Another power issue

G4 Tower. 4 years old. No power to unit. It is connected to a valid power source (wall socket). I replaced the internal battery as others suggested. I pressed the reset button on the front. No power. Power button does not light. It's just dead. Any other helpful hints? Thanks

Hello,
I just have had the same problem with my trusty old G4 450 dual over the past couple of days. Had been having more than the rare occurance of kernel panics (as much as two a day or so lately). Have you seen this happen to you too lately? May be related to dying PMU battery, can't say for certain, but I think I've read reference to this before.
Bought a replacement CUDA/PMU (I've read references to both nicknames) battery yesterday (~$10). Popped it in with high hopes...nothing. Still no power-on, not even light to the power button. Also had held down the internal PMU reset button next to the battery for a couple seconds after replacement. After still no power, I did re-open the case and push the PMU reset button a couple of times (which I've now read is not reccommended to do, only once, or the PMU chip may stop responding...! Luckily I've made it out OK)...
So I left it sit all evening as I went out, with battery in place, and I believe the power cord still plugged in to mac and wall socket. Later that night, on a whim, tried again. Viola...the power button lit up! Pressed a little more firmly and I hear the wonderful boot up chime!
Then I unplug it, move it back on the desk with the monitor, re-plug everything back in...press power again. NOTHING again. Tried unplugging everything else (extra usb and firewire stuff) except monitor and keyboard. Still no power up.
Disgruntled, I leave it again, plugged in, still with new PMU battery in of course, overnight.
Tried again this morning...like magic, it boots up again...! Still going, so I hope it'll be OK now. I'm understandably afraid to turn it off again!
So maybe, just maybe, it takes some time for the PMU battery to take effect, recharging the PMU chip and its associated circuits? I haven't read this before, so I'm basically making this up. Don't know why it went this way for me (hoping its not something else like loose wiring, but I've done a spot check of that). But maybe just give it a few hours/overnight, and try again. And don't keep hitting the CUDA/PMU reset button, and wait a few minutes before replugging in the cord and hitting the power button.
Good luck.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

  • Unable to Troubleshoot Power Issues on Mac mini 2011

I have been having odd and intermittent power issues with my Mac mini 2011 and could really use some help before I resign myself to taking it into an Apple Store. It's under warranty, but I now live in another country so I hope I don't need to ship it should it come down to that.
However, I have searched this topic a lot, and not only have I tried troubleshooting it, I haven't seen any power issues with other owners of this model. That leads me to think that the power supply itself is probably OK.
First of all, I live in China and the building I live in seems to have a questionable power supply. The air conditioner for example simply would not work and the repairman spent two hours messing around with wires inside the outlet and in the breakers. That did the trick, so I wonder if I'm simply not getting enough juice?
    Main symptoms:
    - My monitor recognizes an analog signal but will not light up (black monitor). Unplugging and replugging adaptor doesn't do anything.
    - Startup Keyboard Commands (e.g. Cmmd-R) may work, but I can't tell because the monitor won't light up. Letting the computer boot up though I can hear keyboard volume keys and such making the standard sounds. I can usually restart using the keyboard too.
    - My 2T external HD more often than not dismounts as well.
    - I can't hear any computer activity after the chime (hard drive, etc.).
    - Since I can hear the chime and there is audio feedback through the keyboard, I think that eliminates hardware problems such as logic board failure or bad RAM.
    - I can't boot even if I unplug all USB peripherals.
    - Holding down the power button (I have it set to make the computer sleep as well as shut down) often won't shut down the computer, but it seems to stay in sleep no matter how long I hold it. Unplugging the computer finally shuts it down, obviously.
    - Unplugging and waiting 5 minutes or so and powering up again doesn't seem to make any difference, nor does switching sockets, plugging directly into the wall, etc.
Problems began about two weeks ago, got better, and then worse again. Now I'm just keeping the computer and monitor on (never sleep 24/7).
Miraculously, after much frustration and countless restarts, suddenly the screen will turn on to reveal a fully booted system that was running all along in the background. No startup screen- the monitor just magically comes on again. Often I find that my external has unmounted, but it's no big deal to get to remount. At this stage, the Mac is still very quiet and for a while the system is sluggish, though it hops back into action in 5 or 10 minutes.
At first I thought it was just my monitor, and though that's possible I suppose, it seems I'm just not getting enough juice. Once the monitor is on though, everything is fine: I can power it off and on with no problems. But I can't just leave my computer on forever though.
    Any help appreciated.

Well, with the other monitor (which did not work with the mini either but worked fine on a laptop), I was able to narrow the trouble spot down to either a faulty Mini Display to VGA adaptor or a damaged port. I could determine that all the other ports (incld. the USB drive, programs, internet, etc., were all working fine behind the big black GUI all through sound feedback, so I seriously doubted it could be a supply problem or a residential electric problem.
I took my mini and adaptor to a "Mac Shop" (reseller) here in China, and found it quite professional, just like a Mac Store. They tested my machine, and although they didn't have VGA monitors, they said I could return the new $30 USD adaptor if it didn't work. But as I'm writing this on the monitor now, the new adaptor did the trick.
The long and short of all this is that I've read a lot about display problems with the mini and I suspect that most of these problems are adaptor related. I myself tried to save some bucks by buying a third party plug and lived and learned. I hope the Apple adaptor works like a champ, and if it doesn't, I'll know the first thing to eliiminate next time.

  • Hp pavilion dv6 power issue

I have a HP Pavilion dv6t 2300 laptop. Few days ago, the laptop suddenly stopped running with power issue. I bought a new battery thinking it was a battery issue. When I plug in the battery, AC led light won't turn on and the laptop won't charge. Soon as I take the battery out, AC led light is on.
I tried to turn on the laptop removing the battery with only AC power on, but it will not turn on either.
Is the the problem with the circuit board or is there any step I can do to make this work? Any help is much appreciated.

Have you tried another charger to make sure the adapter isn't the problem?

    Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          2
      Total Number Of Cores:          8
L2 Cache (per processor):          12 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.6 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MP31.006C.B05
      SMC Version (system):          1.25f4
I recently moved my MacPro to a new building. Almost immediately it started taking a long time to boot. Twice it hung on the blue screen for approximately 10 minutes before continuing to the login screen. Problems were intermittent, sometimes it would boot fine. Then it started having trouble powering on at all. It would click and the light would turn on and off in less than 5 seconds. I took it to a different building: no powering on. I took it twice to the Apple store for the same problem, it turned on both times so I had to take it back with no help. Back at the original building, the computer turns on sometimes after leaving it unplugged overnight. I suspected an issue with the power in the building so I plugged it into a UPS. Initially it was only on a Surge Protector. On one recent occasion I accidentally nudged it with my knee and it powered down and back up. On another occasion I was sitting still watching a video and it powered down and back up with no intervention.
This will not reproduce at the Apple store. Each time it is there it has booted up perfectly using both my power cord and Apple’s power cord. Don’t know what to do next.
Any thoughts on what to try before replacing power supply and power cable? Is it possible this is not a power-related issue?

make sure to use something in 1000VA or better for your UPS and that it can support your system. May seem like $200 is a lot but then they work and give you adequate shutdown or to ride out a 5 minute power issue.

you don't need to nor is it that effective to leave unplugged over night or something.
hit the power on for 10 seconds while every cord and device is unplugged though.

  • Mac Pro power issue...

Wondered if anyone else had this issue. I have a Mac Pro from mid 2008. Recently, it has done the following:
    - From a 'cold' start, it will power up for 3-4 secs and then power off again. It will not reach the grey screen.
    - It will only fully power up after about 30-40 attempts...
Also, it will now sometimes just power off completely without warning.
Anyone else had these issues? It doesn't seem to be a graphics card issue.

Some more info on this problem, hopefully someone can help.
    More system details:
    Early 2008 Mac Pro
No extra memory or internal installations - just 2gb ram.
I found another thread which describes my problem completely....
"Problem 1: In the morning when I turn it on, on some occasions it will power on for 5 or so seconds, then power right back off again. Sometimes this happens after 5, 10 or even 20 seconds (right in the middle of OS X or Windows boot). The only thing I note is that if it can get as far as the boot selector (hold alt at boot) screen, it won't cut out at that point, only sometimes after I wait a moment then select a boot option. This can sometimes happen 10 or 20 times in a row before it will eventually turn on and function normally.
Problem 2: Random power cut off, sometimes at idle, sometimes while browsing, or using any other app. I can't pin it on any one particular function. I know it's not a temperature problem, I have temp monitors on my menu bar and as far as I can see it's been fairly stable in that regard. Most of the time, I can power up the computer again but very occasionally it will revert to what I described in problem 1.
I have run the apple hardware test, with no errors being produced, and have had the local apple reseller/service centre take a look, with their tech reporting no issues. (He referred to something called ARD being run on a cycle of 20 or 30 times with nothing indicating a problem) I've taken off every non essential piece of hardware, tried with only the stock ram - and the newer ram to no avail of my issues. The only thing that I can still suspect myself is a power issue, however there is another PC in the room that has not had any issues what-so-ever."
Needless to say I'll be soooooo disappointed if this 'top-end' machine has only got hardware to last 2.5 years. My pitifully power-less Dell has lasted longer.
    Any advice please...?

  • HP Pavilion dv2699 Verve Special Edition laptop power issue.

Hi, my daughter has the laptop above.  She says it has been running hot for the past few months and now when she turns it on it will turn off in about 15-20 seconds. I am getting ready to look at it an would welcome any comments, advice, etc. if anyone has had the same problem.  My plan is to try another power cord.  Clean fan and heat sink {from the HP manual, this requires disassembling most of the computer to get to it.  The manual indicates a power panel which appears to be fairly accessible that could be the issue?  I don't see a reference to a power pack card and cable like my HP has.  Again, would welcome advice.  Thanks.

    Hi
You can't change the processor from AMD to Intel, the system board sockets dont go with each other,
You may have to change the whole board itself, moreover the processor would most probably integrated with the board.
But I think AMD processor in that laptop is quite good & it's getting good reviews

  • Strange power issues

I am having some strange power issues with my six week old Macbook. The symptoms are as follows (I apologise in advance for the length of this post) :
    1) If the battery charge is below 50%, and you connect the magsafe charger prior to power-on, the charge light will illuminate until the grey boot screen comes up. Then the charge light turns of completely & the Macbook boots up using battery power. If I disconnect the magsafe connector, followed by the mains and reconnect in the reverse sequence, the light turns green momentarily and then orange (as it should for charging)
    2) If I start the coconutBattery application after booting into OSX, while the charge is still below 50%, the same issue occurs again with the magsafe. It appears to happen at the exact time the application queries the battery. I can get the charger working if I follow the same disconnect/mains/reconnect sequence.
    3) The issues above also seems to occur when the battery updater checks the battery. The Macbook does not recognise that the charger is plugged in.
    4) If the charge is above 50%, then all works as expected. The coconutBattery application does not affect the charger. The Macbook works as normal.
I have tested with a brand new magsafe & a new battery - symptoms are identical. I have noticed several other non-consistent issues - the flashing green light/orange light on the magsafe connection, unusual battery life calculations (70+ hours).
I have performed calibrations & reset the PMU and the PRAM, and have all current updates. And I have spent a large amount of time in the forums looking at similar issues without much success. I am beginning to suspect the logic board (DC chip) is at fault, however I dont relish the idea of dropping my new Macbook at my local Apple Repair centre & getting it back three weeks later with the same issue.
My current cycles (on this new battery) are at 2 with a full charge capacity of 5142 mAh.
My questions to the community are:
Does anyone have a similar experience with these types of symptoms?
Or can someone illustrate on what would cause the Macbook to believe that the magsafe was disconnected? Whatever internal system call the coconutBattery application uses to recover details from the battery appears to trigger this behavior.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this one.
    Macbook Core 2 Duo - 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Just another observation, based on reading some of Apple's documentation regarding the AC charger:
"If the adapter works after this 60-second "rest," you most likely have a line noise issue with your power source that will require you to reset the adapter (by repeating this moment of rest) periodically. This happens when the AC adapter's over voltage protection feature senses ground noise and then turns off the adapter."
Could a sudden draw of power required at a 50% and below charge trip this over voltage protection feature? I know the charging draw varies based on current battery level.
I have tested this in UPS protected boards with the same result.

  • Mac Book power issues.

My Mac Book Pro will no longer power up. What is the likely problem?

    Hello there Radar47,
If your MacBook Pro is still not turning on, I would recommend you use the troubleshooting information in the following article to help isolate and hopefully resolve the issue here, named:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

  • W520 bios 1.39 power issues

I just updated my w520 to bios 1.39, and am having some power issues.
Immediately after the update, when the machine rebooted, I got a warning from the bios that my power supply was not rated for this machine (or something like that, I don't recall the exact wording). This was with the w520 docked, using the 170W power supply that came with the dock.  I've rebooted a few times, and the warning hasn't reappeared, but I still have another issue..
After I sleep/undock and work undocked for a while, when I return the w520 to the dock and wake it up, it does not recognize that it is connected to ac power. the screen stays dimmes and the battery indicator does not show the little ac plug symbol. If I unplug the power supply from the dock and reconnect it, the w520 beeps, the screen brightens and the ac plug icon shows up on the battery indicator.
Is anyone else with the w520 dock seeing power issues with the new bios update?

Revert to an earlier BIOS level (try 1.38 and see if the problem is still present). The ECP was updated in 1.39 to 1.35 for a battery issue so it's worth trying to see if backleveling the BIOS and ECP eliminates the issue that you've described.

  • IBook G4 + Power issues = No support from Applecare?

This post is going to be kind of a rant plus an actual question:
I've noticed on-going power issues with my iBook G4 for a while, and have called Apple about it. Despite having an AppleCare plan on my iBook, they said there was nothing I could do besides buy a new battery and see how that goes. I said that being a hardware technician, I didn't think the issue was with the battery, but we'd see how it goes.
Last night, my iBook powered itself off for no reason. Worked fine when I had it on the AC adapter, but powered off as soon as I unplugged the power cable. The battery indicator on the battery did show three bars of power.
I called Apple this morning, and they said to check the battery at the closest Apple Store to me. I told her that the closest one is two hours away. She gave me the number to a local service center, who upon calling, has been closing for 5 years.
I called Apple back and spoke with another technician. Told him that I was sure that the problem was with the system itself, as other people have been having this issue according to the forum. The response I got was a little...well, not good.
Even though I have an AppleCare Protection Plan on my iBook, even if the problem is not with the battery, and with the system itself, I was told I would need to pay for all repairs. I was like "Isn't the point of an extended warranty is that I wouldn't need to pay?" The tech explained to me that "AppleCare isn't an extended warranty, it just guarantees support through them if you call in." Needless to say, I got off the phone with him after that sentence and thanked him for his time.
Long story short: I'm stuck. From experience, do other people on here think its the battery or the board? Apple seems to be of no help at all, despite having a three-year "protection plan" on the device.
    What does anyone else think?

Do you by any chance have a friend with a battery that is known to be good? If you could determine that your computer has the same problems even with a battery that is known to be good, then you have a good argument for the problem being with the board. If the problems disappear, then they might be due to a failing battery.
If you aren't satisfied with whoever you talk to at tech support, you can request to talk to a product specialist--these guys have a higher level of knowledge and experience and you might get further with them than you can with the first level support person.
I agree that problems with the board should be covered by your warranty. If you are at all close to the end of your warranty, be sure and get a case number. If you can establish that the problem initially occurred while you were under warranty, Apple should honor it even if it takes a little time to resolve.
    Good luck!

  • I just updated the software on my iPad and now I cannot update my Aps or install new ones.  I ran a diagnostic and that resulted in "power issue." It wouldn't let me select what my options were.  Any ideas?

Don't know where to get help.  I just updated the software and I am having issues with not being able to update Aps or install new ones.  The circles just spin and Aps just say "waiting."  I tried running a diagnostic with the apple store and it came back with "power issues" (?) as a result.  It wouldn't let me select an option to see what steps I could take to fix it, it just backed out of the page.  I just don't know what to do.....

    Hi,
Thank you for your reply, I did go to my general settings, but for some odd reason I don't have a restrictions setting, or a reset setting. I thought I could reset all the setting to see if it could be that, but as I said there aren't any.
My husband also has the iPad 2, and also did the software update and hasn't had any problems at all. I took both iPad's and compared the settings thinking maybe there could be a setting that could have been changed when the update was done.

  • Z77A-GD65 power issue/bad system board?

Looking for advice. I am afraid its a bad board, but some symptoms point at power which also makes no sense.
This is what the WHOLE system should look like.
    MSI Z77A-GD65 system board
    Intel 3770K 3.5Ghz
    Anted Kuhler H20 620
    G.Skills RipJaws 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL (on the test list)
Asus nVidia GTX 680 video card
    OCX Vertex 3 256MB SSD
    Seagate 500GB data drive
    Razer Lycosa Keyboard
    Razer DeathAdder Mouse
Antec Sonata IV case with Neo ECO 620W power supply
It seems to me that 620W should be more than enough. According to my calculations thats roughly 330W of power draw against a 620W powersupply.
I am not currently over clocking.
So what the system does look like is:
If I connect the 500GB drive then windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I place all four sticks of RAM in the system windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I leave the 500GB standard sata drive off and only use 3 sticks of RAM... well we get a solid system and I am writing this message on it.
3 sticks of ram appear to work in any 3 slots and allow the system to boot, except 1,3,4. That combo also resulted in the reboots at the windows logo.
I first thought it was RAM, originally I was using Corsair Vengeance. I saw some posts here about people having the same problem, and noted that the Corsiar RAM was not tested and switch to a the tested G.Skill instead.
Any ideas? It does not completely seem like a System board issue, but it certainly should not be power. All heat levels are well within normal and as I said the system works great if I leave off the drive and one stick of RAM.
    Thanks guys....

System torn down, and put back together. (Found out I was out of Thrermal Compound, so I had to run to the store to get some.)
No long leads, only 9 stand offs matching each mount point on the systemboard.
Back together... problem is the exact same.
However, back to the hard drive issue. I decided to play with that since I was getting no where with 4 sticks of RAM.
What I have discovered is that with NO sata cable connecting the drive to the system board, if I try to power the two 250GB standard sata drives the system reboots just as the Windows logo should come up.
The fact that this behavior is so close to the RAM behavior... I am back to thinking its a power issue, though system board is still a chance... its just easier to buy a new better power supply than the Antec Neo Power 620 that came with the case. (I have not ever had a problem with Antec before, and will likely just buy one of their higher end power supplies to replace it, but I think I will try it next, just in case.)
I am not seeing any strange behavior power wise as far as any monitor shows... but connecting power to a sata drive that is NOT connected with a sata cable and causing a reboot just screams power at me.
Anymore thoughts today. In the mean time off to play Secret World with just the SSD and two sticks of RAM, which still runs rock solid.

I often receive these insufficient USB power for devices messages a dozen times even when I do not have devices like camera, Ipad, Ipod, and Tascam digital audio recorder plugged in. Is there a way to troubleshoot these USB routers or should I consider that one of the routers may be defective and replace them?
