Another iPhoto import question

Hi all. I'm new to the iMac and all of the applications. I've been reading up adn getting familiar with my iMac and I'm loving it. I plan on using iPhoto and had a question about importing my photos.
On my PC, I would use a card reader to copy the pics to a folder that would basically be my negatives. Then I would organize them into folders based on the year and then the date I took them. For example, I had a folder in My Documents called Canon/2007/20071031 Halloween. I would eventually take the "negatives" and save them to a DVD for archiving once I had enough to fill a DVD. Ok, to be honest, I'm behind on the DVD burning process.
I watched lots of the iLife tutorial on iPhoto and I like how they manage the photos. Seems like it will make my life easier. Since I'm used to using a card reader, I would still like to do it that way instead of connecting my camera (unless I get talked out of it). My printer has a built in card reader that I planned on using. Is it possible to import them that way? I haven't been able to find anything on importing with a card reader. Also, what's the best way to archive off my "negatives" just in case. I don't want to lose any of my pics.
Thanks

Rinker:
You can import from a card reader into iPhoto. It will act just like a camera being connected if you want it to. You use Image Capture's preferences to set what application to open, if any, when a camera is connected.
FWIW, I use a card reader to upload from the memory card to a folder on the desktop. I name the folder with the date and brief description of the shoot. (I always reformat the card with the camera after each upload and upload after each shoot). When that folder is imported into iPhoto the Event gets named with the title of the folder. That saves me having to rename the event later on. Also, if desired, I can rename the files in that folder with R-Name so that each image file's name is unique and not the default name given by the camera. I use the capture date in the international format, YYYY-MM-DD-halloween-001.jpg, etc. This allows for excellent search and sort capability both within and outside of iPhoto.
Then after importing into iPhoto I copy that folder to my external HD that stores the source files, i.e. digital negatives and delete it from the desktop. Hope this has been of some help to you. This way I have two copies of the original file, one on the external and the other in iPhoto. iPhoto does not touch the original when it does its editing. It makes a modified version of it for that purpose.
Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto Import Questions

I have about 14,000 pictures on the hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Any issues with importing that many? Should I do it in steps? If I decide to stop the import half way through does it commit the changes to the library or is it as if I never added those pictures? If I add some more pitures to my hard drive folder do i then need to specify only the new pictures for import or will it know that I have already imported some of them and skip them ( in other words or I end up with duplicates or not?) ?

I would do them in batches, simply as I don't know what machine you're on, how much Ram etc you have. Importing is multi-stage process: Copying the files, indexing them, processing them for Facs etc. Personally, I would go in batches of about 2k at a time, and let it finish one batch before doing the next.
iPhoto is good for 250,000 images in one library, so the number  isn’t the issue.
If I decide to stop the import half way through does it commit the changes to the library or is it as if I never added those pictures?
Best not to as you may end up with some photos partially processed and the database confused. But it will remember the ones fully imported.
If I add some more pitures to my hard drive folder do i then need to specify only the new pictures for import or will it know that I have already imported some of them and skip them ( in other words or I end up with duplicates or not?) ?
    Couple of things:
    1. It will warn you if it detects you trying to import duplicates.
    2. Why would you be adding Photos to your hard drive folder? Why not just add them to iPhoto directly?

  • IPhoto import question

I have just brought a new 27" iMac and have a query about importing pics into iPhoto.
For some reason when I import they don't seem to set up a new event but simply just import under the photos tab.  I want to be able to put them into different events.
Is there something I am missing here?  I never had this problem on my iMac with Snow Leopard.

What do you see when you click on Events on the left hand side?

  • How to import questions into Captivate 4 from a delimited file

    I'm looking
a way to import questions from a delimited text file (or excel spreadsheet)
    into captivate.
All the questions are simple multiple choice, single answer, four selections per question.
I have hundreds - I'd hate to have to retype them all in one at a time.
    Thanks in advance
    -Joan

Does anyone know if this is a feature in Captivate 5.
Other things I would really like to see in Captivate 5.
Importing and Exporting the graded quiz/test content out of captivate into another
application/ form.  Such as xml, tab delimited, excel spreadsheet,
Adobe pdf, Word document or another format.  Our current content
developement systems allows us to (when publishing) do this.
1> exclude questions from the Published content
(exclude section questions, or final test content)
2> produce different test versions from question banks
3> Produce a PDF paper test for when we want to train in a classroom setting
4> Select which questions we want to produce
5> Import questions from a pre-defined format.  To note: when we do this the system also makes us define a unique interaction id so that the import will update existing questions.
I know this will NOT work for some of the more sophisticated questions, But for the simple Mulitple choice, true/false, fill in the blank.  etc..
THIS WOULD BE A GREAT FEATURE..
It would also be NICE TO HAVE THE abiliy to PROFILE versions of the SAME Course WITH OUT REPRODUCING / DUPLICATING / REPEATING THE  ENTIRE COURSE PRESENTATION.
    Such as
    "INSTRUCTOR TAUGHT TRAINING"
    "WEB TRAINING"
    "PAPER TEST A"
    "PAPER TEST B"
    ETC...
LASTLY: if we can not export the QUIZ content.  Can an excel spreadsheet LIKE INTERFACE be used to edit certain aspects of the questions.
Such as the InteractionId which is sent to the LMS ('cmi.interactions.0.id').  My developer team says it is real difficult and time consuming
to track down interactionIds and then maintain them in a perfect way.

  • I have iPhoto 11 on my macbook. I want to export photos to another iPhoto library on an external hard drive. How can I do this.

I have run out of space on my internal hard drive on my macbook and I want to create another iPhoto library on an external hard drive using most of the photographs already on the hard drive.
I did this easily on an old G4 mac and an old version of iphoto. I simply imported the photographs from the library already on the hard drive to the new library I created on the external hard drive.
It does not seem to be possible to do the same thing using iPhoto 11.
I have no idea where to find the files on the mac to do it the more direct way by just importing the files.
    Any ideas?

Here's one way to do what you want:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
c: Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • How to transfer pics from 1 library to another iPhoto

How can I transfer pics from one iPhoto library to another iPhoto library, without having duplicated the space on the harddrive?
Will the space (GB) duplicate when I copy the pics from one library into the other and delte the 1st one or will it stay the same?
    please help!
    rewards given!

    Hello,
I think this is likely what you want...

When done you should occupy just one space, but be sure you have a backup if it's important.

  • Another iPhoto 6 bug

Amusing but yet another iPhoto 6 bug (6.0.2). Boy, does this program need some work.
I created a new library, set alias on so it loads from my iView MediaPro layout, and am busy importing. In the information tab on the bottom left, it tells me its busy importing 1595 photos with a total size of 15066192772 GB. I wish.
    iBook 14" 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5GB

    Paul:
Did it finish loading the iView files? If so check the size at the bottom. If it's still incorrect and extremely large try rebuilding the library, launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed, follow the instructions to rebuild the library, while selecting only the database option. That may clear up the problem.
I didn't note the size when I was importing my iView collection but iPhoto does reports the correct size now.

  • Problem iPhoto imports triplicates of my iPhone photos

    Hello,
When i want to import my iPhone photos on my mba'2012, iPhoto wants to import 3 times each photo.
Instead of importing 1006 photos, iPhoto imports 3018 photos !! :-/
For example, for a IMG_1500.jpg, iPhoto imports IMG_1550.jpg, IMG_1500_2.jpg and IMG_1500_3.jpg. (same size for each photo)
Everything is fine in the Photos.app in my iPhone, i see the exact number of photos (1006).
    HDR is OFF
    So what the problem?
    Thanks in advance.
    For information:
    iPhone 4S 5.1.1

(On OS X Lion, i have the same issue)

    First, thanks to help me.
For your question, here a screenshot of Image Capture:
    Always the same problem...
This means that there a problem with my iPhone ?

  • Aperture iPhoto Import

I imported my iPhoto library into a trial version of Aperture (Aperture will manage the directory).  iPhoto manages the photos by putting them in by year in the "Masters" directory, then by event name.  I noticed that the Aperture iPhoto import placed all my photos into 2011 directory instead of the same file structure in iPhoto.  Is there a way to get Aperture to manage my imported photos and place the photos in a file stucture by year?
I do not intend to monkey around with the iphoto or aperture library's, but I do want the photos stored in a fasion that I could move on to some other program if needed in the future.
    Thanks Gary

None taken, I am just one of those that want to know how Aperture is handling my photos.  My search in the manual and in this forum did not help entirely, until now. You are right it does not matter how Aperture handles the bundle as long as you want to continue to use Aperture.  I thought it was strange that iPhoto handles it one way and Aperture handles it another. I like the way iPhoto places my photos in by year.  It appears that Aperture will also do this but only for my pictures this day forward.  My concern is for the future, and for something that may never happen, but I plan for it anyway.  If I decide to make another change in the future, I would want to make sure at least the pictures are structured by year.  I should be able to go into the Aperture bundle and copy the masters out if needed.  I was hoping I could get the imported photos structure by year.  I do like Aperture so far and will more than likely make the purchase.

  • IPhoto import - a way to import specific albums?

I was watching the instructional video DVD that came with aperture and have found it a very, very helpful tutorial in getting started. I am having a problem doing one of the things shown on it though. At the beginning of the second track, the video covers iPhoto import, and shows how you can import a specific album by Import > Files and choosing a specific album name within the iPhoto library. My iPhoto library, however, does not have any album names in it - only numbered folders. I'd like to be able to import my business photos only and not my personal photos into Aperture, or ideally both but with a separate aperture project for each photo session. But since the iPhoto hierarchy is just numbered folders, it is too confusing to find what i am trying to import. Do I have to export all my iPhoto albums separately into folders that I name individually, and then import those folders into Aperture?

    You need to
    1. Download the images to a folder on the desktop.
It may be possible to download an entire album at a time, but that's a question for a Picasa forum
    2. Then import the folder to iPhoto.

  • IPhoto import to A3 - Faces is now Shoulders or Elbows??

    .
After importing my iPhoto library, I noticed that my Faces are no longer Faces, but Elbows, Shoulders, Tummies, Etc......
Now, I can't see some of my Faces and it wants me to name Hands, Sky and Tummies?? Anyone else have this issue with your iPhoto import.
    What I've tried so far:
1)I deleted everything and imported again (same issue).
2)I created a new Admin user, created a new A3 library and put it on a different drive, then imported my iPhoto library again (same issue)
3)The issue is happening to the same people each time.
4)I repaired Permissions from System Disk
5)I ran Disk Repair from System Disk
6)No....I did not wipe out my computer and do a fresh install of the OS. Why does everyone have to do this? And if this is done, if you port over all your programs and settings from Time Machine, aren't you just porting over all the same issues. So to keep from porting your issues, you have to painstakingly reinstall ALL your software? Sorry, but NO, that is just too much work. I'm not retired.....yet.
I did a search and couldn't find anyone with this issue.
    Narvon

I'm seeing the same thing with some of my photos. Certainly not all of them, though. What I've been doing is removing those shots from the grouping of a certain person, and ignoring them when it shows them to me as an unnamed face. It seems the offset within the photo got mangled, somehow, as the person in question is in the photos with this problem (I can tell by distinctive clothing, sometime). I've wondered if it might be related to cropped photos, with the face box position calculated from the origin of the original photo or the crop, and Aperture getting confused over which to use.
I haven't yet found the "not a face" and "add a face" method in Aperture, that iPhoto has, but I haven't really looked for it, yet, either.

  • IPhoto Import no working properly

Another issue pertaining to iPhoto import, unrelated to disk space errors.
What I'm see is missing events and pictures. I went to Aperture and selected import -> iPhoto -> keep files in current location.
A3 imported many pictures (probably most), but is still missing a few events (as well as missing pictures within events that actually did make it) and completely botched faces - the previews don't show the face of the person as you hover your mouse over them, as it does in iPhoto.
Is this really supposed to be a pro version of iPhoto? What a disappointment.

I have been fighting this issue. I have issued bug reports to Apple. I have more than 13000 images (a large number of them scanned in from old photos). On import Aperture(3.02) loses some 60 events and nearly 3000 images. Even the iPhoto browser breaks for me. If is scroll down to some event and open it the images are not from the event and from there on the browser is broken -- have to restart Aperture. I rebuilt the iPhoto library (using iPhoto's built in rebuild capability as well a third party application which will rebuild the library. I have looked for bad keyword and found none (I do not use the keyword facility). I tried exporting the photos Aperture missed but Aperture would on occasion not recognize jpeg files in the finder-- it showed the folder to be empty. I would like to switch because it has some features I really like but as it stands it is unusable.

  • Do Descriptions from iPhoto import to Aperture

Do descriptions from iPhoto import to Aperture, if so, is there a way to make the description or caption show up in an Aperture slideshow?  Pre-Purchase question.
    Thanks

I don't know.  But with the recent upgrades to iPhoto and Aperture, the two programs share the Library file format (Libraries are no longer specific to one program or the other; any upgraded Library can be opened in either upgraded program), so the question becomes: where does the "description" in iPhoto show in Aperture, and can it be shown in a slide show?
IOW, importing has been removed from the problem.
Apple has listed a good bit of cross-progam information here.  Don't know if iPhoto descriptions are covered, though.

  • Transfer from one NetWeaver to another. IMPORTANT PLEASE!!!

    Hi,
I'm still using my "SAP NetWeaver 70 - Java and ABAP VMware Trial".
But, as explained yesterday, I'm having some trouble with table DOKTL table (see post "DOKTL problem... and more... " Posted: Apr 23, 2008 9:40 PM, for details).
However, my NetWeaver is getting difficult to use (Type list fails in SE11, ...).
So, I've installed a new NetWeaver.
    IMPORTANT QUESTION -
Now, my important question : HELP PLEASE !!!! :
I WANT TO TRANSFER my developments done in my old NetWeaver into my new one. HOW DO I DO THIS. I don't want to redo everything again.
See my previous post for details on this ("Export Tables (SE11 stuff) and ABAP program (SE80 stuff), HOW TO ?" Posted: Apr 23, 2008 6:17 PM).
HELP PLEASE, I can't imagine I have to redo my three days work because I've had to reinstall NetWeaver.
    Angela

I've been looking in SE01.... but not getting very far.
Can anyone give me a simple example.
For example I create a simple table with SE01. I create a simple ABAP report with SE80.
I then have two things in my "local objects".
How do I create an "transport order" to move them to another NetWeaver ?
    Thanks for some help.

  • Automator iPhoto import

    I am trying to do a very simple iPhoto import, but after the folder is selected and the action for import has been confirmed in terms of folder, I get the following nasty issue;
    Can't get «class utid» of {name:"iPhoto transport", «class ascd»:date "Wednesday, June 14, 2006 22:06:49", «class asmo»:date "Wednesday, June 14, 2006 22:17:30", «class asip»:{0, 0}, size:2.10752E+5, «class asdr»:true, alias:false, «class ispk»:false, visible:true, «class hidx»:false, «class nmxt»:missing value, «class dnam»:"iPhoto transport", «class asda»:alias "Home:System:Library:CoreServices:Finder.app:", «class kind»:"Folder", «class asfw»:{0, 0, 0, 0}, «class asty»:"

«class utid» is the type identifier key of the reply record for StandardAdditions 'info for' command. iPhoto needs this to determine if the file in question meets the action's stated input requirement (Image files of type JPEG, JPEG2, TIFF, or QuickTime). Whoever wrote the action didn't realize that the 'info for' command returns a different reply record for folders. Instead of throwing an "expected" missing value for the type identifier, it simply omits the key entirely.
Anyway what this basically means is that if you intend to pass a folder to the Import Photos action, you'll need to insert Finder's 'Get Folder Contents' action just before it. This will ensure that the actual image files are being tested instead of the folder object itself.
