Another "failure to respond"

I have been reading about all the others that are experiencing problems with this... and find that none of the solutions are working.
I have been using ichat av perfectly before upgrading to tiger, and now i get the message that I am not respodning, even though it me that initializes or responds.
No change of hardware, or network or ISP has occured. Tiger is the only new element.
This surely must be a bug with iChat. This is extremely frustrating!!!
Help Apple!!!

Hello Dan,
You still do not say whether you are also using a ZyXEL. If you are, try Ralph's suggestion.
I am at version 10.4.2 ...Your system info still says that you are at "Mac OS X (10.4)". You can update your Discussions Preferences to reduce the confusion to those trying to help. The link you need is immediately below the "Logout" link at the upper right on this page.
... still am having problems.Test with other users to determine which end of the connection is causing the trouble. Both of you should test.
If you each do not have multiple buddies that can test with you, you can find info on test sites and people willing to test with you in the Want to Test your iSight With Another Person?FAQ.
Then, the person who needs to trouble shoot further can try the suggestions in Using iSight with iChat AV.
You and any chat partners also using 10.4.2 can try the additional suggestions for Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.

    Hi!
I have recently sorted out an issue with SIP port binding (thanks ralph), with immediate results - for details see: WAH1040, "another "failure to respond"" #34, 07:09pm Sep 21, 2005 CDT
However one week later, the problem occured again. I guided my parents through the same procedure as last time (unbinding of port 5060 through telnet), and they were prompted with a message which basically said that the port was already unbound. AV Chatting did not work immediately, but after quite a few tries it eventually started up.
Now two weeks later we tried again, and this time we had no luck, and gave up.
The error message has always been the same "x failed to respond", where x is me at my end, and them at their end.
It would seem that the SIP port unbinding is not enough to fix the problem.
    Any Ideas?
    Cheers,
    craig jonathan.

    Hi Matt,
A DHCP server is a device that can issue IP addresses to other devices connected to it with out the need of the users intervention.
Some IPs use this type to enable end users to just plug in and get a Public IP address. When you disconnect and reconnect then you may get a new IP address. This is no good if you are running Myhomewebpages.com from your computer (rather than a server somewhere "out there")
Dometic modems that route and routers also have the option of doing this and by default it is normally on.
So you can connect a router which is doing DHCP and issuing IP addresses to ALL devices downline from it (and in some cases Up-line as well) to a modem the is Issuing IP addresses to ALL devices downline from it. As your computer is downline from both your computer gets two IP addresses (one for each subnet).
The important thing with subnets id to make sure the previously issued IP addreses stop at that router. Static IPs will do this.
Modems have to be "told" to pass the Public IP address on inn "Bridge" mode.

  • Yet another "fail to respond".....

I've had a look around on the posts and can't find a problem that quite matches this. I bought my parents a G5 iMac with an external iSight just over a year ago. We've been using iChat happily since then, til today.
Originally I had G4 iMac with iSight on panther. Since then we've both upgraded to Tiger, and I've upgraded to a G5 iMac 2.1 with built in iSight. Still no problems. Just after christmas I invested in a Zoom ethernet modem and tonight was the first time since then we've tried to iChat. Depending on who's trying to accept the chat, they recieve the message that they have failed to respond.
Both firewalls are off and encryption is not enabled. This would suggest to me that it might be my new modem. So I powered up my old G4 connected with my old modem, but still no audio or videochats, with the same error messages.
I don't see why I should be getting the same problem with my old set up too when it worked fine before (G4 running Tiger too).
    Any thoughts?

    HI Veeto,
Ok your parents may have set up Port Forwarding like this (I can not UPnP listed on this screen shots).
UPnP stands for Universal Pug n Play.
It is one means of making sure the Ports in a cable or ADSL modem are open.
Port Forwarding is another and Port Tiggering is yet another.
Sometimes a cabele modem can be set as a Straight through device much like a USB modem.
An ADSL modem is likely to come with some ports pen by default which allow you to Plug and Play with your Web broswer and Mail applications and Send and get files over FTP.
However iChat uses ports ports above the 1024 threshold for these open ports. This means you have to open the ports.
If you have the Access IP and Default Password and User ID for your 5660ADSL modem then you will be able to do the same.
The page I linked you to has all the ports you need for AIM and Jabber accounts to work.
This is on of the other Zoom's Pages for the same thing. Similar but different.
You should be able to work out how to set yours up.
Ideally you need to use UPnP or Port Triggering to use two computers at one location with iChat as these both allow multiple computer to use the same ports (Port Forwarding does not).
It might be you have newer firmware on your modem than is shown in these pics and you might have UPnP.
    http://www.zoom.com/techsupport/adsl/adsl_x3.shtml (Firmware page).
I do not see that it says it has UPnP on thier site.

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

  • Failure to respond errors on iChat

Help! My brother and I are having problems when we try to connect with one another on iChat. Even if I initiate the call it says that I failed to respond. I've read that you should check all of your connections, but check them for what? My computer is new--shouldn't it be ready to go?

If you look at the User Tips Library at the head of page 1 of this forum, you'll probably find what you need to know about getting started with iChat.
Otherwise, post more details of your connection, modems, routers, internet connection, etc.

  • Failure to Respond

I'm trying to set up iChatAV and iSight for the first time with a PC user. We are both on AOL and can send IM messages. However, when either one of us invites the other to a video conference and we respond "accept", it tells us that the connection has failed due the other party not responding.
    Please help.....in a simplified way.
    thanks.
    Kathy

    Hi Kathy,
As has been said the PC end needs AIM 5.9 (Not Triton or the AIM 6 beta).
Another Option is Trillian on the PC, although the Pro version at $25 is needed to video chat.
Whichever app is used the thing has to be let through the XP firewall. Before Service Pack 2 this means disabling the XP firewall. At Service Pack 2 they have the option of Allowing Exceptions and that is done like this (you can use this for Any non Microsoft app by substituting the app name).
Scrolling to the top of that same link tells much of what is here.
As can be seen it also tells them to Enable UPnP if their modem is using that to open ports.
(UPnP is a method of controlling your modem from the applications/computer that opens the port when you need them. On most devices it is an On/Off setting).
This leads us to the Modem.
It either need to have the ports opened specifically or to Use UPnP to allow it to happen.
This site, http://portforward.com/routers.htm lists many devices that can be configured to open ports.
You click on the Modem name and then in the next page click on the App in question (In this case AIM Video for the PC end) . It will then tell you how to access the device with it's default setting and how to open the ports.
Both ends should test against the Test accounts in Table 1 http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/ContactTesters.html and possibly Real People in Table 2
Other than my page 12 there is also this site http://www.mvldesign.com/videoconferencetutorial.html to help with the set up.
One further note on the AIM 5.9 app. It needs to be Tuned to the Microphone and Camera (and each time they are unplugged) Instructions for that are here These instructions were written for AIM 5.5 and now the Preferences/Properties are accessed from the AIM Buddy List menu items. The real info starts at message #570
    Summary:
XP and AIM 5.9 (or Trillian)
Enable the app as an Exception or disable the Firewall.
Tune the app to Mic and Cam.
    Test.
    <hr>
At the Mac end similar things need to be done.
IF the Mac Firewall is On then ports need to be set there.
    See the second pic http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html
These ports or UPnP needs to be set in your device. Use the Port Forward site to see how to access your Device and then check the menus for UPnP.
If you don't have UPnP then you can resort to Port Forwarding.
NOTE: Often the last entry for the ichat ports listed there is wrong due to a typo. It should be port 5678 on UDP as a single port line and a new line for the group of 20 ports also on UDP.

  • Re: Pages persistent failure to respond

For the past week I have been experiencing a huge problem with Pages, the program fails to respond; at times numerous pages docs are "open" in the dock at the bottom of the screen, but when I click on them to access them, after displaying on the main screen they remain unusable as the widget whirls endlessly, other times Pages is even less responsive, namely no "open" docs even appear in the dock.
There are no viruses or worms, all other programs are responding normally, only Pages is capput!

Peter, thank you for your helpfulness and expertise.  I apologize for not including the necessary system info. with my request: OS X Version 10.8.4 (12E55); MacBook Pro, Early 2011; Pages '09 Version 4.3 (1048); Apple programs were up to date; I manually updated Intego Virus Barrier X6 software (which is set to automatically update) after experiencing the protracted problems, then updated to VirusBarrier 2013; I also did a full system scan after updating.
I have not had the extreme problem today and have been going into documents to remove fonts and links that may be problematic, taking smallest steps first.  Prior to this Mac, I only had used PCs and consequently am a long way behind the curve.
I don't know whether the problem is resolved yet, but if everything is working ok within a week's time, I will check off "This solved my question."
    Thanks again,
    Brad

  • Printer - Failure to Respond

When I put the hard drive to sleep and then reactivate it, the printer does not respond.
    Note the following:
If the computer has been asleep for a relatively short time, the problem does not occur.
The problem only arose recently. I have made no recent changes to the OS or the printer driver.
I am using the latest driver available.
If I restart the computer, the printer connection is restored.
Can anyone tell me what's going on?
    iMac5,1   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

No, however when the computer gets any sort of update like Firmware, Software, OS etc, it may change the way the components behave. Also, 10.4.9 originally caused a booting up error much like 10.4.4 (I believe it was that one). Anyway, it could be that I'd have a look at the Knowledge Base on the Support page of Apple.com. They'll have something listed if it is a known bug.
    Good Luck,
    Brian

  • Failure to respond, part II

    Hi,
I'm having the same problem as njneb; i.e., when I try to connect to someone else I get "failed to respond". Text works fine. I was able to connect once to my mom, but only once. After that, I "failed to passs data for 10 seconds". My brother-in-law can connect to others, but not to me (we both have new core duos).
I have tried opening up my ports, resetting my router, etc., but I just don't seem to know enough to fix this. Please help me.
I'm running a westell DSL modem into a Belkin 4 port router and then into airport express. Perhaps I only know enough to screw this up...
    TIA

iMac Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi romeowhisky,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
I'm running a Westell DSL modem into a Belkin 4 port router and then into airport express. Perhaps I only know enough to screw this up
This should be set up with one device being a DHCP server if you have not set Stica IP addresses
If none of the devices can do UPnP and you have to use port Forwarding or Port Triggering , this should also be done only once on your local network.
Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > Tcp/IP tab
This panel should tell you, just under the tabs at the drop down next to Configure IPv4, whether you are getting an IP via DHCP or Manually (Statically)
Under that is the IP the computer is using.
If it says DHCP and the IP is 10.0.1.xxx and the "router" IP further down says 10.0.1.1 then the Airport is doing DHCP.
Next you have to use Airport Admin Utility from the Applications/Utilities folder and Log on to the Airport and go to the Interent tab.
This will tell you if you are getting a(nother) DHCP giving address from the Westell.
The Network tab and Deselecting Distributing Addresses is how the Airports own DHCP server off.
This page may list your Westell and following the links will lead you to Port Forwading instructions.
You do not actually need the port Forwarding instructions themselves but it will have the Default IP to access the Westell in a web browser and the deault User ID and Password so you can actually check the settings.
    Post back what you find.

  • Restore failure - not responding

my ipod mini dowloaded restore info, the final step as shows on the screen is to plug it into the wall... which i did and nothing changes! plugged in (tried 3 different wall sockets) and the 'plug into wall' diagram still shows on screen. tried resetting twice, no luck... help!

    hi ombre!
hmmm. do you have access to a different AC Adapter? it's plausible that the one you have at the moment might be sick (rather than the ipod).

  • More on failure to respond

I've opened all the appropriate ports in the OS Firewall preferences, my linksys WRT54GS v.5 is set to UPnP (I've also tried port forwarding), and I've trashed ichat preferences. Both of my computers are configured exactly the same in the system prefs. I can make a video connection from the laptop to the appleutest sites, but I still cannot make a connection from my desktop computer. Any ideas?

Try setting up static ip addresses for each machine. I have the WRT54G router and I've noticed that static IP's help.

  • Ichat "failure to respond"

I've had an IMac Intel since January and I neve rbeen able to use the IChat Video or Audio. The ISight Cam works fine with yahoo messenger but I have problems with IChat Aim and AOL.
I have a Westell and Verizon as a ISP. I made the changes to my firewall ports as reccomended on the portforward website. I checked th error log under the connection doctor and I have a long list of error messages that state "Chat ended with error "
Should I have be using my external IP address when I add the ports in the router?

    Hi Tehuti5404,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
The current Ports listed on PortFrowrd.com are wrong.
    They should be these

The Table breaks them down into each Service and lists them as a whole.

  • Logic board failure - the 6th

my ibook is a little over 2 years old and i just had my 6th logic board failure last night. i knew it was going to happen after 5 previous failures... and it will certainly happen again.
even though its rare, i've heard of people getting their ibooks replaced. i know its not apple's policy with this issue (and wasn't the 5th time it happened), and i don't have applecare, but i'm wondering if i'm just screwed here.
i plan to call customer service and tell them that i know sending it in again for the LB repair extension program will just lead to another failure. there is no reason for me not to completely assume this... that my computer simply does not have the reliability needed for me to pursue my class projects. last night i lost my homework and it will not be turned in on time today.
i'm just asking for advice, based on other peoples experience, and given my situation, should i pursue a replacement or just reluctantly purchase a new computer?
    ibook - dual USB

How long will Apple keep covering these logic board repairs?
Is it indefinitely, or only for 3 years?
... because mine is in for its 3rd repair and it will be 3 years old in another 6 months - and I suspect it will only break again.
I was told by the Apple rep [from the division that would cover replacement] that they have only replaced iBooks for people who had the extended warranty.
So I offered to pay to he $200 that an extended warranty would have cost.
The rep argued that the other people's units had the extended waranty in place when their units broke.
So I explained that mine broke TWIICE within it's intial 1 year warranty - and asked why that isn't the same condition as he just asserted was requisite - at which point he diverted the subject of the conversation so as to not answer - I assume because my point was well made and he couldn't provide a reasonable answer.
If it were only that I have to repeastedly send it back for repair [assuming it will continue to be covered] but backing up and wiping the drive of private info and restoring it takes hours.
In my opinion the thing breaks because it's put under some stress when grabbing the case, and the case flexes. The reason I think that is so is because the symptoms can be made to happen or not [when they initially start] by flexing the left side of the case.
The situation leaves me thinking there is an argument that the product failed its original warranty of merchantability. So I'm wondering if I should just go to small claims near a apple facility.
When I even questioned whether a legal issue existed the apple rep threatened to terminate my call and hand me over to legal.
How can he do terminate my call if there is a program that promises to cover the repair? That made me feel even more that I need to seek other recourse now and not wait until it happens again.

  • Itunes installation failure, error code 80070246

I was attempting to upgrade to the latest I tunes version, unfortunately the installation stops during the publishing product information stage. I am using Windows Vista, home edition 32 bit.
While searching the help topics I have tried uninstalling itunes, quicktime, apple software update, apple mobile device support, bonjour and would have uninstalled apple application support if it showed up.
After rebooting and attempting to reinstall (with another failure) I tried running Microsoft fix-it basic and advanced because I came across this fix in another article for this error code. Now not only can I not install Itunes, no updates show up in the history for Windows Update and when I run Windows Update it also fails with another error code 80080005.
After spending 2 days working on this I am worse off than I was when I started, does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do next?

A quick search of the error code shows a VBScript error. Perhaps this could help:
