ANOTHER FIX FOR UNRECOGNIZED IPODS WITH COMPUTER FREEZES

Wonder of wonders, Apple has actually done something about this problem.
Here's what they told us to do:
1. Download the latest version of iTunes FROM THE WEBSITE. It's version 6.0.1.3.
2. Back up your music just to be safe.
3. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, and uninstall iTunes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Install the new version of iTunes.
6. Restart again.
7. Do a little happy dance of joy, as (hopefully) your iPod works now!
Tips that we have found to get things working:
-Always close iTunes before plugging in the iPod. Let iPod open iTunes on its own.
-It will be slow. Be patient.
Hope this helps everyone!

P.S. Keep the iPod unplugged from the computer during this process. Plug it back in once you've verified that the new iTunes version is installed, and you've closed it.

By "charger," do you mean a USB power adapter that plugs into the wall outlet (used to "charge" the iPod), or are you asking about the USB docking cable that connect the iPod to the computer?

Do you have a fix for the problem with Avast. Your upgrade process notifies me that it is not compatible with Avast so I always delete it. Soon I will just start using IE since Avast has worked fantastic for me. But I would rather not. Please help.

Avast needs to update their Web Rep add-on for Firefox 5.0.

  • Fix for unresponsive IPOD

I own a computer business and I have a lot of broken IPOD's come in the door. Last night I got one that I have never seen. It kept restarting itself. When it would come up there was a blue screen with data flashing.
The IPOD was unresponsive not showing up in iTunes or on "My Computer." I plugged it up to a Mac and still No Response. I got on here and read all of your posts about taking it apart and disconnecting the battery. I did that, and still, NOTHING.
Here is what I did to fix the iPod. It is very simple, but I thought I would share with you.
    1) Plug the iPod into any computer.
    2) Hold down the Menu and the select button for 20 seconds.
    3) When you let go, the apple symbol will come on. Immediately hold down the select button and the play button. Your computer should immediately recognize the iPod. (If it does not work the 1st time, try the sequence 3 or 4 times to insure that you got the sequence correct.)
I hope this helps some of you who are needlessly taking your iPod apart.

Yes, this is forcing the iPod into Disk Mode. Often this will work as well for an ipod that keeps rebooting over and over and never getting to the main menu. Once in Disk Mode, iTunes will often "see" it and you can now perform a restore on the iPod.

  • FIX FOR SOME IPODS!!!

This fix came from Caspar (Thank you SOOO much!). It took me 10 minutes to do this and now my beloved ipod nano is back! Hopefully this will help some of you:
Original Problem: Updated iTunes(6.0.5) and iPod nano (1.2). After the update, iTunes would not recognize my iPod and therefore would not let me remove the iPod from my computer, which seems to be the problem most people are having.
    The Fix:
*uninstall iTunes, iPod, and any updates (make sure anything related to these two programs are not on your computer)
    *Open Control Panel
*Click the "switch to classic view" link, if
    necessary
    *Double click "administrative tools"
    *Double click "computer management"
*Under "storage" click on "disk management"
    *Find your iPod's listing
*Right-click on it and click "format"
*Select "FAT32" and start the format
*After reformatting, remove iPod from computer
*Download iTunes directly from the Apple website (I didn't restart my computer at the prompt)
*Download 6/28/06 update for iPod (do NOT plug iPod in before doing this!)
*Open update for iPod and wait until prompt to plug iPod in (do not plug in early)
*Wait for the update....and there ya have it!!
Hopefully this will help some people, as I have spent the past 2 weeks doing the 5R's thing. After completing the steps above, I haven't had a problem with my iPod..and now my Nike+ works!! Thanks again, Caspar...you're a genius!!

  • Transfering songs over on iPod with iTunes = Freeze

I recently got a new laptop with Windows Vista running on it. I downloaded iTunes to be able to transfer songs from my laptop to my iPod. Everything worked fine as it has done on my old laptop with XP until one day when I tried to delete songs from my iPod or disconnect my iPod from my iTunes it started to totally freeze and just "not answering". I tried to use my old laptop again to transfer songs and the same happened.
The half-transfered songs I have on my iPod isn't working. They are there, but nothing happens when I click play on them.
Does anyone have a similar problem?
My iPod is an iPod Color 20GB bought 2 years ago or something. Currently have around 3000 songs on it.

I accidently erased a lot of the songs on my I-pod (when trying to add a playlist, it was added and everything else erased). Upon attempting to transfer songs back, the sync froze (many times). Luckily I have a MacBook and was able to transfer my songs back to my IPod with that. The ITunes in the Mini has been updated, I tried using another port, I restarted the computer many times; it will start to sync then it will freeze, usually at the same place. What's up with that?

  • IPod (with video) freezes Windows XP - POSSIBLE SOLUTION

    Hi everyone,
I bought a 5g 30gig iPod with video a few days ago, and immediately ran into the "iPod freezes Windows when connected via USB 2.0" problem. I read through every possible post on this website, on iLounge, on Microsoft's forums, etc. There seems to be quite a substantial number of people running into this problem, because I've been seeing posts about this all over the place.
My specific problem was that whenever I plugged in my iPod, the iPod would display "do not disconnect" and iTunes would begin to recognize it - sometimes it would reach the point where it would begin to update - and then the computer would completely freeze. The iPod would "disconnect" and be completely usable, but the computer would not respond to anything what-so-ever. I had to perform a hard restart to get the computer usable again. No error messages, no "ctrl-alt-del" saves, nothing. It would also lock in the same exact way if I just plugged the iPod in without starting iTunes (iTunes wouldn't automatically start, computer would just lock up after a few moments).
Anyway, my problem was solved through a procedure I saw in a post somewhere (I'm pretty sure it was on these forums, actually). Basically, it seems as though there is some sort of conflict between iTunes, Quicktime, and Symantec's anti-virus.
The process is pretty simple - completely turn off whatever version of Symantec you're using (Norton AntiVirus, Firewall, whatever... I'm running Symantec Corporate AntiVirus 10). Then, uninstall Quicktime and iTunes (it might not be absolutely necessary to completely uninstall iTunes - I uninstalled Quicktime and then "repaired" the iTunes installation).
This seemed to resolve the situation entirely - I've updated my iPod three times now, and charged it, with no problems. Hopefully this continue to work... !
Incidentally, I think it's disgusting that this seems to be such a prevalent problem, yet Apple so far refuses to acknowlege its existence, much less provide a solution. As a long-time Windows/Microsoft user (notice I didn't say 'fan'), I expected much more from Apple.
    Anyway, good luck!

    Hi!
I have the same problem, though using iPod Touch.
My PC crashes just after charging sound on th iPod sounds.
I can be loggen on or not.
I have tried the 5R's two times
    I have removed SP3, didn't help.
I have updated to iTunes 8.0.1: Didn't help.
But I have an portable PC (job PC) where it is working fine, both PC's using XP Pro, english version.
So, just now, I am very dissapointed bu the Apple products (and it took me 20 years of Software Engineering before i bought something from Apple ..... )
So the stress test will be: Will Apple do anything with this ?

  • Are there any fixes for iPad 2 with OS 8.1.1.

Are there any fixes for the iPad 2 IOS 8.1.1?  I've had problems with Safari and other Apps crashing or locking up, and with extremely slow touch response.  These problems have been occurring since the last update.  At times the iPad becomes unusable.  I have been keeping all programs closed and history and web site data cleared.  Thanks for any help you can give.

    Hi, dannilee,
I have exactly the same problem. The device was my favorite computer until 8.1.1. Now it runs s-l-o-w-l-y, requires endless reboots.
To improve the performamce, I have tried these:
1.Go to Setting->General->Accessibility->Reduce Motion. Turn on.
2.Reset iPad device settings using Setting->General->Reset->Reset All Settings. Its increase iPad performance little better.
3.Hold the sleep/wake button and home button upto 8 seconds. This will turn off your iPad. Then turn on iPad. Wait few moments. Do the same thing twice to solve this issue.
Solution 3 worked for me. And, I always recommend you to backup your iPad first before any action to avoid any data loss.
Hope it is useful for you.

  • Trouble Syncing iPod with Computer

So, when I plug my iPod into my laptop, it doesn't sync with iTunes. It's as if the iPod isn't even connected at all. However, it seems like the iPod recognizes that it's connected, because it asks me if I want to "trust my computer". The computer itself also seems to recognize that the iPod is connected, because it will automatically open the pictures folder from my iPod onto my laptop screen. But, for whatever reason, iTunes doesn't sync with the iPod, it acts as if nothing has been connected. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

however when I try to sync my older ipod with it and upload some new music to it, Itunes keeps telling me that all the previous songs will be erased
Yes, that's correct. If you don't have the songs that are currently on your iPod also in your new iTunes installation, they will be erased from the iPod if you sync it. Best to start afresh by first transferring all the music on your iPod back to your new computer/iTunes library.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
Once all the music is safely back in your new iTunes library, you can sync your iPod as normal.

  • Need help with computer freezing up.

I seem to be having some trouble with my computer freezing up from time to time. Usually it's when I'm using the program Transmission or Toast Titanium. I can't access the applications files, the Dock icons or do any force quit on the programs. Also I can't do a restart or shut down. I have tried using the keystrokes to shut down and restart, but as well this doesn't work. Everything gets frozen. The only way I can stop the freeze is to manually turn the computer off by the on/off button in the back of the computer. I have heard it is really bad to do so. What else could I do when the computer is frozen like this to get it unstuck? Also being that this has happened a few times, how do I correct the programs so that it won't keep happening?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
When you run a program in Mac it loads the necessary information to the RAM and access it from there. If other programs are running in the computer along with the Toast Titanium then there is a possibility of the memory unable to address all the requirements. The best way is to keep an eye on the memory usage from Activity monitor when you start using the Toast next time.
While trying to burn the data into a CD the files are first loaded into the memory so that it will be written to the disk. So what I will suggest is to close all the applications and wait for a reasonable amount of time to see whether the computer frees up memory and starts to write onto the disk.
If not, you will also need to free up some hard drive space.
Also in the ~/Library/Logs/Crash Reporter look for crash files and see what is causing the issue.
Shutting down the computer with the Power on/off button is not that good however if nothing else is working, you have no choice other than that.
    Hope that helps....
I wanted to add few more tips.

  • Another Fix for Spotlight! Oh Boy!!

There must be a couple hundred lines of code circulating these threads to "fix" spotlight. Other fixes include removing folders adding folders, reinstalling systems, migrating...bla, bla, bla...
    Here is another fix.
Start your system as you normally do. Go out into your car, start it, then shut it off. Come back into your house, restart your system. Go back out to your car, this time after getting in touch the rear view mirror three times while saying "Oingo-Boingo_".
Now go back into your house, and spotlight should have finished indexing. If it has not then you forgot to pronounce the "_" at the end of "Oingo-Boingo" as prescribed.
    Good luck.

This is for all of you with internet connected bars yet no internet on your ipod touch
If you have tried everything on forums and youtube from doing the network reset to unplugging your router for 10 seconds and replugging it back in and it has not worked for you then this is what you do.
Unplug router and other internet devices for 4 minutes "not the ipod" unlike the original 10 seconds .
Plug back in your router and devices
Go to settings on your ipod touch, general , reset , reset network settings.
    It will reboot.
    Boom your on.
I called apple and was amazed that this works. Just make sure that router is unplugged for 4 minutes. No one on any forum has said that as a fix for internet. Your welecome.

Give apple technical support a call. They will stay on the phone with you till its fixed. They have very simple steps and know what there doing. From the problems your having. If he/she cannot fix it then call 1 more time and hopefully you will get someone with more knowlage. They fixed mine in 2 minutes and I tried everything before that

  • How do you fix Sad face Ipod with exclamation mark

So i've been having a few problems here with my ipod hopeing that someone out there could help me out. So now my Ipod wont charge, it wont hook up to my computer and whenver i hook it up to the charger or the computer the sad face ipod comes on with the address www.apple.com/support/ipod anyways i also get this sign on the screen which is the charging sign but the bar isnt moving, its like its in the charge mode but nothings charging.. then after about 5 minutes it goes back to the apple logo and then tries to restart itself. When its turning on it also makes this clicking sound its like the hard disk is turning on and then turning off... SO basically i cannot get my ipod to turn on ... i cannot get it to charge, and i cannot get it to come up on my computer.. any suggestions?

Last week, I managed to fix up my daughter's iPod with the same problem. However, you need to have a PC to help you. First, put your iPod into Disk Mode (you may need to plug it with the AC Charger), press "Select"+"play" keys, then plug it with a PC, a window pop up and indicates that your iPod cant be read. Open the iPod Updater (make sure you pre-install the latest iPod updater before you connect your iPod with the PC) and click Restore. Once it has been completed, plug it back with your Mac, and do the Restore in Mac version

    Thank you.

iPads sync to 1 computer only.
All media and apps are tied to the Apple ID that purchased them.
Without your relatives ID and password, you cannot update any of the Apps.
