Another ipod connection problem.

I've had my ipod for quite a few months now and it started off with no problems connecting to my PC and downloading songs to the ipod from the PC.
However, it seems that evertime i try to update songs it gradually got more and more problematic, it started of with me having the connect the ipod several times before it was recognised by itunes (it has though always been recognised as connected to my PC via my computer etc.) I've always been able to work around these problems but now I seem to have struck a brick wall.
I connect the ipod to my PC through the ipod USB cable and nearly immediately the ipod is recognised by the PC as being connected, however itunes does not recognise that the ipod is connected. After roughly 5-10 minutes after connection i get a box saying itunes needs to be updated and do i want to do it. It then leads to a box with a picture of an ipod and 2 buttons, "update" and "restore". Both buttons are greyed out and a message saying "initialising..." stays towards the top of the box, I have waiting roughly 20mins for this to change but it remains static.
This is however as far as I have gotten as the box seems to hang as I get a "not responding" message from it if i look in taskmanager.
I am using itunes version 6.2.0 and ipod software 2006-01-10 and the problem repeats itself after reformatting the ipod and reinstalling the itunes and ipod software.
I would be most grateful if anyone could help as it seems the only option i have left is to take it back to the store i bought it from.
Thanks in advance.

Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall during the download and update usually resolves that error.

  • A Paticularly Bad iPod Connection Problem

My ipod will not connect to my PC it shows up in windows explorer but when you click on it or rightclick it freezes the "explorer.exe" and i have to end its task..the ipod updater is the same way it freezes as soon as i plug in my ipod..or open it with the ipod connected.
Once I plug in my Ipod there is no way short of restarting it while its plugged in i can do to get it free'd up I've been having alot of problems with this lately normally I would be able to restore it and start fresh but nothing I do seems to have any effect this time,
its been on a declining slope since it broke originally see this thread for my previous question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=535772&tstart=0
I'm guessing a major harddrive failure...wouldn't that just be the way of it now that i'm off Warrentee...

I posted this in another topic, but I had the same problem that you have...this is how I resolved it:
Success!!!! Here's how I did it:
    1) Re-named iTunes music folders in my My Music documents, just to avoid any mishaps during the uninstall process. I just called them "Backup" and "Backup2"
    2) if you have the ORIGNAL iPod updater installed on your computer, restore iPod using this updater. If not skip this.
    3) Uninstall iTunes, and any iPod updaters that you have, including the original. Delete any leftover files & folders from the C: drive.
    4) If your iPod is in disk mode, and is available in Windows Explorer, find it and right-click, and select format. Make sure to have the volume type set as FAT32, and do not use quick format. This is really just an extra step, just to be sure that your iPod is clean of any newer software.
    5) Re-boot, and re-install your ORIGINAL software.
I have a 3G 15GB iPod, and do not listen to podcasts. So not having that capability in iTunes is no loss to me. If you have more music in iTunes than will fit on your iPod, you can either manually update iPod, or create a playlist, and set iTunes to only update that playlist (or any others you create later). If you listen to podcasts, and need that functionality in iTunes, you may be out of luck, as oldversion.com does not currently have older versions of iTunes available. If you stil have a setup program for iTunes 5, you may want to back that up as well and re-install that after your original install is complete.
I have re-charged my iPod, and listened to it for a bit, with no song skipping, and all songs I have asked for on it. I'll keep an eye on it over the next couple of days, but it seems like I have cured my sick iPod.

  • Ipod connection problems

After a period of about a year of the ipod working properly, I started to have connection problems.
My ipod isn't recognized as connected by windows when I connect it- and I often get "a device connected to a usb port has malfunctioned and is not recognized by windows", and it doesn't charge when I connect to the power adapter that I bought from apple.
If I restart the computer with the ipod plugged into USB port, the ipod briefly flashes the "Do not disconnect" screen before it goes back to the menu screen.
If I connect my ipod to the adapater, it's as if the ipod doesn't even recognize that it's plugged in to anything - there's literally no response from the ipod.
I'd been having intermittant problems getting my ipod to connect and charge when connected through my computer's usb ports - having to unplug the ipod and plug it back in, or restart the computer before it would charge and be recognized by itunes.
So, guys, do you think this is a faulty usb cable or could my ipod's dock be messed up? The usb ports on my computer are 1.1, but they work fine for runnning my webcam and other accessories.

Given what you've posted, the first thing I would check is the cable.

  • IPOD CONNECTIVITY PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS XP VIA USB 2.0

    Enough is enough.
I have an ipod touch and I am having difficulty connecting it to my pc via usb 2.0.
I have searched the entire web and came across many cases similar or the same as mine. It's time for apple to face the fact that there is something wrong with either the apple mobile service or the apple usb drivers or the itunes software that causes connectivity problems with win xp.
For the record my case is this:
I got my itouch 3 days ago. I installed itunes 8.0. Then I plugged in my ipod to a usb extension cable port connected to a usb at the back of my desktop computer. At first I got the "this usb device can perform faster if you plug it to a usb 2.0 port etc." message. So I did. I removed the extension cable and connected it directly to one of the usb ports at the back. The first time it synchronized, it seemed fine. So I decided before I do anything with it, to update it to the 2.1 version. I made my account and bought (very bad policy there apple, it should be free or at least cheeper than 8 euro) the 2.1 update. I clicked to update the i-touch. While it was updating it crashed during the restore process (because it was disconnected but I didn't know that at the time). I unplugged it, resetted and plugged it back and managed to continue the restoring process until it was updated. After figuring out itunes I chose the "manage files manually option", kept everything unchecked in the sync options except the applications. I noticed there were random disconnections here and there but I didn't pay much attention because they weren't very frequent.
The next day I plug in the touch again and suddenly I hear that annoying "connecting-disconnecting" sound from windows while my touch kept disappearing and reappearing in itunes. Suddenly my playlists disappeared from the touch. Nothing was in the touch any more. How could that happen since i had chosen to manage my files manually instead of synchronizing? So I unplugged the touch again, restarted the touch, restarted the pc, stopped and restarted the apple mobile service, unistalled and reinstalled itunes, searched microsoft support and read many usb troubleshooting documents in the web. Nothing happened. The touch randomly keeps disconnecting from the usb. I eventually managed to put my stuff back in and keep them there.
    Here's what I know:
    1) There is nothing wrong with my usb ports. I don't use usb hubs, they are usb 2.0, the voltage (500mA) is correct in the device manager. Everything else works fine there.
    2) The ipod touch does not support disk mode so you can't see it under "my computer" and this is not a problem.
3)There is nothing wrong with the ipod, it works perfectly.
    4) This is not a usb cable physical problem.
    5) The five R's are irrelevant with this situation.
Uninstalling and reinstalling itunes doesn't solve the problem, neither does hard resetting the ipod.
    6) Older PC configurations seem to be more affected by this but it doesn't have to do with unsupported specific chipsets.
    Here's what needs investigating:
    1) There may be a problem with the apple mobile service running on win XP.
    2) There may be a problem with the apple usb driver and win XP or older motherboards.
    3) There may be a 2.1 firmware issue with usb 2.0 connectivity.
Workaround so you don't go nuts:
Use USB 1.1 instead of 2.0. It is A LOT slower but it keeps the connection stable and you can work with the ipod. Just start copying and go do something else for the next hour. So far it works for me.
This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention. I've stumbled across forum discussions dating to 2005 with this problem (with older ipods of course).

I think this needs to be put down to the eternal PC/Mac argument. Apple dont want to fix this as they want everyone to buy a Mac. Its a business, understandable, but in turning away PC buyers they alienate a huge percentage of the market.
Now, I had my first iTouch stolen. It synced, for the most part, very well, just occasionally it removed settings and music, but ticking boxes each time I sync'd sorted that, Its a workflow procedure.
SO, now that my Touch has been replaced, iTunes cannot see it. The PC can identify it on USB1 or USB2, My work lap top can see it and has indeed upgraded it to V2 software, just in case that was the issue, but no. For some really weird reason Itunes on my desktop cannot see the new pod.
This does not make sense with the argument that Apple software doesnt work on a PC, but doesnt help that none of the Apple support staff, phone or in-store have a clue about Windows operations.
Because my Touch has now been trying to connect to 6 separate installs of itunes, multiple USB ports, multiple USB cables, a complete overhaul of the registry settings (everything else still works), and the loss of all my previous settings and backups from the last Touch... but still, the PC says its an ipod but cant install it, iTunes sits there, dumb.
The only thing I can do now is sell the device as brand new as it has never had music on it and is just a week old...
It has changed the MiniMac I was going to have for my new flat screen TV into a PC and suggests that anyone with a PC should stick to devices that run on PC, of which there are many, just without the user interface of the dear departed IPod Touch.
    Thanks

  • Ipod connection problem, not seen by comp. HELLLLLPPPP

After choosing to restore my ipod the message 'itunes needs to prepare your ipod for recovery. Please leave your ipod connected'. I click continue. It prepares ipod for recovery, before saying 'waiting for ipod' even though its connected, it then repeats the same message, 'itunes needs to prepare your ipod for recovery. Please leave your ipod connected'. And the cycle repeats. I've tried this in all 4 USB ports of my laptop, which dont have problems with any other device and none of them work. This problem has happened before and fixed itself after 3-4 weeks out of the blue. I dont want to have to wait for this long again before updating my ipod.
Anything that can help would be great, its so frustrating!!!!

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
Pay attention to the last part of this article and replace the USB Driver for your computer (with the iPod not connected).
In Device Manager, right click on your iPod, select Disk Management, and format it (FAT32, not a quick format) and while you are there give it a higher drive assignement such as M, or P or Z.
If iTunes now sees it, Restore your iPod and then fully charge it.
You can only use Firewire for charging.

  • 30g iPod connection problem to my TV

Hello I have a 30G iPod and I am working with windows. I am trying to connect my iPod to my TV with an AV cable. I do get sound but no video. My TV has a white and a yellow plug for the AV but no red. However, for my Gamecube and DVD player this has never been a problem, they always work fine with only the white and yellow plugs plugged in (I usually just leave the red one dangling there). With the iPod though, this doesn't work. With yellow and white I get no response at all. But with red plugged into yellow, I get sound and when people talk or there is sound white lines flash on the screen. I have my TV Out thing on "on" and that did not help. Am I helpless because my little Zenith tv doesn't have three plugs?!?

I found this, try their combination:

The iPad Bluetooth does not network with iPhones or iPods. It is intended for headsets, keyboards and car systems, computers for tethering purposes.

  • IPod Connectivity Problem.....???

    Hello Everybody,
We have a 5th Gen. video IPod and had recently put over 1000 songs on it from a PC based iTunes. In the past, we had also put some music on our IPod from different computers (Mac & PC) but the problem is, as soon as we connect the Ipod with our eMac (OSX 10.3.9) all of the previously saved songs are deleted as iTunes sync the IPod with our songs library.
We believe that there might be some settings that we need to change so iTunes will not sync music automatically and delete the previously saved songs. Could somebody please help us navigate how to put some more songs on our IPod without deleting our precious songs library.
    Thank You.
    God Bless Us All

  • Replacement ipod connection problems

    Hello there
My ipod mini battery was dead, so I got a replacement one with my one year warranty. However, now when I connect it to my computer, iTunes doesn't recognise it as being connected. I've read pretty much all of the of the problem solving thingys on the support thing but none of them have worked.
    help please

Have you formatted the replacement iPod with the iPod Updater? iPods come back from Apple formatted for the Mac and must be prepared for Windows use.
If you haven't done this yet, this is the reason iTunes doesn't recognize it.

  • Another CN001 Connectivity Problem

Have noticed a few posts over the years on this subject, and I am suffering yet again with it.
Manage to watch a few minutes on my iPad, then the dreaded CN001 messsage. Only solution is to come out of BT Sport and log in again to get another few minutes of viewing. Haver managed to miss all of the goals in the first half of today's game, and missed all but on on the Conference game yesterday with the same problem.
I have deleted and re-uploaded the BT Sport App, but this makes no difference.
It's really becoming a joke now - I resigned up with BT to get BT Sport, but I seem to be able to watch is less than ever.
What the heck is going on with BT???????

    Hi tonymc,
That error message usually means you're not connected to the internet.
Are you connected to your Hub's wifi at home when you have this problem or are you out and about using a mobile data connection?
Post back and we'll take it from there.

  • Mercedes aps50 connection ipod connection problem

    Hello,
I have an ipod-interface installed to my aps50 system in mine mercedes. When I connect my ipod touch it connects. plays music. After 18 minutes the connection fails between the ipod and the aps50
What is this problem? It is very annoying.
    My ipod touch has IOS5.0

Ian - it works, thank you very much!
I feel a bit stupid now for not trying that - I did think of it but ruled it out as I was still able to get online via my other device. Much appreciated and I can get back to spending hours immersed in my new toy when I should really get some sleep.
I can't wait until I can get access to the UK appstore so I can download some of the tantalising apps, but guess that will be towards the end of May when the ipad is launched over here.

  • Ipod Connection problem (XP): This worked for me -- no joke

I have had the same problems that many of you had: Ipod was working fine, then it wouldn't update. Windows recognized the device, but itunes and iupdater did not.
I was near despair, especially when going through all the $%*# that you all did (5 R's, remove itunes, reinstall this/that). During one of these efforts, i managed to wipe out my CD ROM drives as well. Code 41, the drivers were fine, but the device wasn't recognized.
Bingo. I went to several Microsoft XP discussion boards, and found a registry fix to remove the upper and lower filters on that particular key. Anyway, it worked like a charm, and also fixed my ipod problem. I was able to restore the IPod right away, whereas before it would simply never offer the restore.
The cause of this seems to be either a bad installation of Roxio or some other CD writing software, or else a spybot worm.
Be careful when messing with the registry. I am not responsible if you mess this up.
Instructions are at the Microsoft knowledge base:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5BLN%5D;q314060

Spoke too soon. All that the above did was allow me to restore the iPod with the 2006-1-10 update.
Once that was done, I thought everything would be fine, but i managed to update all of 6 songs before the ipod crashed again. I think it's a hardware problem with the ipod. let the cursing begin....

    again i wrote:
    *#ifconfig nge0 dhcp start*

please someone that you know how to set the internet connection on solaris dev exprres using the dhcp that serves on cable modem.
i dont believe that be more complicated than Linux or FreeBSD
    Thanks.

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
(OPTIONAL) While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.
