Another Java Update Question.

Hello-
I am seeing posts here where people want to disable the current Java for Mac OS X 10.6.update 8. One post said Safari crashes everytime he opens it now that he installed this update.
I am using Safari, "Enable Java" has been checked since I prchased this MBP 3 years ago.
My knowledge is not the best in this area, so I come here to get some help-
I am wondering how one knows if they should install the new Update for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8?  It says, "If you do not use Java applets, you should disable the Java web plug-in your web browser," which is Safari for me.
Any suggestions?  I have been having so much trouble with my MBP the last 6 months, all I need is something else to conflict and cause more troubles.  A trip to the Genius Bar is needed.

You should install the update that appeared in Software Update today (April 12). The previous one was released on April 3.

And, to prevent future occurrences of the Java exploit, you should un-check Java in Safari Preferences > Security. Make yours look like this:

    Is it advisable and possible to update java or should we just let Apple update it when they deem necessary via the system software update?

    If the Java update doesn't appear through Software Update, I probably would not update it. Make sure if you do install a Java update it is Universal, and not stating it is for PowerPC Macs.
    You might find someone who can better help you in the Intel Mac forum that refers to your Mac. Also check with the game developer if they are aware of any specific Java issues.

  • Another java newbie question:  "Link errors"

    In the environments I've attempted compiling in, it seems that there is a just-in-time default, which means that any missing classes are not found until run time.
    Is there any way to to run javac so that what we used to call "link errors" will be displayed at compile time?

    Java has no .h files, so it shouldn't compile at all if a class is missing, unless:
    Someone compiles class Library, they have class Extension available
    They give you Library
    You compile, javac sees theat "Library" exists and checks no further
    At run time, you get errors about Library needs missing class "Extension"
    What class is missing anyhow?

    There  was http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3127?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US -- similar symptions fixed by the 10.6.3 update, but by now I'm at 10.6.8.

    Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you, but at least we can comiserate about the problem. I have 3 different 10.6 SUS installations that are having this problem. I've been trying to directly manipulate the downloaded files, settings, etc. I'm seeing that the downloaded files here:
    /var/db/swupd/html/content/downloads/35/57/091-7360/
    do not have any of the ".dst" distribution files for the various languages that should be there. I believe that must be the "incomplete download" part, but I've even copied those files from a 10.5 SUS download (all of the 10.5 SUS engines work w/ this Java update, BTW), still to no avail.
    I've also tried manipulating the list of updates in the .plist here:
    /etc/swupd/com.apple.server.swupdate.plist
    by changing the flags for 091-7360 to "Mirrored" instead of "PleaseMirror", changing Enabled to "true", and things like that. I still cannot get SUS to be happy w/ this update. I think that if I had a better understanding of how all of these files tie together (you've got lists of updates in /etc/swupd, but also multiple catalog files in /var/db/swupd/html), I might be able to fool the thing into working. Alas, it appears to be beyond me, and I may have to just wait until another Java update for 10.6 is issued to be able to use SUS for it again.
    Any further observations you may have would be quite welcome. Maybe we can put our heads together and figure this out.

  • HT5675 I have a question about OS x 2013-002 1.0 the Java update the showed up recently

    If I have installed Oracles Version 7 Update 17 (build 1.7.0_17-b02) I think I should skip this update. I am seeking confirmation on that decision and if it is correct how do I tell App Store to stop asking me to install it?

    I updated two iMacs this morning with both the Apple OSX Java update and the Java update (17) this morning. On my older iMac (2007) all is working fine.  On my newer iMac (2011) all works fine for awhile, but then I start getting probelms.  Programs like Address Book, iTunes, and iCal won't open from the dock, and Safari won't load web pages. Need to use force quit to get out of them.  After a restart, all is back to normal again for awhile. Both computers are running Lion 10.7.  Everything was working fine on both computers prior to the Java updates, so I'm wondering what my one computer doesn't like about the latest updates.

  • Java Update - After deployed install and settings

    In our managed Windows 2000 environment with Windows XP Pro clienst (SP2) we use Active directory to deploy software packages.
    We are currently trying to install J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5, which works perfectly. We have made a transform file for giving answers to the MSI file of the Runtime Environment.
    In the tranform file we have specified as wel that "Java Update" will be disabled after installation. This works well, too. After deploying the package, however, we notice that when a user logs on onto the workstation, a message is diplayed on screen, asking the user whether or not he want to re-enable the Java Update mechanism.
    Is there a way (e.g. by a registry key, or another MST adaptation) to prevent this message?
    Another question: is it possible to set the "Temporary Files", "Jar compression" level and several security settings like "Warn if certificate authority can not be verified" via registry keys or within a transform file?
    Any help would be kindly appreciated.

    I don't know what happened, but AFAICT, you did the job wrongly. I suggest redoing it this way (TM help files) and not worrying about fixing the mucked up system:
    +*To revert to a previous version of Mac OS X:*+
    +1. Insert the Mac OS X installation disc in your computer’s optical drive (or an optical drive connected to your computer).+
    +2. Double-click on Install Mac OS X+
    +3. When the Language Chooser appears, select your language, and then click the Continue button (looks like an arrow).+
    +4. Choose Utilities->Restore System From Backup.+
    +5. In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.+
    +6. Select your Time Machine backup disk.+
    +7. Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. To restore your computer to the state it was in before you erased it, choose the most recent backup.+
    +8. Follow the onscreen instructions.+
    Alternatively, if the SuperDuper! backup was a bootable one of your previous installation, restore it. That's better and faster than mucking with the TM restoration procedure above.

  • Latest Feb 19, 2013 Java update for 10.6 breaks Safari 5.1.7

    Hi people, long time viewer first time poster here. I wasn't sure on how to contact apple in regards to their latest Java update on the 19th February 2013, so I thought I post it here and see if others have the same problem.
    So, I'm running the following:
    Java SE 6 (Java 1.6.0_41-b02-445)
    Safari 5.1.7
    Mac OSX 10.6.8
    When I try to load http://www.uk.msn.com (which is also my homepage) my browser freezes and I can't load any other page. This results in me have to quit Safari and sometimes force quit.
    I know it is the recent Java update because when I disable Javascript the website works fine and I can interact with it. As soon as I turn Javascript back on, the issue occurs again. Obviously turning Javascript off is a work around for now, but I require it for work etc.
    I have done a permissions repair which doesn't fix anything.
    Could others try the link and let me know what happens please? All OSX versions are welcome to see whether it is just the 10.6.8 OSX or spans to 10.7 and later.
    Also, does anybody know where I can report this issue to Apple, or do I just ring them up and tell them?

    I also have 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7, and the most recent Java update. I can access the MSN site through the link you provided but, on returning to Apple Discussions, got a 60-second stall before Safari would work right again. Yes, it very well could be the site.
    The only Safari 5.x crashes I've had came after a Java update 12-18 months ago. I had repaired permission both before and after the update but the crash log showed a number of dlink files with question marks instead of version numbers. Another repair permission restored function and I've had no further crashes. So I always repair permissions before any subsequent Java update that's offered and twice after. For what ever reason, it seems to keep me going.

  • How can i launch another java application using Runtime class?

    I created a java process which invokes another java application called Launch as shown below,

    But it is not working...can any one help me on this?

  • Running a java program in another java code

    Hello,
    I have a question.I wrote a java server code named server.java. In this server code, I receive another java class code called "HelloWorld.class" from another node. What I want to do is to execute the class HelloWorld inside server.java.
    Briefly, I would like to run a compiled java code (class code)in another executing class code. How can I achieve this?

    Sorry but your terminology isn't that clear. Are you trying:
    1. To call methods on another class or
    2. To launch a separate process that will run another class?
    If it's either of these then they're not 'Advanced Language Topics' but simple:
    // Scenario 1

    hw.sayHello(); // or whatever the method is
    // Scenario 2

  • Bloomberg video no longer plays since last system or Java update - I do not recall which.

    In last 45 days or so, Bloomberg video no longer plays. 
    This is the result of a system or Java update - I do not recall which.  I've tried all the tips that Bloomberg has suggested to no avail... and they are no longer assisting me!  Please help, friends.  I've been a Macintosh user since 1986 (really!), please help, friends.

    Do you use Glimmerblocker, or any other advert/content/security blocking/filtering software ?
    Yes, I use Sophos.  But, recall that with another browser (Chrome), video plays fine.  So the issue is not with Sophos per se.
    Safari-Preferences-Extensions is set to OFF ?
    I just turned Safari-Preferences-Extensions to OFF.  Video will sill not play.
    Regarding;"
    check System Preferences - Flash Player - Storage tab to see that 'allow sites to save information..." is on.
    In the Advanced tab -  click 'delete all'  ?"
    I did this, but, I an unable to delete all the Site Data; I get an error box:  "Flash Player was unable to delete all local storage. The files may be locked by another program. Close all browsers or restart your computer, and try again."
    I get this error even with all the browsers are closed.
    I think this points to our bug:  Only in my Mac OS user profile and only in Safari there seems to be some Flash Player file which is either 'open' or 'locked' to deleting.
    Where could that pesky file be????

  • Some pages don't render properly after Java update for OSX 10.6.8

    I can't seem to get T-mobile.com's website pages to render properly anymore. So far, this is the only website I'm having this issue with, though there could be more I'm not aware of.
    I go to www.t-mobile.com and this is what I get:
    I think I might be missing a plug-in, but not sure; if so, I don't know which one or how to get it.
    This only started happening after the latest Java update for OSX 10.6.8, which I installed on Feb. 24, 2013. All of T-mobile's pages look like this, except if I go to www.my.t-mobile.com's home page. Then I get a normal page, but after I log in, I get more wierd rendering issues again. So here's the page that appeared normal today:

    I was so lost but then I decided to try a work around to get my online bill and managed to get it, but I don't want to see the pages like this. So help please?

    So, here's more on my point...
    I put in the 3 captured screen shots in my original post above. I used Grab to copy the web pages, saved them to my desktop as .tiff files and dropped them in for others to view. This morning, I went to look at my post and instead of seeing the screen shots, I see 3 tiny blue boxes with question marks. When I left click on the boxes, nothing happens. When I right click on them, I get options that are not helpful:
    Open Image in New Window
    Open Image in New Tab
    Download Image
    Copy Image Address
    Import Image
    Capture Selection from Screen
    Convert Selected Traditional Chinese Text (why the frack is this an option?)
    Convert Selected Simplified Chinese Text (or this an option?)
    I checked my Safari Preferences and I see I have checked, under Security, Enable plug-ins, Enable Java, Enable JavaScript.I have to have Java enabled to run a few things.
    Did something get corrupted in Safari?
    Am I'm missing some plug-ins?
    How do I get them back?
    I'm going to search the internet. Well, after doing the search, I still don't think I've got what I need. Thinking I might need to reinstall Safari. If this is the case, will I loose all my Bookmarks?

  • Java update 6 causing constant permission errors

    I was looking for a little more experienced thoughts about the numerous persistent permission errors caused by the last java update for apple's software update. I've read forum articles that says it's OK to ignore them. And the Apple Support KB page that list the dozens of errors that can be safely ignored. But it just doesn't feel right. I'm tempted to revert to a pre java update backup version of the OS, that repair permissions gave a clean bill of health to it's screen. My question is; By not updating java Do I have more risk than by running with all the constant errors caused this update in file permissions? In trying to learn more about java I found among other things these snippets from Boutell.Com
    However, most people do not have Java applications on their computers these days, and most websites useFlash instead of Java for the interactive features that used to be commonly written in Java.

    Removing Java on MacOS X is not recommended as Apple has made Java a standard part of the operating system and may rely on it to a greater degree than a typical Windows system.
    What you should NOT do
    Either update Java, or remove it. Do not refuse the updates. That gives you the worst of all possible worlds: a buggy old version of Java that might be exploited by
    maliciously coded web pages.
    Just  wondering what others thought about this. And just how useful is java these days?  Is it true Java has been dropped from OS 10.7? Hopefully, Flash is on the way out too.

    I don't see those errors, but Disk Utility cannot fix anything related to symbolic links, so all I can recommend is to ignore them. Your other option is to reinstall the OS and then run Software Update, after making a bootable backup/clone.

  • How can I roll back a java update?

    This morning we did our monthly take-down-the-server-run-all-the-software-updates, and it included "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 16"  Now our java software is totally hosed.
    How do we roll back to the previous version of java?

    We used Pacifist ( http://www.charlessoft.com/ ) to re-install the java Update14
    This is shareware and he asks for $20.  We are sending him $100!!!!
    -- that's us doing the happy dance!!!
    (We have Update15, but, a) apple has removed it from the support downloads site, and b) 16 came really fast after 15 -- so I suspect that 15 is broken somehow.  The guessing game is a little annoying -- an article on the support page that would come up when you search for java for 10.6 update 15 saying that apple has removed the update and don't install it if you downloaded it would be, well, courteous!)
    Note -- this seems to have worked just fine to clean up whatever update 16 broke for us, but I suspect that we could have used pacifist to install updates 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and then 14 and been really really likely to undo whatever bad thing update 16 did.
    Another note...  Got into this mess because I was trying to minimize downtime.  I've never had a problem with a java update before so I got greedy/sloppy.  Sure plenty of OTHER people have had problems with java updates, but, well, what is that old saying?

  • How can I revert back to a previous Java Update

    I am having issues with my software since the last java update. At the moment the only option i see to fix this issue is by reverting back to my previous java update. Please please tell me how to do this. Apple's decision to bundle java into the the OS is really quite frustrating. Not easy to have multiple versions of java on the same system.

    I have a copy of JavaForMacOSX10.7.dmg update 1 that I recovered from the latest backup.
    I got it from Apple Support Downloads when it was released.

    Java for Mac OS X 10.7 Update 1 delivers improved compatibility, security, and reliability by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_29
    Unfortunately that link right now leads to the latest Java update.
    If you trust my copy, let me know here. I'll give you the link where you can get it.
    P.S.
    The PKG inside the DMG contains a certificate that expired last March 23rd. So when you lauch it it gives you that advice.
