Another panic shutdown
My iMac shuts down by itself ocassionally for no apparent reason. It happened overnight last night. Here's the Problem Details report that appeared on restart.
Any clues here as to the cause and/or what to do?
Thanks!!

Thanks!

Mid 2010 macbook pro panic shutdown
My mid 2010 Macbook pro is experiencing an increasing number of black screen shut downs.. 3 or 4 a day currently.
Often this occurs when the keyboard or mouse is touched after it has been idle for a short period, and sometimes mid use.
Ive tried running without any peripherals to no effect and carried out basic disc doctor / onyx procedures to no lasting effect.
Any interpretation of this would be a great help.
Here is a crash report ..
thxYou have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -

Any help appreciated before I open her up!
I had multiple crashes attempting to post this. Desktop at the point of not useable. GPU temps are between 35 C and 60 C.
Also I can not get computer to crash in safe mode.Is it possible to add a different card
Not to my knowledge. Whatever card you use would need to have Mac-specific firmware, so don't bother trying a PC card. -
23" HD Cinema sends my 10.4.8 (G5 SP1.8) into a kernel panic shutdown
Ever since the latest OS 10.4.8 update my machine randomly shutdown in 2 to 12 hours. After trying every thing imaginable I finally found that bypassing the displays USB hub it works like before the update! It has been up now for 4 days and my fingers are still crossed.
I original thought and still think it might have something to do with this http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3552646#3552646
1.8 G5 Power Mac Mac OS X (10.4.8)I can not get my 23" display to turn on with 10.4.8. mac book goes to external mode but no luck w/external. HAve tried all the steps including re-installing from orig disk. It all worked fine with 10.4.3
I'd be grateful for any suggestions to this seemingly related issue. -
Another Panic Report Translation Needed Please
Even after updating to 10.4.8 and installing a new hard drive, I'm still having kernel panics. Previously I got a report that indicated something plugged into the computer was causing the kernel panics. So I unplugged everything other than the keyboard/mouse USB combo and the Epson C86 USB printer.
Last night it crashed again. Can anyone here please translate this panic log?
Thanks

Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.0: Fri Sep 8 17:18I can't translate, sorry. If there's a USB problem, you'll usually see USB in the log somewhere.
Do you know exactly how the tech tested everything? The testing may not necessarily show bad memory if the tech used the Apple Hardware test CD. He may have used
http://www.memtestosx.org/
to run a thorough test. If so, it's pretty likely memory is not the problem, but I'd still consider swapping out chips if you haven't yet, and I'd also disconnect the printer just to be certain.
Putting in a new HD and reinstalling the OS, as I said before, points to some hardware problem. If it were me, and I paid someone to test it, I might get a little obnoxious with them or at least ask for a supervisor, although, if they didn't test it with the printer attached, well you get the idea.
good luck and post back if you figure anything out. -
Another Random Shutdown Thread!
Hey all
So, ive got the random shutdown prob. Ive downloaded the firmware update and when I go to install it im told its not needed, I tried the battery update..and still the prob persists. Is it just that my battery is a dud?
Thanks !
KasraYeah, I was suprised about that too. I'm sitting outside the Apple Store right now with my replacement. I demonstrated the crash once to the guy by running yes, and then it crashed again on him while he was trying to look at the logs.
This one's a week 32. I'm currently running yes in two Terminal windows and all seems well. Let's hope it stays this way!
edit: I think the problem with my old MacBook was with the temperature sensors or with the fans, because I didn't hear the fans kick in once while I was using it and the fans just kicked in on this one. Strange thing is, it crashed even when it was cool to the touch. Just thought that was worth mentioning... -
After installing an additional 8GB of memory (total of 16 GB now), experiencing periodic system shutdowns. The memory test out ok, however. Any recommendations?
Exactly which model iMac do you have...?
see > How to identify iMac models
Exactly what spec and brand of memory did you add...?
see > iMac: How to remove or install memory
If the RAM that you added is the correct spec and from reputable vendor, then you might have one that is not firmly seated in the slot.
To insure that all the modules are firmly seated in there slots, lay the iMac face down on a soft towel and push real hard on each module with both thumbs.

Unexpected random Kernel Panic Shutdown
Hello,
I have regular random kernel panics on my MacBookPro 15-inch, Early 2011, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid 750GB @ 7200T.
I sent my log to Apple Care Support but I never had any response. Because I cannot decrypt it I do not know if it is a software or hardware related issues and then what should I do prevent it.
I appreciate your feedback and support.
Bruno

1. I do not have Soundflower software installed. I guess the driver came with ML?
2. I should defintevely uninstall Rogue Amoeba softwares (Airfoil, Fission, Audio Hijack Pro)? Because I bought these programs and I am using them on a regular basis.
Or should I uninstall and reinstall them?
Thanks

Random, Sudden Shutdowns - A redux and other things to rule out first
Do a google search for "macbook random shutdown" and you'll find many people with similar problems reporting on various forums. At present, this issue has not been picked up by the mainstream PC news media. However, one should also note that only a fraction of those with problems are suffering this particular fault. A large number of other reasons must be ruled out before a MacBook owner should become convinced their machine is one which suffers this problem. Bad RAM, poorly seated RAM, improperly installed hard drive, corrupted OS, corrupted plists, bad batteries, bad chargers, corrupted PMU, and corrupted NVRAM all need to be ruled out first!
My own MacBook suffered the random sudden shutdown malady and eventually required complete replacement after a logic board replacement did not solve the issue. Some of the MacBooks appear to have a hardware problem which surfaces after a period of use. Many reported their problems starting after a month of ownership. Coincidentally, that also coincided with the release of 10.4.7, but most likely that is not at the root of the sudden, random, shutdown problem.
(However, 10.4.7 is strongly implicated in a separate MacBook problem - colored vertical lines during boot on some machines. That is probably a separate issue.)
Description of the Random, Sudden Shutdown Problem
MacBook suddenly shuts off to a completely powered down state seemingly at random. There are no kernel panic, mouse freezing, or other premonitory symptoms. The machine simply powers down suddenly. The screen goes black. The hard drive spins down and no sleep light illuminates. The machine simply turns itself off.
The shutdowns may occur on either battery or with AC adapter attached. Some owners report their MacBook is less prone to sudden shut down while on battery vs AC adapter. My own afflicted MacBook would suddenly shutdown on a fully charged battery or on either of two AC adapters.
The shutdowns occur with either 10.4.6 or 10.4.7 OS loaded. I went through several cycles of clean installs of the base 10.4.6 and the Intel Combo update to 10.4.7 before it became clear that it mattered not which OS was running. Another indicator that this is not an OS issue is that sudden shutdowns can occur in target mode and also when running just the Apple Hardware Test - which relies on minimal software to operate.
The shutdowns tend to grow more frequent once they begin. They may worsen to the point that a machine will not complete boot up before shutting down. It may take several power up presses to start the machine. Oddly enough, a machine that had difficulty starting up, may be easy to start up several minutes later. It may run for hours or minutes before another sudden shutdown. The frequency is low and random enough that is very difficult to demonstrate this fault to a service technician.
Some users are able to induce a sudden shutdown by running their CPU's at high load and thus heating up the machine. This is easily done by running the yes command in two Terminal windows. Some users report their MacBook is more prone to sudden shutdowns when their CPU is relatively cool. The bipolar reporting is confusing. There may be more than one type of sudden shutdown being reported. One due to CPU overheating and another due to another hardware problem which has yet to be elucidated.
Resetting of the PMU and PRAM MAY temporarily reduce the frequency of the sudden shutdowns, but the effect is temporary. Indeed, the effect may not even be real given the randomness of the shutdowns. None-the-less, one must perform PMU and PRAM resets to ensure that some corruption of those devices is not creating a reason for shutdowns. On my own MacBook, resetting PMU and PRAM (four chimes) did not prevent the random sudden shutdowns.
The sudden shutdowns occur with well seated stock RAM, replacement RAM, and reseated/replaced hard drives. Swapping out and testing both RAM and hard drive helps to eliminate those as the source of the problem. On my own machine, I exchanged the RAM and the hard drive to eliminate them as the cause. This made it considerably easier for the Apple genius to decide it was an internal problem.
In my case, a logic board replacement did indeed solve the fault, but several days later, sudden shutdowns began again. Presumably either the replacement board has the same weakness as the original or some other component of the machine was the actual reason for the sudden shutdowns. The former is quite likely because the machine was made stable for several days with a new logic board. At that point, I requested to be swapped to a new machine and the Apple Store manager wisely decided to help out his customer. For that I am most grateful. However, it is unlikely that the majority of people will have their machines swapped out, but instead repaired.
At this time, no official statement regarding cause for or acknowledgment of the MacBook's sudden random shutdown problem has been made. Because the underlying cause has not been revealed, it is impossible to know that a logic board replacement will permanently solve the problem or merely result in the same fault recurring later on the replacement board. Of course, we do not know if it actually is a logic board flaw.
My advice to MacBook owners whose machines develop the sudden random shutdown symptoms are to...
1. Get your data backed up immediately. The machine will likely suffer more and more frequent shutdown events.
2. Revert to stock RAM and hard drive if you have installed after-market replacements. You must do this and see if the shutdowns continue to occur. Otherwise, the first thing blamed will be your RAM and hard drive.
3a. Perform a PMU reset, by shutting down the MacBook. Removing the battery. Disconnect the AC Adapter. Then, press the power button for five seconds. The reinstall the battery and mains adapter. Restart the machine.
3b. Reset PRAM by holding option-command-P-R keys down during startup until you hear the chime at least three or four times.
Resetting the PMU and PRAM are standard procedures you'll otherwise be asked to perform to diagnose your machine.
4. Do a CLEAN install of the OSX if you wish to totally eliminate a bad OS install as the problem. This will destroy all your data. Alternatively, an archive and install will be helpful without totally destroying your data, but that will not let you exonerate your system files and settings. An alternative is to run Apple's hardware test utility which is found on your OS installation disc. However, an extended hardware test is needed because the shutdown flaw may take hours to surface.
Note: If your MacBook has become so "narcoleptic" that it cannot even complete a boot up sequence, try holding the power button down until you hear a loud beep. That may allow an otherwise balky machine to start.
Once you have done the above, and are still seeing random sudden shutdowns, you have largely done the preliminary footwork that you'll need to prove whether your MacBook has this particular problem and not something more common. Then, call AppleCare or visit your Apple Genius to have the machine repaired or replaced. Hopefully, the root cause of this problem will be discovered, disclosed, repaired and prevented. For now, it appears only a fraction of the MacBooks are suffering this fault, but the machine population is still young. Overall, the MacBook is perhaps the finest laptop I've bought from Apple. It will be nice to trust the machine to not lose my work.
BTW - resetting PMU may induce a separate 10.4.7 related bug which results in your MacBook exhibiting a white screen with progressively more numerous vertical color lines during startup. This appears to be fixable by resetting PRAM and then temporarily changing display resolution to something other than the current setting and then back.thanks for the comprehensive info. i experienced this for the first time today. i bought my macbook the day they were released. the shutdown happenned for me after leaving my computer on overnight with no programs running. about two minutes into web browsing it shutdown. it then shutdown in the middle of restarts. i disattached power cord, external hard drive, dvd burner & ethernet & it powered up and has been working for about 20 minutes since.
this computer has really been a lemon. first my superdrive scratches the **** (just previewed this, i can't believe they sensor the h_ word?) out of discs, then the trackpad button becomes very hard to push. i've been working around those issues using an external dvd burner and mouse, but not sure how to work around sudden shutdowns. i haven't been able to send it in for repairs yet since i bought it cause i needed it's dvd authoring capabilities for a class i was taking, plus i wanted to make sure nothing else went wrong (self fulfilling prophecy?). i was planning on taking it on vacation with me, but guess i better pack my old ibook too (which other than a cd burner which sucked from the start, has been very reliable). i'll send in my macbook when i get back.
anyway, thanks for the info & advice! i'll back up my crucial data now.

Constant Kernel Panic in OS X! HELP!
Hey All!
I got major problems with my Mac Pro.
I continue to get Kernel Panic duing Software Update, Moving big amounts of files around, using different applications (everything from apple apps, games and Photoshop/Modo).
I just reinstalled my comp and resettet my harddisk (wrote all zeroes to it) and got Grey Screen Of Death (please restart your computer) again. I booted my Mac Pro up as external harddisk and used my iBook disk utility to write zeroes to my Mac Pro Harddisk and it worked. Now after installing OS X, it supricingly crashed again with kernel panic.
I did a hardware test using the DVD's i got with my Mac Pro. It said everything was in perfect order :/
heres my panic.log

I dont know what to do to get rid of this constant kernel panic shutdowns
Please write if you need more information. At the moment i dont know what to do.First you cannot format the Mac Pro using Disk Utility on your iBook. You need to use the Disk Utility on the OS X Installer Disc that came with the Mac Pro. Insert the OS X Installer Disc (Mac Pro) then restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the gray startup screen with the dark gray Apple logo appears. Release the key when the spinning gear appears.
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Option button and select the GUID partition scheme option then click on OK. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed to install OS X.
If the computer kernel panics when starting from the DVD then there is likely a hardware problem. You can run the hardware test by again restarting with the OS X Installer Disc and after the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the hardware test screen appears. I suggest you run the long tests to see if any hardware faults are detected.
Hardware problems can only be resolved by taking the computer to your local Apple service center.

MacBook Pro Mid-2010 15" Frequent Kernel Panics
Hello all,
I have been experiencing frequent kernel panic shutdowns (2-3 a day) since upgrading to Yosemite. To compound matters, after each panic is an additional restart as my computer is already in the process of restarting, so I never get the crash log or option to send it, and I can't decipher the logs in Console to find them--if they exist.
This is also happening to my daughter's identical model, and was happening after updating to 10.9.5 a while ago. I took my laptop to the Genius bar and they tried to tell me there was an issue with my video card (GPU) and that it would need replacing. I was doubtful about that diagnosis and opted not to repair (no time to give up my computer for the time needed anyway), and with my daughter's problem I seem to be vindicated. Prior to installing Yosemite I reinstalled 10.9.5 and was crash-free for a week before upgrading to Yosemite. Now the problem is getting worse, and reinstalling did not fix it.
I am attaching my daughter's recent crash log with the same GPU incident that the Genius showed me.
Any ideas or inspiration would be welcome.
Thanks,
Lou

Thunderbolt Bus:Thanks for your reply. But please try to understand why we (affected people) are not happy for this problem.
Actually Apple store's staff also told me that is known "H/W" fault when i brought my macbook to run VST last week.
Apple claimed this is H/W fault and suggested us to change logic board. The interesting thing is, this problem was existed from long time ago. Please check this URL > MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video - Apple Support
After read the page above, you should understand that version 10.8 or before also got this "H/W" problem but Apple tried to fix this for 10.8 or before.
From 10.9, no more support for this problem. Until 10.10 released, you may search "GPUPanic 2010 mid macbook" from google and you will see how many people was affected by this problem.
I also want to classify what is the definition of H/W fault. If apple can isolate the bug of the logic which was burnt on logic board (version 10.8 or before), then this is software fix for H/W fault.
If Apple OS development team can just check our macbook version from OS and escape the "H/W" logic bug, all 2010 mid macbook will not be affected again.
For real H/W fault, I don't think so many people will see same error at same period (after upgraded to 10.10) like this > ... AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127
The important point is, Apple provided OS update for us before 10.8, then we didnt know the actual graphic card's problem.
We trusted Apple and bought macbook. But Apple told us that our graphic card got "H/W" fault and no more support from 10.9.
I like macbook and saved money to buy this in 2010. Using it carefully up to now. Finally Apple told me that my macbook's graphic card got problem and asked me to change(buy) logic board for fixing this problem.
In Sep 2014, I'd just bought new macbook for my girl friend which is new model 2014 15" macbook pro. I told her macbook is very stable and have no problem. What a big joke to me......and to all affected people. -
NEW Random But Regular MacBook Pro Mountain Lion 10.8.5 Panic Reboots
Sadly I am losing any love or trust in MacOS stability. I had random kernel panic shutdowns bad enough that I had to go to Apple and get a motherboard replacement on the mid-2010 MacBook Pro. The suspect was the nvidia defect which many have been hit by on that laptop.
Got the machine back and it ran fine a few days but has had several reboots in the last few days. No new app has been installed (except the OS 10.8.5 upgrade) and this newish set of errors appears in Console before the crashes... Older log file is at the bottom of the message to show the difference from the NVRM crashes... Why can't the OS handle even flawed software more elegantly and robustly? Any ideas on what these new errors, OCSPD errors opening a database, and something "just leaking". An earlier crash also showed iCloudHelper in there somewhere.
Appreciate any help. Thank you.

OLDER CRASHES (prior to motherboard replacement and before OS 10.8.5:
For the last 2 weeks or so, my MacBook Pro i5 15" 2010 has started experiencing random but frequent panic reboots even when no particular app was running or if running no work was being done. The worst case was when it crashed/rebooted with iPhoto open and corrupting the Library, that took hours to rebuild.
Initially the panic happened when I set the lower left corner of the primary screen to act as a screensaver trigger and it seems a brief mouse passover that spot caused a panic. Since then I disabled that option and still have had these panics, at random.
The crash report sent to Apple shows NVRM

Frequent Kernel Panics on Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I recently bought a used MacbookPro5,1 with a 2,4 Ghz Core2Duo Processor. It was upgraded to 4 GB of RAM and a 750GB HDD by the previous owner. When I received it yesterday, it was running 10.6.3, I think. It worked flawlessly for the first couple of hours. Then I downloaded the update to 10.6.8. No Problems. After that, it wanted to download and install even more updates for iTunes, Java, and the like. During this update process the Macbook had its first Kernel Panic. It was followed by 3 or 4 more during the next couple hours, with no particular pattern. (Browsing the web, gaming, etc.)
I did run a memtest, and it crashed the first time I was running it. However, I was doing other tasks at the same time. The second time, I ran 2 memtests, with absolutely no problems.
The last Kernel Panic occurred while I tried to uninstall the Avast antivirus I had installed, since I suspected it as a cause for the panics. After unistall, I had no more panics.
Today, I used the Macbook for a couple of hours without any problems. I spent a lot of the time playing a 3D game from the app store. No problems. Then, another kernel panic while watching a youtube video, and another a couple hours later while just browsing facebook. I did another memtest, still nothing.
I then uninstalled firefox, thinking it might be the problem, since it was involved in most of the panics.
I was able to use the laptop for a couple of hours, and now it had another panic while watching a video on safari...

I hope any of you guys can help me solve this problem. I really don't know what to do. I really hope its not hardware related. If you need any more information please tell me.I assume you have working installer discs? If so here's a suggestion:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc. Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key. Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
