Another G5 kernal panic on start-up post - but this one is different!

Hello all,
So, I purchased my g5 used, but I've had it for about three years now with no problems. Within the last few months, however, my G5 kernal panics on start-up about 25% of the time. Also, it has been freezing on wake-from-sleep, at one point about 75% of the time, but now the wake-from-sleep issue is at about 15%.
In May or so I installed some new Crucial memory.
In October I replaced the start-up drive from what I assume is the OEM Maxtar with a Seagate 250gb 7200.10. I removed a media HD from the 2nd HD slot and copied (using Disk Utlility) the OEM Maxtar drive to the new Seagate drive. At some point, I had copied the system folders to my media HD for back-up. When I installed the new Seagate, the computer would often boot to the media HD, even after selecting the Seagate as my start-up drive. However, despite being confused on several occasions, it always started up and never had a kernal panic - also, I didn't reset the PRAM and SMU until recently, so that might have solved that problem.
Until I installed Leopard. After installing 10.5 when it debuted, I started having frequent kernal panics on start-up and these wake-from-sleep problems. Both were more frequent then they are now, and sometimes I can go a week without either of these problems occuring.
The kernel panic that I get on start-up reads something to the effect of "Cannot find driver for this unit (Powermac 7,3)." When it KPs on wake, it points to the "ATA driver."
I have reset the SMU, but I have not tried reseating the RAM. I have run the RAM diagnostic . . . although I have only had the patience to get through one iteration.
I have repaired permissions and verified the disk from the Leopard install DVD.
Any ideas? Is it the HD? I get the feeling that the HD is not powering up when it needs to to provide the computer with the OS on power-up and wake. Perhaps Tiger was able to deal with this and with for it to get going, or the move to Leopard happened so close to the wiping of the OS from the media HD that I didn't notice it. But the thing that kills me is that it does not happen all the time!
Thanks!
CMF

The optical drive? Isn't that odd? It's the OEM Superdrive, as far as I know. Maybe there is a firmware update for it I'm missing? Here's the stats:
Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-117D
Revision: B705
Also, I've included the KP data for the wake-from-sleep KPS:

  • Recurring kernal panic on start up screen.

The problem started after I downloaded the latest iTunes update and selected automatically restart after download. I have tried starting in safe mode and it just keeps the little grey spinning wheel on the white screen for ages. I have manually restarted it and turntable it off at the mains and left it for a while but nothing has helped.
I have a 27" iMac Intel 2009 (I think), it was part of the faulty batch that were recalled to have the hard drive replaced. Apple did replace the hard drive but after a while the odd kernal panic started to happen and now it won't even start up.
Am I missing a trick here? I feel like I have gone through the correct process of dealing with a kernal panic. Is there another way of dealing with this issue with out dragging it down to my local apple store?
    Many thanks,
    Max

Can you boot from your backup? (You have one, right?) Can you boot into the recovery partition? Can you boot from the original install disk? Do you have any utilities like Disk Warrior that come on a bootable CD?
In short, do you have anything other than the internal drive to boot from?

  • Leopard and kernal panic after starting up external hard drive

    Hi,
After upgrading to Leopard, everytime I turn on my external hard drive after my Powerbook G4 starts up, I get a kernal panic and it says that I need to shutdown. So I do and when it restarts the disk is mounted fine with no problems. Why would it have a kernal panic? I don't need to access the external all the time so I don't need to have it on. What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Mary

    Hi,
The drive is connected via firewire through the back of my Apple Cinema Display firewire hub. Out of curiosity, when I disconnect the drive from the ACD hub and connect it directly to my Powerbook Firewire connection, I found that I did not get a kernel panic when I turn on the drive. It mounts without a problem. It may be the ACD firewire connection.
This is the panic log that I get.

  • Trying to find source of Macbook Pro Retina kernal panics (system report in post)

My Macbook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion has at least one kernal panic a day. Sometimes the wallpaper resets to default. It only happens while it's asleep and I have only ever once caught it on the error screen (meaning it's not happening as I wake it up but rather while the screen is off). I have had my computer and this problem for a while so I finally tried taking it to Apple to resolve the problem. It's been confirmed twice not to be a hardware problem and I have had the entire logic board replaced.
All other threads seem to say the problem is bluetooth but I never use bluetooth and it is always off. I DID do a full system reset and the problem went away but restoring the computer from time machine brought it back after a couple days. Is there any way of figuring out what software is causing the problem? Is there a way to use time machine to migrate applications and files to a reset computer instead of doing a full system recover and would that possibly fix the problem?
I would like to avoid updating to the newest OS if possible for reasons.

  • What the heck is a "Kernal panic" and how can I fix this?

Lately, several of my partitions (external firewire) running OS 10.3.9 have crashed and are no longer bootable. one partition crashed upon being turned on, and said that there was 'no driver for powerbook 6, 5' and 'kernal stopping here...' I started up from a different partition, and installed the latest security update, and that repaired my kernal, but now for some reason, I am not an 'administrator,' but I am the only user of this computer. any suggestions?
someone had this happen in class, and I found out that the problem that I was experiencing was called a 'kernal panic,' and now I want to know why this happens, how to prevent this from happening, and the best software tool to check the health of my system folder. anyone got any suggestions?
I'm considering installing a clean version of OS 10.3.3, and updating to 10.3.9, but if there is a faster way to fix this, then I'm all ears! thanks!

    Patddfan:
From your description of what is happening it does not sound like a kernel panic. See What’s a kernel panic. In terms of what to do see: Resolving Kernel Panics
I suspect that your HDD is in serious need of maintenance. Here's what I would do:
    1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. In the left panel select your HDD (manufacturer ID), and in the main panel select the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    2. Boot from your install disk. Go to the Installer menu and launch Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left panel and First Aid in main panel. Click Repair Disk. If DU reports disk needs no repair quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors, click Repair again, and again until DU reports the disk is repaired. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    3. Download MacJanitor and run all the procedures, the follow regular schedule.
    4. Take a look at Gulliver's article Mac OS X System Maintenance and implement procedures.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Kernal Panic on Start Up

    Hello
My Mac Pro (2008 model, running Leopard) will get as far as the Apple Logo/Spinning Clock screen and after 20 seconds gives me the "Restart your Mac" dialogue box.  I've tried resetting PRAM, removing power cables etc, safe mode, and also booting from the original install disc.  The install disc makes no difference - the Mac Pro hangs at exactly the same point.
Removing the power cable, I opened up the Mac Pro to have a look inside.  I'm not technical at all, so wasn't expecting to spot anything!  But after a few seconds I noticed a single red light flash once from the Memory Card / RAM area.  It actually made me jump as I wasn't expecting anything to flash with the power disconnected!  Anyway, I waited and waited to see if it flashed again, but it didn't - so not precisely sure what/where it flashed.
I'm booked to go to the Apple Store on Thursday morning, but if there are any simple solutions worth trying then any helped would be massively appreciated as it might help me get up and running sooner, plus it'll save me a fortune in taxi fares to/from the Apple Store!!
    Thanks,
    Caroline

Should just add... the initial problem was that the screen froze/glitched while one of the Mac screensavers was playing.  The screen then kept switching on and off.  I pressed the eject button to eject a CD and the eject icon appeared over the glitched screensaver image.  Then I rebooted etc.

  • Kernal panic - log mentions firewire repeatedly but no firewire device

    Hi Guys,
Any help appreciated with this. Firstly although my profile states leopard+ macpro this relates to a G5 running 10.4.11. We had a kernel panic earlier on a machine that has seemed buggy over the last few days (in spite of running Applejack). Weirdly the log mentions firewire repeatedly in spite of no device being mounted (there is a drive plugged in but not mounted + powered off). Ran verify disk + repaired permissions (nothing needed repairing) afterwards. Any ideas? Thank you.

The KP does look Firewire connected; so unplug it.
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
If you suspect RAM,look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Start New Post Maybe my problem is different

My Shuffle is recognized when I connect to my Mac. It seems to update and the Shuffle flashes Red a couple times.
However, It does not go to Green like it used to to indicate it is charging. I have even hooked it to the Power Outlet adapter and still no charging or charged light.
Yesterday I was able to use it, but noticed that there was no "On light" ........
    What's my problem? Any ideas?
    Thank you!

The optical drive? Isn't that odd? It's the OEM Superdrive, as far as I know. Maybe there is a firmware update for it I'm missing? Here's the stats:

  • Another Dynamic header question, but this one is tricky. help!

I have a prompt that has values like
    Version1
    Version2
    Version3
Depending on the version selected, two general value columns called VALUE1 and VALUE2 need to have their headers changed.
for example, if Version1 is selected then Value1 column heading should be Budget and Value2 heading should be Forecast.
How can i achieve this? It seems a repository variable will not work. Also, I tried using one prompt based on another prompt but got stuck.

    You can do this
prompt based on other prompt and writing a case statement
Create a pv for pmt1 and write a case statement for  prompt2 passing the variable from first prompt
case when '@{pv1}'='version1; then 'budget'... to the second pmt(pv2)
once done, on the dashboard page edit the dashboard properties and we can put this second pmt as a dashboard filter and save the dashboard page
now on the report column header use '@{pv2}' .Thats it.
It should work.I have done this already!!
    Good luck.

  • Computer recognizes my ipod but the driver isn't there to support it. I have the same problem with another Ipod touch where there is no driver for windows but this one Does show up on itunes.

I believe what I must do is install a driver but I don't know where the drivers are indexed at in apple. Itunes is up to date, and I am using the USB that came with the Ipod.

Have you tried the driver-related instructions in the following article, Hegel?

  • Kernal panics black and white text as well as regular KP screen

Bought a used Powerbook Alum 15" 1.5 mhz. Almost continually having kernal panics. Started out being just the regular ones, and could not trace it to anything special, so after DW said there were problems with the HD, installed a new one. Helped for a while, but they began again. Tried to do software update tonight and it kept killing and having KP. It's gotten so that a restart gives me a black screen and nothing else. Complete stall. After 4 or 5 tries, finally got a boot to finish. BTW, always got the processor bong, but nothing else. On a java update tonight, got the we are hanging KP. then another, which I copied in full.
KP tonight was all white text on black background, as follows. Sorry if I missed some caps:

I know this is a lot of stuff, that I know zero about, but does this mean anything to anyone? Can you suggest the next step I might take to track down the issue? TIA
    Melinda

Probably I can't be of too much help since I can't read panic logs, but here is an article on resolving kernel panics in general:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Have you tried reseating your RAM? I have heard that RAM can be a factor in kp's.
    Good luck!

    Hi,
The issues from the info looks more like a Graphics card issue rather than an iChat one. (the log is just telling you iChat was the "Front" app.)
Obviously Iihat does put extra demand on the graphics card.
Some of the Video production is pushed out that way - even more so if you use Backdrops or Effects.
    unloaded kexts:
    com.apple.iokit.IOUSBMassStorageClass          2.6.5 (addr 0x45aeb000, size 0x45056) - last unloaded 31284562896528
This bit is unusual but is most likely unrelated.
I would also try a PRAM reset first Shut down the computer. Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
If that does not imporve things I would try a SMC/PMU Reset

What look like links at the bottom expand to show you the Instructions for your particular Mac.
After that try a Safe boot
I presume you have Repaired Permission with the Mac's Disk Utility ?
Do you have a second Mac User Account on you computer to test iChat there ?
I have one in System Preferences > Accounts called "test" for purposes like this.
If you try and record with Quicktime X's Player Do you get the same issue ?

  • Powerbook won't wake up from sleep, trouble rebooting, kernal panic

    Hi,
My powerbook has recently been having some troubles. This started over the weekend and nothing major has changed recently. I added some new RAM months ago, but that was like in June maybe, and it was Samsung module which i think is what that line of powerbooks used originally. The computer had been exhibiting signs of sluggishness and slow operation which i was mostly attributing to a pretty full HD that was in need of some optimazation and maintenance (which i do semi-regularly with Tech Tool Pro).
So, when it goes to sleep, or when the lid gets closed, it won't wake back up. black screen and unresponsive to any keys, though i can still hear the fans and some HD spinning noises inside. So, this forces me to force shutdown by holding the power key until i hear the machine turn off. Then reboot. When re-booting i have been getting a combination of kernal panics and freezes on startup, just hanging with a blue screen and a spinning startup indicator.
I can boot with no problem from an external Firewire drive. So i've run a ful Tech Tool sweep of the machine, optimized the HD and all that. Then, all is well UNTIL it goes to sleep again and then i'm back in the same cycle.
    Any thoughts or advice here?

Yeah. I guess i am going to take it in this week. in the meantime though, i wonder if anyone can translate this panic.log entry from another round of kernal panics that i just went through this morning. I had about 4 or 5 of them in a row after trying to reset my PRAM to try and fix an issue with my external isight.
