Another iphone 4 update failure story
I have found so many other posts where people are having the same issue and none of the suggestions has worked or made any difference.
Just thought I'd add my two pennies worth...
First of all my phone has version 4.2.1 OS. (GSM)
I had the phone activated at a Apple reseller as Carphone whorehouse didn't do it when I purchased the phone, and I couldn't install the drivers
initially on my pc as I have a useless Dell laptop with various issues.
So after managing to do several Windows updates my pc now recognises the phone - I de-authorised all pc's and re-authorised this one as it's my main pc.
However, all the apps I have installed on the phone were downloaded directly to the phone via the I-store. This seems to confuse the i-tunes software as I cannot transfer them from the phone to i-tunes.
If I try to sync I get the all too familiar permissioning error "you are not authorised for them on this computer"! This has also meant that I now cannot use the apps on the phone as the sync seems to have blocked them - thanks Apple!
The only apps I can get to work are the ones I manually have to find again through the useless search option in i-tunes and re-download.
Some of which aren't free any more so I can't get them re-installed unless I pay for them - brilliant!
I have tried the 'fix' to remove the user account control, which I didn't think would make a difference and I was right.
De-authorising and re-authorising makes no difference, neither does downloading another free app.
I have tried to update the operating system to IOS5 but that fails to download, so I downloaded the stupid software package and when I run that it just opens up i-tunes and attempts to download the software again!
Not many options left, I will try a couple of other things, but not really feeling very optimistic...
just because it says buy, if you already bought it it will come up with a bubble saying, already purchased..hit ok to download. and as far as syncing to itunes...syncing does not download the apps from phone to itunes, you have to go to the store tab at top of itunes and go to "sign in" then go to file tab and click "transfer purchases from XXXXX (will be a name here) phone", then and only then will your apps appear on the apps tab under your phone listing.
I found this out the hard way also.
Not sure on your IOS 5 update issues, i guess i am just lucky to have had zero issues other than my own mistakes with apps. 2 for 2 upgraded, zero issues.

I have the same problem. With the addition that the contact effort times out with the error message "There was a problem while fetching software for the iPhone unit "XXX". Could not establish a network connection."
I never had any problems with updating my iPhone before and I have been doing it regularly since mid 2008...
The error message is actually in Swedish although I have tried to translate it above. The exact wording is: "Problem uppstod vid hämtningen av programvara för iPhone-enheten "XXX". Det gick inte att upprätta en nätverksanslutning."

(The above relates to my efforts to update my iPhone 4 from iOS version 5.0.1 to the latest version, i.e. 5.1. Through iTunes with a cord. I have also tried to do the update wirelessly from iCloud but it only gives me a similar error message: "Software update failed. An error occured when fetching "iOS 5.1"" or actually in Swedish: "Programuppdatering misslyckades. Ett fel inträffade vid hämtning av "iOS 5.1".") -
Has anyone else had issues with phone network being unavailable on iPhone 4 since updating to iOS 5.0.1? My iPhone 4 is continually searching for a network and does not find AT&T, my provider. I swapped SIM cards with another iPhone 4 running ios 4 and established this is a device problem, not a SIM card problem.
Does the device get any signal?
Sounds like the device may have had a hardware failure. If it is out of warranty, the only option is the Out of Warranty replacement.
AppleCare is only an option if it is still under the original warranty. -

Sorry downgrading isn't supported by apple.
You can try settings - general - reset - reset network settings.

What is going on??? Since I updated my iPhone 4s to iOS 6 all messages that are sent to my phone from another iPhone user also get sent to my daughters iPhone 4. And she can receive my text but cannot reply to me.

You should never lose contacts under any circumstances.
Although contacts are included with the iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer where such important data should be available with or without an iPhone or any cell phone. Not a good idea to depend on a cell phone for such important data which can be lost or stolen or damaged beyond repair.
In addition, there are a number of free email accounts that support syncing contacts over the air including an iCloud account, Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail.
If you are not syncing contacts over the air with an iCloud account and not backing up your iPhone wirelessly with your iCloud account, your iPhone's backup is being updated by iTunes on your computer which is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
With Windoze, contacts can be synced with Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 along with syncing calendar events, notes, and reminders, or with the address book app used by Outlook Express and by Windows Mail called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only. With a Mac, contacts can be synced with the Address Book app. This is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
If the supported address book app on your computer is not used and has no contacts available, before the first sync for this data enter one contact in the supported address book app on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select. -
Why did apple make this new update so difficult and inconvenient? I will probably never get another iphone because of this update. I am not happy at all.

I did this update just the way I've always done updates and had exactly the same problems: none. Unless you tell us what difficulties you had/are having, we can't really comment knowledgeably.

I updated my 4S iPhone and now I am getting all the texts from another iPhone on my plan. What do I need to do?
I'm not completely clear on the GSM / LTE network frequencies in US vs Argentina, but I do know that cross-compatibility can be an issue when buying from one country and using in another. Apple products in particular have this problem. What this sounds like to me is that the phone is not compatible with Argentinian networks; or your friend had an AT&T phone and jail-broke it. This is against the end user licensing agreement, and when the phone is next updated is likely to jam the phone.

Since updating to the ios7 I can't receive picture on a text from another iPhone any thoughts. It says it's downloading but never does
I'm having the same problem. I have an iPhone 5 and am running iOS 7.
MMS is on, and I can send pictures successfully. But when I receive them, the photo shows up for a split second before it becomes a downloading icon which never changes.
Can anyone help? -

Can I update another iPhone 3G? Meaning it is my friends iPhone who is not linked with my computer and I just want to install the 3.0 update...will this erase any of his apps/settings/contacts?

hi, i did the new software update on my phone today but there is another iphone thats connnected to the same computer i now have all their bank details coming up then when i have changed them it brings up a completely different email address to mine it has now put every single photo that is on my computer onto my phone. can anybody help?
i called apple and they are sending me snow leopard so i should, *fingers crossed, be able to run the newer version of itunes. we'll find out for sure in a few days when it arrives

Another update failure and restore
An observation after another updater failure.
Do NOT update on a shared USB port. I have a USB dongle to let several USB devices be on one port. This is not normally not t a problem with syncing, but this will not work with iPad OS update.
Plug iPad directly into a USB port or it will probably fail. This is probably the same reason you can't plug into a keyboard USB port as not enough power to run the operation.Apple recommends the same when syncing as well.

I have deleted my photos but have icloud. when i log into icloud it doesnt give me an option to view these photos at all. my photo stream is only showing photos from another iphone in the house. i am unsure if i do a restore from back up if this will work. i really dont want to lose these photos but i am very unsure of what to do to resolve. can anyone please help?
thank youIf you had Photo Stream enabled with your iCloud account settings on the iPhone, photos in the Camera Roll should have been transferred to your photo steam automatically when the iPhone was connected to an available wi-fi network.
Your photo stream is not available when logging in with your iCloud account with a browser on a computer.
Why were the photos in the Camera Roll deleted?
Photos/videos in the camera roll are included with your iPhones backup. If your iPhone's backup has not been updated since the photos were deleted from the camera roll, you can try restoring your iPhone from the backup. -
The issue: Outlook to iPhone sync failure – Sync suddenly stopped working for calendar events but continued for contacts and notes. Finally Fixed!!!

The cause: It is now clear what caused this problem. For years I had several “all-day” events in my Outlook calendar (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.). In May 2012 I decided to make some of them one hour events so I could add alerts to remind me of the event. I did this by dragging them in Outlook to the time I wanted and expanding them to the time slot desired and then adding the alarm.
The symptom: Syncing stopped working for the calendar but continued working for contacts and notes. I didn’t realize sync was failing until months later when I missed two very important phone calls, so when I noticed it the cause was not obvious.
The failed attempts: I’m head of a software firm and my calendar sync is a crucial to my business life so I took this on with a vengeance. From a quick look at events in Outlook and the iPhone I could see that the problem started in May 2012. Events before May were in both Outlook and the iPhone but events after May were only one or the other. Unfortunately I had changed several other things at the same time relating to other events so again the cause was not obvious. MANY calls with AppleCare proved them incompetent so my internal IT guys assisted trying many things. We tried a huge number of calendar changes and several versions of iTunes, iPhone OS and Office as well as both iPhone 4 and 5, all without success.
The fix: After 18 months of frustration, MANY hundreds of $ expense and MANY hours of wasted time I saw a blog that had a calendar sync problem and it indicated all day events were related. I changed the display of the Outlook calendar to the list view, added columns so I could see “all day” event check marks as well as times of events, sorted on the “all day” event column to move them to the top, and for all events that were “all day” events AND had a start and end time, I removed recurrence and then added the annual recurrence back…
After I fixed all events that had BOTH “all day” set and had a start/end time, I tried another sync. It synced for the first time in 18 months!
Problem occurred May 2012 – fixed Nov 2013Hi, to remove dummy '_ModGrp' entries, rather than crashing the 'Suppr' key on your keyboard, you can use this basic VBA macro (launched for instance from Excel).
It will recursively remove all '_ModGrp...' folders
