Another CS6 Hard Drive Thread...

I hate to do this... because it has been covered A LOT, but I wanted to toss out a drive configuration I am thinking about buying.
sata 6gb
1: 180GB SSD (os/apps)
2: 180GB SSD (media/projects)
3: 180GB SSD (page/cache)
4. 180GB SSD (preview/exports)
sata 3gb
5: 1TB - storage
6: 1TB - backup
I have about $850 in this config and just not sure if its a waste? I just want speed, budget is somewhat important, but whatever makes sense. raid, not to raid...?
the rest of the system is maxed, 32gb ram, hot cpu, quadro 6000 etc...
Just haven't built in awhile and the hard drive config has my head spinning... I want to buy tomorrow, so reply away! haha
Scott

Agree, they are small, but here is my reason... This machine will only be used to edit. Typically for a single project at a time. I'm a freelance, one man band ;) and I usually only have one thing going on. So, I thought if I had fast working drives, and then off load those on the TB drive (or externals) when complete, then I have clean "working" drives for the next project.
I shoot single and multicam canon dslr, so the footage isn't crazy big.
But I'm all for building a raid with some raptor or blacks of it makes more sense. Again, just want no bottle neck on drives.

  • How to backup external hard drive to another external hard drive using time machine ?

    Hello,
i have an external hard drive which i store all my drum samples and sound library on and files are contantly changing, adding new sounds, deleting old ones etc ..
So my method of back up as of now is to just copy all the edited files and click and drag to the back up disk.
Now, my question is, how do i back up my external hard drive to another external hard drive using time machine ? I read somewhere that you can do this, i cant find the post however. It would be nice to automate the back up process rather than manually finding the files to copy over.
    Thanks in advance !

The question you pose is conditional, in that you should have more than an exact
capacity replacement for a clone, if the drive you are going from (or one going to)
has insufficient free space and that has a bootable clone on the drive; any space
tied up in a partition for Time Machine backup, takes away from the running space
if you should need to run the computer from a clone on the external HDD's other
partition.... Better to have a good capacity of additional reserve unused free space.
Be sure any clone copy that you hope to use as a re-close, that each in turn is tested
after a clone operation. Also consider using each running system's Disk utility and
have First Aid 'repair disk permissions'. Preparation of a new drive or even an old
drive that may have questionable artifacts or errors on it, should be reformatted. To
even go as far as Secure Erase (overwrite) at least one-pass before reformatting it
    again, could help.
However, I'm not sure if the drives and situation you are looking at would necessarily
be a good match. It could work, but you'd need a reasonable size partition or hard
disk drive for a system. Snow Leopard and all its associated applications, can do
OK in a 100GB HDD. (My computers have more storage capacity than is used; so
for mine to have 60% free space, is good.) Virtual Memory is drive space used by
OS X, that can be a substantial amount for swap and temp files. Some applications
make duplicates of works-in-progress, for each change in an open file; that adds up.
{This question (& my reply) should've been in their own thread & not at the end
    of one that is nearly three months old, + marked 'solved' by the original poster.}
So I guess I don't have a direct answer to your question; having just returned from
a few hundred miles and automobile issues, too. I'm not really thinking on-topic...
The clone should be on its own separate drive, and up to 3TB drive dedicated to
Time Machine may be overkill, however that software will consume old backups first
when it uses up all the space. Or usually that is what happens in TM backups. If
that isn't happening, there may an issue in how Time Machine is set up.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can Time Machine back on one external hard drive (work files) to another external hard drive (back up)?

Can Time Machine on a Mac Book Pro 10.5.8 back up an external hard drive (working files) to another external hard drive (WD dual backup)?

I have Mountain Lion here ready to upgrade, but I'm scared of what will happen - there's always something when you upgrade, but I guess that's for a different post!
Yes, it's a different post, but let's make a comment any way.
Your power pc apps will not work when you upgrade to Mountain Lion. You will have to replace all the apps you use.

You don't need to start up your mac from another computer's hard drive to see it on the desktop of your powerbook.
Startup your iMac in target disk mode and then connect it to your powerbook with a firewire cable and it should mount on the powerbook's desktop.

  • Backup I-Tunes Music to another portable hard drive?

I would like to backup my music to a portable hard drive instead of multiple DVDs within the I-Tunes program. Is there another way to do this?

You can't backup to an externa hard disk in iTunes, but there is nothing to stop you doing it in Windpws Explorer.
Assuming you have a default installation i.e music files in the iTunes Music folder, just close iTunes and copy the iTunes folder to the external disk.
It more convenient to use backsoftware which can backup changes, so after the intial backup, further backs are fast.
There is an article on backup here:

  • HT201250 can i back up my iTunes on one external hard drive to another external hard drive through time machine?

I have my itunes on an external hard drive which I use on my macbook. Can I back these files up through time machine onto a second external hard drive?

For TM yes, for another backup program running on the mac yes. You can avoid the NTFS issue by installing a NTFS driver in your mac: there are two proven ones: Paragon and NTFS-3G. These drivers make it possible for a mac to read and write NTFS formatted drives.
But it will not help TM (I am not 100% sure about that), but other backup apps it will help.

  • My music is not in my iTunes folder and I need to move both to another external hard drive.

    Hello,
I have my music library in a folder on an external hard drive, my movies are in another folder and my iTunes folder is in yet another folder on the same external hard drive.  I am moving everything to another hard drive.  How does one accomplish this in this instance?  I know I can move the iTunes folder but that assumes that all my media is within that folder.  How do I move everything without beguiling iTunes?
I hope this question is clear enough.

  • Using TM to back up an external hard drive to another external hard drive

My question/problem is as follows: I have two external hard drives--one a LaCie 500GB and a new Western Digital 750GB (which I bought because I thought that the LaCie had crashed but, as it turns out it was just the power supply that went out). I have set up Time machine to back up my internal hard drive on my Mac Mini to the Western Digital drive, but I also want to back up the LaCie drive(where I keep my iTunes library) to the Western Digital hard drive. I was recently on the phone with an Apple technical guy who said that it can be done but he told me that he couldn't help me because Apple does not "support" that set up. They only "support" backing up the internal to an external.
Any guidance that someone may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Simon,
Time Machine uses a lot of internal tools within the system files, so it's never a good approach to begin to fool it with duplicates, renamings the exact same names etc such tricks.
Better handle TM the "official" straight way:
Plug both external drives, and tell Time Machine through its normal Preferences, that you are now moving your TM backup routine to the other external drive.
Let it do the first backup then one next, and then only, unplug the first drive so you can send it for repairs.
When you get it back, use TM Preferences again to tell it to backup now back on the first drive again.
That's what I would do personally, or another simple solution:
set Time Machine OFF temporarily while the first drive is being repaired, and use
    SuperDuper!
to make daily clones of your Mac on the temporary second drive.

  • Can I backup my external hard drive on another external hard drive?

    Hello,
I have a 1tb external hard drive where I keep documents and programs but I also keep my time machine back up on there.
I also have a mini 64gb sd card where I keep my iTunes library.
I want to buy a 2tb hard drive so I can have a backup of
    .My built in SSD
.All the data on my 1tb drive
.All the data on my 64gb card.
In essence, I want a back up of my back up (So I have every document in 3 places)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you are using your 1 TB external drive to make Time Machine backups, I do not recommend you to back it up too or it will be a complete mess. Instead, what you can do is to add the 2 TB external drive as another Time Machine backup (you can do it in System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Select Disk).
However, you can make a backup of  your internal hard drive in the 2 TB external drive by following the steps above too, as well as your 64 GB card (you only have to remove it from the "Excluded Items" list).
Another option you have is to use a different backup application to make backups on your 2 TB external drive, so you do not have to do anything with Time Machine. There are apps like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper you can use for this purpose.

  • Another CS6 build questions thread

    Hi guys,
My first post here, I've been reading lots on here today thanks for all the info!, I'm building a new edit of, mainly for pp & ae cs6. I think I'm there with components but would love to hear your opinions and experiences before I click the pay now button in case I've missed something or there's something better about to be released...ideally I'd like to order this in the next couple of days as I have an intense project next week but I could do it on current pc it will just be more painful!
So, I mainly edit using hdv or xdcam ex, lots of video layers & effects especially magic bullet etc...and my current setup doesn't even come close to cutting the proverbial mustard...
Am looking at following bits, but 1 question, a few years ago I had a dual Xeon system with a Canopus dvstorm card on I think premiere pro 1.5, and it was blazing fast lovely real time effects but more noticeable for me was the output render times, I've read a lot over the past three days and it seems that cs6 only uses the processor for output rendering, is this the case? Or am I missing something!?
So (based on videoguys DIY 9 and extensive research online)
Asus p9x79 pro (please advise if the ws is any better? It seems not and I have a pci FireWire card anyway...)
Intel core i7 3930k (c2) (can anyone tell me what the "rev2" difference is?
    Evga classified gtx680 4gb (I read...and read...and read....and read...and decided on this over the quadro 4000 please advise!!!???)
64gb (8x8gb) ripjaws 1600mhz 12800 (I've decided to take a punt on these as I've read on here that Samsung lv (1.3??) is more stable...this is the part I'm least confident on so please please feel free to suggest what memory!?) I've gone 64gb as I understand after effect can use it?
256gb Sandisk extreme sata3 ssd (boot)
2 1tb caviar black (striped) (are the velociraptors worth it!?)
2 2tb caviar green (pre backup "dump" drive & music/sound effects etc
    Fractal designs r4 titanium
I'm hoping that will speed things along a bit?
    My main questions are...
Edit hardware my old Canopus DVD storm, and to a lesser degree my multibridge (now gone) add something, but on this setup there's no 'edit card' if that makes sense? Am I missing something (apart from an I/o device for capture p/tape export ((FireWire??)) any 'high end' work I do is on xdcam so no capture necessary?
Memory...what's the official line? Will the ripjaws work?
Gpu... Are the quadro cards better!? Or do they assume 'professionals' are less likely to over clock there cards and so offer longer warranty ;-)?
    Any other criticisms/ recommendations?
    Thanks

Quick update...Ive just ordered the parts hopefully arrive tomorrow and I can put everything together!
Thanks so much to everyone who contributes on this forum, I havent replied to all, but I have read SO many posts on here this week!
Have I missed anything (Apart from a hardware raid controller and 10 velociraptors!!!)
I may treat myself to a new Keyboard and mouse, I have a R.A.T 9 at the moment which I absolutley love! but get fed up with swapping batteries and so considering getting the "7" either that or the logitech mx revolution... any other recomendations?
Also was about to order one of these...
    http://www.editorskeys.com/video-editing-keyboards/adobe-premiere-dedicated-keyboard.html
And will keep my shuttle xpress wheel which I never use...but am planning on trying out with this new system...
So...pretty much as above I ended up ordering the following
Item: Samsung S24b300hl LED LCD Widescreen 23.6" HDMI Monitor
Qty: 1 Cost: £100.11 (To complement my existing 2)

  • Adding another external hard drive for Masters. A3

My masters are on a 500 GB LaCie "Rugged" which is piggy backed to a 1 TB LaCie used for Time Machine backup. Is it true that one doesn't need to access the masters because most work is done on versions within the library? In which case if the external hard drive is full can I just replace it with another hard drive? Help would be much appreciated. Cheers, jp.

    Every Image has a Master.
    The Master is a file.
The Image is in your Library.
The Library attaches to the Image a pointer to the Master.
The pointer is in your Library.
The Master can be anywhere that Aperture can access.
The Master should be on a drive attached directly to your computer.  (Apple has warned in the past of problems with Masters on NAS.)
When Aperture can access a Master, it is "on-line".
When Aperture can not access a Master, it is"off-line".
(When Aperture can access the volume to which the pointer points, but does not find your Master, it is "missing".)
When an Image's Master is off-line, you cannot add Adjustments or export either the Master or a Version (you can, confusingly, export the Preview).
This is all clever, and very useful in practice.  A rule-of-thumb: if you need to make adjustments to an Image, or export that Image, keep that Image's Master handy.  Conversely, if you are done making adjustments to an Image and do not need to be able to quickly export an Image, you do not need to keep that Image's Master handy.
Theoretically, every Master could be on its own drive.  This is impracticable, but possible.  In your case, with your 500 GB drive full, you should winnow your Masters at some point, but you should also either:
. purchase another 500 GB drive, or
. purchase a 1 TB drive and move all your Masters to it (using Aperture's "File→Relocate Masters" commandwith both drives mounted).
The second is the simpler approach.  All your Masters are on one drive, so:
. you always know where a Master is, and
. backing up your Masters involves less administration than having Masters on multiple drives.
Aperture will take advantage of whatever speed boost you give it, but in general you get much much more bang-for-the-buck speeding up, roughly in this order, throughput from:
    . RAM
    . CPU
    . GPU
    . Aperture LIbrary volume
    . System volume
than you get speeding up the volume on which your Image's Masters are stored.

Laptop hard drives have been standardized in recent years. So they will fit and are electrically compatible.
What's on them is another matter. Windows is configured differently for each computer. So don't expect to boot existing software on another computer.

  • Adding another External Hard Drive

I have a Lacie 2TB external Hard Drive that has my projects on it. I am looking to add another Hard Drive (1TB) To archive my projects which were cut on FCE. My questions are would it be better to get another LACIE Drive to keep it uniform? or does it matter what type of drive it is and I am going to upgrade to the new release of Final Cut Pro would this be an issue if I have to go back to those archived projects?.

LaCie is a name on the outside of the box.
What's inside is what counts. LaCie may use differing drives inside their named enclosures.
As long as the drive has the same specifications or better it will be fine. Everyone has their favorites.
Try a search on this forum for external drives. there's been plenty of talk about preferences.
I am going to upgrade to the new release of Final Cut Pro would this be an >issue if I have to go back to those archived projects?.
If you have the Project files and original media it shouldn't be a problem. The new release is new so having a back up strategy is always wise.
