Another keyboard problem!

Hi. Unfortunately, I broke the return (enter) key on my keyboard off and when i tried to put the scissors back on they broke. I bought a replacement return key from a powerbook site but i realized that i don't have the rubber part under the key cap either. What can I do to fix this? Does my 1 year warranty cover my keyboard? If so, do I bring it in to an apple store? If I do, do they replace only the keyboard without affecting my data? Thank you!

They can replace the keyboard without affecting your data, yes. It won't be covered under warranty because you inflicted the damage as opposed to it being a manufacturing defect.

I'm having a keyboard problem, the g key, t key, and 5 key type random letters and symbols.  i just spent $700 a few monoths ago to a genius [at getting my money] for a logic board after spillin somethin on it.  didnt spill anyqthing time.  shoot.  is this goin to be another major expenditure?  downloaded os x 9.4, hoping that might somehow cure it.  yeah right

    Hi Rob,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your running into an issue with the keyboard on your MacBook Pro. The article linked below provides suggestions that will resolve most keyboard issues like the one you described.
OS X Mavericks: If keys on your keyboard don’t work
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13809
    If other keys don’t work
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, then click “Text to Speech.” If “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” is selected, deselect it or click Change Key to select another key.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Mouse & Trackpad. Make sure Mouse Keys is off. If Mouse Keys is on, pressing keys in the numeric keypad moves the pointer instead of entering numbers.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Input Sources. Select “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu and make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected. To see the keyboard layout, click Keyboard, then choose “Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar.”
    I hope this helps.

  • Two keyboards problem

    I'm frustrated:
I followed the instructions in the printed manual p 91 when trying to connect my two keyboards.
The "bottom one" functions perfectly on MIDI ch 1 - giving a piano sound.
The second one doesn't give any sound - Mainstage's MIDI information window says that it receives information on ch. 16 (set by me in learn mode) - and the keys on screen moves correctly when I play. But I can't get any sound out after assigning a channel strip and setting it in the channel strip inspector.
Is my question described accurately so that anyone can help? (being non-native in English)
    regards
    Martin

Here in America, it's called a PEBCAK- problem exists between chair and keyboard. I'm having serious trouble getting the B3 to work correctly, and I'm sure I'm overlooking something, too.
I've got two keyboards- the upper sends on MIDI channel 1, the lower on channel 2. The EVB3 keyboard is set to Multi. When I press a key on either keyboard, I see it depress on screen, but I'm only getting sound out of the top keyboard- nothing from the bottom.
I can get it to work in Logic, but not in MainStage. What am I missing?
FWIW, the upper keyboard is an Edirol PCR, connected via USB to the computer (20" Intel iMac 2.4, 4GB RAM). The lower keyboard is a Radio Shack MD-1160 that is connected via MIDI to the Edirol FA-101 that's my audio/MIDI interface. I just reversed the channels on them, and the PCR will output audio as channel 2 (lower manual), but nothing out of the Radio Shack.
I just rerouted the Radio Shack's MIDI so it goes through the PCR. Same thing- I can SEE that both keyboards are acting as they should, but can't HEAR anything out of the lower manual.
    (some time passes)
OK- I've been playing with it some more. So far, I've been working with a Starter Concert. I opened up one of the presets and played a while on the Radio Shack keyboard set to MIDI channel all. Then I added another keyboard to the preset, and set the channels to 1 for the upper and 2 for the lower. Now I can see both keyboards receiving the notes I'm playing, but I can only hear the LOWER one.
Back in Logic, everything works as it should. Maybe I've got a bug, and need to reinstall? At any rate, it's time to do some yard work and get away from this #$^$^(@$%^#$%^& computer.
I'd sure appreciate any advice y'all can give me on this. I'm at my wits' end.
    Thanks,
    Bonzer

  • Keyboard problem unsolvable, or just challenging ?

As I seem to have run out of help on the previous thread I will restate the problem and the steps I have taken to troubleshoot it:
    Problem:
I have the Apple Keyboard which came with my 1st generation Intel iMac. It has a numeric keypad, but no num-lock key. The "." key and the number keys do not make input to any of my applications. The =, /, *, -, and + keys on the numeric keypad work as they should.
    Steps I've taken:
    1) Pressing those keys with Keyboard Viewer open indicates the keys are connected to the system.
    2) Repaired permissions from Safe Boot
    3) Repaired disk from OS startup disk
    4) Changed USB ports
    5) Re-started computer (many times)
    6) Tried another keyboard (a brand new one)
Inasmuch as steps 2 through 6 did not result in my being able to use the keys in question, it is reasonable to assume that there is some, as yet undiagnosed, software problem.
Is there anyone out there who has a new idea for me to try ?

If you provided the latest OS X upgrade Snow Leopard 10.6.x a completely erased, or
zero-overwritten, partition mapped GUID, and formatted HFS+ free space for an all
new complete install, without any chance of the former system problems or any odd
user account glitches from your former content, a new system should have been a
good test-bed to further diagnose any (hardware?) agent; if glitches survived the event.
To upgrade over a problematic computer configuration appears to have only added
a new level of mystery to the mixture of previous system problems in the early Intel
based Core Duo computer. Not sure, but at one point some Core Duo (not C2D)
models owners had issue when upgraded past Leopard 10.5.8. There may have
been some Firmware update offered, but I have not followed their development.
    You should have a complete pre-upgrade bootable clone of the iMac's Tiger system;
to revert to or at least to use for file recovery purposes or migration purposes; then
you could totally erase the computer's hard disk drive and have Disk Utility write
zeros over the expanse of its capacity; so if there is a chance of corruption issues,
you can mitigate them or at least try. Before upgrading to a system so far advanced.
A clone backup gives you an ability to actually revert to a former state, via re-clone.
There have been some instances of user experience where Leopard 10.5.8 worked
well in a class of Intel-based Mac computer, but Snow Leopard did not do as well.
So, you may need to do a thorough effort to restore a working system from scratch.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Laptop Keyboard problem, some keys get randomly ignored

    Hello,
This is a problem that occurs with all razer blade notebooks when running linux (does not occur in Windows 8); some keys get randomly ignored when you type at your normal speed, and it is very frustating especially when typing passwords or programming. At the moment we have to type very slowly in order to get all keystrokes caught. The keyboard has antighosting technology, maybe that info is useful.
This is the further we went in this post:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161634
In that post, a forum partner proposed to modify "drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-core.c" and set "interval = 1;" right after the mouse pooling interval was set, around line 1134 of the file. When we use that modified kernel, the keyboard feels a little better but i still get ignored keys when typing at normal speed.

Does anyone know, based on their experience, what could be the cause of the keyboard malfunction?
Does this type of error occur for some other notebooks too?
It would be great if someone could point me in the right direction for where to look.

Hi. Well in this case the problem is with the Razer Blade Laptop's keyboard, therefore i cannot choose another port. You gave me an idea however, i will try to get any usb keyboard, plug it into the razer blade and make sure it works so that i can discard any major problem.

  • Probook 4530s keyboard problems

We have a probook 4530s that the keyboard has started randomly on it's own typing in caps and duplicating characters.  The caps lock is not on when this starts happening, and the user has a hard time getting it to stop.
Any suggestions for what is causing this?

I got my 4530s 2 months ago and the keyboard problems started right away. The keys that are used in gaming to direct my character were repeating causing my character to to be very eratic. As the keys spring back into place and the game was just updated, I thought the problem was in the game. After finding out that there was no problem in the game, I called HP and they sent a new keyboard. Problem solved? NO! The new keyboard was better, but still had the same basic problem AND I could see key repeats in MSWord. Called again, had trouble convincing the girl rep that I knew what I was talking about, but they sent another. Fixed?  NO! The new keyboard is slightly better, but the problem still exists. While typing this I experienced for the 1st time the caps issue. If there is a resolution, I hope they come up with it soon. This is very frustrating. F.Y.I.  I spent 30 years in the computer industry.

  • Keyboard problem now no boot

Hello Bought a KT4V Ultra and it worked ok for a while then lost support for the keyboard.  So took it straight back to the shop, replaced it with a KT4V MS-6712 with bios release 1.7.  Plugged it all in and still no keyboard...got mouse as its USB.  I tried the swap sockets into the mouse port and tested various combinations of ps/2 using the mouse port etc.  Neither works.  Anyway loaded windows OK with the aid of the mouse as log in screen requires keyboard...(frustrating!)  So maybe I thought it was shipped dodgy but coincidence both types of board were knackered from the same shop.  So then I took out the cmos battery and reset cmos and powered back up. Also removed all hardware except for 1 stick 2700 512 DDR RAM, Radeon 9500 agpx8, AMD 2100 XP (which was showing as 1700+ before it wont reload!) Now of course I have a real problem as I never touched any cmos settings without the keyboard support I was unable to....Now all it does it  start (without keyboard still) and says wrong cmos setting press F2 or something to continue AND I CANT!!!  Its driving me crazy and at the moment it sitting with the cmos battery out for longer with the jumper setting clearing and will try it again tomorrow.  The cmos however gives me a BEEP BEEP (pause) BEEP.  I have swapped the RAM over and tried it no avil also tried it without the radeon and put in an old Gforce MX400 Still nothing.....I wanted to do a clean install of XP but without keyboard access couldnt now its just got worse...HELPPPPPPPPPP!!!! cant flash the bios cause u need to press keys, Will a usb keyboard work?  Still the shonky old computer i cobbled together out of all the old bits enabled me to post this message.....IM FUMING and the shop is 60 miles away where i bought the board been twice now, rather save me money and buy a decent board!!!!

Have you tried another Keyboard? If you loose keyboard control on two mobo's I would suspect the Keyboard.
What kind of Keyboard do you have? To be safe it should be a simple PS/2 type keyboard. (Not USB).
(I had problems installing WinXP on a KT4V with a Microsoft keyboard, the board did not recognize a function key (F2 ?) in order to start install)

  • Migrated User Account Keyboard Problem AFTER Login

I have a brand-new MacBookPro (with multi-touch trackpad) that came with Leopard preinstalled. When I first started up the new computer, I set up a new administrator user account first. Then I used Migration Assistant to migrate my primary user account from my PowerBook G4, which is running the latest version of Tiger. I can log into my old user account with the same password I have always used, and everything looks fine--my old desktop is there, my Mail, iCal and iTunes settings all look great, etc.--but I can't use the keyboard. I can use the mouse to click on menus; the keys for the volume and backlight controls work, and some of the keys on the right side of the keyboard work (which seems particularly weird), but I can't do anything else with the keyboard. When I log out of the account and try to go back to the new admin account, the keyboard no longer works at all until I reboot. If I go directly into the new admin account, the keyboard is fine; it only starts locking up AFTER I log into my old user account. I have not had any keyboard problems with any other user accounts that I have created from scratch on the MacBookPro, nor have I had problems with the other user accounts I migrated from the PowerBook. After consulting with an Apple rep on the phone, I have tried the following things:
    1. deleting my migrated keychain file on the problem user account and letting it make a new login keychain;
    2. deleting the original default keychain on the PowerBook and re-running the Migration Assistant;
    3. deleting the problem user on the MacBookPro using the option of creating a disk image, and then creating an empty file in the Users folder with the same name as the problem user account and then dragging the files from the disk image into the folder, and then creating a new version of the user account with the same name, password, etc.;
    4. running Disk Utility to fix permissions (multiple times);
    5. I have completely erased and reinstalled the system on the MacBookPro using the install DVDs twice. The first time, I ran Migration Assistant immediately after the "Welcome," and the second time I set up a new administrator account first and then ran Migration Assistant.
    6. I have also tried the steps outlined in this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306840.
    7. I have tried moving my user files over by hand but then I have a ton of permission problems and I was having trouble getting my Mail settings/mailboxes to move over properly. I've spent hours and hours on this.
I have NEVER had so much trouble upgrading to a new computer or a new OS in all the years I've owned Macs! What am I missing???

Well...I'm not sure which of the following fixed my problem, but once I realized it was something to do with the numeric keypad keys, I went into both the Keyboard & Mouse preferences and the Universal Access preferences and I made sure that I set everything back to the default settings. I suspect that going to Keyboard&Mouse-->Keyboard Shortcuts and clicking on "Restore Defaults" is what did the trick. So far, so good. I hope this helps somebody else; I couldn't find anything else anywhere about this somewhat quirky problem.

  • Keyboard problems out of the box with iPhone 3g

My iPhone 3g is showing strange keyboard behavior, typically starts when launching the SMS app.
The "P" and Backspace keys, the keys on the rightmost part of the touch area, are non-responsive. The issue will correct itself after 15 mins or so, but it's become very annoying.
I've made sure I'm not touching any other part of the screen as a possible cause. Showed it to and had three other iPhone users see what I see and they all agree it seems like a bug, just to confirm it's not me.
Took it to the Apple Store and of course the iPhone behaves when showing it to the Genius.
Anyone else experienced keyboard problems with 2.0 firmware?

Well, I took my 16GB iPhone 3g (white) back to the Apple Store today and the Genius looked it over -- said that's the first keyboard problem he's seen come in and mentioned that it was strange the "dead zone" on the touch screen was vertical since, according to him, most "dead zones" tend to be horizontal areas. He said the touch screen matrix is laid out in three horizontal bands on the screens.
Bottom line: he gave me a new working iPhone 3g.
He did mention that all returned iPhone 3g's are being sent directly back to the iPhone 3g engineering team for full "autopsies", not just sent back to factory for refurb. He said they want to fully diagnose and understand what defects are out there so as to solve the root cause moving forward.

  • HELP! Keyboard problems

    HELP!
I have tried all sorts of things, like:
    - removed syst prefs to desktop then restarted
    - un-done, re-done, re-booted various options in International and Keyboard & Mouse
    - run disk utility, both from startup CD AND in target disk mode
    - ran permission smasher
    - swapped out different keyboards and/or mice
...but these are my keyboard problem symptoms:
    - numeric keypad not working
    - the shift key (for caps & shift characters) not working&
    - commands (i.e., "Select All") not working
...the keyboard does not work in any native Mac appl (e.g., Mail, Safari, TextEdit).
The only time my keyboard will work correctly is when I create a test new user and log-in. So it's just for me as user.
Also, oddly enough, keyboard prefs do not show up anywhere.
Anyplace where I should see something, such as
Library>preferences - there should be a file com.apple.keyboardtype.plist --- there is no file in any of the folders anywhere.
All of a sudden the keyboard stopped working, but the mouse attached to it still works. I have no clue what to do to fix it and my AppleCare has ran out.
Other things I have noticed and tried:
    - running tech tool
    - repairing permissions
    - switching usb ports for the keyboard from the back of the display
    - removing the mouse from the back of the keyboard
    - unplugging everything but the keyboard and mouse
    ...any ideas???

    Hi, DR -
The numeric keypad not working sounds like MouseKeys became enabled in the Universal Access part of System Preferences.
The Shift key and Command keys not working sounds like Sticky Keys became enabled in the Universal Access part of System Preferences.
Check the Universal Access control pane in System Preferences - if those features are checkmarked, try unchecking them.

  • Keyboard problems with Enter, delete, backspace, and right/left arrows

In some applications, such as Yahoo and this message block right now !!, when composing a message, the arrow keys and delete, backspace keys become non responsive. Various ones will work on a random basis.
I am getting double "carriage returns" also. Maybe this is why in Omegle when I press ENTER, it will not post a chat message; it will bring up a scroll box and for me to post the comment, I have to use the mouse to click ENTER.
I have changed batteries in my keyboard, uninstalled /reinstalled Firefox. I have checked the above websites in Chrome and other browsers, and there are no problems.
This has happened before, I don't recall what the solution was or if it just went away.'''

thinkpad keyboard problem - some keys generate multiple keys when pressed
For example, "t" generates "tr", "y" generates "yu", "backspace" generates "backspace" plus "IBM access connections", "m" generates "mn" and "n" generates "mn".  Not all keys are wrong.
For what it's worth, the odd behaviour started shortly after a trip to Miami in which I had a meeting at a cafe in which we were undercover but it was pouring cats and dogs - it was like having a meeting in a sauna - so I am wondering if the high humidity could have caused the behaviour.

In all my games, including browser based flash games, I've found a rather annoying keyboard problem. Whenever I hit a key, the computer believes I have hit a nunber key. If I only hit one key over and over, it cycles through numbers. So if I hit "W", the computer believes that "4" was hit. If i hit "W" again, it believes a "5" was hit, and so on and so forth. It appears that this issue was caused by a Windows Update. I did a system restore, which fixed the problem, but when I shut down, updates were installed, and when I booted up the next day, the issue has returned.
I am currently running games in compatability mode, and that seems to keep the problem at bay, but it's not a complete fix, as certain games do not function properly in compatability mode. I've called Windows, and posted on their forums, but they said to come here. Does anyone know what the permanent fix for this is? Has Lenovo released a fix?

it is actually a security program put in lenovos to prevent keyloggers from
getting your info on what you type into your computer. but to solve this problem,
go to start -> type in msconfig -> enter -> startup -> and uncheck GID
    Desktop Application -> restart.
what the program does is save everything you type as consecutive numbers.
That way people looking at the keyloggers won't be able to see what you
actually type in since they show up as consecutive numbers with no
distinguishable pattern to crack the code. that is why in some games everything
shows up as numbers even tho you type a letter.

    hi ns3035,
Thank You for using Lenovo Community Forums!
I'm Thinking about stuck key or button on your system.
Can you try running Passmark Keyboard Test a key or button will show red on the image if it is being pressed or held down.
Try doing a BIOS Reset as well
Keep on hitting F2 when you turn it on,
Once inside BIOS, hit f9 to load default and f10 to save and exit
    Best Regards
    Solid Cruver

  • Floating keyboard problem

I have this floating keyboard problem. Is there a fix to this?
I jail broke my device and I know it's not anything I downloaded after that because none of the things I downloaded have anything to do with mail or photos. This only happens when I try to send a photo through email. Help please!

Jailbreaking voids the Apple warranty and also means that you will not get any support from Apple, including from this Apple forum. Jailbreaking can't be discussed in this Apple forum.
Unauthorized modification of iOS has been a major source of instability, disruption of services, and other issues
