Another person asking about moving files in lightroom

I have spent several hours today trying to sort out, what I thought was going to be an easy question.
Moving files from my internal hdd to an external one.
Ok, I know it should be easy, a trillion posts say how to do this.
Sys info (from LR itself):
Lightroom version: 3.3 [711369]
Operating system: Windows Vista Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 6002)
Version: 6.0 [6002]
Application architecture: x86
System architecture: x86
Physical processor count: 2
Processor speed: 1.7 GHz
Built-in memory: 3061.6 MB
Real memory available to Lightroom: 716.8 MB
Real memory used by Lightroom: 343.8 MB (47.9%)
Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 318.7 MB
Memory cache size: 0.0 MB
System DPI setting: 96 DPI
Desktop composition enabled: Yes
Displays: 1) 1280x800
My files and their backups were scattered across 3 drives, I reformatted (a complete format - not a quick format) then proceeded to move the larger part of my library onto it using lightroom, apply some metadata and allowing lightroom to put them in date specific folders.
Phew that was a long job.
Now I wanted to take what was left of my library that currently resides on my C:/ drive in my laptop and move it onto the external 1tb drive.  It says they are already there.
Searching for them outside of windows says they are not there.  Trying to use the import dialog with the move function comes up with nothing to move.
I could drag and drop but I get a dialog box saying I can't undo anything that has been done to these files before.  I want to keep and be able to edit/undo my edits.  Isn't that what LR3 is supposed to be?
Anyways; I'd love some help.  I have tried watching some of David Marx videos (from the lightroom lab site) and a large number of threads on this forum.  I'm stumped and I'm frustrated.
Thanks for your time.

Okay....
I think I've answered my own question... sort of.
I tried the drag and drop method of copying and that seems to work.  I don't understand the dialog box and why it makes it seem so final.
So, I don't know why the import function didn't work, when the other night it did, but the drag and drop method worked where the import dialog failed and I'll have to change the folders and metadata manually.

  • Trouble moving files in lightroom 2.5

I can't seem to resolve a problem with moving files in Lightroom 2.5. While in the program, can not drag and drop images from one folder to another. If drag and drop from IE (Windows Vista), and then go back into Lightroom 2.5, catalog does not update or recognize the move was done. I have to resync the folders every time.
Based on tutorial videos that I've watched, it should be capable of these very basic things. I'm still new to LR and learning but can't seem to get past this. Is this a bug or setup issue? Not sure what I'm missing but it's driving me nuts, would appreciate any help.

When you want to move a photo to another folder in LR, you have to drag the thumbnail, not the rectangle around the thumbnail.
Lightroom does not find the new location of photos moved in Windows. Simply not a feature of the program. Therefore, you are best off to do the move in LR.

I don't know what tutorials you are watching, but as I said, locating files that have been moved in Windows is not a feature/capability of Lightroom. You have to point Lightroom to the new location of the photo, or better yet, move the photo in LR. Or, even better, don't move photos from one folder to another, instead browse your photos in Lightroom, using keywords, metadata and collections (instead of folders) as your method of organization.

I want to ask about deleting files that have been deleted in the trash but I want to remove it permanently from the trash can not, indeed I delete files that are partly contained in the application file. I want to delete files that are also quite a lot by 5 Gyga, I've tried to remove it from the normal trash remains are not removed. How should I do?

  • Important Question About Moving Files

    Aloha DW Community
I need help/confirmation on this before i do it. I have
inherrited the website from hell; that meaning the folders on my
computer and on the server are very unorganized. There are images
all over the place, in places they just should not be stored. i am
getting ready to switch to a new service provider for the site so i
want to start as fresh as possible. i have already downloaded the
whole site from the server to my local computer. i have gone
through and deleted all the old files that are no longer needed.
now before i upload this site to the new server i want to collect
all the images that are spread about and place them in the same
folder. my question is this - if i gather all the images together
and upload the site, will dreamweaver correct all the link paqths
that have been switched around by me moving all the pictures? i
know DW does this, but i am not sure if it will do it on such a
    large scale.
if you know the answer, please let me know.
    thank you in advance
    all the best to you

Do all of your organizational moves within DW's Files panel.
    You should be
    fine.

  • Simple question about moving files with applescript : Not finisched

I use this script now but the dubble files stays in folder A. I would like to delete the dubble files so the folder is empty after moving. With this script the dubble files keep is folder A.
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set this_folder to ("MAC2:A")
set these_files to every file of folder this_folder
move these_files to ("MAC2:B") with replacing
    end tell

Your script works fine on the same volume. If you are going to another volume (disk or server) a move become a duplicate by nature. You would have to delete the files after duplicate is complete.
    After everthing is moved
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set this_folder to ("PowerMac:Temp:")
set these_files to every file of folder this_folder
move these_files to ("Server:Backup:") with replacing
    delete these_files
    end tell
Delete each file as you go
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set this_folder to ("PowerMac:Temp:")
set these_files to every file of folder this_folder
    repeat with these_file in these_files
move these_file to ("Server:Backup:") with replacing
    delete these_file
    end repeat
    end tell

  • Problem moving files in Lightroom 5 UPDATED AGAIN

    Hello,
I recently changed from LR3 to 5.2 and have a problem I hope someone can help with.
I have a lot of pictures taken on a trip and have created somenew  folders within the original folder to place them into categories. When I drag files from the main folder into one of the new ones Lightroom creates a new file in the new folder , but also  leaves  one in  the original one. If I then delete the file from the original folder LR deletes it from the new one as well.
I have checked the preferences and catalog settings and read the instruction PDF but can't find anything to help.
I should point out that the catalog was created in LR3 and imported into LR5 and has behaved fine in all other respects.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Graham
UPDATE: I've just discovered that it is only that particular original folder that's affected. I am able to move files around into and out of other mother folders OK. Perhaps the folder I'm having thr problem with has been corrupted in some way?
    Message was edited by: Mahargo
Further Update: If I open Adobe Bridge I can move the files around as I please, so I guess I can use this as a workaround. (Couldn't do that in Windows Explorer as you can't view DNG files there). I'd still be grateful if anyone can shed light on this. I'll investigate further tomorrow and post again if I find an answer.

I'm also having an issue with degraded exports. Here is a screencap of the RAW file
Here's a screen capture of the exported image after I've re-imported it into lightroom. This is a JPG with sRGB and 100% quality. It's resized on export with 3264pixel long edge at 240dpi.
Here's a screen capture of the same JPG viewed in Windows Photo Viewer, but it looks the same in web browsers too.
What changed? Why is there so much dark black color running into the photo? It's like a printer is printing too much black. I want to export it so that it looks the same in all other viewers as it does in photoshop.

  • Another dumb question about transferring files

OK - so now I'm trying to transfer (as in move) the photos from my laptop to a portable drive in order to move them to my desktop machine.  I have Lightroom 2.5 installed on both PC Vista machines.  So...how do I do it without messing up my laptop.  I am concerned about what happens to the Lightroom catalog when I export them to my external drive.
    Thank you,
    J.

One way to do this is to run Export as Catalog to the external, including the images, then from the other machine, run Import from Catalog. You can choose to not export the Previews, as they will be rebuilt in the new location. You can then run the catalog from either machine or the external, but subsequent changes in one will not be carried to the others.

  • Moving Files to an External Drive

I need some help.... I just bought a new external USB drive. (1 TB) and I am now wanting to move some of the bigger files (all my iTunes library, iPhoto library, and iMovie library) to the external drive. I want to do it with the littlest amount of disconnivence possible. In other words, I don't want any messages showing up telling me that it can't find the files. So I suppose what I am asking is what is the best, and easiest way to go about moving files to the drive. Thanks

if you don't want to move your entire home folder, then the easiest way to do this is by using symbolic links.
Use my [post|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7044223&#7044223] for instructions. It explains how to do it for the Documents folder but you can do the same with your Music or Movies folders.

  • Question about .scr file while running jcwde ???

I have a tutorial about java card. it has some information about that tutorial.

    but I confuse on part (I)... what's it ???
    please explain for my confusing..
    thank for u all.

    Thanks for your reply.
I found the answers by creating and testing a very simple example in inDesign.
This all applies to inDesign files exported as FLA files and opened in Flash cs5.5.
My goal was to create a simple but interactive magazines  in inDesign, and bring them into Flash, to compile as an App as described in many of the Adobe.tv videos.
The page transitions do not port to flash.
You have to code new page transitions, one for each frame, manually with your own code, as the inDesign pages are each put on a separate page when brought into Flash.
Video and Sound is not ported into Flash in the FLA file. This is documented by Adobe. You have to re-add it once in Flash.
Simple animations made on the inDesign page, do port into Flash as separate movie clips and play automatically, when the playhead goes to the frame, where the movieclip lives.
Page spreads from inDesign, are saved as movieclips on each page frame, in flash. They are named Spread_1, etc.
You will see them play automatically, if you code the frames, using something like gottoAndStop().
It seems that this would be good to let people know in inDesign, so they do not spend a lot of time creatng effects or working with video and sound. If their goal is to port it to Flash and save as an Air app. All the video's on the subject, (and I have watched them all), show inDesign files porting into Flash, and then they  just add some animation in Flash and compile and it all works. It is not that simple. You have to basically build again, all the page transitions. And the page curl does not port.
I thought other beginners with these goals, might find this helpful. I was able to successfully compile the file for an Air App, though  I found some differences in how it works, if compiled for Air vs compiled for SWF. I have created another post, asking about these issues.
    Thanks very much.

  • Can I move files in Lightroom, and I have 5.5 to my Creative Cloud File in Lightroom?

    Moving files in Lightroom...

No moving of files is needed.
Just launch the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom. It should find your existing LR 5.5 catalog and make use of it; if it does not happen automatically, in the CC version of LR use File->Open Catalog

  • Moving RAW files from one drive to another without loosing all your work in Lightroom

I am posting this for two reasons, the first is I have been trying to figure out how to get my raw files off my hard drive & onto my external hardrive for ages, as my laptop is filling up & slowing down with the huge files my new camera captures. I have been researching this & have found it hard to find a clear answer to my particular problem using Windows 7 not a Mac.
After loosing some files in Lightroom when I moved them within Explorer instead of Lightroom, & being unable to figure out how to add a new drive in the Library module in Lightroom to move them to, I wanted to make sure I got it right when I moved the lot of them. I finally figured out a way, it might be round about, but it got it done without any trouble.
This is how I moved my files:
In Windows Explorer I moved one folder which Lightroom uses, from my laptop to the drive I want to store them all on from now on.
Then in Lightroom, under 'Library' (along the top, eg 'File' 'Edit' 'Library' etc) I selected 'Find missing photos' & led Lightroom to the new location. Now my external hd as well as my laptop hd was listed under 'Folders'  (on the Left hand side of the screen along with 'Navigator' 'Catalog' 'Folders' etc) in the Library module.
After that it was simple. Just a matter of dragging & dropping from my C drive (laptop)to my G drive (external hd) while in Lightroom; Library module. This way Lightroom keeps track of where the files are stored & nothing is lost.
From now on I will be importing raw files from my camera to my external hd & working on them all from there.
If anyone has a simpler way please share it. I am very new at this & don't profess to be an expert. So any advice would be greatly appreciated
The second reason for this post is that I'd like to know how to make sure that the adjustments made in Lightroom are stored on the external hd as well, incase anything happens to the laptop?
Is exporting the catalogue what I need to do?
Or can I back up the Lightroom adjustments to my external hd somehow?
OR when I moved the raw files did this information move with them?
I understand that my raw files are the original unaltered files & that the changes made in Lightroom are recorded seperately & applied in Lightroom itself..... Well, that's what I think I know about how it all works after a few months of using it, so please forgive me if I'm missing something & I'll be very happy to be enlightened if you'd be so kind
Happy New Year to you all!

All the adjustments are stored in the catalog (not in the file). So you want to back it up, and the external is a good place. In the catalog settings (Edit > Catalog Settings > General) there is an option to set a regular backup schedule, and you'll be asked where you want to put it.
The backup is just a regular copy of the catalog, and you can simply launch Lightroom from that, by double-clicking it.
The image files themselves should also be backed up of course, but that's outside Lightroom.

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?
