Another Font Issue

More font weirdness. A font that I use in Word and in Quark (the Baskerville MT Expert Set), although still installed after the Leopard upgrade, are invisible in both the preview window of Font Book and in Word. And "invisible" is the correct word. When I import a Word document containing that font into a Quark document, the text appears fine in the Quark document.

As far as I can see this is a problem with all Expert fonts. It looks very much like a repeat of an old bug from 10.3.5:
http://www.macmedics.com/tenthreefive.htm
I've filed a report. It's very frustrating.

  • ***FONT ISSUES: How do I create a font repository/server??? ***

Before I explain my font problem, let me first say that I hope that SOMEONE out there/here has good knowledge of fonts, (storage/management/etc.) and can take the time to help me out with my problem. I'd be ETERNALLY grateful for a solution to this problem!! Let me also explain the workflow setup I am coming from. I work at a production company that has 3 edit suites, accessing media from a SAN, managed by FibreJet software. We are running Apple Mac Pro's with 2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon chips, and 8 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory. The 3 stations can have READ access to any one drive on the SAN at the same time with no problem, but only one station at a time can have WRITE access to a drive. We each have our own fonts (~2500) on our local systems, and we are all using Extensis Suitcase Fusion 12.1.6 to manage our fonts.
Over the past few months, a couple of projects have reminded us that we have to address a problem in the way we manage our fonts. A project was started in Edit 1 (E1). Footage was loaded, music added and graphics created all in E1. The graphics were made in the Title 3D generator. Near the end of the project, a change had to be made and the original editor and edit suite (E1) was unavailable, so another editor needed to make the change in E2. This is a workflow that we use all the time, and usually don't have a problem. However, this time, when the graphic change was made, either the font that was originally used was missing from E2, or it was not activated. In either case, FCP simply substituted another font in it's place. Unlike Photoshop, FCP does not give any warning when this happens, it just changes the font, so unless you are familiar with the project, you may not know that the change occurred.
As I said, these problems have reminded us that we have to address a problem in the way we manage our fonts. One solution I have thought of would be to consolidate all our fonts onto one of our SAN media drives, and always read that drive. We would then add fonts from this drive, instead of adding from our individual local drives, and hopefully avoiding the "font-switch" problem in the future.
Questions arise, such as: Will Extensis read a font from a SAN drive, or does it have to be local? Will there be a problem with the fact that the drive will be READ only, as opposed to having WRITE access, since all three of us cannot write to the same drive at the same time? Should we just use Apple's own FontBook, instead of Extensis Suitcase, or do we even look into something like Linotype's FontExplorer X, (which I stumbled upon during searches for solutions to our problem)?
If anyone has any answers to my questions, or any solutions we haven't thought of, I'd be very grateful for your help!

Will Extensis read a font from a SAN drive, or does it have to be local?
Here's a bit of information on a SAN setup.
Storage Area Network (SAN) is a high-speed subnetwork of shared storage devices. A storage device is a machine that contains nothing but a disk or disks for storing data. A SAN's architecture works in a way that makes all storage devices available to all servers on a LAN or WAN. As more storage devices are added to a SAN, they too will be accessible from any server in the larger network. In this case, the server merely acts as a pathway between the end user and the stored data.
Because stored data does not reside directly on any of a network's servers, server power is utilized for business applications, and network capacity is released to the end user.
So as I understand it, your Mac's will all see data on a SAN drive array the same as it would a drive that is part of any LAN or WAN. In other words, if activating fonts from a drive on a typical server works, then doing so from a SAN should work the same.
That said, I've never had the opportunity to try it. The easiest way to find out would be to simply drag some fonts into Suitcase that you know are on the SAN storage and see if the activate as you would expect. An issue that may come up is that multiple users may not be able to activate the same fonts at the same time. That wouldn't specifically be a write issue since Suitcase doesn't need to perform a write when opening fonts (other than to update the font cache files on the local drive), but rather if the server considers the files "locked" (in use) to the first user to access them. All depends on how the server is set up, or how Suitcase handles fonts it currently has active. That is, will the server lock the files, or Suitcase, if either?
One solution I have thought of would be to consolidate all our fonts onto one of our SAN media drives, and always read that drive. We would then add fonts from this drive, instead of adding from our individual local drives, and hopefully avoiding the "font-switch" problem in the future.
That would be my first suggestion whether you can read simultaneously read the fonts from the SAN drive or not. I imagine each project is kept in its own folder. Within that, all fonts should be kept together in a single subfolder. An obvious name for that folder is good, such as "Fonts_jobnumber". If Suitcase and/or the server will allow all of you to access the same fonts at the same time, just activate them from the SAN. If not, copy the fonts to your local drive first and then activate.
Should we just use Apple's own FontBook, instead of Extensis Suitcase, or do we even look into something like Linotype's FontExplorer X, (which I stumbled upon during searches for solutions to our problem)?
Font Book is a very weak font manager. It's only advantage in a case like this is that every font you open gets copied to the local drive into one of the two Fonts folder you can designate in its preferences. Then you're always opening the fonts locally. The bad part is that when you use hundreds or thousands of fonts, they all get copied to your Mac as you add fonts. This increases startup times, sometimes dramatically as Font Book has to check all of those fonts during startup against its database to see which should be active and which not. The larger that database gets, the more likely it is to get corrupted.
Suitcase is a far more elegant solution for heavy font usage since you can activate fonts in place. They don't need to be copied anywhere to use them. FontExplorer X can be set up to do the same thing. Depending on what features of Suitcase you use, you may still prefer it over FontExplorer X, even though the latter is free.

  • ICal Print List Hang / Font Issue / Sync Problems...

Okay, here's a couple issues all wrapped up into one thread/post - reason is cause I suspect they may all be tied together somehow, but am not sure.
    Sync Problems...
Regarding the Syncing problems, you can find an ongoing thread about @ http://forums.markspace.com/viewtopic.php?t=1632
In short, some of us are having issues with events syncing to our Palm to the wrong timezone, causing them to be an hour off (usually within the new & old DST date change). Yes, all the usual fixes have been tried - pls read the thread noting "adairnet" and ymatto" postings.
Also, in addition to this time issue, I have iCal events that I've deleted in iCal still show up on the Palm after one-way syncing!
    Print List Hang...
Every week I print a "list" of events from a certain calendar. The past couple weeks I noticed some lines in the notes field printing on top of each other. Twas odd indeed, but I hadn't had the time to look into the reason. Then this week I was going thru my usual printing proceedure and now iCal locks up, hangs up, crashes, forcing me to force-quit the program. It's usually after I extend the dates beyond 2 or 3 days, but I've not been able to find a consistency. I've redone events thinking they were corrupt with no success.
    Font Problems...
After the Print List issue above, I opened my Console program to see if it was reporting anything. At first it indicated that it could not find Helvetica Neue and would substitute it for Helvetica. This put me in touch with some font corruption - so I got rid of those bad fonts and activated Helvetica Neue which got rid of that message. But made me wonder if there are more font problems causing the print hanging & syncing problems. I have FontAgent Pro and do have some font issues that I'm trying to work out.
But the Console is displaying another string of messages every time the Print List proceedure hangs up which I cannot figure out...
2007-04-24 16:24:54.151 iCal[28975] NSATSGlyphStorage inconsistency. Cannot find run storage for character range {138 67} for CTRun 0xDBE87D0. Ignoring the run...
2007-04-24 16:24:55.175 iCal[28975] -[NSMutableStringProxyForMutableAttributedString replaceOccurrencesOfString:withString:options:range:] called with out-of-bounds range. For apps linked on Tiger this will raise an exception. For earlier apps it will produce this one-time warning and continue with existing behavior (which is undefined).
2007-04-24 16:24:55.176 iCal[28975] * NSThread: ignoring exception '* -[NSMutableStringProxyForMutableAttributedString replaceOccurrencesOfString:withString:options:range:]: Range or index out of bounds' that raised during delayed perform of target 0xdde58d0 and selector 'renderPreview'
So, all of this is causing me to wonder if the iCal or SyncServices database is corrupt. Is there a way to dig into the iCal db and check for corruption &/or fix it?
Or does anybody have any further suggestions on any of these issues?
    thanx.jason.

    RedKamel,
The SyncServices folder should be avoided like "a swarm of bees". This article discusses some of the issues that can arise when the SyncServices folder is deleted or modified:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301920
Data loss and Data corruption can result from deleting or modifying the SyncServices folder, and that data loss or corruption can be propogated to devices, .Mac, and other applications that sync with SyncServices.
If you have isolated an issue with the other steps in your post, I would recomend speaking with AppleCare before removing that folder.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Font issue in exported PDF from indesign

Font issue in exported PDF from indesign:
In Indesign file we have kept a sentence in “Univers LT Std” (San serif font) with all caps style that was orginally in lower case. Refer below
When we selected the sentence in exported PDF some of the characters are not selected. Refer below.
If we enable “create tagged PDF“ in export PDF setting, then the problem is solved. Refer below.
Can you please check why this problem happened? In another project also we have faced this same problem but different font “Frutiger LT Std” with all caps style. Here also same San serif font. Please check and advise to solve this issue permanently.

Without tags a PDF is a silly amount of letters, images and lines, with tags all itams a kept in their semantic context. So work with tags as it is the only way to get correct selections and export to other file types like Word DOCX.
Without tags InDesign reads from left to right from top to bottom and the font geometry might influence the correct order of letters.
Why should anyone work without tags today? If you open a tagged PDF in Acrobat DC it is much faster than without tags.

  • Font issue with left sidebar in Mail

I'm having perhaps another/different font issue with Mail after updating to Snow Leopard.
I do have a Dell 24" LCD hooked up to my MBP. I've noticed the comments/links related to the font smoothing issues. I've played around with that with no noticeable change.
Check out the before & after pics. Anyone have thoughts?

Same issue here whenever I'm using a different color profile. Only the default color profile seems to work properly with the new sidebar in mail.

  • Terminus 9pt font issue in Konsole after upgrade

I have a slightly weird font issue in Konsole following a bunch of upgrades today. Basically, at the beginning of the command line and the beginning of subsequent words on that line, the very first character sort of flashes and gets truncated if it is one of several letters. Very narrow characters are not affected (e.g. i) but most are (e.g. n, g, m, r etc.). Once I press enter, the characters look perfectly normal - the issue only occurs on the line being edited and while I am entering or within words as opposed to spaces. Moreover, it only occurs for the first letters of words. Subsequent letters look fine. Once a space is typed following the first word, the character looks normal unless and until I type another letter or return to edit the first word. If I type "cat" it will be a truncated c; at "cat " all looks fine; then "cat c" and the first c is truncated; "cat cat " all is well; "cat c" with the cursor moved back over the second c and the second c rather than the first is truncated.
Any thoughts as to what I should check? I'm using the infinality stuff from AUR. I updated that last night. However, I don't _think_ I saw the issue today until after upgrading the kernel. Here are the last entries from pacman.log:

I'm using Terminus (TTF) in size 9 in Konsole. This hasn't been changed for quite a while.
Any suggestions on how best to troubleshoot this? Is it possible that I need to rebuild some other AUR packages associated with the infinality ones but which haven't actually been updated? Or is it likely to be to do with something else in the list?
EDIT: It only seems to be some fonts at some sizes e.g. Monaco 8pt is OK but Terminus 9pt isn't; Terminus 10pt is OK; etc.

Applications/Font Book and validate your fonts.

  • IPhoto calendar and book font issue

On or near Nov. 30th, 2009, I launched iPhoto 8.1 to produce a calendar. The upgrade option came up and I proceeded to do the installation.
I attempted to upgrade to iPhoto 8.1.1 on a new 2.66 GHz Quad Mac Pro running OS 10.6.2. Install did not work the first time.
I then launched iPhoto to produce a new calendar. Prior attempts have not had any font issue.
When selecting my favourite font, Kon Tiki, a different font appears. When selecting that new font, yet another font appears. This continues indefinitely.
This issue also occurs when creating new books. Existing books and calendars in my Keepsakes retain their original font but I do not want to test if they change until this is resolved.
I tried reinstalling original application from Time Machine but error continues. I then tried a second successful time to install the upgrade to iPhoto 8.1.1
I have since tested this on my 3.06 GHz iMac running OS 10.6.2. This system had already been upgraded to iPhoto 8.1.1 but no calendars or books had been produced since the upgrade.
    The same issues occur.
2.0 GHz MacBook running iPhoto 8.1 does not have this issue.

I ran Font Book and Validated all fonts. Cleaned up quite a bit but did not resolve the issue. Fonts are no longer as randomly selected (Kozuka Gothic Pro now selects Kon Tiki Kona consistently) but does show the secondary font choice of the font above it. Current version on Mac Pro seems to corrupt the iPhoto Library. Accessing those iPhoto Libraries from different computer (2.0 GHz iMac running iPhoto 8.1 resolves the issue and reinstates selected fonts).
Second issue now occurring where previously created Calendars are becoming Books on Mac Pro system. I have tried removing all iPhoto files and reinstalling from iLife '09 disc then upgrading to 8.1 but error still occurs.
How do you remove all iPhoto files and where are they. I can either reinstall them from iLife '09 disc (again) or copy them from MacBook system where they appear to be working.
I'm not completely able to locate all iPhoto files it seems.

  • Iweb missing font issue

When I open iweb I get a pop up window which tells me that there's a missing font CourierNewPSMT
Could someone tell me how to get rid of it, and it only happens in Freestyle template
I couldn't find CourierNewPSMT font anywhere

    Hi,
I suddenly started getting messages in iWeb that said the Font "ArialMT" is substituted for the missing font "Arial".. But it was only happening on new pages I had created.. Can't say what had changed much on my system for this to occur.. But had me baffled because FontBook HAD Arial and NO ArialMT..
Anyway to cut a long story short.. I didn't want Arial as the font anyway as we're changing over to Verdana.. It didn't matter if I selected all on the webpage and changed it all to Verdana, i'd still get the error message regarding ArialMT and Arial..
So my fix was to navigate to: ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
    1. Copy the file "Domain" somewhere else as a backup (desktop is good)
    2. Right click on the "Domain" file inside ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/ and Show Package Contents
Now this is where many people say open index.xml.gz and look for the problem fonts.. Well in my experience index.xml doesn't have any code regarding fonts.. SO another folder caught my attention inside "Domain" called "domain-0B29016B-4545-4DC4-9DDB-74AA1E25AJ34.. If you have this folder it will probably have a different string of letters and numbers to mine..
    3. Go into your "domain-xxx etc" folder and navigate down to the first compressed xml file you can fint.. I had like 30 because I have almost 30 blog type pages in my site (just the way its designed I guess).. Anyway if you uncompress the .xml.gz file you've found and open that in text edit you'll probably be able to find font information in there.
As I had many to have to find and replace on I found it easier, to select all the .gz files and open them all together which mass uncompressed them in their relative locations.. Then I had to go through and delete the original .gz files otherwise iWeb won't save and publish the code changes you make. In otherwords, you need to have ONLY .xml files left over and iWeb will recompress them when you save in iWeb next.. I also used dreamweaver to mass find and replace the code, but textedit can do it one by one.
Hope this helps anyone having this issue..
I know if I went and made a brand new page in iWeb it will get this font issue again on the new page.. So my next task is to find the original template files and change the font instances in it so new pages don't cause headaches..

  • Browsers (Firefox etc.) have font issues

Safari can't read all web pages. Mac support suggests Firefox, but when loaded the much of the text reads like this ':=@@*$++?aKHMO=^T6'. When Netscape was downloaded the same issue occurs. Since these issues Safari's speed has degraded significantly.
When I created another account and downloaded Firefox the font issues don't occur. I don't want to move everything to another account. Is there a solution?

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems, make sure that the window is not maximized:
    *<b>View > Zoom > Reset</b> (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)

  • Adobe Pro 8.0 Mac to Windows Font Issue

Here is my dilemma: We have a fillable form created in Acrobat Pro 8.0 on a Mac. It is sent to a Windows Vista (Acrobat Reader) user who then fills it, saves it and sends it to a Windows XP user (again using reader). When the XP user opens it, the characters are all changed to dots. If it is sent to another Vista user, it is fine. To me, it sounds like a font issue. Can someone give me some insight on how we might go about fixing the issue? Thanks.

How do I check to see where the fonts are embeded? Originally the form was created in MAC InDesign then imported into Acrobat to insert the fillable fields. Our grpahics person is not sure where to check the settings in Acrobat. Thanks again.

  • Flash player 8 - font issues

Having font issues exporting to Flash Player 8 using CS6. The problem is both PC (Windows 7) and Mac (10.8.3). The font in dynamic text boxes will not display properly, ie reverting to regular or not at all. Seems to be when using demi/semi and sometimes bold type, Myriad Pro Semibold/Avenir Demi in particular. Any help gratefully appreciated. Note: Has to be Flash Player 8 due to client.

Seriously, if I have to repeat another question I will stop replying on this thread.
If you tell it to generate a size report in the publish settings and look in the file, what does it tell you about what characters are being embedded and where? If you are not able to figure it out from looking at the report, feel free to paste the text of it back here.

  • Having Font Issues In Safari After Upgrading To Leopard

So...i'm having some font issues in Safari after upgrading to Leopard....
It works fine on my desktop but not on my laptop. They both run on Leopard.
Also, it works in Firefox but not Safari.
Here's some screens of what it looks like. This only pertains to any site that uses this font and it isn't uncommon, (sites like google, yahoo, and the WoW Forums)
    http://i21.tinypic.com/1z6cwsx.jpg
zoom in to see what i'm talking about, it's really messed up on the full screen

Anyways...any idea on how I can fix this?

I disabled the stencil font and deleted it. No luck here.
I ran a font validation check and this is what showed up, don't know if this means anything.

  • Apple Mail Font Issues with Outlook

Have apple fixed this issue with fonts changing and appearing differntly when you send emails to users on Microsoft Outlook. Most of the forums have message posts from 2011 but 2 years on you would think the issue would be fixed.
I have a whole team of computer illiterate staff and can't expect them to change the font format everytime they send an email. It looks so unprofessional sending emails out like this - next step is to switch to outlook for mac - any good feedback on this, I've heard if you have high volume emails working through gmail imap accounts that it just crashes all the time?
Any help or plugins would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Kurt,
Thank you for your response. I am fully aware of what you have just said, and I do follow this basic protocol. The 'gripe' is that it seems that when we setup our message font in preferences one is under the impression this is the font that will be sent out. I later discovered this is only my screen font, and when we compose an email this font (for instance Arial 12pt) is not tagged in the outgoing message. In-fact it is left blank, and the receivers mail will change it to a default such as times new roman. However this seems to create strange changes on the receivers end and sometimes the font can come out huge or varying, there is no consistency and the email looks ugly, As a business owner, my email is my letter head, and is a communicational face of my business.
The issue could be easily resolved with an option for an Apple Mail user to set up what font they want their out going message to be in and for Apple Mail to actually tag that font in the message. Without the 'user' having to each time manually choose this font.
I always use Arial 12pt for my out going message, but it's frustrating that I have to each time select my text and change the font and point size, (which means my screen message font has to be another font and size otherwise apple mail does not pick up the change). What I, and from what I can see many people, don't understand is most Mail Software (if not all), except Apple mail, don’t have this issue. And if I used a different mail app I can choose my out going font such as Arial 12pt, and the receiver will see the same font (obviously providing it's a websafe font), and I don't need to keep telling the programme to make it Arial every-time I compose a new message. This would save time.
I know that this ‘gripe’ is not only myself, and that there is a large number of people out there also annoyed by this, and many Apple uses choose not to use Apple mail simply because of this reason. Which is a shame, because Apple mail in my opinion is the best mail app out there.
I don't expect the programme to be perfect, but this is basic user experience and basic functionality, so why can't Apple correct it? All the amazing features in the world are worthless if the basics ‘user experience’ is not friendly.
I really really hope Apple does something about it, or at least develop a plugin that we can download to sort it out for those of us who want to use mail as I have described.
Attachment Tamer has sorted out the whole compatibility and friendliness of attachments, and I can set up how I want my attachments to work, I do it once and don't have to think about it again. I did have to pay for this function. But I should not have had to. this is not a feature I should have had to plugin, it should come standard with Mail, every other mail software does, so it is a user expectation... And the same goes for how we set up our fonts, in Rich Text, I should only need to set it up once and not think of it again, a general out going font should be a standard function.
As I said, I do ‘put up with it’ mostly because I’m an Apple fan, and In general hugely happy with the Apple products. But should someone have to ‘put up’ with something like this, when it is something so small that should really have been sorted out years ago in the early versions of Mail?
Sorry Kurt, I'm not really moaning at you directly, it's just that its a frustrating non-feature that I can see Apple is not even taking into consideration, and probably will never look at sort out. Why, is the question?

  • Muse Font Issues

    hi
I just developed my first Adobe Muse site  it looks good!!
however...I used the web safe font Helvetica throughout...
and it shows up nicely on a Mac but converts to another font on someone elses PC
    What can I do?

    Hi Kzierler,
Further to this issue. I'd suggest you to use web fonts for cross platform consistency. As mentioned in this article : http://helpx.adobe.com/muse/tutorials/typography-muse-part-1.html#AddingwebfontstoaMusepro ject, Web fonts are hosted by Typekit and display dynamically as a page loads, hence making your site independent and not relying on the fonts your site visitor is using on his machine.

  • InDesign font issue - displaying spaces as "D" using Fontin Sans

I've been having a strange font problem in InDesign CS3 for a couple days. When opening docs using ex libris' font "Fontin Sans" (in various weights) ID is messing with the formatting and instead of spaces is displaying a capital "D". I figured it was a corrupt font, but I deleted and reinstalled the font and it works fine in other programs. The issue isn't 100%, either. Yesterday I switched to another font and then switched back to Fontin Sans, and it worked fine, for a time. I've been using this font for a while in a variety of projects without issue.
Besides that it works in other programs, another reason I suspect this isn't a specific issue with this font is that when I opened a couple web pages yesterday (NY Times and my company's own home page) much of the plain text was completely garbled (symbols and such, no recognizable words), and that certainly wasn't a Fontin Sans issue. The two things seem unrelated, but as they both started happening yesterday I wonder if they're connected. The web text-display issue seems to have gone away today, however, while the Fontin/ID issue remains.
I don't even know where to start on this one. I'm using CS3, Mac Pro Intel, OS 10.4. No updates in the past couple days on font managers or CS3.

Delete your font cache. Download a free font cache cleaner utility. I have font finagler which may or may not be free. Can't recall.
