Another non-functional Imac. (Sorry)

I run OS9.0 on an Imac. This morning,I encountered an error type 41 when I turned it on, and the system specified that it was an error with the time synchronizer. I went through the standard troubleshooting procedures to try and fix the problem myself. Disabling extensions didn't work, so I restarted from the install disk. I swapped out the finder, reset the Pram to the factory defaults, and moved the time synchronizer to the disabled extensions folder.
The same problem continued.
Now, I may have resorted to this tactic too soon, but I decided to use apple software restore on the install disk to perform a clean install, while saving my existing desktop contents to a separate folder. This seems to have made things worse though.
Now, when I turn the machine on, the start up won't proceed. The extensions don't load at all. Instead the start up procedure pauses at the little apple logo, and it just sits there smiling at me as if to taunt me. I've heard of start up and extension failures happening following a major system update, like a transition to mac os x, or a security update, but never from a simple reinstall of existing software. A hardware diagnostic reveals no problems, so I assume that eliminates the possibility that this is due to a battery failure in the motherboard.
I am vey apprehensive about this. I have substantial volumes of data I neglected to back up before this problem and I'm without any external device to make a backup with at the moment anyway.
Can someone please advise me on how to proceed? Your help is greatly appreciated.

It could still be a dead battery, even if the hardware diagnostic revealed no problem.
However, if you have a UMAX scanner, you may want to check out this article: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60834>
"An alert box with a positive or negative error type 41 may appear when certain versions of UMAX scanner software are installed and the computer is waking from sleep mode."

  • Migration Assistant - from non functioning imac to new imac?

My daughter's G5 imac has a bad graphics card (per apple store genius). Logic board is apparently OK but computer can't be used. She has decided to buy new a imac. Her concern is all of the data on her old imac's hard drive which she wants to transfer to the new imac. Normally, migration assitant would do this. However, as stated above, her old imac is not functioning in a normal way. My question: can she use migration assistant even though she can't do anything with her old imac except look at the garbled screen?
She also has an external hard drive that is supposedly up to date with backed up info.
    What are her options?

I read and printed "How to use and troubleshoot Firewire target disk mode". Thanks for that link.
The procedure in that article was for someone who wanted to transfer files between two computers. In my daughter's case the procedure is a little unclear. That is because, if I remember correctly, when you start up a new computer for the first time I'm not sure you see the desktop before the setup assistant starts. I guess one could connect the two computers and start up the new computer and a few seconds later start up the old computer and hold down the T key. That should put the hard drive of the target computer on the desktop of the host (new) computer. But when during the setup process would the setup assistant access the hard drive that would be appearing on the new computer's desktop?
When the setup process was finished, if the old computer's hard drive was not accessed you could then manually select what you wanted to copy. But for some info this can be a tedious process.
It has been a few years but I remember the process as being pretty much automatic starting with the setup assistant and having everything (personnel info, email, bookmarks, etc as well as files) transfered from my old to my new computer. I don't recall putting my old computer into Target Disk Mode to have everything transfered to my new computer. When you are going through the initial setup of a new computer, do you actually have to put the old computer into Target Disk Mode for the setup process to access your old info?

  • Non functioning iMac -- Update

    Hi,
I wrote earlier about my iMac behaving strangely over the past several days, and finally getting to the point where it wouldn't turn on. But I could hear the motor sound that occurs just before the chime (but no chime).
Went to Genius bar this a.m. and it turned on. Back home, ran disk repair and the utility did find a problem with hard drive. Repaired it.
So I thought things might be okay.
Later today, I left for a couple of hours. Came back. iMac asleep. Tried to wake it. It kept dozing. Then I believe it turned itself off.
Tried repeatedly to turn it on. What I heard distinctly was the motor sound but no chime. This motor sound repeated itself 3 to 4 times after I pressed the button. Then the full cycle of this sound diminished to just a faint "effort". This repeated itself over again many times. Then nothing.
(When I had gotten home, I did a full backup with Time Machine. So that's okay.)
Before I lug it back to ApSt, does this behavior ring a bell for anyone. Can you share anything about what I'm looking at, in for? What is causing this behavior? Is it simply a failing hard drive? Could that affect the "ignition"?
    Thanks for any insight.

This a.m tried turning iMac on and it worked. So I was able to do the PRAM reset.
    Worked fine.
I left for a while. It went to sleep and never woke up.
Is that the hard drive? I'm taking back to Genius bar to get a new one.
I guess I'm just trying to pinpoint what the problem is, if anyone out there knows. Could it be something beyond the hard drive? In addition to hard drive?
Don't want to buy a new hard drive if something else is at the root of the problem. Then find out it's a lot more money. So goal is to weigh those costs against cost of new iMac.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Back button is premanently greyed-out and non-functional

I have tried all of the suggested fixes: disabling add-ons and extensions, deleting and re-installing the program, etc... but the back button remains non-functional, even on safe mode and after the last few updates. I cannot use the browser until this problem is fixed, and will continue to use Chrome until it is (even though I hate it and really miss Firefox). Funny thing is, it only happens on my Macbook Pro, running the latest version of Snow Leopard... it doesn't happen on my i7 iMac, running the same version of Snow Leopard.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, and have a great day,
    -Jim

    Hi,
Check the Font AppleGothic.ttf is active and validates using the Font Book app.
if you have to change anything restart the Mac.
If this is not the issue go to ~/Library/Preferences and find com.apple.ichat.plist and Drag it to the Trash and then restart Messages.
The above reply in another thread solved my issue! Namely that my apple gothic font was disabled, breaking the entire Messages app.

  • Home Page Search Is Non-Functional / Not Possible to Restore Previous Session

After the latest update (to version 29), Firefox's default home page search bar has been completely non-functional. Whether I type enter or press Search, nothing happens. Another (possibly related) problem is that the "Restore Previous Session" button is never present. I also cannot restore the previous session by clicking on the History option (it is always greyed out).

I had this and other problems with v29. But after a while everything was working
    again, I hope. BTW;<BR><BR>
I found that after Firefox v29, a LOT of my settings and add-ons were changed /
    reset. Try this;
'''''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]'''''
<BR>While you are in safe mode;<BR>
    '''''Firefox Options > Advanced > General'''''.<BR>
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Check ALL of your setting. Then restart.

  • Wired interface non-functional

So I have a most unusual problem with a mac mini server that is driving me banana's that I hope someone in the Apple community has run into, and found a decent solution..
The mac mini (2.3GHz quad core i7, late 2012) is running 10.9 and server 3.0.1.   I did an upgrade from 10.8 (and whatever the previous version server was)..
Since then the wired ethernet interface (en0) literally stopped working. (Links up, but no connectivity.. no ping, it does not even send an ARP)
    Data points about the problem.
    - It worked flawlessly up until the upgrade to 10.9.
    - wireless interface is still fine, static or dhcp.
    - The IP is statically configured via System preferences - Network.
    - ifconfig in terminal show NO IPADDRESS assigned to the interface.
    - if I reconfigure the interface to DHCP, it will not receive an IP and ends up with an APIPA address..
    - if I go into terminal and 'ifconfig en0 down' then 'ifconfig en0 <IP> up' the interface works again until restart.  It will also correctly display the IP in terminal.
    - If I reset, it goes back into this same state (network preferences shows proper config, ifconfig does not, and the interface is non functional)
    - If I then go to cli, and manually ifconfig down then up, all is good again..  Doing so from system prefs has no affect..
Here is where it gets really interesting, and why I am convinced this is a software issue..     I did a clean install of 10.9 and Server on an external USB disk, and things work exactly as expected if I boot from that Volume..  If I boot from the internal drive, Its in the broken state again..
This absolutelty tells me its some kind of software issue, and I am out of ideas short of wiping the internal drive, and reloading all the data from scratch..
Anyone else run into this?  If yes, were you able to fix it without wiping/reloading?

First, thank you for taking the time to respond and offering great ideas..
I'd delete the interface & recreate it.
In 'System Preferences > Network tab' select the ethernet, click the - button. Then add it again. Reboot & see if it has any effect.
    - Had no affect..  More accurately, it works the same as doing ifconfig down/up in cli, where the interface will work again until the next reboot.
See what appears in Console (Spotlight search for it) in the 'All messages" section when you remove connect the ethernet.
    - Log messages are below..  Interestingly, I do not get the failure messages that I have highlighted in red on another machine that is is also running 10.9, with server loaded.

Have you tried changing the port on the switch it is connected to?
    - Yes, for ease of testing I have it plugged directly into my MacBook Pro  (I also tried new cable first )
Does safe mode have any effect?
    - No, Same results.
Again, booting the machine from a clean install on a USB disk, does not show the issue..    I’ve got a lot of data on the machine, so I am doing anything I can to avoid wiping and reloading it all..  Ive added the output of etrecheck, in case its of any help.

  • Apple mouse ball non-functional

Is there a way to disassemble Apple Mouse to clean out the roller ball? Tried rolling it on cloth many times but no longer works.

I have a later USB Apple mouse, and the roller collects enough dust to become annoyingly non-functional in one direction or another within a period of 4-6 months. After the first time it happened, I realized that since the outer bezel was glued on, Apple did not intend for me to service the mouse, even though I knew exactly what was wrong. I took it in and the Apple Store gave me another one. The same thing happened again, but I am now nowhere near an Apple store, and the mouse is out of warranty anyway, so I fixed it myself. What a nightmare. Unlike the mouse shown in the video, the cables connecting one circuit board to the other are much shorter, and unplugging and re-plugging them is like trying to add mustard to a fully assembled ham sandwich without removing the bread.
In the good old days of user-serviceable mousies, all you had to do to clean the tracking ball and its contacts was turn a bezel 1/4 turn with your fingers and out popped the ball. Now of course since the Apple mouse uses a laser instead of a ball to track movement, that's no longer necessary. But the scrolling ball could easily be designed for simple removal. Having to break open a glued-together component and go through the virtual equivalent of micro surgery just to clean a ball and rollers (in a ridiculously complex assembly) that are just going to get dirty and start malfunctioning within months is absolutely ridiculous. The scroll wheel, being on top, will collect dust internally no matter how operating-room clean you keep your office.
This mouse is obviously designed to be non-user serviceable. And frankly, what computer service technician would go through all that hassle without charging you $50 (the cost of the mouse) anyway? So essentially the mouse has a tricky bit of built-in obsolescence that would force all but the most determined do-it-yourselfer to just go out and buy another one. I thank you for the video anyway, but this operation is not for the faint of heart, so I'm quite sure that very few people will actually try to clean their scroll wheel assembly, which is a shame and a waste.

  • Ver33 Unresponsive Script popup is NON FUNCTIONAL

My continuing problems with getting FF to Restore Session are here:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1022861?esab=a&s=&r=0&as=s
Using Safari to send this. FF is locked up again...
Went Not Responding on yet another tab. This one said "waiting for" server for a long time, then it changed to "connected to"
Then the Unresponsive Script popup appeared -- but as always, it is NON FUNCTIONAL. None of the 3 buttons work. None are blue.
I'm letting FF sit there for a while to see if the damn button ever turns blue...

  • Helvetica regular font CS6 Yosemite non-functional

I have two Mac computers, both using Yosemite and CS6 suites and the Helvetica regular font on both of them is non-functional at this time.  The font will work on other applications like Word, and even show up under the menus on CS6 programs, but when you select Helvetica regular you get an error.  If an old file uses the Helvetica regular font, the file won't print or even save until the font is replaced with another font.  The font checks out as ok in the font book program.  The other Helvetica variations like Light, bold, etc. work fine.  As far as i have been able to discover, all of the other fonts work as well.  Both computers work identically, so I can't imagine the font file is corrupted...
    Any suggestions?

    kitcmac,
Is it a free Helvetica font or something, or is it the genuine one from Linotype?
In the former case, you may be out of luck: Illy is particularly particular about the quality of fonts, because she can work with them at a deeper/higher level than most, so you can easily have a font that works in all other applications, but Illy refuses to recognize it as a font.
Some failing fonts discussed in earlier threads have turned out to have rather basic flaws, such as redundant, superfluous, or (if I remember rightly) even stray points, or other clear errors in the paths that they consist of.
If it is a free one, you may need to get the real thing or look for similar fonts that Illy is willing to work with.

  • Canon iP4500 Printer Utility missing/ non-functional

I own a G5 iMac & MB Pro. Ever since I installed Time Capsule, I cannot access the Canon iP4500 *Printer Utility.* It seems to be missing or has become non-functional. I should note that this printer is plugged into Time Capsule. Any ideas as to what has happened to the utility?

To my knowledge, the utilities from the printer manufacturers have only worked if the printer is connected to the computer; you could ask Canon, but I expect they'll say that the utility wasn't designed for this type of connection.
    Hope this helps.

  • RDP Port Forwarding non-functional

OK, so I'm having yet another issue with my RV220w. I thought this would be a wise buy, but I keep finding reasons to hate myself for buying this router.
Anyway, I need to forward port 3389, Windows Remote Desktop Protocol to one of my internal servers.  I have defualt NAT, defualt firewall, etc. etc.  I have seen documentation that says that Firewall -> Port Forwarding is non-functional, so I attempt to set up port forwarding via Firewall -> Access Rules.  I did not see "RDP" or any other obvious acronym for Remote Desktop Protocol in the services list.  So, I made a custom service, called RemoteDP, TCP protocol, port 3389 to 3389.
No, I cannot RDP to my server from WAN.  What gives?  This was easily achieved with a cheap NETGEAR router from 2005.
    Very confused, and therefore disappointed.

Nothing works. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

Hello arindamd and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Sorry to hear you're having an issue with the sound on your device.
To rule out a software issue, backup your data (see KB12487 How to back up the data on a BlackBerry smartphone) then follow the steps in KB11320 How to perform a clean reload of the BlackBerry Device Software for Windows or KB19915 Perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software on a Mac computer).
Before any software is restored test the sound recorder.
If no sound is recorded then it's likely the issue may be a hardware one in which case you will need to contact your point of sale for hardware repair options.
    Hope this helps.

  • Calendar has been non-functional for hours, with small screen saying "Moving calendars to server account..." Help?

Calendar on Mavericks MacPro has been non-functional for hours, with small screen saying "Moving calendars to server account..." How can I restore its function?

Sorry. I found some other advice that solved the problem ere I saw your response.
    The advice was:
Go to Finder. Holding "Option" key, find Library in "Go" pull down menu.   In Library. Select Calendars. To desktop, drag all files with the word "cache." Then go to Preferences (still in Library) and drag to desktop "com.apple.ical.plist".  Restart. Now Calendar is working perfectly, and rechecking under Library, the caches files and the com.apple.ical.plist  that were dragged to the desktop have reappeared in Calendars and Preferences.
All is well. Many thanks for your reply! Sorry that I did not get to check it out.

  • Page Published As Portlet is Non Functional

    Portal Version 3.0.9.8.2 on Win2k
We have several workgroups each of which have their own page with tabs and numerous portlets. Workgroup 'A' (WGA) has a need to seed workgroup 'B's (WGB) page. Published WGB page as a portlet and added it to WGA's default page. The portlet page works normally on WGA's page until any customization is done to WGA's page (including customizations unrelated to the WGB page portlet).Again, after any customization has been done to WGA's page, the WGB portle page becomes inoperable in the tabbed areas. It is notable that this is happening with TABBED pages. In this case, both WGA and WGB's page include tabs.
    To reproduce:
    1. Create a page with tabs and portlets (page 'a').
    2. Publish page 'a' as a portlet.
    3. Include portlet on another page (page 'b') in default layout.
    4. Open page 'b'.
    5. Use page 'a' as portlet on page 'b' (should function normally).
    6. Customize page 'b' by adding, deleting, hiding, etc. anything to any of the other tabs.
    7. Use page 'a' as portlet again (should be non functional).
    Is this a bug?

    Hi,
This is not happening 30984. May be this is a bug. Try applying the latest patch 30984.
    Thanks,

  • S10 HW 1/06, bge driver non-functional

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with a new installation of Solaris 10 (HW 1/06) on a Fujitsu Siemens ESPRIMO P5905. It's a fairly new model x64 box. The system installed fine, but the on-board Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet is non-functional. I've tried both the Broadcom bcme driver and the Sun bge driver, plus I've installed the latest patches from Sunsolve (118844-30, 122028-02) with no luck. The system finds the card and appears to receive packets but not send.
Is there any way I can report a bug without a Support Contract from Sun?
The card is an on-board PCI-E chip and works fine under Linux 2.6 or Windows Server 2003. The PCI ID is pci11e4,1677 which is listed in /etc/driver_aliases for the latest (patched) bge driver.
One other detail are the following messages from the bge driver on load:
    ddi_intr_get_supported_types(): Returned 3
    Using legacy interrupt type
    bge_add_legacy_intrs
Thanks in advance for any help...
