Another Ethernet failure?

Hi everyone
I've read a few posts in this iMac forum about Ethernet problems. I also took to heart the comment by one poster: network problems are solved by 'divide and conquer'.
For a couple of months, I've been cursing our isp here in Portugal for a gradual slowdown in Internet speed. We had engineers in to fix one problem with the line, but my connection remained slow. However, over the past couple of days I've determined that this is actually a problem with my main machine (iMac G4, 1.25GHz).
An iBook connected by cable to my Conceptronic ADSL router runs nice and fast. I record a surprisingly good 3.2 Mbps using www.speakeasy.net/speedtest.
My iMac shows poor modem speeds on the same test: 40-50 kbps. With Appleshare over the Ethernet (100MB) it was going to take 30 hours to copy a 500MB file. This is very slow -- and things used to be better. It looks like there is a problem with my Ethernet hardware or, perhaps, a general speed problem with the iMac.
I've reformated the HD and reinstalled system software (10.3.x and 10.4.x) and the problem remains.
My question is: what is the likelihood that the iMac's networking systems would partially fail in this way? And how can I test for failures of this type? I live in rural Portugal and the thought of finding a good Mac repair shop leaves me cold At very least I'd like to be able to approach a shop well-armed with information. I've used Net Monitor to show that Ethernet activity goes in bursts with longish (a second or so) periods of no data transfer at all.
Has anyone seen anything like this before?
Tks
Steve

OK. I've learnt some more about this problem. It looks like it's something to do with my iMac not playing well with the router (Conceptronic C54APRA). If I place a switching hub between my iMac and the router, voila I'm back up to speed (3000+ Mbps). It's a workaround (especially as my hub is originally from Japan and I need a transformer to run it here in Portugal). But a lot nicer than a new computer
I know very little about the complexities of Ethernet. How can this be? Are there settings I can make in my router or system to get these two to play better? Or should I just give up (and perhaps get an Airport card for the iMac and dispense with all the wires once and for all...
I'd appreciate any hints!
Steve

  • AP1252AG Power Injector - Ethernet Failure Radios still UP

    Hi All,
    please can somebody help?
    I was doing a simple test today with 2 AP's, both AP's are powered by Cisco Power Injectors. I was expecting that my client would simply switch association from one access point to another if I disconnected the ethernet cable of one AP (breaking the network connection). What I noticed was that the Radio's of the AP which has it's ethernet cable unplugged were still authenicating clients. i.e clients were authenticaing with radios of AP which has it ethernet interface down.
    Please can somebody tell me whether there is a command that will cause the radios to shutdown in case of ethernet failure, thus forcing clients to try to find another AP

  • Another update failure and restore

    An observation after another updater failure.
    Do NOT update on a shared USB port. I have a USB dongle to let  several USB devices be on one port. This is not normally not t a problem with syncing, but this will not work with iPad OS update.
    Plug iPad directly into a USB port or it will probably fail. This is probably the same reason you can't plug into a keyboard USB port as not enough power to run the operation.

    Apple recommends the same when syncing as well.

  • H520 ethernet failure

    Hi,
    My H520s recently developed an issue with its ethernet connection. My configuration is that I have a Netgear Gigabit switch between my modem/router and the Lenovo H520s machine. The H520s is running Windows 8.1 (upgraded from Windows 8).
    The problem suddenly appeared that the ethernet connection will connect - then after < 10 seconds it will declare that the network cable is unplugged and reconnect - then last for < 10 seconds again and repeat, so the wired connection is effectively useless.
    I have tried another machine (netbook) using the same ethernet cable and it stays healthy.
    If I tell the network device in the H520s to set its speed to 10 or 100 M, then the H520s maintains its connection - so it is usable if I am willing to accept the downgrade in local traffic speed.
    Has anybody experienced this?
    Does it sound like a simple hardware failure?
    I am a little reluctant to go and update drivers after a fiasco I had last time (the driver I have is provided by Microsoft, dated 10/05/2013). Are the latest drivers trouble free?
    Thanks in advance,
    Keefe

    Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
    I'm not an owner of your model, but the first step I would try in resolving the problem would be to uninstall the ethernet driver, reboot the computer and then install a fresh copy.  It is possible that there is some corruption with the currently installed drivers.
    In the event you feel that your on-board ethernet is failing you can always install a PCI-e ethernet card provided you have an available slot for it and just disable the on-board ethernet controller in the BIOS.

  • How to add another Ethernet support in WINCE 7??

    Hello Friends,
    We are using AM335x BSP with WINCE 7 and on our board, we have two 10/100 Ethernet port as Ethernet Port0 & Ethernet Port1. By default Port0 is working fine. But Port1 is not working. I have done all pin muxing related to Port1.
    Do, I have to do something in .reg file or not??
    If yes, then please tell me what should I have to do???

    Hello Erwin,
    I have observed one thing in our BSP that under Drivers\EMAC\Resource Files, we have three entries as-
    cpgmacKitlMiniport.reg
    cpgmacMiniport.reg
    cpsw3gminiport.reg
    1. First one belongs to Kitl registry settings
    2. Second one, I have no idea
    3. Third one belongs to our MAC registry settings
    and these entries are called by platform.reg files as-
    ; Ethernet (EMAC/RMII/GMII) driver
    #if (defined BSP_ETH_CPSW3G_MAC0 || defined BSP_ETH_CPSW3G_MAC1)
    #include "$(PLAT_DRIVERS_DIR)\EMAC\cpsw3gMiniport.reg"
    #endif ; BSP_ETH_CPSW3G_DRIVER
    #if (defined BSP_ETH_CPGMAC_KITL_DRIVER)
    #include "$(PLAT_DRIVERS_DIR)\EMAC\cpgmacKitlMiniport.reg"
    #endif ; BSP_ETH_CPGMAC_KITL_DRIVER
    #if (defined BSP_ETH_CPGMAC)
    #include "$(PLAT_DRIVERS_DIR)\EMAC\cpgmacMiniport.reg"
    #endif ; BSP_ETH_CPGMAC_DRIVER
    and our platform.bib file are as-
    ; Ethernet Driver
    #if (defined BSP_ETH_CPSW3G_MAC0 || defined BSP_ETH_CPSW3G_MAC1)
    am33x_cpsw3g.dll $(_FLATRELEASEDIR)\am33x_cpsw3g.dll NK SHK
    #endif ; Ethernet
    So, without making any change in the above reg files I can generate the am33x_cpsw3g.dll under debug build but when I flash the image or download the image over Kitl, I cannot see the corresponding .dll in Drivers of System Information Remote Tools.??
    If the corresponding is not loaded (I am asuming) then why my Kitl, ping, telnet, ftp is working for Ethernet Port0????

  • DHCP not issuing IP System Preferences/Ethernet failure

    I have 10.4.6 running a dhcp connection and it stopped recognizing my ethernet connection one day. I have troubleshooted it and zapped pram not been able to get it to recognize when my ethernet is plugged in or system preferences to recognize ethernet as an option, even when I configure it to.
    I see this is pretty common. Does anyone know what to do?
    Thanks
    David

    Since I just got through installing a replacement NIC for a customer, because lightning took out his factory ethernet interface, I thought I might share.
    We knew lightning had struck, because all of the network devices were disabled. On the Mac that got damaged, the ethernet interface failed to appear in the hardware list of the System Profiler.
    If you're not seeing any adaptor, and you're reset the PRAM, then it's possible your adaptor was damaged by external forces. Could even be from a static discharge. In that case; for $5, you can install a new network interface card (NIC). Be sure to read Tim's posts about generic cards that are supported by Apple's standard drivers (don't require a driver).
    Then again, you may have a completely different problem!

    I am trying to hook up a second airport extreme to extend my wireless network.  Can I do this without having a second ethernet connection?

    Yes. Apple's instructions to do this are here:

  • Ethernet failure

    My built-in ethernet recently stopped working. I changed cables, attempted connecting via cables that were working well for other machines, rebooted routers, hubs, my machine etc- even ran disk utility on my machine. No luck. (I can still connect via wireless but cannot get to Appletalk printers/ervers on the local network. That may be resolvable through tweaking settings on the wireless router. However, that's not today's issue). Assuming at this point that the internal Ethernet port had met is death, I then purchased a D-Link ehternet PC card and loaded the software etc. It performs the same as the built in ethernet which is that is self-assigns itself an IP address , but never gets one from the router and does not ever show the router address in the network control panel. Changing IP addresses to manual and filling in the settings gives me a green light on the network status page (this is true for the built-in and the D-Link card), but no actual internet access.
    This leads me to believe there is some system level corruption possibly at work here. If the internal card was toast would not the D-Link card solve that problem? Why can I get an IP address via wireless but not ethernet? Any ideas out there would be greatly appreciated.

    This is thread purports to have a solution to the Ethernet problem being reported in this forum. Haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but thought I'd post a link for others to see:
    Supposed Ethernet Fix
    They say shutting the PowerBook down, unplugging power and removing the battery for 10 and then resetting the PMU seems to solve the issue. Hope so!

  • Need another ethernet port

    Here's my problem:
    I have an old Laser Printer (which is great) which I connect to my computer via an AsanteTalk box which connects via the ethernet port.
    I just got DSL. I'm using a router so that my husband can hook up too.
    I was told that I could connect the Printer/AsanteTalk box into the router and it would work, but it doesn't.
    Can I simply add an Ethernet Hub to multiply the ethernet ports on my computer to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Donna

    The reason that printing through the built-in switch circuitry of your gateway or router does not work is simply because that device is not routing AppleTalk packets, and you've chosen AppleTalk as the means by which to interact with your LaserWriter. It may be because your device does not have such services enabled, or—more likely, it it was purchased in the last two to three years—it does not natively support AppleTalk encapsulation.
    You won't be successful talking to your printer unless both your Macintosh and your printer are connected on the same subnet using a switch or router, and those devices support passing AppleTalk packets bidirectionally.
    In the simplest setup, you would connect the switch to your gateway or router, and both the printer and the Macintosh to your switch, placing both devices on the same subnet and avoiding a situation where your router was required to support AppleTalk.

  • Ethernet failure:lightning strike

    hello
    my first post...is there a pci slot ethernet card that will work with my G4.
    lightning zapped my ethernet connection and also my partners PC,but she got a new card for £5.00
    otherwise its a new logic board.
    regards

    Get yourself a Surge supressor that has Ethernet dataline protection. I use an APC Back-Ups 750. Ever since I installed that between my cable modem and my broadband router, I haven't had a single piece of hardware die on me (Knock-on-wood...)
    Of course all my PC's and my Cable Modem, Router, and Switch all are connected to APC battery back-ups for power as well.

  • FIXED! Another install failure issue

    I have a problem I haven't seen before. I have Windows XPSP2
    and IE7. I am trying to use the standalone installer for Flash
    9.0.47.0. Installing from the automated website doesn't work. It
    tells me that it failed. I used the official Adobe Flash
    uninstaller several times with rebooting in between, as instructed.
    When I attempt to install the standalone file, this pops up
    immediately: The version of Adobe Flash Player ActiveX that you are
    trying to install is not the most current version. Please visit
    http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer
    to obtain the latest, most secure version.
    This also happens with version 9.0.64.0 RC.
    I am fairly computer-literate, but can't figure this one out.
    Any ideas? TIA

    Thanks Darren. Since I have been trying everything, I had
    already tried that. It wouldn't accept that command, something to
    the effect of this is an invalid thing. However, I FIXED THE
    PROBLEM! I was just getting ready to post my solution here. I had
    used the official uninstaller, but I read somewhere else that there
    was still stuff in the registry that was the problem. The task was
    to do a search for Flashplayer, Flash, things like that. I tried
    flash first, but there were too many unrelated things. Then, I
    tried flashplayer. I noticed that they were always in Macromedia
    folders. This has got to be old stuff, I thought. I had already
    backed up the registry, so I deleted the macromedia folders. I
    think there were two of them. I also did a search for macromedia,
    just to see what I could find. Also, in Internet Options, there
    were four nonsense things unknown in the view objects section. I
    deleted those. I don't remember the exact order I did things, but
    then I rebooted and ran CCleaner registry checker and Norton
    WinDoctor. They found a lot of stuff. Then I rebooted again and
    checked everything again and it seemed really clean. I tried the
    standalone installer for the hundredth time, and IT WORKED smooth
    as silk. I have been working on this problem for days, scouring
    Google for ideas. I am only moderately computer literate, so it
    took me a while to get this straight. I wish there was a better
    uninstaller, but I guess macromedia didn't care. There are a lot of
    people having trouble now.

  • Another installation failure

    Hi
    Ive had a look at some of the ideas here for installation but I still get problems, specifically a message:
    Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Data1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used.
    I get this whether I download from apple or run the cd, any ideas? be very grateful! Tanks

    hi rc29!
    Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Data1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used
    this one is rare ... but we've had two people so far report curing this by following the procedure described here:

    if you run into trouble, it's probably best to check in with Michael at that thread ... he's the authority.

  • Another iTunes failure

    I am at my wits end and it may be my fault.
    I foolishly downloaded the latest version of iTunes instead of upgrading from 4.8 and I lost my library of 19000 songs. Trying to get it back has caused further problems and now iTunes won't open at all after installation - the message iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close appears - giving me no idea at all what's wrong.
    I've tried all the obvious things uninstalling reinstalling etc and nothing works.My anti virus software has all been switched off, Norman, Zone Alarm and Avast and still nothing. I've also tried system restore to no avail. No one on the forum seems to have the same problem and on top of all this my ipod has to be sent away to be fixed.
    Anyone out there with any ideas?

  • Another 90b failure - new notebook

    I purchased a new Probook 450 g1 just under a month ago. Last week, I started getting the 90b error.
    I've cleaned the fan - it wasn't dirty as the machine is new.
    I verified the fan is running and blowing warm air.
    I did the hard reset.
    I did a BIOS update. That fixed it for a few days.
    This actually only seems to happen after a session where the fan needs to run hard, such as doing a video render or playing a game - but when it starts, it does it pretty much continually.
    I find it hard to believe my new machine could be failing already, especially considering this seems to be a constant problem. Is there any other troubleshooting steps I need to take before returning it for a refund?

    Yes it will work and don’t need to use that easy button. On this laptop when you go to Wireless Network Connection and select View Available Wireless Connection, you may be able to see your network select that and say connect. It may need to provide the wireless key if you have any.
