and charge it when you need to. About once a month, don't charge it and just use it till it shuts down then do a full charge. Again, this is only so the system knows how much battery is left. It's not for "conditioning" the battery.

  • Another No Charge question

    Hi to all,
I hope that someone will help me with a problem with a Powerbook 5,8 not charging the battery, or so
it appears. I bought a new battery (non genuine) because the old one was 3 years old and was showing 0% and a green adaptor light while the laptop was running. The new battery out of the box showed 0 green led,s and when fitted shows 0% and a constant amber adaptor light after hours of running, (and computer operating ok) Could this problem be the DC in board ?

Yes, you can plug your nano and its USB cable into any powered USB port or Powered hub and your Nano will charge. Just don't let you friend's iTunes interact with you nano.
My best advice for battery testing is don't bother.
    Go to http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
If your nano, when fully charged, lasts significantly less time than the specs say, then your Nano probably needs some serivce. Current nanos should play music for about 24 hours and pics with music for just 5 hrs.

  • Satellite P845t-10G does not go to sleep closing lid after Win 8.1 upgrade

    Hi,
I own a P845t-10g and since I upgraded to Win 8.1 the laptop does not go to sleep (or shut down) when closing the lid.
However, when opening the lid, it wakes from sleep mode.
I tried installing latest Toshiba systems settings utility and all updates on the support site.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Did you check the option called: What closing the lid does?
Click on the 'Power Options' icon in taskbar (or in control panel).
Then click 'More power options'. Now a new windows will open. On the left side panel click on 'What closing the lid does'.
Now you will see two possible mode: battery and plugged in. For each mode you can set the action for closing the lid.
BUT one question: did you upgrade the Win 8.1 following the instruction from Toshiba?
http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-message/ Did you install all the Toshiba Windows 8.1 drivers and utilities in the right order!?

  • How do I migrate from one user to another to resolve sleep/permissions issues?

My MacBook Pro's been having several issues, mainly with waking from sleep. I've tried Repairing Permissions, Repair Disk, running tools like OnyX and Drive Genius, but they can't find any issues. I checked the Console log, and there was some sort of denial from displaying the login window after I woke up from sleep.
Initially I thought this had to do with some of my peripherals being plugged in when I already had the lid closed; the Mac would wake up, not realize the lid was closed, and never go back to sleep. Nothing--keyboard or trackpad touches--would wake the machine up. I'd have to hard reset by holding the Power button on.
I had an Apple Genius suggest that I create a new user and test it out with the (same) default sleep settings as the buggy user account. It wakes up from sleep lightning fast, and has thus far never had any issues.
I'm leaning toward sticking with this new user and migrating over my things bit by bit, to try and avoid potential permissions issues. But since I don't know where the source of this sleep problem lies, how should I go about it?
I've read through Pondini's Transfer Guide here http://pondini.org/OSX/Transfer.html, but I'm just wondering where people would start, knowing that the machine has had permissions issues with some files. (The permissions issues, btw, I believe were caused by a mangled Time Machine restore. I replaced my internal HD with another one, but the Time Machine/Migration Assistant restore wasn't complete. I did it a second time from within the user account that got created, then tried to delete the malformed one and rename the complete one, but that's when the issues started.)

I wasn't intending to move the entire home folder, rather, moving things like what's inside my Documents folder in chunks.
From what I read, tracking down the origin of sleep/wake problems on a computer is notoriously hard, especially if Disk Utility and similar tools don't give any clues during Repair Disk or Repair Permissions. Creating the new user seemed to help, but I don't know why that alone would "fix" anything, so I haven't moved any files as of yet nor done anything with the new user account.
Trying to move the things from my Library folder to my desktop also seems a bit risky; it's hidden in Lion and Mountain Lion because a lot of system files are there, right? Wouldn't moving them cause problems, not just help me find what file/folder (if any) could be the culprit?

  • IPhone / USB devices do not charge when lid closed

I recently noticed an issue with my Macbook Air 13" (late 2010).
Previously, when i plugged in my iPhone when the Air's lid was closed, the phone would charge.
Now recently, when i plug the iPhone in whilst the lid is closed (in sleep mode), the phone does not charge...  what could have caused this, and how do you fix it?

    Thanks for your input vestan,
however it does still seem odd. does anyone have any further explanation on this. something a little less ambiguous perhaps.
i know many people who rave about the ability to charge devices whilst their macbook is "off".  (By off i mean the lid is closed. This is what most people do when they are finished working, so i don't know the right terminology for what power state my Macbook Air is in during this time)
Can someone please clarify how to get this to work. Must be a power setting?
