Are Windows machines supported on networks powered by Xserve? Powered? You know what I mean.

Makes no real sense? An XServe is dedicated Server hardware. What makes it a server more than anything else is the Software installed - OSX Server. Perhaps your question should be: "Does OSX Server/XServe support PC Clients?" The answer is yes. Samba/CIFS/NT Services have been available on all versions of Apple Server OS going right back to IP Manager. If you want to go beyond this and ask the question: "Does OSX Server behave just like Active Directory?" The answer is not really. It can provide Network based Profiles but that's about it as there is nothing built-in that resembles Global Policy Objects (GPOs). OSX Server can and does provide DHCP and DNS Services along with a host of other Services mostly specific to the Apple platform but not exclusively so.

Ultimately a better question might be: "What is OSX Server going to give you that you're not going to get from an equivalent Windows Server?" First, I want to clear up some vocabulary issues. After Effects is not intended for editing video. Editing involves cutting shots together to tell a story. Premiere Pro edits video. While you technically can cut video together in AE, Premiere is much, much better for that.
After Effects is used for creating shots - visual effects, compositing, motion graphics, animation, color correction, color grading, etc.
What exact version number of AE (down to the decimal points) are you using? Plus the questions Todd asked, plus the info in the link he gave.
Also, if you're new to AE, you should really start here. This resource will give you a foundation in how to actually use After Effects that will probably clear up your current problem and prevent much more frustration in the future.

I want to get a sound card that will support asio drivers and the SB Audigy 2 ZS is looking good. It supports asio drivers. My question is what is the difference from a recording point of view between the X-FI extreme and the SB Audigy 2ZS. As far as I can see,nothing. Also where do you draw the line between asio supported cards and non asio cards? The most important aspect of a recording card that works/plays well is the asio drivers. Everything else is obviously related to the more money you spend the higher the sampling rates and maybe even DSP effects.
Anyway the rig I use is used for playing music, gaming and making home DVD.s. The sound quality of a recorded analogue video needs to well recorded and thats where the SB Audigy 2ZS or X-FI Extreme come in.

So, if you record only DVD quality (24-bit/96 kHz) then there are not big differences.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. More update on y situation. Now on both the IPAD and IPAD2 I can not got to view my purchase History, it says it can not connect to the ITUNES store, but yet I can still d/l apps and can view my account etc etc etc.

Hello Everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to networking so please bear with me. I have a WRT54GS w/SpeedBooster. My family an I recently took a trip. We've been getting a lot of bad weather here in the Midwest so I chose to unplug everything when we left. I fired up my laptop tonight and it did not automatically connect to my network like it usually does so I refreshed the network list and mine will not show up. However, an unsecured network with a really good signal does show up (I'm not sure if it's mine or not). Anyway, this has never happened before so I don't know where to start. Any help would be greatly apprciated. Thanks. Jon

go to My Network Place. You will see a monitor next to a globe with the name Linksys wrt54gs. click on it and it will take you to the sign in page for your router.
Vista
Go to Network. You will see router Linksys wrt54gs. right click on it, then click on view device webpage. you will be on the sign in page for your router.
Use admin or your password to sign in
Next click on wireless
Set wireless mode to mixed
Change network name from linksys to ?
enable ssid
save settings
click on wireless security
Set security mode to wpa2 personal
Set new password
save settings
Go to laptop
Find new network
right click on network name
click on properties
change your properties to match those on router under wireless security

Restore your new iPad from your most recent backup of your iPad2 in iTunes when you set it up, and then set up your wife's iPad2 as new device in iTunes by clicking on 'restore' on the main summary screen.
Alternatively, you can just go to 'Settings>Reset>Erase all Contents and Settings'.

I cannot figure out why only even no. lines are being read. I inserted a breakpoint at the line

Another RAM question / sorry haha

I operate an early 2008 MacPro im going to upgrade.
I currently have 4GB of RAM - 4 x 1GB sticks.
I could simply buy 4 extra sticks of 1GB which fills up the 8 slots - all being matched and evenly distributed across the risers etc.
What i was wondering, what if i was to get 2 x 2GB sticks -
would i install the 2 x 2GB on the spare 2ports on riser A, OR
Do i install the 2x2GB on riser A and move the 4 x 1GB on B, OR
Do i leave the 4 x 1GB across the 2risers and install a 2gb stick on A and the other on B - is that a matched pair?
As you can see - even with all the memory posts in this forum im still no clearer in my own situation, if anyone could be kind enough to point me in the right direction it would be greatly appriciated.

I found a discussion (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=421391) that it saying in essence that a matching (suitable) pair of RAM sticks should be installed at the bottom (moving the exisiting ones up, if need be - but you should have free slots); you can find out by going to the Apple in your finder bar, clicking "About This Mac" and then "More Info"; under "memory" (in the new window) it will tell you the empty slots.

Best way to manage pictures on HDD? Sorry I'm new to this...

Please excuse what could be a dumb question, but after 20years of using Windows, I have move to my first Mac ever, and to be honest I absolutley love it and wish I'd done it earlier, although am struggling getting used to menu's etc, but after 20yrs on PC, only expected.
My question as a newbie is I have over 30,000 images/photos that I have backed up from my PC and I'm trying to work out the best way to organise the folders, etc. Traditionally I have simply added them into the MyPictures Folder in Windows and just created new albums, which I know I can do on OSX as well (Pictures Folder), but everyone seems to point to use iPhoto..
Could someone let me know what are the benefits of importing them all into iPhoto versus using the Pictures Folder and also is it best to manage them as Events or create Albums within iPhoto?
Again I do apologise if it's a simple question, I've spent 3hrs trying to find answers, but none seem to explain why not to use the pictures folder...

Filing is about Finding Things. Iphoto gives you many, many more ways to find your photos than storing files in the Finder.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 20k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Try that in the Finder
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
Again, try that in the Finder.
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
Other advantages: iPhoto is integrated throughout the Operating System: in *every Open... or Attach... dialogue* you can access your Library. iPhoto is a useful photo editor too, and if you want to use a more powerful one:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Add to that: Slideshows, Books, Calendars etc.
As Larry says, make a Library and import 100 pics, see what happens and explore. By all means post back if you need more.

Dumb question but I'm new to this

Hello all, what is the difference between saving a song as a song or project,,what is the benefit if any of saving it as a song?,, stupid question i know but i'm new to this stuff-- thanks!

1. There are very few times when saving as a song would be prefered (making a backup or template maybe). When you open a new song, save it as a project the first time. After that, you can just hit "save".
2. You should delete any audio you don't need from the Audio window. If you just delete it from the Arrange view, it's really not deleted, the regions are just removed. It's best not to delete audio from the Finder either, but to use the Audio window. In the Audio window there's an option Edit > Select Unused that shows which regions and files are not being used. Then select Audio File > Delete File(s).

Use the Rectangular Marquee tool to draw out the edge to be blurred. Feather the selection. Here I feathered 50 px (note that feathering makes the borders of the selection appear rounded).
Invert the selection so that the edge is now selected, and apply a Gaussian Blur:
The reason for feathering is to soften the edge of the blur. The amount of feathering and amount of the Gaussian Blur is simply trial-and-error.

Folder icons keep reappearing whenever I make a new bookmark. closing window and opening new one eliminates them again. is there a fix for this?

I asked this question months ago but have received no replies. I ran the original de-iconizer but as soon as I select "Bookmark this page" all the folder icons reappear. I can close the window and open a new one to get a de-iconized browser window but am looking for a fix for this.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
