ANOTHER problem starting iMovie

Okay, I've read some other posts here about iMovie problems, but my issue seems to be different. When I launch the application, it bounces, and the blue light comes on, but then... nothing. I can see the menu options at the top of the screen, and when I click on "file," none of the options are available except "import from camera" (which doesn't work, either).
I can't open any of my previous iMovie projects. I double-click on them, and nothing happens. No error message... nothing.
I just installed version 7.1.1 and it hasn't helped at all. All my other apple updates are current.
I haven't used iMovie in a few months, so I have no idea what is going on here. Any help would be much appreciated.

This really doesn't make any sense, but it worked...
I read on another post that changing the color settings will solve the problem (God knows why). So I went into System Preferences, clicked on "Monitor," then "Color"... and here's the weird part... I didn't do anything else, but I noticed an immediate, although slight, shift in the color palette of my monitor. It still looks good, but slightly different (perhaps warmer). I didn't actually "change" anything, but after I did this, iMovie worked.
I think it works on the same principle as when Fonzie punched the jukebox on Happy Days.

Well, my two-month-old MBP has no qualms about booting from a no-name external USB HD I put together...
Given that is is a common point of failure, I would imagine a large Apple Store should keep a stock of HD's on hand.
Now since you're a bit desperate and the genie pops up til Saturday and you seem to be the enterprising kind, let's try an experiment: if you have room enough in the external HD and assuming it isn't a Time Machine volume, why don't you plug it in, stick the Install CD and see if the installer lets you select the external drive as the install target. If you can install Leopard on it, on top of the backup without reformatting, and the Mac can boot from the drive afterwards, at least you would have some functionality restored and would be able to pull your stuff from the internal HD. Apple says booting from USB drives is not supported but that does not equate to not possible; some brands do work. Risks? Always. You can always lose your backup. Like I said, a challenge for an enterprising gal....
Next time around, consider having a bootable external clone at hand for rainy days. I keep three myself...

Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:

Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)
iMovie does not, AFAIK, use QT 10.

Hard to say Why - but see if this helps
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
• iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
• Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
• Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
• a codec is used that doesn't work
• problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
• version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
• preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
• other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
• External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
• USB-flash-memories do not work
• Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
• iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.

• Screen must be set to million-colors
• Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
• Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
• Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
• Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
• In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

The Apple website also offers Perian as a workaround regarding audio on the Tiger operating system with the latest QuickTime. The latest QuickTime upgrade didn’t allow for audio playback of AVI files, which is why Perian is now offered as a work around by us and by Apple.
It seems as though you are able to playback your videos, as well as use them in outside applications. If this is not the case, and you are having issues using your Flip video or your Flip video program, feel free to contact us further.

This is my email to Flip Video on 26 May 2008:
My MAC Updater downloaded the new QT 7.4.5 on 5 Apr 2008. I have been making movies in iMovie, and then posting them to YouTube. In the beginning I uploaded the movies as MOV files but soon discovered AVI files (larger file and longer time to upload) had more clarity when viewed on YouTube. Once the new QT 7.4.5 downloaded all my AVI files had picture, but no sound! I downloaded the Perian component as posted in QT discussions. The sound returned to the AVI files. However, when I Exported an AVI movie from iMovie the picture quality was worse than the MOV movie. There is something wrong with the new QT 7.4.5 when working with AVI, my AVI movies look terrible. These AVI files were all downloaded from my Ultra Flip Video camera with Flip’s codec 3vix. Flip is aware of this problem and acknowledged it last Friday. Flip says Apple is aware of the problem.
My MAC PowerPc G4 has performed well in the past two months when working with the Flip Video camera. So, at Flip Video’s suggestion I upgraded the operating system to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. Flip Video says their camera works with OS 10.5. Once OS 10.5 was uploaded I soon discovered that iMovie 08 would not operate on my PowerPc G4, 1.86 MHz. The speed requirement for iMovie 08 is 1.9 GHz.
At this point of “spinning my wheels for nearly a month” with this Flip Video camera, I decided to purchase a new iMac. On May 2, 2008, I walked out of the Apple Store in Walnut Creek with the new iMac 20-inch: 2.66GHz. Now the Flip video camera should work and all my video problems solved. However, this was not to be.
When I attempted to Import Flip Video AVI and MOV files into iMovie 08 the files were “grayed out” and would not Import. None of my previous Flip Video files would Import. I tried making new Flip Video movies, they also would not Import into iMovie 08.
At another Apple Store, the tech suggested I download the previous version of iMovie HD. I did this and with hours of working through the different Export options I was able to create movies to post again on youTube. However, the picture quality of the newer iMovies has never approached the quality of my last post before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. Remember my problems started with QT 7.4.5. Well, my new iMac came with QT 7.4.1, I have not Uploaded QT 7.4.5 and won’t until Flip Video fixes this problem.
Examples of my Flip Video movies can be viewed on youTube at: sffoggydays. The last video with excellent picture quality was posted 6 Apr 2008 titled “A Day at the San Francisco Zoo, Chapter Nine, L-Taravel Ride to BART.” This video was made in iMovie and Exported before QT 7.4.5 downloaded. All the youTube Flip Videos made after 6 Apr 2008 have poor picture quality.
It is time for Flip Video camera to stop “passing the buck” to Apple. When manufactures of operating system such as Apple and Microsoft create newer and upgraded systems, it is the responsibility of the manufactures of applications to redo their programs for operating on the new systems. Here is where Flip Video is not accepting this responsibility to Mac users of their camera. The Flip Video application/codex/drivers need to be updated in order to fix the following problems:
- No sound on AVI files in QT 7.4.5
- No Import of AVI and MOV files in iMovie 08
- Poor picture quality for youTube in Export of iMovie HD
I like my Flip Video camera, want to continue making movies for youTube, and recommending the camera to others. The Flip Video camera people need to fix these problems for Mac users.

I also purchased the Flip Video - was thrilled to see that they worked with Apple computers. I made several movies with it when I had my PowerBook G4. I went on a great vacation & took several once in a lifetime videos. Got home & couldn't wait to put them in my iMoive -06, burn them on my iDVD and sent them to several family members & friends. Before I got the chance, I had my system updater tell me that there was a new version to QT. GREAT, I thought, just in time for my vacation videos. Like you, after the QuickTime upgrade, I got video, but no sound. I was SICK about it! I also wrote to the Flip people & got a response somewhat like yours. I left the videos on my Flip which left no room for any others, but I didn't want to take the chance of losing them. After reading from Flip that it would work with OS 10.5 system, I talked myself into getting a new MacBook Pro. Came with all the upgrades iLife -08 and the OS 10.5.2 OK...finally, after months of stressing over losing the vacation videos, I had all I needed to save them! Of course the $2,000.00 price tag hurt a bit, but I deserve a new computer.
Well...I STILL can't get my priceless vacation videos edited and burned! I tried downloading 2 different programs that were supposed to help convert my Flip movies to something that would work, but they haven't. I could get it to work on my desktop with QT, but what good is that?? I want to make DVD's to send to others & save for my grandkids (if I ever am lucky enough to get some!)
I'm TOTALLY disgusted & feel I've wasted my money on the Flip Camera (that at one time I loved & was seriously considering giving them as gifts) the $2,000.00 on a new computer (that even though I do deserve, didn't REALLY need one yet!) AND I still have vacation videos that I can't share!
So... I agree! Flip should honor their word that is printed on the box & MAKE it work with all Apple computers. Surely they can find a fix!

Oh, Flip also said they 'heard' that QuickTime Pro would work with iMovie -08 - although they haven't actually tested it themselves. NO THANKS!!! I've got WAY too much money invested in this stupid Flip camera!

Trying to start Imovie on Mac Os server on MacMini it shows message "Qwartz Extreme required" and quits.

I Installed oMovie on my new Mac Mini OS X Server edition in order to run comlicated and long movie calculatons with a huge amount of source data, that I do not want to keep on my MacBook Pro. But upon strating Imovie its shows me the message "Quarz Extreme required" and quits. Mac Book Pro works with Imovue Perfectly, but I do not want to waste hard drive for huge amounts of source data. I'm working with server through screen sharing on my MacBook.
Who can help me with this issue, Please!!!

Problem starting NetBeans

Hi, I am new to Java ... 1st Day ... which means Ive been trying to install it all. ... And I have not been succesfull.
I've downloaded and installed jre-6u7-windows-i586-p and then netbeans-6.1-ml-windows ...
After this I went to tutorials trying to follow the "Hello World"-instructions ... but the IDE is not running.
1) I pressed on the desktop icon ... not running.
2) I pressed on the menustart icon ... not running.
3) I went to the directory where the .exe is ... not running.
I checked if it was running in background but not executing. But there was no unneccesary process (or perhaps 3 at this time) running.
When I did ^^(3) however ... I noticed an error-log was beeing made. And I have reported the bug as instructed in it. However I would prefer feedback here incase someone knows what the problem might be perhaps.
So my problem is ... After first time installation and registration of Java and NetBeans... I cannot get NetBeans to work. I also tried it in savemode but that did not help either.

Well I did run jdk-6u7-windows-i586-p first. However at installing I got an error-msg. One that seems to be known but they havent had a sollution for yet. So following the instructions, ... I installed the JDK by using the online-installement. After that I installed NetBeans. But like I said before ... NetbBeans just aint starting up.
It might very well be that the error-log presented above has got nothing to do with the actual error. That it just occurs because there is another problem. But I cant find any information anywhere concerning the problem that NetBeans aint starting up and just sticks to desktop. The only help I could find where about NetBeans erors occuring when NetBeans is alrdy running.

The discs that come with your Mac are "machine specfic" and cannot be used on another Mac.

Problem starting help in 8.0.2

In Dreamweaver 8.0.2 (Windows XP) whenever I try to access
the help files (F1 or Help/Dreamweaver Help) I get an error
message, "Problem starting help."
This has only been a problem recently. The only thing that I
can think of that has changed is that I upgraded to IE7. I read in
other postings to the forum that accessing help files made
Dreamweaver crash and the problem seemed to be related to IE7. This
is not what happens to me; it doesn't lock up or crash, it just
gives the error message. I tried the fix that was recommended in
the crashing scenario (rename PSAPI.DLL to PSAPI_OLD.DLL) but that
makes no difference.
Is there another solution?

1 through 3 and Dreamweaver MX 2004 and 8. The thinking seems to be
the only solution is a clean install of Windows, although no one
seems to have offered this as a solution for the final release
version of IE7's conflict with Dreamweaver's Help files. Reading

Another problem with SOAP sender

I have another problem with SOAP scenario in a different environment (PI 7.0) from my earlier post.
Scenario:
Soap Sender -> PI -> Soap Receiver
Following steps from GoogleSearch SOAP scenario in the SAP How-to Guide for SAP NetWeaver '04 entitled: "How To... Use the XI 3.0 SOAP Adapter" version 1.00 - March 2006.
I have loaded in the api.google.com/GoogleSearch.wsdl file as an External definition and created the SOAP receiver as described in the How-to guide. It takes a doGoogleSearch as input and sends back a doGoogleSearchResponse (Sync Call).
Note that the GoogleSearch.wsdl contains a complex type ResultElementArray that refers to ResultElement\[\], and a DirectoryCategoryArray that refers to DirectoryCategory\[\]. The ResultElement and DirectoryCategory types are defined in the GoogleSearch.wsdl file.
Problem One:
The generated WSDL for the SOAP sender contains the ResultElementArray and DirectoryCategoryArray types but it DOES NOT contain the required ResultElement and DirectoryCategory types. XML Spy complains that this WSDL is not valid because the type ResultElement\[\] is not defined.
Problem Two:
I generate a SOAP message in XML Spy, provide values for the doGoogleSearch fields, and send. In SXMB_MONI, the SOAP sender payload contains only the <key> value from the doGoogleSearch message body, i.e. <part name="key" type="xsd:string" />
The other doGoogleSearch fields seem to be missing, i.e.
<part name="q" type="xsd:string" />
<part name="start" type="xsd:int" />
<part name="maxResults" type="xsd:int" />
<part name="filter" type="xsd:boolean" />
<part name="restrict" type="xsd:string" />

Problem with iMovie with remote accounts

Hello.
I got some problems that have been annoying me for some time now.
I have Mac Pro SL server, 40 iMacs and over 60 users. All the accounts are on the server. It all works pretty well, but there are these little things that I cant figure out. The users log on in, and start iMovie, everything works, they can do what ever they like, UNTILL, they want to capture something with the iSight camera, and thats something they really want to do. The camera windows comes up, then they press "Capture". When they want to start the capture after the step where you set the event name & such, they get an error, something like
"The importing was canceled. You may not have premission to write to *the default imovie directory*".
The thing I don't get is that it works for my own network account, but not for them. I tried to give a test account same rights as I have, but it didn't work. And my account was created in the Workgroup manager, just like everyone elses.
Anything I could try to make this work?

I understand that you are unable to trim clips using iMovie. I would need a little more information on how you were attempting to trim a clip to provide a better answer. However, make sure you have the movie project open and are selecting the clip that you wish to trim as this will activate the clip trimmer.

Load default configuration in BIOS to fix sound, caused another problem

Hey !
I have had problem to get sound in my T61, and used Lenovo support, Troubleshooting, to fix it.
I did as it told in Lenovo Support.
In BIOS Setup utility menu setup I pressed F9.
Then I selected YES to load the default configuration.
After that I pressed F10 key and YES to save the configuration.
But after that when I start the computer it says that a failur has occured, and windows has shot down to avoid problems with the computer.
Is there any way of going back in the BIOS setup, so I should get it work again ?

I went to a company, and they fixed it, Don't ask me how ! I did not understand when they described it.
Anyway I have another problem with the sound, as you can see in the other message !
They tried to fix that to, but could not solve the problem.

WLC and windows radius issue and another problem

Hi everyone.
We have a problem with a costumer wireless infraestructure which has a WLC using a Windows 2003 radius server. for authentication.
The users can't connet to the SSID from monday. Anything haven't been changed and the configuration is correct.
I think its a client problem because the clients who use Linux can connect.
Any idea?
I have attached a debug dot1x events when a windows client try to connect.
We have another problem with another SSID using local wpa2/pkm/ascii authentication..
This SSID is used for smartphones. The clientes who use Android can connet, the clients who use IPhone can't.
Is this a cospiracy? xD

for the debug you attached, I see the client send an EAPOL start message, after it gets the Identity request. It seems to move beyond that, and then

Problem starting database

TOday morning standby server closed (due to power problem). and now having problem starting standby database with the following error message

Shutdown the standby database, copy the controlfile to the locations you want, edit the pfile and add the locations of the controlfiles in contfrol_files parameter , save it and startup nomount pfile='location';
Then mount the standby database and create spfile from pfile;
