Another iPhone 5 wifi issue I guess.

I've seen the issue many are having not being able to connect to wifi, or connect and still getting no usage out if it. My issue is a little different. I can connect, but the range of my wifi is noticeably shorter for some reason. I'm getting less bars in the same locations of my house, and just dropping wifi in these locations where I never had any issue before. Also my iPhone 5 is significantly slower on on my wifi, versus my iPhone 4 on the same wifi. I'll include a video I put on YouTube to show how much. Downloading the same app, in the same place, on the same wifi... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfmoHrzjCWU .... This is just 1 test. I did about 10 in total,  6 YouTube video races, and 4 app download races. My iPhone 4 won them all, most by a lanslide like in the video.
I've commented on the other wifi issue post. But I didn't really see anybody else reporting this kind of issue. I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or maybe you have a 4s or 4 and you can check yourself and let me know. Thanks :)

I think this is interesting because even if all the people who are having connection issues, do finally get connected to wifi. Are they then gonna have this issue? Maybe not even notice it, atleast for a little bit. Then it becomes super annoying!!

    Hey there Gordo456,
It sounds like you are not able to join your Wi-Fi network with the correct password on 1 out of many devices. I recommend the troubleshooting from the article named:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    Restart your iOS device.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
If that troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, I would next try these steps from further down the article:
Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network
Verify that you're attempting to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Make sure you're entering your Wi-Fi password correctly. Passwords may be case sensitive and may contain numbers or special characters.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Yet another iPhone WiFi thread - cannot connect to some OPEN networks

I make no apologies in starting another thread about iPhone WiFi connectivity. Judging by the number of references to WiFi issues in this forum, as well as on the Internet generally, this is a big issue with many users and yet there seems very little acknowledgement by Apple that there is problem.
In my case I have a first generation iPhone which works well on most WiFi networks, both open and closed, including my secured network at home, but cannot connect properly with some open networks. I have had this problem while using 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1 firmware.
Sometimes I get the "Cannot Connect ..." message and sometimes I am able to connect and obtain a good signal and see an IP Address and a Subnet mask, but no Router or DNS address.
I'll repeat that I talking about open networks, so there is no password issue. In one local cafe, I am unable to connect to a network that I used to be able to connect to routinely. I have talked to the owner, who is another Mac and iPhone user and he assures me that he has not changed any router settings.
Can anyone offer any suggestions beyond the usual re-setting and re-booting options? Is there something about iPhone MAC addresses or the WiFi signal that certain routers don't like?
    Simon

This is not a solution to your problems but:
1- Expecting someone from Apple to respond here is a vain hope. This is a discussion forum for users and you can only expect responses from users. Talk to Apple tech support if you want a response from them.
2- I saw an item on an iPhone blog page somewhere yesterday saying that Apple was now replacing iPhones with this issue if you took it to an Apple store. Don't know if it's true but it also had a workaround that you could use for your own home network if you were having problems—and I am—and that workaround basically worked for me.
I turned wi-fi off on the phone and opened Airport Utility on my iMac. I turned wi-fi security OFF and then tried to connect. I actually got a connection straight away, and I noted down the IP addresses and subnet mask data from the DHCP screen in the iPhone's wi-fi network info screen. I then restored wi-fi security on my iMac. Of course that restarts the router and I lost my connection and when it started up again, the IP addresses had changed but the subnet mask had not. I swapped to the Static screen instead of the DHCP screen and edited all 3 IP addresses. That got me my connection back and it has continued to work throughout today. That's the best result I've had so far.
It seems to me that my iPhone has problems picking up the network data from my home network and I don't know why that is. I was at a friend's last night and tried to connect to his system and it connected straight away. I assume there's something about my settings which is problematic but I don't know what it is but at least now I have a workaround.
It's possible that something similar is going on for you with the public networks you're having problems with but, unfortunately, the workaround I tried won't work for you in a public network so that's probably not much help.
You could try taking your phone to an Apple Store and seeing if they exchange it. The blog I read suggested the magic words were "hardware problem". In my case I don't think it's a hardware problem but it may be in yours.

  • Iphone wifi issue.

Hi, I have an iphone 3gs white 32 gb bought in india. I have issues with the wifi. the phone is able to connect to wifi but if locked for 2 minutes,it loses the cellular network as well as wifi and finds it again. Then the wifi is unable to locate the wifi signal but the cellular network comes back again. If i restart the phone then i can see the wifi but then again i can be connected to it till the time i dont lock it. what is the issue here? and can it be fixed? Is there a problem with the battery. Or this has to do with the modem firmware.
Note : 2 mins or max 5 mins after i lock my phone this happens. If i keep my phone unlocked for 10 hr connected to wifi, the wifi wont be lost. the phone stays connected. it seems when the phone gets locked, iphone tends to make wifi go to sleep to conserve battery but when unlocked the wifi goes out of sleep and connects again. My wifi after sleep doesnt connect. infact it doesnt locate the wifi signal and keeps searching with that circle rotating continuously.
Pls help. Restore done, reset done, updated, not jailbroken, out of warranty. Perfect condition.

Does it work on other wifi networks or on 3G because if not or if you Don't know then likely wifi is not the issue

  • Iphone wifi issues & edge

alright, here is whats going on: the iphone is connected to a wifi signal but doesn't have a regular cell signal so it cant use wifi. i try to use safari or youtube or any other internet app but it says that it couldnt connect using edge. shouldnt it be trying to use the wifi signal which is full bars? is there something i have o do inside the wifi preferences like dealing with the ip address or the http proxy? thanks for all the help

Try removing the SIM card and see if you can connect via Wifi. I get the same message, but then WiFi connects with no issues.

  • Another iphone wifi question

I set up my iphone to connect over wifi. It won't connect to youtube or the internet except for Google. I can update weather and access the router settings through the phone. It will still connect over edge. Any solutions to this problem?

I found the answer in another post. I have a Belkin router and this is what I did and got it to work:
Now go to the WiFi settings in your iPhone and under your network press "Static."
In the IP address put 192.168.2.50
The Subnet Mask should read 255.255.255.0
    The Router should read 192.168.2.1
    In the DNS put 4.2.2.2
    Thanks for replying.

  • IPhone wifi issues need HELP ASAP

Hi, my iPhone's wifi is super slow. I tried out the speed test app on both my iMac and iPhone and I got 10.18 Mbps download and 3.08 Mbps upload; on my iPhone I got 0.98 Mbps download and 0.15 Mbps upload. I tested them from the same spot and got these results using speediest.net . Why is it dramatically slower on my phone? Is there a way to make the wifi faster on my phone?? Thanks for those of you reading this and helping me out!!

No i only have 1 but the speed on my mac is dramatically faster then my phone and i tested both on the same network and the same spot and iphone was super slow. Yes i already reset my network settings and still got under 1Mbps. Any other suggestions i should try?

  • Yet another Macbook wifi issue. looses connection when uploading and downld

I've been having issues with wifi on my Macbook since I bought it. I've finally narrowed down the issue.
If I'm doing two things at once, the macbook loses connection. For example, if I'm uploading a large file to my server, say 500mb and I try to download a file off the internet at the same time, the connection breaks. It still shows I have a full connection but I can no longer brows the internet and the upload to my server fails.
Anyone else find this to be the case?

I've had an original MBair and a 2011 air on wireless without issues.  Look at System Preferences > Network > Wi-fi > Advanced.. button > Wi-Fi tab >  Clean out the network list to just the ones you use and drag them to the top.  Look for other setting that may have changed from the default in other tabs.

  • IPhone wifi router conflict issue!

Something has gone awry somewhere, help!
My set up at home is thus.
One Ethernet router to which two PCs and one MacBook are hard connected, plus one wifi router connected to the Ethernet router, to which my iPhone connects to.
It has worked fine since I installed the wifi router.
This weekend, me and my other half have been away. I think it may also be the first time (but I don't recall exactly) that my iPhone has been turned off fully since I put the wifi router.
Anyway, we came back from our weekend away.
Other half put all the computers (well, his and mine) on, and the routers both come on too. His internets and mine were working. I had a bath then turned the iPhone wifi on and this, for some reason suddenly knocked his PC offline with the message:
    "Windows-System error
There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network"
Now I'm not an expert but I assume this to mean two computers are attempting to sit on the same IP (I thought maybe the iPhone's wifi reset to router 192.168.1.1 - that's the IP it's telling me the connection is on.)
However his PC is almost definitely on .0.2 or .0.1 not 1.1 so I don't know why there's a conflict.
I just plugged the wifi router back in with the iPhone's connection off. His PC's internet works again. Very very odd. HELP!
My PC doesn't seem to be affected (not tried the Macbook yet, I expect it to be fine). He tried a different port on the router for his PC ethernet cable, and that made no difference! Baffling!
I'm not sure my iPhone is using the wifi when OH's PC is connected either, despite it saying that it is connected - I'm almost 100% definite that it's using the GPRS signal I get here, it's running very slowly.
I have tried changing the IP Static address to another number, that doesn't seem to have helped.

One common cause of address conflicts is when a system comes back online after an extended period in stand-by or hibernate mode, especially if the system was previously part of another network (e.g. an iphone brought home). A conflict will promptly occur if the address the system was previously configured with is the same as one that's already in use on the network. These conflicts tend to work themselves out. IP conflicts tend to eventually work themselves out in DHCP environments because systems issues repeated requests for valid addresses. But since the process can take a while and doesn't always work as planned, one way to hasten a fix is by manually entering IPCONFIG /RELEASE and IPCONFIG /RENEW from a command prompt (restarting a system accomplishes the same thing but takes a lot longer).
If the conflict persists even after renewing the IP address, it may be because your system's been re-issued the same address it already had and another system on your network is the source of the problem. You can get a clue about the offender by checking the System Log within the Windows Event Viewer (which you can get to via Start|Control Panel| Administrative Tools|Event Viewer) and looking for a DHCP error entry. The entry will list a network address (actually a MAC address) which you can use to identify the conflicting device, either by running IPCONFIG / ALL on a Windows system or checking the label on the back or underside of a non-PC device. Performing a IPCONFIG release and renew or restarting the other device should set things right. If not, restarting your router should do the trick as it will reset the DHCP server and force all systems to request new IP addresses.
    1. Turn off everything on the network, ALL the machines and any other network device like network printers and NAS drives.
    2. Turn off the router and modem.
    3. Turn on the modem, wait for a steady data light.
    4. Turn on the router, wait two minutes.
    5. Turn on the network devices and computers, one at a time.
    Enjoy!

  • Iphone 4S wifi issues 7.0.4

    hey guys
    IPHONE 4S - Help needed
first post on here as im at the end of my tether with this phone.  So after installing IOS 7.0.3 i had no issues untill about 2 weeks in wifi started dropping out intermitently, at home, and office. i took no notice.
once i actually needed to use the Wifi about a week later is when i noticed Wifi was off and i couldnt connect.
so after forgetting the home network and trying to re-connect i kept getting 'Unable to connect' or the network purely wouldnt show.
so i wiped the phone to backup > issue didnt fix
i secondly wiped the phone  to fresh > issue didnt fix...
IOS 7.0.4 released > Install to backup > issue didnt fix
    booked into genuis bar ...
they performed diagnostics > all clear
they wiped phone to IOS 7.0.4 > Hey presto , worked like a treat .... but wait
now 2 days later (sunday , phone got fixed on friday)
Issue returned. Thought maybe the music or pictures or apps i reinstalled off the mac were corrupt and brought the issue back (unlikely)
another fresh install to IOS 7.0.4 (this time, new playlist and no pics for the phone)
    Minimal apps reinstalled
    (ISSUE NOT FIXED) !!!!
im getting so annoyed. the Home network keeps coming and going....
anyone got any ideas. (i know its not the broadband as i have many other things hooked up to it and all work perfect, i.e. Tv, Mac, Ipad, Apple TV etc)

ChrisJ4203, thanks very much for your input.  I don't mean to turn this post into an endless debate, but frankly I am still having a hard time believing that the WiFi died as a result of a hardware failure.
My logic might be flawed, but here it is:
While the iPhone 4S got very hot when wirelessly downloading and installing iOS 7.0.4 over the WiFi network, the WiFi chip and antenna had to be functional to complete the wireless iOS update.  Apple was very clear that iOS 7.0.4 is too large to download and install via cellular service.  Accordingly it would appear that any hardware failure had to occur in the few minutes between the download/installation of iOS 7.0.4 and its first use.  That window of opportunity is incredibly small in an otherwise flawless hardware performance.  I am not a big believer in long shot coincidences, so a WiFi hardware malfunction seems highly improbable to me, but not impossible.  A firmware/iOS conflict still seems more plausible to me.
I also don't read much into Apple's "out-of-warranty" replacement offer at $199.  AT&T tells me that anyone walking in off the street (with or without a hardware or iOS malfunction) would receive the same offer.
I appreciate that some iPhone 4S users did not experience any WiFi issues when they updated to iOS 7.0.4, but such difference could easily be explained if Apple used more than one WiFi chip and/or firmware in the iPhone 4S series.  Such an explanation would also account for iOS 7.0.4 (and 7.0.6) not recognizing the WiFi chip after the iOS update.
Still perplexed, but thanks again for your kind efforts to help.
Wonder if I can limp along long enough to spend my money on an Apple iPhone 6 ... but then again I don't want to be anyone's beta-tester.
I am tempted to switch to a Samsung Galaxy or some other smartphone as long as I will be buying new accessories, but frankly I don't want to waste my time learning a new OS or core apps.

  • WiFi issues with iPhone 4S & ios 6 update

    Okay here is my issue...
I've been reading alot of issues that people have with connecting to WiFi with their new iPhone 5, iPhone 4S or other devices but I have no trouble connecting to WiFi at all. My problem is that WiFi wont 'work'. The WiFi I'm hooked up to at home doesn't let me do basically anything that requires internet.
I can get on the Facebook app fine and my newsfeed loads but I can't see Facebook notifications, upload photos or videos, read inboxes, look at photos, its very slow etc.
I can't get into the App Store or iTunes at all. It says it 'Cannot Connect to iTunes Store' when I try.
I can't upload photos onto Instagram
Currently I'm into the Simpsons Tapped Out game and I can't go onto it at all.
And there are a few other minor issues I am having.
All these things I can do with my Telstra 3G network however and it ***** because I want to use and do all these things but I have to use my 3G and I've just recently gone over my data monthly usage and been charged extra which I'm not happy about.
So is anyone else having these issues or is it just me and I'm stuffed? I'd REALLY love some help.
I've been lost with what to do because as some are having WiFi issues as well, mine isnt the same and it's hard to find answers or just other discussions.
    Please Help!
    Thankyou.

I am having the same issue since updating to iOS 6.  It has been noticeable on my iPhone 4S and a little less noticeable on my iPad 3 but I think it is happening on the iPad too.  Very annoying problem.  One way to get it to work better is to re-boot your phone.  It will work for awhile then and then eventually not be working anymore and you will need to re-boot again.
Just to be clear with everyone - the iPhone looks like it is connected to the wireless, it gets an IP address but can't transmit any data.  Device:  iPhone 4S, OS:  iOS6

  • Wifi issues with iphone not responding

    Phone: iPhone 4s.
This issue started approximately two weeks ago. My phone initially started with the Wifi connection greyed out, I followed the appropriate steps to resolve this issue, and was successful. Now I can turn the wifi connection on without problems, but my iPhone will freeze (delay), then return me to my homescreen. Occasionally I do automatically connect to my known wifi, but then will disconnect and return to 3G. If I make an attempt to go to settings to manually reconnect, the phone again freezes. The phone seems to freeze after I click settings, then when pressing Wi-Fi, the bar turns dark bold, but freezes and doesn't open. I then have to click my home button, return to the main menu. Also if I open an app during the seldom opportunity my phone is connected to wifi, the phone will disconnect, return to 3G and freeze. I have rebooted my routers, forgot networks, reset network settings. I have thought about resetting the entire phone, but my phone will not stay connected to wifi long enough for me to back up my data to iCloud. I am thinking of stopping into my local verizon store, but I think they will redirect me to an apple store; which is 35 miles away. Of course the problem with me not connecting to Wi-Fi is my increased use of data. Now I am over 75% for my monthly usage with 2 weeks remaining, and do not see justification in possibly having to pay the overage fee. Many times when my phone freezes due to these wifi issues, or will not respond, I have to do the manual power/home reset. In conclusion, I need to figure out how to maintain my connection to Wi-fi, and stop my phone from not responding when I open my wifi settings. Thanks in advance!

My Iphone 4S is doing the same thing..  All of a sudden the WIFI button is gray and not working.  I chatted online with a Rep.  He had me call *228 and hit option 1, then call again and hit option 2.  All of a sudden the WIFI button was black.  But it could not find any network.  I shut it off and restarted it and now button gray again.  I called that number again and still gray.  I read somewhere else that a lot of people have a problem with the WIFI button.  They say it basically just stops working.  This was a replacement phone because the volume stopped working on my original phone.  I assume they gave me a refurbished one because it didn't seem new.   I'm due an upgrade in 3 months.   I'm disabled and just hate driving to the store again.  I wish there was an easier way.
