Another object style question...

I have designated ad space sizes I need to use over and over.  What type of style do I use to create the different ad space frames?

Object Styles cannot define the size of the objects they are applied to, only the appearance of them and, when using Anchored Objects, their position. The only exception is text frame, which can have a preset column width and number of columns. If you want a text frame to be 2 inches wide, then give it a fixed column width of 2 inches. Then length is unaffected.

  • Should I use Embed or Object - quick question...

    Hi all,
    I've got a few .swf files on my site. One of them uses the following code:
    <object style="float:left;" id="intro" name="intro"
    type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
    data="<?php echo $siteurl; ?>/intro_movie/intro.swf" width="300"
    height="188">
    <param name="wmode" value="image" />
    <param name="movie" value="<?php echo $siteurl; ?>/intro_movie/intro.swf" />
    </object>
    Another one uses the following:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var flashvars = {};
    var params = {};
    var attributes = {};
    swfobject.embedSWF("<?php echo $siteurl;  ?>/swf/testimonials.swf", "_testimonials", "405", "43", "9.0.0", "expressInstall.swf", flashvars, params, attributes);
    </script>
    <div id="_testimonials">
    <a href="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" title="Get flashplayer">
    <img src="http://www.adobe.com/images/shared/download_buttons/get_flash_player.gif" width="112" height="33" alt="Get Flashplayer" border="0" />
    </a>
    </div>
    On a computer recently the first example showed up fine but the second example didn't show up at all.
    I just wondered what the correct way to show .swf files is on a webpage.
    I'm very sorry if this is a stupid question but any help you could give me on this would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks
    John Thornley ;-)

    Thank you for your reply.
    I should clarify that both of those examples are working on my machine. However, on another machine only the top example showed up at the bottom example caused 404 errors as it was trying to load expressInstall.swf which wasn't in the directory.
    This confused me as I wondered if there was any detriment to just having all my swf on my site integrated using the top method?
    I didn't write the bottom example and I don't really understand it fully. I'm not sure whether my best move is to just convert everything to the top example or whether I should try and find a copy of "expressInstall.swf" and try and get the bottom example working on this other machine?
    Which is the correct way?
    Thanks again for your continued support
    Cheers

  • Exporting Objects Style Manager file? And Overriding Preset Defaults?

    Hi,
    We received our upgrade of Captivate 5 from Captivate 4.  I noticed the Captivate 5 does not use design template as it is replaced with Object Style Manager.  I have a question, how do I override objects styles preferences presented to us from a vendor with my department's standard design template?  Also, we have two copies of licensed Captivate softwares installed (One in Austin, TX and one in Washington DC).
    What I am asking is it possible to export a full Style Manager file from one location and share this file with other computer where 2nd copy is installed?  I don't want to export INDIVIDUALLY as I am looking for a full, and complete export?
    Secondly, when we receive a Captivate project from a vendor, they have their own object design preferences and we don't want to use their preferences if we present this simulation onto our Learning Content Management System (LCMS) as we want to override preset defaults with our standard design template, is it also possible?
    I want to make sure that we exhaust all of our options before we downgrade to Captivate 4 from Captivate 5.
    Thanks for taking your time reading this and assistance in advance!

    As you've noted, Cp5 doesn't use Design Templates, and neither does it have anything exactly equivalent to CSS or style sheets that can be applied quickly and easily across multiple projects, as you can do with web pages.
    You can export all styles from a current Captivate 5 project and import the entire style set into another Cp5 project.  However, in current Cp5 functionality the imported styles do not overwrite existing styles that may have the same name, and this includes the default styles.  What you end up with is a lot of additional styles that have the same name with a number appended to the end to differentiate them from existing styles.  Do this once or twice and things can get very messy very quickly.
    We've logged a request for Adobe to consider adding the ability for authors to choose whether or not to overwrite existing styles with identical names on import.  Hopefully this will happen soon.  For the present however, you need to work around the issue as best you can.
    If your vendor sends you a project with an existing set of styles that are customised versions of the default styles, my suggestion is that you create your own style set with unique names (e.g. a two or three letter prefix to identify them in the Object Style Manager lists)  and then import the entire set as a single file into your projects.
    I'm afraid that the bad news is that, since you cannot overwrite styles on import, you will need to apply your new set of styles one by one.  You can use the Apply This Style To option to change all objects of a given style over to your new style, but it's still a rather tedious process.
    There is no downgrade option from Captivate 4 to Captivate 5.  You cannot save a Captivate 5 file as Captivate 4 format. No Captivate version has ever been able to do this as far as I can recall.

  • Is there a way to set an outer glow size to % to crete an object style?

    Hi, i have an effect that (an outer glow) and now it's perfect on my graphic that is 1 in X 1.5 in. Except that i will need to have multiple version of this grahic at different sizes, i want to know if there is a way to create an object style taht will make the same effect if i have different graphics at different sizes (without having to import the graphic at the same size and then scale it).
    Thanks!

    The only way I know to scale an effect with the art in ID is if the art is linked. You could do this with an Illustrator file, for example, or make the art in ID as a separate file, then place it into another document and scale.

  • Best-practice for use of object styles to manage image text wrap issues when aiming at both print and EPUB output?

    I have a work-flow question about object styles, text-wrap, and preparing a long document with lots of images for dual print/EPUB output in InDesign CC 2014.
    I am sort of experienced with InDesign but new to EPUB export. I have hundreds of pages and hundreds of images so I'd like to make my EPUB learning curve, in particular, less painful.
    Let me talk you through what I'm planning and you tell me if it's stupid.
    It's kind of a storybook-look I'm going for. Single column of text (6" by 9" page) with lots of small-to-medium images on the page (one or two images per page), and the text flowing around, sometimes right, sometimes left. Sometimes around the bounding box, sometimes following the edges of the images. So in each case I'm looking to tweak image size and placement and wrap settings so that the image is as close to the relevant text as possible and the layout isn't all wonky. Lovely print page the goal. Lots of fussy trade-offs and deciding what looks best. Inevitably, this will entail local overrides of paragraph styles. So what I want to do, I guess, is get the images as closely placed as possible, before I do any of that overriding. Then I divide my production line.
    1) I set aside the uniformly-styled doc for later EPUB export. (This is wise, right? Start for EPUB export with a doc with pristine styles?)
    2) With the EPUB-bound version set aside, I finish preparing the print side, making all my little tweaks. So many pages, so many images. So many little nudges. If I go back and nudge something at the beginning everything shifts a little. It's broken up into lots of separate stories, but still ... there is no way to make this non-tedious. But what is best practice? I'm basically just doing it by hand, eyeballing it and dropping an inline anchor to some close bit of text in case of some storm, i.e. if there's a major text change my image will still be almost where it belongs. Try to get the early bits right so that I don't have to go back and change them and then mess up stuff later. Object styles don't really help me with that. Do they? I haven't found a good use for them at this stage (Obviously if I had to draw a pink line around each image, or whatever, I'd use object styles for that.)
    Now let me shift back to EPUB. Clearly I need object styles to prepare for export. I'm planning to make a left float style and a right float style and a couple of others for other cases. And I'm basically going to go through the whole doc selecting each image and styling it in whatever way seems likeliest. At this point I will change the inline anchors to above line or custom, since I'm told EPUB doesn't like the inline ones.
    I guess maybe it comes down to this. I realize I have to use object styles for images for EPUB, but for print, manual placement - to make it look just right - and an inline anchor seems best? I sort of feel like if I'm going to bother to use object styles for EPUB I should also use them for print, but maybe that's just not necessary? It feels inefficient to make so many inline anchors and then trade them for a custom thing just for EPUB. But two different outputs means two different workflows. Sometimes you just have to do it twice.
    Does this make sense? What am I missing, before I waste dozens of hours doing it wrong?

    I've moved your question to the InDesign EPUB forum for best results.

  • Frame fitting options in object styles

    We are producing multiple pages using tagged templates and importing xml - to populate both text and images.
    Back in CS3 - our object styles using frame fitting worked perfectly. Since we have upgraded to CS5 and now CS6 - when xml is imported the frame fitting element of our object styles are no longer being honoured - when clicking on the object frame, it shows the style has been applied but with overrides - and it is adding random offsets to the frame fitting crop settings.
    We are producing large numbers of pages through xml automation, therefore it's very time consuming to open every page and clear overrides/reset frame fitting on every affected graphic.
    I've seen on other questions/forums that this may be a known bug - anyone have any up-to-date info on fixes or workarounds?
    Thanks for your help :-)

    Hello,
    We have a free startup script that clears the overrides after a place action.

  • Exporting based on Object Styles?

    Hi, I'm hoping that Jongware or someone can help with with a question I have.  I'm wondering if there is a way with scripting to
    gather and export the contents of text frames based on their object style?
    So for instance, let's say I have a document that has a series of linked text frames with a style of "body", mixed in with a series of text frames that are styled "captions". Would it be possible to export the text frames styled "caption", and retain the styles within them?
    (The goal is a cleanly styled export that we can give back to authors for revising in Microsoft Word).
    Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Well this wasn't exactly what I was after, but this is a great InDesign to Text plugin, which is stemming our backout pains...

  • CS3: Applying Object styles not always consistent

    Hello,
    I have a number of Object Styles, each of which have different Paragraph Styles called out. In turn, each of these Paragraph Styles calls out different fonts, font styles and sizes.
    Most of the time I can click on a text frame and all the parameters in the Object style are applied--just as it is supposed to be.
    But sometimes the font that the text is supposed to change to does not get applied. This seems to be inconsistent but there is probably an underlying order to it that I do not see.
    So why would an Object style not apply the Paragraph style that is called for in the Object style options?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    I now see the problem, though I do not know the solution.
    If I open up a new document and create a text frame, the font is that old ugly but familiar Times-Roman 12 point.
    But if I open up the template where I have many object, paragraph and character styles, one of each of these is already selected. I can either see this by opening the respective panels or above in the control panel. In fact, any text frame I create always has a top text inset.
    So my Preferences in general are OK and I'd rather not dump them. The problem is that styles are already selected upon opening this one ID file. How do I turn that off?
    In  answer to a question above, I do not simply redo the old Quark file, now in ID. I have a series of styles that are just much easier to apply in a separate ID file, rather than reinventing them in the Quark-to-ID file.
    Thanks for your questions and ideas. They helped me probe this deeper. Now I just need a solution to what I think is a simple problem (still eludes me tho!)

  • Map XML tag to an object style

    Hi everyone!
    I am not sure this is the correct place to post it, but i didn't find any "tagging" department of the forums.
    I do import some XML into ID document.
    Text nodes of my XML are imported properly, and i can map any tag of XML to one of the paragraph or table styles.
    But, when i import any images (or another ID documents) with <... href="..." />, how can i map that tag to an object style?
    ///////////// It would be very helpful for example when i'm going to set the stroke of 1pt to all of inline images of text frame.
    Please any feedback would be helpful.
    Alex.

    I will try to give an example, just to give a kick start ........... you need little bit of tweaking to meet your actual requirement:
    suppose you have an xml element "tag" having an attribute "@href" with object style name defined as  it's value.
    <tag href="object_style_name">
    "object_style_name" is a object style and should exist in your document. To map the tag with the corresponding object style value you can use XMLRules in JS:
    //NOTE: NOT TESTED, BUT SHOULD WORK
    #include "glue code.jsx"
    main();
    function main(){
    if (app.documents.length != 0){
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var myRuleSet = new Array (
    new findObjAttribute("//*[@href]")
    with(myDoc){
    var elements = xmlElements;
    __processRuleSet(elements.item(0), myRuleSet);
    else{
    alert("You have no document open!");
    exit();
    function findObjAttribute(XPATH){
    this.name = "findObjAttribute";
    this.xpath = XPATH;
    this.apply = function(myElement, myRuleProcessor)
    //Just to check whether the collect element is selected
    var elmName=myElement.markupTag.name;
    var styleName=myElement.xmlAttributes.itemByName("href").value;
    with(myElement){
    try {
    applyObjectStyle(myDoc.objectStyles.item(styleName), true);
         } catch(e){};
    return true;

  • Apply All Default Object Styles

    Captivate v5.5
    Having opened Captivate v5.5, not opened any projects and going straight to Edit/Object Styles - I have created the styles I want to work with for projects I create in v5.5...Let's call them my default styles for this question
    When I open a blank project in order to create a new project it seems (but not yet fully tested this) that my default styles have been applied. So far so good.
    However as I often create new projects based on a copy of a recently created project, the styles are not my "default" styles.
    1. How can I quickly apply all my default styles in one go to a project that has other styles already applied?
    2. Would it make sense if you could name and save your styles (and preferences) and so quickly identify and apply them ?
    Noel

    Anjaneai,
    Actually, Global Styles don't quite work that way.  If you set up a Global Style, it is ONLY available in new blank projects, not ALL projects.
    As a test, set up a new Global Style with some unique name, and then open up a project that already has a number of custom local styles created.  You'll find that the new Global Style you created does not appear in the Style list, or in the Object Style Manager.  However, if you open a new Blank project that has no custom styles, THEN the global style will show up on the Style list.
    So Noel's point is quite valid. Global styles SHOULD be available in all projects.  But that's not the way they actually work in practice.

  • Search Object Style in CS2

    Hi all,
    Im doing javascript for InDesign CS2. I need to find unused Object style through script.
    Please Help....
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi creativejoan0425
    I am not sure if I get your question rigth because my answer ist very short
    All you need is:
    var myDocAnz = app.documents.length;
    for (k= 0; k < myDocAnz; k++) {
         var myStories = app.documents[k].stories.everyItem().getElements();
    // your code
         for (i = myStories.length - 1; i >= 0; i--){
             var myTextFrames = myStories[i].textContainers;
             for (j = myTextFrames.length - 1; j >= 0; j--)    {
                 if (myTextFrames[j].contents == ""){
                     myTextFrames[j].remove();
                 } // if
             }  // for
         } // for
    } // for
    But with this script you remove every empty textframe

  • Rotate object to match path or another object

    How do I rotate an object to either make one of its sides match another object, or become totally horizontal/vertical.
    Let's say I want to rotate rectangle A in the picture so that its red line has the same angle as the horizontal path B, or the same angle as the blue line in rectangle C. Is there an easy way to do this?

    (This is one of those ridiculously elementary things that mystified me too, for longer than I would've liked, but I finally figured it out.)
    Like Carlos depicts in his post above, the key is having Smart Guides on, and then setting the rotation point by single-clicking somewhere once you have the Rotate Tool seletected.
    Snap the two shapes in question together on the same point. Also, set the rotation point at that same point.
    NOW, referring to the shape who's rotation to you need to modify: click and drag (making sure to always snap) on one of the two segments, which is connected by the point where you snapped the rotation point to and rotate it until your cursor contacts the shape who's rotation is already correct. Instead of grabbing a segment, you can also grab another point of the same shape.
    I wish Wade would've included that in his video - it's hard to explain.
    Once you set the rotation point, you can click anywhere and cause the selected object to "pivot" that your designated rotation point. Using a point on the rotation-needing shape it especially effective. Illie's snaps aren't the best - using points is the surest way to snap correctly.

  • How to export/Import default prefs and object styles with no project open?

    I would like to export my preferences and object styles with no projects open and them import them on my team's machines so that no matter what project we create, we all start from the SAME set of defaults.  When I open captivate and check both with no projects open, there is no ability to import/export.  I know I could open a project and export, but then importing is an issue.
    I'm using CP8 on a Windows 8.1 64 bit machine.
    Help?
    Thx.
    Lori

    After a fresh install I start by editing the Preferences globally, that means by using Edit, Preferences before opening any project (like switching to Expert UI, default language, replacing feedback captions by shapes). There is indeed no way to import preferences from a specific file. I will do the same for some object styles (like creating a blank Highlight box for audio objects). You can only export/import from and to a project,  same like for all Library assets.
    However the Object styles: they are part of the default theme, along with their theme colors, master slides and skin. You cannot edit everything without having a project open. I would recommend to create a custom theme in a project, in which you have all the wanted object styles. Changing the theme colors (you can have a custom theme color palette) will change partially colors of the objects. Once you set that theme as default theme, you'll have all the object styles in the projects that use the default theme.
    To transfer Preferences, custom themes to another machine, maybe this article could help you out. It was written for a different purpose, but you'll find the location of a lot of files that you could transfer in this post:
