(Another) iMac G3 black screen issue

All right, I'm sure questions about the CRT going black are pretty common, but I've scoured the net for fixes and am still coming up blank. Here's the problem...
Just bought a used iMac G3, slot loader. I think it's one of the early ones, as there's no VGA port in the back under the pop-off plate to use a second monitor. The guy I bought it from knew nothing about its history other than "the screen doesn't work".
Took it home, turned it on. The power light goes on, the hard drive spins, the screen makes those CRT sounds like it's going to come on, but it's completely black. So, I hit the forums and have tried the following solutions:
1. Reset the PRAM.
2. Replaced the PRAM battery with a new one.
3. Remove the memory, then battery, then pressed the PMU button (once), waited, replaced the battery, then memory.
4. Inserted an OS 9 CD, held down C during startup. Heard it spin around, didn't do much else.
5. Gone into Firmware mode, reset the NVRAM.
6. Let it boot up, waited till the hard drive stopped spinning, pressed the power button to try to put it to sleep. Nothing happened.
7. Held the button on the side down while restarting. That may have been a bad idea, I dunno, but I was running out of things to do and figured it's probably already fried anyway. It beeped in acknowledgement, but no other changes.
Any other ideas? I've hit all the places I can think of. I don't care much about saving anything on the HD -- I have no idea what's on it anyway -- but I'd like to get this running as it's intended to be used for a non-profit. As always, I'd like to make spending cash on a replacement part a final option; it seems people jump to that conclusion prematurely pretty often but it may be about that time...
Last thing. If this thing is definitely dead, are there any parts inside worth salvaging? Maybe I can gut it and have a nice Macquarium. Any links to a good page on how to safely discharge the CRT and take this baby apart?
Thanks in advance for any tips.
iMac G3 (slot, 350?)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I actually successfully took one of these iMac G3's completely apart and replaced the entire CRT component, leaving all other parts inside. The CRT in my machine did work before I replaced it, but it had a " dark shadow" which grew worse as time went on (making it hard to see), so I decided to replace it with a newer one. What I recommend you do is try one last thing because you just bought it. There are "hidden" CRT controls for the brightness and contrast inside of the bottom case (two plastic knobs). From what I am reading, it sounds like the entire CRT is bad and will not power on/function properly, but you can try to adjust the brightness/contrast anyway just to be sure. The fact that you hear the CRT sounds makes me think it is possible the brightness/contrast are all the way down, which would be why you only see a black screen when powered up. To locate these knobs follow the instructions below:
1) After completely unplugged, place your iMac G3 upside down on a soft surface (such as a bed).
2) Using a screwdriver, remove the two screws located near the front end of the machine.
3) After removed, pull upward and remove the plastic housing.
4) Look for two black knobs on the sides of the machine and plug in the power cord.
5) After you hear the chime, turn the knobs back and forth to try to get a picture.
6) If you do not see a picture, your CRT or (parts that connect to it) are probably broken.
7) Remove the power cord.
8) Replace the bottom plastic housing and screw it back together.
I hope this helps you solve this issue you are having. If it does not work out, I will think of something else. Also, do you hear the start up chime and does the power light always remain lit green the entire time the machine is powered on?

  • The Windows 7 Black Screen Issue

I am putting in Bootcamp with a Windows 7 install. I checked these forums and made sure I had all my prep work done.
I referenced article TS3173 and downloaded the neccessary drivers for 7, formatted a 16GB SD Card as FAT Bootable and copied the drivers and autounattend.xml files onto the root of the drive.
THe installation as going as planned but at the end I'm still ending up with a black screen. Windows is installed ok but on the restart after" Preparing for FIrst Use" comes up the screen goes black.
Obviously, the drivers are not being installed from the SD card, I tried it on a USB External driver as well. Am I missing something here? I read every post I could find on it and I can't see where I am doing anything incorrectly.
    Thanks
    Tom

You don't need Paragon or another NTFS driver. That may work (I've used it, but I was using a full hard drive anyway to begin with).

The Windows 7 installer does not include required graphics or Bluetooth drivers for this computer. To obtain the necessary drivers and resolve the issue, see this article (creating the SD card and drivers for the "black screen" issue).

  • Air 3.3 beta PC audio distortion / Air 3.1 / 3.2 Mac black screen issue

    Hi there,
I've recently released a large game coded in Flash Builder with Air (www.lonesurvivor.co.uk), and I used Air 3's captive runtime feature to bundle it for Mac and PC.
The initial build used Air 3.2 and for a large proportion of OSX users, there were no visuals at all, just sound and the game obviously working underneath.  This caused a very large support issue, and took several weeks to deal with, as well as having to maintain a seperate Projector version for those for whom the Air version wouldn't work.  I wish I had known that the game would fail on some Macs, but unfortunately the issue showed up on none of the ones tested.
I'm about to launch the updated build of the game which uses Air 3.3 beta 1, as it seems to fix the black screen issue for all those who experienced it.  I was very happy that Adobe have managed to iron this out, even if there was no response to the bug I entered into bugbase.
The problem is, on a final test on XP SP2, the 3.3 beta version produces what appears to be filtered graphics... which is how the Mac version has always appeared, but the PC version of the game seemed to use what looked like nearest-neighbour sampling in Flash's fulllscreen upscaling, which looked good for the zoomed pixel art in this game.
This is a small cosmetic issue, but there is another one whhich is far more severe - the audio has become extremely distorted, and is now unlistenable.
So with 3.2 giving me no visual on Macs and 3.3 giving me unlistenable audio on PCs, I will now have to maintain two versions again.  I really would like to keep one project I can quickly make changes to, but the seperate problems in different platforms means I lose out on the great cross-platform functionality of Air.  I'm hoping this is a known issue, but I couldn't find it on google / bugbase / these forums.
Could these two issues be related - is hardware acceleration not working or something?  Somehow I think it is, because the XP test machine is quite old, and tended to fall over with the game running in software mode in a Flash projector.
I tried swapping out the Air 3.3 runtime for the previous 3.2 I shipped with, and editing the XML desciption to make sure it was set to use that and, sure enough, the game worked as it did before.  So there is definitely something up with the beta.  I'm just glad I caught this problem before I shipped as going to save me thousands of emails of support!
So I guess my question is - is this a known issue?  And if so, do you have any workarounds / or are Adobe working on a fix?

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the prompt response - I guess I should have tried the forums instead of the bugbase last time...  It really was a support nightmare!  Not least because I had to deal with the problem of saved games being wiped by over-zealous browsers on the backup Projector version I was supplying Mac customers with.
Fortunately the Mac Air 3.3 runtime works great.
Out of interest - there is still the difference in GPU scaling used between Mac and Windows though, which there always has been since it was introduced (is this a known issue btw?)
Which leads me to the 3.3 beta 2 - I tried it out last night, and while it corrected the blurry graphics (the scaling appeared nearest neighour again on XP), the audio suffered the same distortion.
In addition, I had several other XP / Vista / Win 7 users test out the build, and the user with XP SP3 also suffered the issue.
So I'm planning to ship the PC version with 3.1 as it worked well for the first release, and use 3.3 beta 1 for the Mac version.  Unfortunately I've run out of time and need to get it out there!
I'd definitely be interested in getting into the pre-release program.  I'll write you an email and send the builds of the game too.
    Cheers,
    Jasper

There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

  • And yet another black screen issue

As many others in this forum I suffer from the black screen problem when installing Windows 7 32 bit on my newly bought iMac OS 10.6.4. Will Apple please take care of this problem!

Apple has, in their tech notes, which can usually be found from Boot Camp Support page. I guess Boot Camp Assistant Help menu too.

  • Rather Unusual Black Screen Issue

    Hi all,
Can anyone help with this: I'm getting the black screen with the white "Play" arrow but only at one website that I can determine. I click the Play arrow and the arrow disappears but nothing happens. This is happening in IE v9, FireFox and Chrome (all latest versions). I've tried all sorts of settings combinations between the 3 browsers (as well as FP settings) and nothing works. I've tried to disable my AV and firewall. I've reinstalled the latest version of Flash Player.  I've played with the P2P settings. I can go anywhere else (including YouTube) and all videos are playing just fine. The issue "seems" to be isolated to just this one website: http://chat.foodlovers.com. Furthermore, if I remove the "chat" from the url, taking me out of the forums and to a different page on the site, the videos play fine, making me suspect that this is all related somehow to the "chat" in the url. Yet I can go to this site from another computer on the premise and the issue does not occur. I've been playing around with this for 2 days and I just can't seem to figure it out. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Being able to view the many videos on this site is an important part of using and benefiting from the forums, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Dell Precision M6500 Workstation
    OS: Windows7 64 bit / 16 GIG Ram
    Flash ActiveX Version: 11.0.1.152
    Flash Plug-in Version: 11.0.1.152
Sorry, cannot locate the Version numbers on the browsers but they are all latest versions.
Please let me know if any other info is needed to help diagnose.
    TIA,
    Barb

Late last night I gave it one more shot with reinstalling Flash Player. I reinstalled the 64 bit version, although I thought the one I'd previously downloaded and installed was for both 32/64 bit. I also installed a shockwave plugin. To tell you the truth I'm not certain what I actually installed or perhaps did with setting adjustments (in browsers and AV), but one of these seemed to resolve the issue and I'm able to view videos on this site in all browsers. I am curious as to what you're referring to regarding this site using "wmode=window". Is that a setting I have to be aware of? And yes, I think I did post the link incorrectly, my apologies.
Many thinks for all the support,

  • Occasional black screen issue during bootup

I sometimes get a black screen when I boot into Windows 7. For instance, when I hold down the option key, and I choose the Windows partition, I think it accepts the command, but once it does the usual routine of going black then showing a flashing white cursor (which means it has successfully booted into Windows) it sometimes stays at the black screen. Then I hear the chime like it's booted in and it's on the Windows desktop, but I can't do anything because of a complete black screen. So I have to do a hard shutdown, then do the process again, at which it starts booting into Windows properly.
This doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally. Once I'm in Windows, I feel perfectly safe. But when I even think of booting into Windows, I get the feeling that it just might not boot correctly.

Same here,I have a computer Lab with 25 iMacs and for no particular reason they sometimes hangup with a black screen and curser. Sometime I can boot to Win7 disk and do the repair your computer option and it will boot, do the same thing to another and it will not boot. Come back tomorrow and the one that would not boot is now working fine. I have also gotten to the command prompt and done the C: bootrec/fixboot and that might work one day and then it will not work the next. any ideas?

  • R9 270x 2gb Gaming Edition OC - Black Screen Issue

So I've had this card for almost a year and it was working fine until recently. The screen started going black while gaming and started happening faster and faster. The monitor essentially loses connection. I know that people have already posted about this exact problem, but I need some help. At first the problem appeared to be fixed when I unplugged my computer for a bit and then plugged it back in (I was just unplugging it to take the side panel off) but for some reason it fixed the problem. However just the other day the problem occurred again and I can't seem to fix it this time. I've tried 2 different monitors, 1 HDMI and 1 DVI, and so I know it's not that. I just downloaded 2 different drivers, one is amd_14.4)v78.zip and the other is AMD_13101_78_vga.zip are these going to help or just make the problem worse. I can't post all of the useful information right now but I know that I've got a AMD FX 6300 processor, 8gb of G.Skill RAM, and a MSi mb, running Windows 7 64bit. Again, sorry for the lack of information including BIOS and all that. I'll post that later but I really need some help. I have yet to try the card in a different computer, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to but at this point I'm pretty sure it's the card. Not sure why the problem is just starting to occur, I may have installed some drivers recently, I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

test the card in another machine to isolate the issue and to verify if the card is faulty
Well I can't really and I'm 98% sure it is indeed the card due to the fact that there have been a decent amount of people with the same problem. Some people believe it's a driver problem, which seems possible. It was fine for a bit but just today it happened again. So I'm not sure why the problem is so inconsistent.

  • IMac 2013 Black Screen

    iMac (late 2013) EFI Update 2.1 (8.7MB)
This update is recommended for iMac (late 2013) models.
This update addresses an issue which may cause a black screen to appear when installing Windows 7 or Windows 8 using Boot Camp Assistant if both an external optical drive and USB thumb drive are connected to the system.
This update also ensures that the system will boot by default into OS X after installation of Windows 8.
System Requirements: OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 (12E4022) or later"
After Update Boot Rom should be IM141.0118.B00 for 21.5" and IM142.0118.B00 for 27"

I downloaded this update and I'm getting a notice that this software is not supported by my system.  I have a new iMac 27" bought a month ago v10.8.5
I've been trying to install Windows 7 all day and have tried everything I've read on the internet so far and nothing has worked.  Then I found this update and thought this would do it but no luck
    What do I do now?

  • Can't fix fglrx/Xorg black screen issue, no matter what I try!

I've tried everything that I can think of or find online to fix this. Please help.
I'm getting what seems to be an oft-recurring issue where Xorg simply won't start when using the fglrx driver. It boots fine with VESA or Xfree86-ati, but using fglrx I just get a black screen that won't accept any input, although ssh'ing into the box while this is happening still works.
I've been reading forum posts for *days* now trying to get this to work. I've tried every combination of 12.4/12.6 drivers, Xorg 1.11/1.12 and modeset/nomodeset kernel parameters. I definitely do not have any radeon or other DRI modules compiled into my kernel. I have an HD4200, SLiM/Xfce4, and I'm using the proper catalyst-hd234k package. The fglrx module has been compiled for my kernel and added to my initramfs, and it loads at boot. lsmod reveals its presence and does *not* show 'radeon'. I have uninstalled every video driver aside from fglrx and Xfree86-vesa. Output does not seem to be going to HDMI instead. Switching consoles/typing blindly does not work, and I need to hold the power button for 5 seconds to shutdown. I've run aticonfig --initial and tried aticonfig --acpi-services=off, too.
I've tried *all* the different tweaks that I've found to try to make a working xorg.conf, but here's what I'm trying to use now:

fglrxinfo while running Xorg without an xorg.conf gives me this:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 135 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12
And in a console it tells me that it can't open display(null)... all of which I suspect is expected behaviour when the driver is not actually in use. I just wish something would tell me what's actually *wrong*, here, instead of just expecting me to magically figure out exactly the right configuration that will actually let me use fglrx.
I... I just want to be able to play minecraft. :`(

    I'm sure you've tried reading https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084
    and http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Configuring
    and I'm sure you've done
    aticonfig --initial
I had to use https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … leshooting, specifically the part about disabling EXAPixmaps to make my card work.
What model is your ATI card? that would help. A LOT of ATI cards were dropped from proprietary support with the Catalyst driver.

  • UIImagePickerController Custom Overlay Black Screen issue while using Video trimming controller

    Hello Everyone ,
I have problem while opening camera in recording mode using UIImagePicker Controller with custom overlay and it should open first time properly .But when i push to next view controller and return back again to open camera at that time camera displays black screen for few time.
The Logic in the inside view controller is for VideoTrimming . For video trimming i have used "SAVideoRangeSlider" controll. SAVideoRange Silder perform task to get all thumbnail images from video which i have assign . It uses AVAsset  image generator class provided by apple to get image frames from videos and it runs in background using its handler method.
    Handler Method ::
    [self.imageGenerator generateCGImagesAsynchronouslyForTimes:times
completionHandler:^(CMTime requestedTime, CGImageRef image, CMTime actualTime,
                                                                      AVAssetImageGeneratorResult result, NSError *error) {
I have nilling all the objects related to image generator class when i came back to Camera screen. still issues of black screen occur while opening camera.
This issue occur in ios7 but not in ios6.
Can anyone have any idea about this ...Please relply me ASAP.

  • GS60 Ghost Pro 2PE Black screen issue

    Hi,
After almost 2 months of usage one day the laptop screen started going black after logging in but the backlight is working (system still running fine, even works with HDMI) and it kept doing so at random times after desktop loads. I am writing this on HDMI because the display is not usable. Sometimes the issue would go away for some days then it starts again.
Removing/reinstalling drivers and even reinstalling OS did not help, safe mode also has the problem and even I tried win 7 installation which gives black screen at setup stage. I almost tried anything software related but no lock, I also updated the bios.
Unfortunately MSI service is far and it is costly for me to get there. Is it a common issue among this model?
This guy has the same problem(see video), please read his first comment:
I used MSI online support and they told me to update the EC but part of the process says remove the battery! How can I remove it while this model's battery is embedded inside it and is no removable? EC update did not help too.
    Thanks

I sent it to RMA, they could not identify the issue ... now after 20 days they say their gonna send a new one. They got some money from me because they said they only had the SSD version available, while mine did not have to SSDs.  This Iranian distributor called Matrix is very disappointing.
I am really worried that it might happen again with the new GS60 too. It was my first experience with MSI and it was not a good one

  • Yoshmite loading my iMAC with black screen.

    Hi,
i have two iMacs and I've downloaded yoshmite on both of them. However, one iMAC loads with a white screen with apple logo and one screen loads up with a black screen and apple logo, yet they both have yoshmite. is this normal?

Ok, riddle solved: multiple hardware failure. It couldn't be fixed, so apple called immediatly and offered a new imac, new model as well, so I'm happy (if the new one works ). Must have been quite a tricky case, but I can't complain as i got a really good support during the time.
Hopefully the new one will arrive within the next week.

  • Imac crashes black screen

Imac Crashes leaving black screen, need to turn off and on again to remedy.... quite sporadic in any programme - can anyone help?

The fans may not be the cause of the problem but it's definitely related. Now I'm running the hardware monitor every time I play D3 and it always warns me that the CPU fans is spinning up shortly before the crash, which may then occur within seconds or at most 2-3 minutes when I stay in fullscreen. I can't remember experiencing a crash after I went back to windowed mode after the alarm, but I also haven't pushed it much. Also, the temperatures reported really don't look awful at all, nothing exceeds 80°C, there's no sudden surge.
Interestingly, the computer actually keeps running after the screen goes black (but D3 is definitely out), and only when I press cmd-alt-esc does the whole system go completely down (looping sound).
I've checked the logs and couldn't find anything really significant, then again I may not know what to look for. The only suspicious entries at more or less exactly the time of the crash (although I can't tell whether it's when D3 crashes, or the whole computer) are the following in kernel.log:
    12-07-14 2:57:48.000 PM kernel: ** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **
12-07-14 2:57:48.000 PM kernel: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
    12-07-14 2:57:48.000 PM kernel: 0x00006740
This is followed by 544 lines similar to the last one with various hex addresses over five seconds, although after line 436 only 0x00000000's are reported. The line just after that is at the time when I restart the computer and says
Jul 14 15:00:36 localhost kernel[0]: PMAP: PCID enabled
system.log doesn't report anything in this time frame, there's no crash report for D3 in CrashReporter... Is there anything else I could check?

  • Killer NIC with ASUS R9 290 black screen issues

    Hi there,
I've just set up a gaming system with the B85-G43 Gaming board and an ASUS R9 290 (oc r9290-dc2oc-4gd5) and I've stumbled across a strange problem. Within 5 minutes I get a black screen and the only way to get out of it is to reset my computer. It freezes, but doesn't stop working immediately.
So... I've been testing with W7, W8 and W8.1 and no difference. Until... I shut down my network card and no black screens anymore. Also, when I disable my R9 290 in the device manager there are also no black screens anymore. So I should search it in the combination. I've installed all the newest drivers, but no luck.
Has anyone come across the same issue and how did you solve this? I'm getting really frustrated about it...
    Thanks for your help guys!

Quote from: Nichrome on 20-January-15, 19:56:04
There is no chance this will work together.
    Radeon R9-290   - 31A and a 550W psu minimum
Test stronger power supply. And that might be why you also have issues with other things like in this case, Killer NIC
Ok I've tested your suggestion and replaced the PSU with a cooler master G750M 750 Watt.
Exactly the same problem. I keep getting black screens as soon as I log into windows and the radeon drivers are kicking in. When i disable the radeon drivers: no black screens at all. As soon as i re-enable them: black screen...
Anyone have any other suggestions. Currently I've RMA'd my Asus R9 290. Maybe it'll help but I don't have any confidence....
    Thanks!
