Another "is this too hot" type question....

I have a week 13 MBP and it's slowly getting hotter everytime i use it. It used to idle around or even under 50 degrees C and never really broke 60 degrees C. But i've notticed that it's getting even hotter lately (when i touch the case it feels a lot hotter than it used to) and when i just ran the latest version (0.91) core duo temp it told me i was running at 70 degrees C with under 5% CPU usage. Now i know this is really too hot for that little CPU, not even running at max speed. But is it any worse off than most people out there and would apple do anything about it. Any chance i would get that new logic board like that one guy and fix the whine as well (mines really not too bad so i'm not complaining). I'm heading down towards the Apple store where i bought it this weekend. I might take it there and ask the genius. Any Thoughts????

Well, I've asked the same question about the temperature and apparently Intel says that these temperatures are fine. In fact, your MBP is probably set to turn on its fans just once it hits 70 degrees C. I also think that the processor temp has to do with more than simply the load that it is dealing with - consider the temperature and lighting conditions of your environment (a hot, bright, sunny day will more likely increase the temp of your MBP). My cpu temp variates from between ~50 C to just over 70 C, but I believe that It's gone as high as 78 once. Everything that I've read and all the research that I've done on this issue seems to point to the same resolution: relax. Your MBP was built to handle the temperatures it runs at, and do so well. If you are intent on speaking to the Mac Genius about this topic, it can't hurt, but my guess is that he'll tell you the same. Best regards.

  • Another Data Rate Too High Error Question

    Hi all,
I have seen quite a few posts about pgc errors, but most of them deal with slideshows and not video; and I can't find anything with the REF=KApgc error.
I'm just putting all of my home movies onto an authored DVD, not rocket science.  I'm using the 'Film Submenu' preset with only 5 main movies, things like Easter, Birthday, etc.  My transition for each button is a slate (for lack of a better word) that says exactly what it is and when it happened, before each movie plays.
After I had everything set up, I realized I didn't have an ability to "play all" that would include these slates.  Simple solution, make a 'play all' button that links to a timeline that has everything in it - the slate, then the movie, next slate, next movie and so on.  (When I say movie - they are all .mov files rendered out from After Effects, even the slates)
My transcode settings are NTSC DV High Quality 7mb VBR 2 Pass and the "maximum quality" box is checked.
When I run the 'Check Disc' all is fine.  Preview the disc, all is fine.
Build Disc: Hours of Transcoding then the error: Data Rate Too High at *timecode* REF=KApgc.
When this movie is by itself with a button click, it's fine.  It's only in the "play all" timeline that it produces the error.
If the data rate isn't too high in one place, why is it too high in another?  It's the same thing, just a longer timeline.
    Please Help!
    Thanks.

    Thanks Jeff,
I feel kind of silly for not thinking of that as a solution to my play all dilemma.  That's why you're the expert I guess.
A better solution would be to create a playlist of all of your other timelines; that way, only one copy of each gets burned to disc.
Hopefully the "data rate" error will go away with these changes.
    -Jeff
Can I place my slates that are just assets (.mov) in the playlist or can I only put timelines in there?
    Thanks again,
    -Jim

  • Is this too hot for my MacBook Pro?

    Hey guys,
I run Bootcamp on my Mac (OS X during university, Windows 7 for games on the holidays haha) but I have noticed my computer gets really hot.
    I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 15' 2.2 i7.
At the most (using coretemp) my Macs CPU appears to get as high as 100C. I know the max for my chip is 100C, so is this a problem?
It usually runs a little lower (87-97C) but I still worry there is the possibility of damage. It should be noted that at these temperatures it sounds like a jet engine is inside the case (obviously the fans).
If this is a danger how long is too long for the computer to be at these temperatures?
    Kindest Regards.
    Tyler

At that temperature for a sustained period of time over time will lead to your thermal paste on the CPU to fail. Actually, alot of the thermal paste sitting on the board will fail eventually but at high temps for sustained periods of time can't be great. And if you've ever seen iFixit's breakdown of the macbook pro, there are gobs and gobs of thermal paste all over the dang thing.... I say use away and make sure you get apple care !! hehe because if any of the problems you get are related to hardware it can always be fixed.... or swapped
But 100 C is not that hot for a CPU or GPU... in fact it's borderline warm. Most CPUs I have run up 140-165 and operate around that temperature... I think your safe for the most part. Just backup your stuff onto an external occasionaly, and if worse comes to worse make sure you have apple care and bring her on in.... I'm curious to hear what other's say about the operating temperatures. If you look in your manual Apple says normal operating temp is like 50 - 65 or something and they say 105 C should be your max....

  • MSI - R6870 - Twin Frozr II - Is this too hot?

I think there is something wrong with this card of mine. I noticed that the idle temps were high. Way too high. I opened the case, latest ati 11.11 drivers, outdoor temperature of 20 degrees C, this card is idling around 62 degrees C. As demonstrated here:
If I force the fan to 80% it will drop down to about 55 degrees.
Is this card faulty? Seems unusually hot for something that's meant to be extra cool.

I use MSI AfterBurner program. You can preset the Fan.  I place mine on AUTO , other option is set to 50 percent fan speed which will also keep it within a good Temp. or User Control and Scale your temp settings.
. At 100 percent Load running for 30 minutes to 1 hour have yet seen my HD 6870 Twin Frozr II (OC) version hit 70c.  Usually at 60 -65c.  But if you ever get near 90c or above ... then problems are arising.
My pc system with the MSI cards don't like the AMD Catalyst Drivers or even those from MSI.  I have to play around finding which DRIVER from which Catalyst 10.XX or 11.XX performs the Best.
All I know is that AMD/ATI has left the HD68xx series in the dust as Has Been graphic cards and leave the customer the worries of finding a Driver that works.
I have CrossFire configuration but the DirectX 11 says my cards don't support DirectX 11.   Using one of the earlier Drivers, I will be able to use DirectX 11 but then I don't have CrossFire.
So go figure ....  1 Driver will work for one thing but not the other.  Beware that some will cause Artifacts or Green Screen or Screen Freezes (Locks Up) or even cause your Computer to Crash (get a error) and Dump.
AMD don't care about supporting the HD 68xx series.  Get a chance go with HD6950's or 6970's.   I'm tired of the ATI/AMD games. In May 2008 went with ATI HD 3870's and worked well until one fried in December 2010 for unknown reasons.
So I replaced them with HD6870's hoping for great Drivers. So disappointed now that it's been a year. My next PC rig going back to nVidia.!!!!  Sure nVidia cards get hotter (power hogs) but they're more reliable and lasted longer than the AMD/ATI cards.   No wonder nVidia is #1 --- 99 percent of the time. Well we do need AMD competition to keep nVidia prices down.
    my rig:
Thermaltake Armor Plus full tower, Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6 mobo,  Intel e-8500 3.16GHz CPU, OCZ PC3-2000 (1600) 2x2GB memory, Zalman ZM850 850watt power supply, Zalman CPS-9500 CPU cooler, and MSI HD6870 Twin Frozr II (OC) in Crossfire ... replaced the old Sapphire Toxic HD3870's. Use Dual Boot OS's Vista Ultimate 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit.

  • Is 85c too hot for ram?

Have 2x 2 gig ram modules --- without smc fan control intervention 1 runs at 85 c. Query, is this too hot and should I replace that module? In replying please advise of what temps your memory runs. thanks.

Temperature Report from XLR8yourMac has quite a bit of information
From the author of Hardware Monitor:
    - Each FB-DIMM contains its own controller, called "Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB)".
Each AMB also contains its own temperature sensor. The maximum temperature of an FB-DIMM, measured by the AMB, lies in the interval between 95 and 125°C (it will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer), the typical value is 110°C. So all memory-related readings mentioned in the thread should be considered low and well within specs.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If I can be of further assistance,
    don't hesitate to contact me.
    Best regards,

  • 127 degrees F.. too hot for new iMac ?

iStat Pro says my new iMac HD temp is 127 degrees F. Is this too hot? The top left side of the case is almost too hot to rest my hand on. The case gets progressively cooler as I run my hand down the side.

127 degrees F is not too hot at all, mine regularly gets there and comes back down. You are resting your hand on the exhaust vent so of course it's going to be hot. I have seen my machine get as hot as the high 130's with no adverse affect. It seem like the temperatures are influenced by how warm the room is and if you are doing something that is graphics intensive. Also having vents that are blocked or living in a dusty environment can influence temps. My advice would be keep your iMac well ventilated (the intake is at the bottom of the machine) and once in a while when the machine is turned off vacuum both intake and exhaust vent to pull any dust that my have accumulated.

  • OK, retracting my recommendation--this thing is too HOT!!!

IS anyone getting a refund for the heat issue?
I raved about this MacBook on here before but whoa did I speak too soon. This thing is so hot--wayyyyy hotter than my rev. A 12" powerbook. I mean forget using it when the power adapter is plugged in.
I don't just mean on your lap...I mean for prolonged typing, even when it's sitting on a desk.
I thought the main reason for the Intel switch was because the faster PowerPC chips were too hot in a laptop. But this Intel chip is scorching! Unbelievably hot!

your macbook is probably defective if it runs so hot that you cant even type on it! mine usually isnt too hot. i think idle its around 50s and when i start web surfing and doing other things it goes up to around 60s to 70s. normally, it gets warm on the back left side, but not so hot that it would burn me.
today however, when i was installing windows xp and ms office through parallels, and burning a lot of discs, i noticed that the back left got MUCH hotter than the normal "warm". it was so hot that i could barely hold it for a few seconds before i had to set it back down. whats odd is that coreduotemp only registered a temperature of around 69-72 degrees. i guess all the heat of the processor was being pushed out? i dunno...
i think im going to take mine back to return it and wait until apple deals with these issues. so the problems with my mac so far:
    1) buzzing/whining power brick (on the brick and on the connection to the macbook)
    2) extreme heat when doing optical drive intensive tasks
    3) the moo sound
dont get me wrong, i love this machine and parallels is very cool with virtue desktops, but i just really dont want to be bothered by the moo/while/buzz/heat when im all alone in my tiny apartment in japan for a year where i probably cant even explain my situation to/understand the genius at the store in japan!
i hope you are still within the 14day exchange/return period so you can take yours in too!

  • Another "my temp is too hot" thread

I've done a lot of searching (both google and here) and I believe that I'm running too hot, but since this is my first experience with OCing I want to make sure so I'm posting here.
Anyway, I made a sig with all the info needed (I think), but I'm running at 2.3Ghz with an idle temp of about 49-51C and even with a medium amount of stress it gets up to 58C. From looking around this seems to be too hot. My guess is the thermal paste I used is crappy - no name crap from a local store. But that would only take it down about  5C, or so I've been told.
My fans: One on the base as an intake at 2300RPM, HSF at 3200, and 2500 for the outake located just below the power supply.
I'm running the cpu at 2.0Ghz with an idle temp of 38C, but that is with the case on its side with the panel off; whereas I was running at 2.3 upright under my desk.
Hmmm... what else. Room temp is low, it is well air conditioned.
I think that is all, fire away if you need more detail to help.
    thanks
p.s. link to a review of my HS http://www.ocworkbench.com/2004/scythe/samurai/p1.htm

I mounted a coolermaster aero 7 (suggested by coolg... thank you man) and works fine
idle temp is about 38 and full load is 43-46. and i used to reach about 60 before with my xp 2800+ barton.
anyway i think that a 2500+ not oc and in normal room temperature conditions (shall we say about 20°C) shouldnt be too hot, even with the boxed amd fan+heatsink.
first check if the cpu cooling is well installed.
i've also found (personal experience) that little details may change a lot of things: case fan position, a "tidy" and well ventilated case, round cables...
    take care

  • My new 32gb iPhone 5 gets too hot during phone calls. Is this normal?

My new 32gb iPhone 5 gets too hot during phone calls. Is this normal?

Mine will get hot mostly if I'm in an area with poor reception.  The phone will juice up the power output to lock onto a signal and will cause it to get hot and battery will drain much faster.

Is "extremely hot" so hot that you can not touch it anymore? These things get rather warm, but if they burn you they are too hot and defective.

  • Will this drive be too hot?

hi, i am about to purchase a new harddrive for my 12" G4 ibook. i have my eye on this one:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=7900&Item=HIT13G1591
the 100 GB version. does anyone have any ideas on how well this drive would perform in my computer? will it produce too much heat for my small ibook?
    thanks a lot.

I agree with Duane. The drive looks good and it has the 3 year warranty. (and it will not get too hot) Some of the cheaper made drives park the read/write head right on the cylinders. These drives only have a 1 year warranty. The 3 and 5 year warranty drives are better made and park the read/write head off of the drive when the drive is idle. This saves your drive from failure especially on a laptop.

  • Using a 7200 RPM hard drive- too hot?

A question about hard drives and heat. I've read using a 7200 RPM HD in a fanless slot load iMac may be too hot. What has been people's experiences with this? Does anyone have suggestions of cooler running drives? I have a 60 GB 7200 RPM IBM Deskstar that was original equipment in the Digital Audio I had that I'd like to try in my iMac to replace the original 4400 RPM 20 GB drive.
Also, has anyone added any fans to the inside case of their slot loader?

    Hey Steve,
    Here's a discussion from:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6805878&#6805878
">Other forums say that "modern" 7200rpm drives do not get dangerously hot. How modern is 2002?
Well if it were me and wanting to save everything I could I would go ahead. When this came up before I suggested putting a wrapped copper heat sink around the drive. I would at least put a thermal pad between the drive and the mass store cage to maximize heat transfer. (this is what's done in the eMac) If you did that you'd probably want to do the same thing between the cage and the divider panel.
I would then monitor the drive temp and if I felt it was too high I would go to a wrapped heat sink.
still too high - mini fan scab power off the 12 V supply to the drive.
When this was brought up before I read a study that said that there was no correlation in drive temps and failure rates."
Also, has anyone added any fans to the inside case of their slot loader?
I did this. Mounted a 12V squirrel cage fan in my son's iMac 500. It was just below the upper vents. I scabbed power off the 12V from the hard drive.
It worked in there for about two years but I noticed it was kind of noisy even tho' that's the quietest type of fan.
Later I thought you could mount a more conventional type directly over the back of the HD mounting cage.
However in all these iMacs the most common point of failure is in the upper part of the iMac. ( The PAV board ) Most often this is due to heat buildup and involves the high voltage capacitors and flyback transformer. That was actually why I mounted that fan in the upper section.
