Another issue with Mac+PC & Airport Express network

Okey here's my problem. Yesterday i got my very first Mac (iBook 12") and i'm very happy about the computer in general. I also have Airport Express wireless base station. My other computer is table-PC and it has Planet WL-8314 PCI wireless card in it. I have ADSL-modem that i used with ethernet connection.
Now i want to connect Airport Express to ADSL so that both computers could get wireless internet connection and PC could be able to connect to speakers with Airtunes.
iBook connects to Airport Express very easily. No question there. But my Windows XP (service pack 2) PC is driving me crazy. I have configured the network using the admin utility from iBook. I've tried fully open network, use mac-address, WEP and WPA, but nothing works. I've installed Airport Express applications to windows as well but it doesn't connect.
Here is my current settings (Hope i can translate them correctly to english, i'm using finnish).
Encryption: WPA2 Personal
Encryption type: WPA OR WPA2
Connection: Ethernet
DHCP is in use
Share IP-addresses "checked"
by sharing one IP-address (DHCP and NAT) (use 192.168.1.1. addressing)
As i said i've disabled encryption, used mac-addresses and even made it fully public but nothing helps.
When i configure Airport Express from iBook my PC shows the network and does recognize the name of the network correctly and even if there is an encryption in use or not. If i'm using WPA and trying to connect, my PC asks for password but when i give the correct password it just stays stuck - nothing happens. The same thing when i try to connect without any encryption and passwords. It just tries and tries and tries... and fails.
This feels pretty hopeless. And the weird part is that yesterday i got it work for maybe an hour or so. Then Windows crashed and when it loaded again the same settings did not work anymore. So there are really weird things happening. And that period when it was working the admin utility worked in PC as well.
So any ideas what i could do. I'd really apreciate any help that can guide me to make my network fully work. So far it works perfect only with iBook - well better than nothing .
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The connection i managed to establish last night didn't last very long. When i restarted Win XP, the connection was lost again. Anyway now i think i have solved the problem. All i had to do was to not set Windows XP take control over wireless network configure. This was done through unchecking one option. Then i could open wireless network adapter's own configuration tool and establish a connection to Airport Express wireless network.
So basically i had to punch Windows XP's native tools down in order to get the connection work at all. It just amazes me why such feature exists if it doesn't work.. Anyway i'm happy now and hope this discussion with myself in this thread might help some other as well .

  • Ipad 3 has intermittent issues with airplay to airport express

    Hi
I have difficulty streaming from ipad 3 to my airport express, its very intermittent.
Neither my iphone or my mac have trouble

Hope this helps others who are struggling to get the most out of their airplay devices.
After I spent a couple of hours talking to Crutchfield, Yamaha and Century Link I think I figured it out, at least in my case.  Thanks to Google I was able to find some posts that pertained to my particular Century Link modem router.  Evidently the modem that I was provided has a bug that has yet to be corrected with a firmware update that when set up for Auto Channel it doesn't necessary find the "best" channel.  So after reading this I hooked into my modem and saw that it automatically connected to channel 8.  I read some stuff that said typically channels 1, 6 and 11 are the best for what that is worth.  I changed this feature to override the automatic channel selection and chose channel 6 (which was a suggestion I read online) and I have been streaming various music sources (spotify and Pandora from my ipone 6 and ITunes from my iphone 5 and 6 and from my PC) for several days and countless hours and not ONE skip.  I couldn't be happier.
How Crutchfield, Yamaha or even Century Link couldn't figure this out is beyond me but at this point I don't care because my setup is finally working has I hoped it would.  I am just keeping my fingers crossed that this performance issue doesn't come back.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Speed issue with TC and Airport Express 802.11n in WDS mode...

    Here is my problem.
I replaced my older base station / Express duo with
a new Time Capsule (1TB) and a new Airport Express (802.11n).
I set up the network with the TC as base station running a WDS network (WDS main) and the Express is the WDS remote.
When I check the wireless clients from the TC, I find my iMac running at 130Mbits and the Extreme at 54Mbits.
No other wireless clients are connected to the network (I kept my slower network as a parallel one for my "older" Macs).
The only other connected device is my Dish network DVR that is connected via an Ethernet cable directly to the Express.
So my question is why does the Express not communicate at >54 speed rate with the TC?
And, why does my iMac connect with 130 and not with 300Mbits?
    Any thoughts?

Instead of using WDS, you should take advantage of the "Allow this network to be extended" option that is available for the 802.11n AirPorts including the TC. WDS only operates in the 802.11g radio mode.
    Here's the basic setup:
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Printing issues with D1455 and Airport express

Hi, I'm having problems printing with an HP Deskjet D1455 and the airport express. The printing always halts after printing half the page.
Attached is another post related with this problem:
    "HI,
i just purchased the Deskjet 1455 and connected to the airport express for wireless printing. I followed the instructions of installing printer on windows with bonjour on the Apple website. After I get everything set, then I started to print, but it stopped while printing(It prints half of the document then stop). In the computer status says ''error'', and it is the same thing when I trying to delete it.
The printer works when I directly connect to the computer.
I want to use wireless printing, how to solve this problem? THANK YOU!"

Does anybody knows how can I can solve this?
    Thank you.

I came across your question and wondered if you could help me. I just bought a macpro with leopard and am having a heck of a time getting it to work with my design jet 800ps which is connected by usb cable. I installed the driver for the printer from the leopard cd but to no avail. The printer shows up in the printer list but when I send a file nothing happens. I have been on the phone with HP but nothing seems to make a difference.

  • Audio sync issues with Optical Toslink Airport Express

    Hello
I have 2 airport expresses. One connected via mini to RCA to some Logitech speakers.... And the other via mini to Optical into my Bose T20 receiver. The Bose is def a few milliseconds behind the Logitech and my computer..... Probably due to the optical cable in the Bose receiver.
Am I to to understand switching to the RCA in the Bose should correct this delay?.... The price being losing on digital audio quality in place of analogue?!!
Can someone please advise if I can somehow get the Logitech connected airport express to have a delay so it syncs that way?
    Appreciate any help.
    Cheers

At this point I would recommend that you look for signs of Wi-Fi interference that may be preventing your Express from providing the best signal possible ... even in the same room.
An excellent tool to measure signal quality, built into OS X Mountain Lion, is the OS X Wireless Diagnostics:
Option-click on the AirPort icon on the OS X menu bar.
    Select "Open Wireless Diagnostics..."
Enter your Mac's Administrator credentials in the next window.
On the Wireless Diagnostics window DO NOT click on "Continue." Instead, go to the diagnostic's menu bar, and then, select Window > Utilities
Start the test with the laptop near the wireless router. Note the values for RSSI and Noise. They should both be negative and measured in dBm.
Now take the laptop to the other locations that you want to access the Internet in your home. Different rooms, different floors, etc. Again, note these same two values at each of these locations.
When you have finished collecting the data, you will want to enter them into the following formula for Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). SNR = RSSI - Noise. For example, if your get the following readings: RSSI = -61 dBm and Noise = -84 dBm, SNR = (-61) - (-84) = 23 db
To get decent wireless bandwidth performance at a location you will want the SNR value to be 25+ dB.

My HP 2355 won't show up in AirPrint? I have it plugged in via USB and set it up on my Mac mini with the airport express network. Any advice?

Unless your HP printer is an AirPrint-ready device, just connecting it to the USB port of the AirPort Express base station will not make it so.
On the other hand, connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port it can be shared out by the base station's print server. Please see the following Apple Support article for details.

  • How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
    All systems are running 10.6.8.

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

  • Airport Express network suddenly no longer visible - but only for one Mac..

    What the..?
My 20" iMac Core Duo can no longer see my Airport Express network. It happened yesterday after restarting the AE a few times.. (I do this and also restart the modem from time to time if the net connection stalls - or I want to boot of my housemate's PC from the network cause she's hogging bandwidth)..
Anyway.. The first restart caused it to not re-appear on the list of available networks, so I restarted again.. then it was fine - it came back. All good.
I reset it again this morning because the net connection was not meeting my expectation and now the iMac no longer sees the AE network.
I can connect to other Wi-Fi networks around me (there is a neighbour with no WEP) but cant see hide nor hair of my own network.
The puzzling thing is that my girlfriend's Mac Book, my other iBook G3 and my housemate's PC can all see it and use the network fine - as normal..
So what has happenned? And what do I need to do?
Between you and me ..This intel iMac has been a bit tempramental ever since I got it.. weird things like this happen to it from time to time.. never one thing that you can point at and say AHA! Faulty [something] but just weird stuff like this... Hmmmm..
Some help would be much appreciated.. Thanks!
    20" iMac Core Duo 2.0GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 256MB Graphics

Well, from reading some other posts, and trying my own experimenting, I have gotten it to work.
Deleting the keychain did nothing, manually connecting to the network by typing the name in etc.. nothing.
What DID work was using my G3 iBook (which could see the network) to use the Airport Administrator to change the channel from Automatic to manual - in this case channel 7 (a completely arbitrary choice).
The thing I cannot work out is why it had this issue in the first place. It worked fine for months then one day decided that it apparently didn't like automatic channel selection.
The problem is solved but the cause is still a mystery.
Hopefully though, this might help others with the same problem.

Hi..I have an AirPort Extreme base connected to my DSL Modem and has been working fine. But I recently bought another DSL modem along with the latest Airport Express. With this one however I can't get it to connect to the Internet. The light on the Express is flashing green though. Does it mean I have to re-set the settings on Airport Utility? I.e. the old settings haven't been cleared yet. Any suggestions?

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.

Apple TV mirroring issues even with Mac mini, airport extreme bought at the end of last year, and an iPad 2

I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
    and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
    Thanks again.

  • Issue streaming music to AirPort Express

    Hey guys.
I seem to be having difficulty with the above. I've had my device for around a year and have never had any trouble with it.
Over the past week I've been trying to connect iTunes to the remote speakers and it simply freezes at "Connecting to AirPort Speakers".
At first I thought my firewall may have blocked it, but when disabling it the same result is received.
The strange thing is, I can still see and change settings on it using the config softrware with no issues at all.
The AirPort connects wirelessly to my core switch, and my PC is plugged into the switch via ethernet.
Nothing has changed in terms of software or hardware. so I'm a bit confused as to why it literally just "stopped working".
Anyone have any ideas? (Any flamer posts will just get removed :D)
    Thanks,
    Andy

Update: this problem exists when just listening to music on iMac with iTues; no airport express or network involved. Something, somewhere in the software is causing this.

  • Are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

Sonos uses its own priopietory wireless protocol SonosNet to distribute audio data among all its products, thus it should not affect other network devices which use standard WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n protocol at all though they may share the same radio channel for wirless signaling.
On my dual-band (5 GHz / 2.4 GHz) Airport Extreme staion, I select the option "802.11n Only (5GHz) - 802.11n (2.4GHz)" and turn on "Use wide channels" in Wireless configuration in order to use only 802.11n protocol and more radio channels to achieve maximum wireless bandwidth of 400 Mbps. This bandwidth is necessary for quick Time Machine backup to NAS connected to the Airport Extreme station through Ethernet cable. So my iMac and MacBook Pro always connected to the Airport Extreme through 5 GHz radio channel with 802.11n protocol whereas my iPhone 4S always connected through 2.4 GHz radio channel with the same protocol.
In my living room Sonos ZP-90 (same as new CONNECT model) zone player is connected to Airport Extreme directly through Ethernet cable (recommended by Sonos) and Sonos S5 (same as new PLAY:5 model) zone player in bedroom is connected wirelessly through SonosNet protocol to the ZP-90 zone player in living room.
These devices are in operation simutaneouly most of the time. Music is playing through the Sonos ZP90/S5 zone players througout the day, I am streaming viedo through Internet (fibre broadband 25 Mbps) on my MacBook Pro in bedroom or iMac in living room or reading news on my iPhone. So far so good and have no encounter any interference problem for about three years. Further more bandwidth for 802.11n protocol does not seem to be affected at all.
In fact with a low power Fujitsu USB drive (2.5" / 500 GB, designed for notebook) plug into USB port of Airport Extreme, it can be used as NAS drive for Sonos music distribution system without any problem. Just transfer all files from Music folder in my home directory on iMac into this NAS drive and set it up as music source in "Manage > Music Library Settings" in Sonos Controller for Mac application will do. Though the same drive can be served as Time Machine's backup disk as well, an independent full-fledged NAS drive for Sonos and Time Machine backup is better long-term solution for reliability and performance. With the NAS configured as sole music source, you do not need to keep any computer powered on all the time in order to play music through the Sonos system.

Hello, I have Iphone 5 with Itunes music, airport express, 2 stereo speakers. What else do I need to hear music on the speakers?

    Hello ricsch,
It sounds like you want to setup your Airport Express to Airplay music from your iPhone 5.  I found an article with steps to help you get this setup:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.
    How to Set It Up
Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary.
Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
I also recommend reviewing the sections titled "Some things you should know about AirPort Express with AirPlay" and "Things to consider before you begin" in the full article:

  • Can i connect an airport extreme (us version) with a new airport express (euro version) ?

Hi, I lived in the USA for a while and moved back to Europe.
I have an airport extreme (US purchased) which i would like to link with a new airport express (EURO purchased) in order to extent my network.
    Is this possible ?
I have multiple problems doing so, which leads me to believe the US and EURO product might not be compatible.
Thx for your kind assistance, G.

Connecting routers wirelessly to extend a wireless network is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Although AirPorts can extend other AirPorts in a WDS, they only work with a few non-AirPort ones...like some Linksys models.
Here are a few articles on the subject:
    - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607414
    - http://rgbdream.com/?p=44
Another option, although maybe not as practical in your circumstance, is to connect the AirPort base directly using an Ethernet cable to the Linksys. Then setting up the AirPort as a bridge.

  • Problems with brand new AirPort Express

I have had some issues with a new AirPort Utility.  Here's the timeline of what I did/what happened:
    - Plugged in APE
    - Istalled AP Utility on Win7 machine & updated to latest version.
    - Found APE wirelessly ok.  Also connected RJ45 cable, and found it that way.
    - Went through set up, and entered details of home network to try to get APE to connect to it.  Seemed to go ok, but needed to restart the APE to complete.
    - On APE restart, could no longer find it over LAN or Wireless.
    - Also, couldn't restore my original network connection on Win7 machine.
I have now hit rest button on APE, I have done system restore on Win7 machine, I have power-cycled my router, and I have tried to repeat entire set up process using an XP Pro machine.  All to no joy.  Still can not see APE (from either machine, LAN or wireless) and still can not connect Win7 machine to home network (fine connection via XP machine, iPad and other devices, etc.)
    Can someone help?

    Ok, let's double-check your WDS setup ...
Set up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS)
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations in near proximity of each other during the initial configuration phase. Be sure to jot down the AirPort ID MAC addresses for each of the base station that will be used in the WDS.)
Main Base Station Setup - AEBS
Either connect to the AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBS) wireless network, or, temporarily, connect directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities), in manual mode, to make the following settings.
    WDS Tab
o Enable this base station as a WDS: main base station (checked)
o Allow wireless clients on this base station (optional)
o Click "+" to add the Remote base station.
    o Select the AX.
o AirPort ID: <verify that this is the correct wireless MAC address for AX>
o Auto configure as a WDS remote base station (checked)
    o Click "OK."
o Verify that the AX has been added to the list.
    o Click "Update."
o Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
o New network name: <verify that this is the same as the network name for the AEBS>
    o TCP/IP: Configure using DHCP
    o Base Station Password: <the AX base station's password>
    o Confirm: <same as previous step>
    o Click "OK."
