Another dead 40 G - Is there a solution for this?

Hi,
I'm about to receive my second replacement for the 4th generation 40 G ipod. My first 40 G lasted for more than one year, this second one has only lasted 7 months. I've always treated my ipods better than my own daughter. After the first break, I'm so scared to break it that I only use it at home while reading a book in the coach.
I don't know how long will last this third ipod but I'm sure that it will be the last one. The two years extended warranty that I purchased will expire in few months and Steve Jobs considers that he doesn't have to replace it anymore.
How is it possible that these 4th generation 40 G keep dying and Apple has not yet proposed to replace this defective product by a more "reliable" generation?
Does anybody know how to get another generation/type of ipod that last more than a year?

Your experience isn’t isolated but I don’t think it is the norm, either. If it were, some lawyer would have started a 4G dead iPod class action lawsuit, I’m sure.
Until the Nano, all iPods have been hard drive based and, let’s face it, a hard drive is a sensitive beast. If your iPod is jarred at just the right time (when it is accessing data) the potential for disaster is huge. This winter while I was talking about this with a buddy I suddenly thought about the hundreds of hours my iPod has sat in my car driving on rough roads...I shuddered. And look at how we use them. Mine has spent lots of hours in the cold while walking the dog, shoveling snow, etc - and then brought inside where its warm and humid. It’s sat in my pocket as I’ve ridden my bike getting all hot and sweaty. In short, iPods, even when we are careful to not drop them or knock them around, get treated pretty roughly. The only piece of electronics I know of that gets similar treatment is a cellphone—and mine doesn’t have a hard drive.
And one final thought. We took (an admittedly unscientific) survey in our user group this past winter. Two things struck me and I’d love to see a much larger reliable survey to see if our results were a fluke. First, the large majority reported that their iPod had never died or been sent back to Apple (excluding battery replacement). Second, almost half the people who reported sending their iPod back reported sending back more than one. I don’t mean to suggest that the multiple replacement people are abusing their iPods but I think it is possible that their lifestyle and habits just don’t get along with hard drive based iPods.
This is, I guess, a long winded way of suggesting that you take a look at the Nano.

    Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

That's quite odd Rob8, but we can definitely get to the bottom of this. When did it start? Do you delete heavy and older threads? Please go to Settings>General>About. What is capacity? What's available?

If you are using the iPhone camera zoom then remember that this is a digital zoom not an optical zoom. The zoomed in area will have fewer pixels and not appear as clear. The more you zoom the worse it gets. It's like cropping a picture after it has been taken.

  • I transfered a picture folder to my tc and now it occupies space on the tc but I can't open it. I there a solution for this?

I transfered a picture folder to my Time Capsule (3Gbit) from a external USB, drive thru my Macbook Pro, and now it occupies space on the Time Capsule  but I can't open it. Is there a solution for this?

This is super fun with Yosemite.. that cannot open files on network drives..
Have you got the drive mounted in Finder?
Try and change the permissions of the folder in TC.. but I am not sure you are going to find this easy.
I think the best way to fix this is to copy the whole lot back to the external USB via the terminal using a full root login.
So open terminal.. type sudo su
Type in your main administrator password.
Then you can use any of the command line copy tools.. I have just done this with rsync..
The command is rsync -av /source/* /destination/
You should mount both the source and destination in finder.. and you can then drag the folder into the command line.. it will then copy the exact source and destination you want.

    Hello talaldanaf,
You may need to back up, then restore your iPhone.

If your iPhone continues to restart when you pull down the Notification Center, I would recommend restoring the iPhone as a new device.

Upgrading my work PC is NOT an option, but I'd like my Mac to be able to recognise the attachment for what it is
Let see, you are using a proprietary file format that is only supposed to work with Outlook. It doesn't work for millions of Windows or Mac or Linux email users that depend on other email programs like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, webmail, etc.
Microsoft has had to publish instructions so that their program's users can make themselves compatible with the rest of the world.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290809
You are causing your own problem by not making a simple change in your program's options. Changes in the Outlook preferences can be made either Globally or by the Recipient.
Follow these steps in Outlook 2007 to turn off TNEF:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. Click the Mail Format tab.
    3. In the Compose in this message format box, click Plain Text or HTML, and then click OK.
Don't know of a better way to fix this problem for everyone concerned. Even if you get the fix to work with your machine, you will not enable all of the people receiving your emails to be able to work with you. That's a losing battle that's been caused by Microsoft.
Now if Microsoft created a Mail plugin for other email programs like they do for their video format's and services (flip4mac, Office Live Plugin, etc), then I would consider using their email program to deal with my clients. Until then, I need to be compatible with many different programs in other countries, on different platforms. Maybe that's going to change when they bring out the new Office 2011 with Outlook for the Mac...

since I installed ios 6 on my iPhone 4S Siri has been verrrrrry slow - is there a solution for this?

There is no issue with iOS7.
The issue is with specific iPhones.
I know multiple people with iPhones that have all upgraded to the latest iOS and none of them have experienced issues with the update across multiple models.  Even with the postings here, if you search through them, some go back as far as iOS5 and these Wi-Fi/bluetooth issues occurring which clearly shows it is not the iOS update that is killing the hardware.  The issue is with hardware on specific devices that is boarderline working and an update is causing the hardware to fail.
Apple offers an Out of Warranty replacement for a reasonable cost or the user can choose to replace the device with a different one (newer iPhone or some other device).
Regardless, ranting here is pointless and against the terms of use.

I see my emails come in and then they disappear from my ipad2.  Is there a solution for this?

Do you leave the email client on your computer launched and running actively checking the account for new messages and downloading new messages while the iPad's Mail app is doing the same?
If so stop, and see if there is any difference.
More than likely there will be. Although it is possible to access a POP account with more than one email client, a POP account is designed to be accessed with a single email client only and there are some limitations.
No such problem or limitations with an IMAP account.

I just bought an I pad abd find that it is compatible with Adobe Flash Player which I need to play bridge on BBO.  Is there a solution to this problem?

No Flash for iPads, iPhones, or iPods
Here's why there's is no Flash available for iDevices or other mobile devices. Adobe was unable to provide a product that was suitable to the needs of battery powered mobile devices used for Internet browsing. Existing Flash technology used too much memory, ate battery life, and was buggy. Simply put Flash did not work well on mobile devices.
Apple's Steve Jobs led the escape from Flash dependency when Apple introduced the iPhone, and later introduced the iPad. There was a hue and cry over the omission. Time proved Jobs was right on target.
So this is why there is no Flash for your iPhone or iPad or iPod nor for most SmartPhones. Flash has been abandoned by many sites in favor of supported technologies such as HTML5 or by providing their own custom app.
Here is Steve Jobs official comment on his momentous decision to omit Flash from iDevices: Steve Jobs on Flash.
Here is Adobe's later announcement to cease development of Flash for mobile devices: Adobe on Mobile Flash.
Now, you are not necessarily out on a limb. There are some apps that can display some Flash, but don't count on there ability to display anything using Flash.
Apps that can display some Flash from the Web:
    Puffin
    SkyFire
    Photon Flash
    Browse2Go
    iSwifter
Also, note that many sites that use Flash provide their own app for accessing their material. So check with your favorite sites and find out if "there's an app for that."
