Another MBPrd Image Retention thread - troubling Apple response

Took my MBPrd that was showing signs of Image Retention to the Apple store today.  When I made my appointment, I clearly put MBPrd with Image Retention in the description.
First Genius I talked to basically told me that the engineers at Apple have said that because of the high-resolution screen, image retention may be a problem.  I prodded a little more and asked her if this was affecting all MBPrd and she said yes, at which point I asked her if I had any options.  After discussing with her for a few minutes, she would not order me a replacement, and because it was outside of the 2 week return period, I could not get my money back.  If that was their answer - why did they allow me to come into the store in the first place!  BTW I've got the 2.6, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD.
Naturally, I was a little peeved, and asked to speak to a manager as I felt it was totally unacceptable on a close to $3000 machine that's a few months old that they wouldn't stand behind their product.
The Lead Genius came out, and gave some more reasonable answers - they don't know what's causing it now, but they have escalated to engineering.  He could get me a replacement if I wanted to go that route, but could not guarantee that the new one would be free of Image Retention problems, and that if it had the same issues, they wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
I politely told him to contact me in two weeks to see if Apple gets any closer to fixing the problem, at which point I'll decide whether I want a new one, or try and get a refund.
In the past, Apple has always stood by their products for me.  I'm absolutely appaled that this was their answer.  As Biggie, said - mo' money, mo' problems...
For those that have gone back to the Apple store - what has been their response to your Image Retention issues?

  • New macbook pro but with Image Retention problem :(

    I've just bought my first ever mac book and really excited to explore it but I just found out that it has IR problem as I have LG screen instead of samsung. I'm just wondering what to do? Should I return it using my 14 day return policy and when I get my money back order a new one assuming the new one might have samsung display? Or should I tell them that it's faulty... and claim warranty?

    Return within the 14-day refund period is always an option but getting another with the same display manufacturer is a problem dependent on the production run the store has in stock.

  • Image Retention (Update OS x 10.10.2

    Hi!!
    I have a iMAC (27-inch, Late 2012) and a few days ago I updated to 10.10.2. Before the update (10.10.1) I have not any problem of Image retention, but after the upgrade to 10.10.2 this problem appears.
    Can anybody help me a little? I try to change the profile color from iMac to another but the problem persists.

  • IPad Mini Retina Image Retention

    A little back story as I've gotten two iPad Airs that don't do this, and none of my other LCD devices do this. 
    I ordered 4 128 gig LTE mini retinas for the fam and opened them up.  The first two I noticed ghosting on from the home screen icons after about 2 minutes and the other two were fine.  But the other two had this horrible backlight issue all along the bottoms of the devices that at startup with the Apple logo it looked like a flashlight was coming up from the bottom (backlight bleed). 
    The devices were swapped by mail and a week later all 4 did the Image retention issue out of the box.  Some with the backlight issue in addition to the IR.  In contacting Apple, I was informed this was standard behavior of the devices and I've seen the notation on their site stating as such.  Yet I've had the genius bar leads say it isn't normal, I've had colleages with retina Macbook pro's had their screens replaced for this issue, and posed the question what do graphic professionals do when they are editing work on their screen and they move windows around and see this ghost imaging.  The answer is they couldn't do this kind of work as photography and video editing require static images to be on screen and I've never seen LCD panels behave this way with such freqency.  So when I'm told this is rare and or acceptable by Apple and this is followed up by that's not normal, it is irritating.  I also know this issue to become worse over time, and Apple also told me it goes away over time.  Another contradiction. 
    So I'll pose a different question.  How many have recieved devices that don't do this retention issue?  The min is much better than the origional Mini with the resolution increase, I'm sure the lower speaker volume can be fixed in a software update as I would assume they are using the same speakers as the origional mini, and I've seen two iPad mini retinas that didn't do this image retention.  But they are seemingly more rare than I've been lead to believe by Apple and online research. 
    Can anyone else recommend a solution?

    Hello,
    I have seen quite a few people complaining about their R13's display showing signs of image retention but no dedicated discussion thread, so here's one.
    Image retention, also known as ghosting, is a problem affecting some displays where images get temporary imprinted on the screen if displayed for a certain amount of time.
    I invite all R13 owners to test their display by setting brightness to maximum and displaying an image with high contrast patterns for around a minute and then switching to a neutral image (plain grey for example).

    If after leaving the pattern on display at full brightness for at least 30 seconds / 1 minute, it remains noticeable after switching to the grey background, the display suffers from image retention.
    Mine shows image retention on the edges for about a minute after displaying the grid for as little as 30 seconds.

    Hi Maxime, Nice Youtube video about the issue. I faced that issue with many touchscreens I tried. Below you will find the most commun explainations I found. You should clearly get an exchange or even better a refund. It is a very important problem. If the reason is link with 1) or 2), it is likely to worsen overtime.    1) There are many technical explanations you could find that are mainly related to bad conception of a laptop. For example:  devices or wires that cause interference with the screen 2) Problems with the screen itself, for example:  dust inside when the screen was manufactured The 2 following explanations was by Jacob Andrew (thx to him) 2) Slow Response Time The response time is the amount of time it takes a single pixel on the screen to change from black to white and back to black. If this response time is more than 10 milliseconds, then you’ll begin to experience ghosting. Most modern monitors and TVs have faster response rates than 10ms. Ghosting is most evident in games or video with a lot of motion. You can sometimes increase the response time by lowering your monitor resolution. 3) Optional featureOn occasion, television and monitors include features to improve picture quality. These tools cause the screen to go through additional steps before the pixels are changed, increasing the response time. Samsung’s digital noise reduction, for example, caused ghosting in some of its earlier LCD televisions. Most TV manufacturers take steps to ensure that their products do not cause ghosting; however, turning off optional features on your television or monitor offers one option for eliminating ghosting. ImNotImprressed   

  • IPad (4th gen) image burn in/image retention

    Has anyone had this issue with image retention or "burn in" on their new 4th gen iPad (lighting connector). I've attached an image taken with my iPhone 4 where I went from messages to "Letterpress" (a word game) where you can still see messages on the grey screen. I turned the iPad off and back on with the same retention being shown on screen. I've only had this thing for two weeks but it seems absolutely ridiculous that this is a problem. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

    Update:
    Took my iPad to my local Apple Store. They said it was image retention and said they hadn't seen this on any devices before. They replaced it for another new one with no fuss or bother.  I have checked the replacement and at the moment it seems ok.
    One thing I have not done yet is to update the software to iOS 6.0.1 I think I will leave iOS 6 (which was on the iPad from new) for the moment to see if all stays ok.  After a few days I will update to iOS 6.0.1 just to see if this is what causes the image retention problem. Hopefully this will not make any difference and all will be fine. Watch this space. . .

  • Is it normal for Plasma Tv's to have image retention

    My Panasonic is 4 months old and lately I have seen image retention from one show to another. I see the retention with the house lights off and when the tv is on a dark screen but then it goes away.

    What you are describing is not image retention, but rather the normal temperature variances of a plasma TV set.
    As a fellow plasma owner, I do recommend stretching all 4:3 material to full screen, for even phosphor wear.

  • Late 2013 iMac and image retention issues

    I just purchased a certified refurb Sept 2013 iMac 27" 3.5GHz i7 3tb. I've already read the image retention advice on the Apple website (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455) and the problem keeps showing up. Additionally, I don't feel that I should have to keep such a close eye on my screen on such a new machine. I'm running a screen saver when I'm not on the computer, and I shut the display down if I'm leaving the computer for the day. I can't even have a desktop picture without seeing a burnt in image of the picture on my screen. Any help would be appreciated.

    Since it has the same warranty as a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with problem. If less than 14 days old, you can return it w/o any questions being asked.

  • "New" iPad display "ghosting"/"image retention"

    My "new" iPad/ipad3 is experiencing intermittent "ghosting" or what apple is calling "image retention:" some elements of a previous image on the display remain faintly even after the display changes.  The retained image does not have to be on the screen very long and I have my auto lock set to the minimum 2 minutes.  I called apple about this and was set up with an appointment at my local apple store.  When I brought my iPad in, it was not experiencing any ghosting, so I didn't really have anything to show, but the "genius" I spoke to said this was normal, even clarifying that they referred to it as image retention, and that it is a short term issue that goes away.  While this has been my experience, that is not something I expect to be normal behavior for an iPad.  It is obviously not mentioned anywhere in the product description and is not in any sort of documentation.  I said as much to the "genius" and said that I would like a replacement that did not have this problem, which would be covered under apple care.  He said all iPads do this so there was nothing he could do.
    Is this really the case?  Is this issue something that just happens and is accepted?  Any pointers on resolving the issue?  Thanks everyone.

    I have exactly the same issue very recently on my iPad2, which already beyond the warranty, I wouldn't expect to have a replacement like you guys do, but I'll try to talk to the "Genius" anyway, otherwise I'll feel I was totally fooled, Apple's products are supposed to be quality, solid and stable, how come it only lasts a year and four months. These image retentions are annoying, sometimes it's way worse than faintly visible. I tried to restart the iPad, but still it comes back when you stay on a image for a minute or so. I googled this problem around Internet, some say that this can be a hardware problem, one person pointed out that the LG screens which was used for the early batches are most likely where the problem come from, but I'm not sure. Apple must give a resonable answer and solution other than saying it's normal. I have been a die-hard Apple fan before this happened. BTW, I am here in Canada.

    Hello everyone. When is Apple going to fix all the image retention issues, or as Apple would call it image persistence? I find it to be horrendous that Apple is calling this "normal". There is nothing normal about having an image ghosted or stuck on your display. I hope Apple gets with LG on this and fixes these issues because a fix is long overdue. This has been plaguing iMacs for years now. I have had 2 iMacs in a row that have had this issue straight out of the box. Can anyone tell me why some IPS displays do this and others do not? Is this because Apple is buying junk from LG?

  • IMac retina 5K with image retention (ghosting) problem?

    I have just ordered CTO iMac retina 5K. After 2 days, I saw the problem as same as MBPr's image retention or ghosting. Is this new iMac defect or bad order ?

    Please read the warranty paperwork that came w/your computer.
    You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.
    You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
    Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems & your concerns. It's what you paid them to do.

  • Screen image retention

    I've been noticing lately some horizontal lines across my screen on my 24" iMac (2 years old)
    The longer the screen is on, the paler it gets but at first it is quite a noticeable shadow. I think is called image retention.
    Is this a repair issue or something that can be resolved via software/workaround ?

    1. Try setting the Display to sleep after 5 or 10 minutes (System Preferences > Energy Saver > Sleep > Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for:)
    2. Set up a Hot Corner to Sleep Display, then when your not using the display or going to be away for a short time Sleep the Display.

  • RMBP with Image Retention

    I bought a Retina Macbook Pro in Portugal about 3 months ago, and i'm having some problems wiht image retention, it wasn't a problem until some days but now i have this like everyday, and some times it persists for more than 1 hour. I would like to know if i can ask for a new Macbook Pro in the US if i have bought mine in Portugal?

  • Chance of retrieving those images off the old Apple TV?

    I have a v1 Aple TV that we just replaced with a new Apple TV. The onlty one showed pics that were no longer in my iPhoto library due to an external HD loss. Is there any chance of retrieving those images off the old Apple TV? Can it be connected and searched via the iMac or another way?

    You'd need to remove the internal drive and connect it to a Mac to do that.
