Another one with flashing amber light on airport express...

New out the box airport express flashing amber...for first 30 seconds after plugin it holds amber steady then starts flashing...
Internet connection fine...using wireless for this iPad... have sky router/modem....sky hd + box connected to router via Ethernet...
Express situated approx 1m from router nothing blocking path...even placed side by side doesn't work...
Airport utility app says device not found...
Did try connecting express to router via Ethernet cable used with sky box but didn't work either...
Any ideas...would a reset be worth a try?
My sky tv is down because of problem with dish on roof...but because my wifi is working I don't see this being connected?  Adsl for broadband and satellite for tv...

(running commentary)
Well that wasn't quite right...so will post for anyone who might find of value in future...
The express can be connected to speakers on the same wifi network that the ISP router provides, enabling simultaneous wifi net browsing on my iPad and wifi music through speakers via AirPlay etc....turns out that the method involved includes extending the existing wifi network, so if you want to buy an airport express v2 for primarily network extension, you do not need to connect it to to the ISP router via Ethernet to achieve this...I have done this at the same time as achieving my main aim of using with speakers...so that's def a bonus...and the same goes for each new express and speaker combo you set up around your house/mansion etc...

  • TS1589 Had to replace our Airport Extreme when it stopped working (still under warranty).  Now I can't get anything but flashing amber light. Airport utility says "error occurred" when I try to get it set up.

Had to replace our Airport Extreme (802.11n) and now can't get anything but flashing amber light.  Have gone the route of turning off modem (overnight), restarting everything this morning and at least when I turned on the laptop (no desktop) the Airport Utility opened automatically.  I put in the info for the Airport Extreme that we had previously (password, etc) but it couldn't connect (said error occurred).  I would assume this is because of the flashing amber light?

I am having a similar issue.  However I've had my airport express for over 3 years.  Yesterday we had to reset the router as it wasn't broadcasting.
Today having same issue so we reset the router again.  And now still blinking amber.  When I go to the Airport Utility I can't even go to the Manual Setup as I'm getting the Error 4.  Internet works fine as the router and modem are hooked up to my computer via Ethernet cable.
I did a factory reset and the AE is broadcasting again.  but I can't get in to protect the network.  And it's still blinking amber.
    Any thoughts would be great.

  • More flashing amber on my Airport express-help?

I too have the flashing amber on my new Airport Express wireless station.
Here's my deal: I already have a Dlink router hooked up to my cable modem.
The ethernet line is connected from router to one desktop G3 and working. I'm also pulling wirless fom the router to all other laptops in my home no problem. I got the APE wirless to hook up to my stereo with a desire to play music from any one of our systems. Now I can only hook up seperately to the APE wirless on it's own network and transfer itune to my stereo, but can't access internet on that same network. Seem I have to choose between one or the other for each application. Does this make sense. I'm having trouble trying to join the house network so we can both play music to the stereo and
surf web and mail applications using both stations applied. I've been very confused with all the explinations to solve this. Does anyone have a simple and understandable solution?...please advise!!

    Hi,
You posted the below response to someone with several computers in their network. I am having similar trouble, but have only one computer, one Airport Express and yet there is a conflict between my ethernet connection to the Intenet and my AE connection: I can use only one or the other, but not both simultaneously. If I attempt your recommended config via ethernet, I get nothing - the config drops the AE base station and I have to hard reset to locate it again. Have you got any ideas how to resolve this conflict??
You just need to set up the AirPort Express Base
Station (AX) as a "wireless client."
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base
Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility,
connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet
cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try
    these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the
    default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network
    (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select the existing D-Link
    wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes
    (checked)

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

  • AirPort Extreme  Would like to eliminate comcast netgear router. Flashing amber light.

Hi. I have Comcast service for TV and Internet. The provided Comcast modem is an Aries and the router is a Netgear.  Both are located on my garage at a panel box where all cables come in and get distributed around the house with an 8 port switch (large house- all wired with rg6 and coaxial).  The layout is comcast main cable-aries modem-netgear router- netgear switch- wall jacks through out house.  As expected the wired signal from the provided netgear router only worked near the garage.  So I purchase an AirPort Extreme and hooked it up to the wired signal at the middle of house Internet jack. Questions:
1). My AirPort Extreme has a flashing amber light.  Can't get a green signal. But it works
2). Can I get rid of the Comcast netgear modem?  Compatibility with AirPort Extreme ?? I would save money from rental!!!
3).  If so would the signal from the new AirPort Extreme cover the house from the garage?
4). Is there a better way of configuring the network? Or another piece of equipment that I need to buy?
    Thanks

Confirm the Ethernet jack you are using is operative by connecting a computer to it and temporarily disabling the computer's wireless.
If you use AirPort Utility on a computer or iOS device, it will tell you the reason the Extreme's LED is flashing. I suspect it has not been configured as a bridge - change its "Connection Sharing" to "Off (Bridge Mode)". Make its wireless network name and security settings identical to your existing wireless network.
You will still require Comcast's Arris modem.
The signal from the new Extreme, plus that of your existing Netgear router, should be sufficient to provide wireless service for most modest sized houses. It's impossible to be certain due to the nature of wireless communication.
A garage is not the ideal location for either a wireless access point or a switch. Since both of them need to connect more or less radially to the devices that require it, a better location is in the center of a house. Panel boxes are almost always in a corner. That's convenient for public utilities, not so much for wireless. It's also the easy way if you're a Comcast technician. If your house is already wired for Cat 6 as well as cable, it would not involve much additional effort to relocate your Comcast modem and existing router so that your wireless network will serve your house more effictively. Two wireless access points as you propose will also mitigate this.

  • I am upgrading wi-fi router from Airport Express to Airport Extreme. I followed set up instructions yet I am still getting the flashing amber light and cannot setup (using manual setup or the continue button).  What should I do??

    Hello,
I am upgrading my wireless router from an Airport Express to an Airport Extreme.  After disconnecting the Express and plugging the Extreme via ethernet cable to the modem, I am receiving a flashing amber light after connecting the power source.  I also reset the modem while the Extreme was still powered and plugged into the modem, but no luck.  I also tried resetting the modem and the Extreme and still no resolution.  Please advise.  Thank you!

This error usually occurs when the Windows Firewall and/or anti-virus software blocks the connection attempt from the PC to the AirPort Extreme.
Microsoft Security Essentials can do the same thing.
Things would be much easier if you had a Mac or iPhone or iPad to set up the AirPort Extreme. Otherwise try turning off the Windows Firewall and Anti-Virus programs, etc on the PC.
Restart the PC, then see if the PC can contact the AiPort Extreme. It will likely help to connect an Ethernet cable from the PC to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. You can disconnect the Ethernet cable once the AirPort Extreme has been configured.
Re-enable the Windows Firewall, Anti-Virus, etc and restart the PC.

  • Airport express not working (flashing amber light)

I just bought an airport express and have spent days trying to set it up with my Cable modem. I use Time Warners roadrunner as my service provider and know that the cable modem is not the problem because the internet works fine when I hook my mac laptop directly up to the modem via ethernet cable. Originally when I first plugged in the airport express base station I only received the flashing amber light. I have tried unplugging the modem and plugging it back in multiple times, but I continuously get the flashing amber light on the airport base station. My modem however recognizes the airport and is flashing the light that signals that it is linked to a computer.
My computer recognizes the airport, I get a strong signal and the airport utility says that everything is ok but the light on the base station flashes amber and the Internet wont work. Originally I had it set to Connect Using: Ethernet and Configure TCP/IP: DHCP and the light flashed amber so I started messing around with the settings. I changed it to Configure TCP/IP: PPPoE but was not sure what my login and password would be so I used my account information for roadrunner and to my surprise the light stopped flashing amber and turned green. I thought my problem was miraculously solved but the Internet still wouldn’t work, it kept trying to connect to the PPOE server with no luck. I had never expected the wireless to work under the PPOE setting so I was very surprised that the light turned green rather than amber. This is very confusing to me so I put the configure setting back to Ethernet rather than PPPoE and the light started flashing amber again. I have put the airport back to its default settings many times and tried starting over, but I still get the amber light.
I have run out of things to try and do not know a whole lot about wireless Internet so any help would be useful. I know of other people that have set up their airport express with very little hassle and knowledge of computers, so I thought this was going to be an easy process, apparently I was very wrong.

Roadrunner's cable internet service uses DHCP and not PPPoE - so the first thing you need to do is change that configuration back to DHCP on your Airport Express.
Then unplug both the cable modem and Airport Express from power for a while - the longer the better. Try five minutes, and if that doesn't work then try all day or overnight. After you get tired waiting, plug the modem back into power and wait a minute. Then plug the Airport Express into power - and hopefully by now Roadrunner's connection will have been reset and the Airport Express will be able to establish a connection, get an IP address, and show you the solid green status light.

  • Brand new AirPort Extreme has only flashing amber light

    Hi all,
I just brought home an airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n to get online with my snazzy new MacBook Pro. So, I hooked the router up to my cable modem as per instructions, and all I get is a flashing amber light. I've tried rebooting the modem, and still zip. There's nothing wrong with my internet connection ~ when I connect either the desktop or the laptop via Ethernet directly to the modem, I get on line immediately. But I just can't get the base station to connect with the modem. I've waded through the forum and haven't found an answer, and since Apple no longer provides a phone number in their manuals, I have no way to get an actual human to walk me through this. I don't know whether I'm missing some crucial step, or if I have a defective base station and am just spinning my wheels trying to get it to work. Any assistance would be MUCH appreciated!
    Thanks, Kate

OK, I'm putting this back out to the group.
I've tried resetting the AEBS back to factory settings, I've unplugged and rebooted the modem & AEBS numerous times. I tried to install the 7.5 firmware, but my MacBook can't see the AEBS to perform the installation, and still, no internet connection and the persistent flashing amber light.
Comcast tells me they don't support routers, so they can't check to see if the AEBS is visible on their end ~ but I'd bet it isn't.
I'll try Apple's support line tomorrow, but in the meantime ~ has anyone else experienced this level of problem, or does it sound like I have a faulty unit?
    Thanks!

  • HT1178 i can't connect the time capsule with my mac using the aiport utility. i want to use the time capsule to make backup for my mac book pro. the time capsule is giving a flashed amber light. please advice me

the time capsule is giving flashed amber light and i cant connect it to my mac book pro. i want to use it with the time machine to make backup for my mac. please advice me.

To do the setup, plug it in via ethernet.. do not try to setup over wireless.. Once it is setup you can plug the TC into the network and use wireless.
Most likely you will use the TC in bridge to an existing modem router.. but we cannot help as you have no details of the network setup.
I do recommend in the setup of the TC you use SMB type names.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. as later Mac OS do have issues with long names, spaces and that apple shocker, the apostrophe.

  • APX Intermittently Operational (Flashing Amber Light)

For several months I have enjoyed wireless conectivity through my AirPort Express connected to my DSL router. When attempting to connect the other day I was unable to access the network eventhough I had full signal strength. Upon examining the AirPort Express I noticed the indicator light flashing amber. I tried everything in my limited bag of tricks to get it up an running again, but it will only work intermittently for short bursts before returning to the flashing amber light.
    Here's what I have tried...
    Soft Reset
I reset the base station through the AirPort Admin Utility.
    Hard Reset
I reset the base station by pressing the button until the indicator light flashed and used the AirPort Setup Assistant to reconfigure the station.
Turned It Off - DHCP Lease Renewal
I turned off the DSL router, the AirPort Express, and the computer overnight.
    Changed Firmware
I loaded an earlier version of the Airport Express firmware after reading on the forum that it solved some of the problems with the AirPort Extreme.
I am able to access the internet via the ethernet port, so I dont suspect any problems with my DSL router setup. I have a strong signal and dont suspect any interference.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Why AE flashing amber light, yet connects to 2 of 3 home computers?

    I don't get this.
Suddenly my Macbook pro can't connect to either of my two networks off the Airport Extreme.
I have a Cable dsl modem, etherneted to my mac mini, which gets internet no problem.
iBook is in another bedroom and gets full interenet - even though it's wireless and the AE has a flashing amber light.
The Macbook pro sees the network but I still can't connect even though I've tried everything:
trying to airport utility (which tries to the read the airport configuration but delivers an error message); I repair permissions; zapped the pram.
And yet my Airport Extreme keeps flashing amber. And - the wireless ibook gets internet no problem.
    Any ideas on what's wrong?

Power cycle the entire network, just turn everything...all devices off, order is not important
Start the modem first and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Keep powering up devices the same way until everything is back up
    Check for proper operation
If the AirPort Extreme is still blinking amber,
Try temporarily connecting an ethernet cable from the Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. See if AirPort Utility can read the configuration that way.

  • Time Capsule keeps on flashing amber light.

I've been using my TC for a year, in wifi, without problems.
I've changed apartment now, went and turned my modem on, Mac on, everything was connected working properly and ready to go (as usual).
Connected my TC to the power cable, and it started up with solid amber light as usual.
Then instead of connecting with my wifi network (as it did in my old house with old wifi) and turning solid green, it started flashing amber and keeps on doing it.
It just won't "go online", and it says in the menu bar "Time Machine Not Configured", and I won't find the disk if I open the menu for TC preferences.
If I open the Airport Utility, no disk there either and if I tell it to search for disks it does but it won't find anything.
The light just keeps on flashing amber and the disk isn't there, anywhere to be found, or not configured, basically.
But computer and wifi network do work properly, so it's not that either of them is having any problem.
It's the TC itself, like it can't manage to connect to THIS new wifi network, which is also from the same provider as in my old apartment same modem too.
There's no difference at all, I don't know I thought TC would automatically connect to this new wifi and backup on it like it did with the old one?
Maybe not, I hope someone can give me a heads up, the manual isn't helping much.
I have obv. disconnected, connected again, restarted...everything.
Starts up properly but then doesn't go solid green, it never goes online.
I don't know if I should hit the reset button on the back of the TC, like reset it to factory settings? D:
Or maybe just try and re-configure it, but if so, how and where?
It won't let me do that in time machine preferences, or in airport utility.
It just won't find any disk, and I need to backup asap.
I hope I haven't lost all of my previous backups, too.
Only thing left, which might help, but didn't change things much: at the beginning I went to time machine pref. through the menu bar and the disk was there with my name and all, but it said that there was a problem or something, the rest is as stated above.
So I thought I could forget/delete that disk, and maybe re-add it?
Which is not a reset I just deleted it from the list of disks in the pref. or airport utility.
Now as said there's no disk in the list anymore, I wouldn't know what to do.
I deleted it 'cause even if it was there I was still stuck, it wouldn't go online/green, it wouldn't connect, it wouldn't backup, not even disconnecting it and so on.
    What should I do?
Hope someone can help, thank you.
If it can help, this is what I see now, not sure what to do. "Not configured" in menu bar, no disk in the TM menu list, nothing found in the airport utility.

You need to find out where the issue is.. it is most likely not the TC.. Mountain Lion has known networking issues.. Since you crossed out the IP your modem is getting, I cannot see if it is a private or public address.
You need to do all these things.. in order.
    1. Install 5.6 utility in Mountain Lion. v6 is useless.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool
    2. Read this so you know how to factory reset.. it is different to what you are doing. You hold the reset before you power on..
    Please read the info.
There are three different kinds of reset. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
A reboot is not a reset.. you simply power down and power up again.
    3. Reset TM as per A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    4. I suggest this.. start with the TC completely disconnected from network..
Turn off wireless in the computer. Plug the TC LAN port to the computer ethernet port.
Do a factory reset on the TC. Open Airport utility 5.6, and setup the TC..
Give the TC a name of TC.
Give the hard disk a different name.. TCdata
You can ignore the wireless for now.. but if you want call 2.4ghz TC24ghz and use a different name for 5ghz ie TC5ghz.
    5. Changing names is important.. you are ignoring it. but it is important to make things look anew.
    6. If TM after a reset cannot find the disk.. you have a problem in Mountain Lion install on the computer.. clean install ML.
