Another question about iPhones and malware/virus

Thought I would post this as a separate question.
iPhone 4s. legit (not jail broke)
I know the iOS is pretty protected against virus and malware.  And that you cannot download things onto the phone other than through the app store
But what about what they call drive by downloads? Where you go to a web page and it automatically installs something without asking?

UACount wrote:
thanks all. This is so freaky to me. If the iOS is so safe, why doesnt every PC use it?  And I dont mean that sarcastically
It's very safe but it also puts very severe limits on what the user can do to tweak the OS and on things that applications can do. For example, most people would balk at only being able to by applications for their computer from one approved source. In fact, a lot of people don't like that about iPhones. Some people prefer freedom to modify their device to security.
In fact, the Mac OS, which historically been less prone to viruses is adopting some of the feature of iOS.

  • Ask another question about JIN and C/C++

Using JNI on Solaris, is there any differences to build a shared library compiled from C code or C++ code?

    Huh?
If you create a C/C++ file and use jni.h and use the method signatures from javah then either file will work. Depending on various factors, like the file extension, then you might have to specify different command line options to get the file to build.
A C++ file could have templates would add additional problematic concerns.
If you are talking about a C/C++ object files/shared libraries in general then there are conceptual differences (like mangled names) but no actual differences (mangled name is a legitimate C ident.)

  • Yet another question about exporting and video quality

    Kind people,
I know this question has been asked many, many times, and I have searched and read up of the topic, but I would also like to ask it.
I shot my video on a Canon Vixia HF10, downloaded it to Final Cut Express to edit, exported it as Quick Time Movie, dropped it in iDVD, then played it on my TV and the quality was…..not good. The video was a little fuzzy and there were ghosts. Are there any settings I should go back and check in iDVD.
    Wolfgang

    Hi(Bonjour)!
What is the format recorded by this camera?
How did you capture/ingest your video material in FCE?
What was your sequence format in timeline?
How did you export your sequence (specify exact steps, menus and command)?
What was your iDVD project settings?
What was the iDVD quality setting?
Did you monitor your DVD on computer screen or TV set?

  • Another question about processors and cores.

I did a search and review, but I'm not clear about one thing. There was one thread where it was mentioned that more cores would allow for more video streams to play in real time on the timeline. I need to get at least two HD video streams with alpha, one audio stream, a background still, and a foreground text overlay to all run at once. Can an iMac with just the i3 or i5 dual processors do that, or do I need to step up to the quad core iMac or the MacPro?

    Shane Ross wrote:
I can get by with just one HD stream and one audio stream. So for that, will any of the processors in an iMac do?
HD stream. WHAT FORMAT of HD? DVCPRO HD...HDV...PRORES...yes. UNCOMPRESSED HD...no. And again, the amount of streams isn't related to processors...it is related to HARD DRIVE speed.
For the intermediate video with alpha, what is the best HD format to use that has no compression?
NO compression? Well, the only NO COMPRESSION alpha codecs there are is ANIMATION...and that isn't playable. ProRes 4444 is the one with the Alpha built in. It is compressed, but pretty darn lossless.
Point is, you need a good 4-5 drive eSATA RAID...or better.
    Shane
I start with an image sequence out of Lightwave 3D. I currently use PNG images with alpha. Those are then rendered into video clips - one talking, one not. I use those clips over and over again in a single layer on the timeline and match them to the audio. That intermediate project is then rendered out with alpha and used in the final project.
That's why I need an uncompressed/lossless format, because I'm building up the project with a couple of prior renders. Sounds like ProRes 4444 would work unless there is a no-compression format.
How could I use an eSATA when none of the Macs have an eSATA connection?

  • Question about iPhone and steam

Is it ok to have my iPhone in the bathroom while I have a shower?  The room gets quite steamy.

i wouldnt because the steam could get the phone wet and could cause that tab to change color which shows water damage so if anything happened to the phone you would have to pay out of warranty replacement

  • Question about iPhone and Music

I'm a long time PC user but about to buy an iPhone.
I'm a little confused how iTunes works. Are there any restrictions about the type or source of the music I put on my iPhone? I have thousands of MP3s that have been ripped from CDs over the years.
    Thanks!

The iPhone will gladly accept all your MP3s with no issues. You have to import them into iTunes. iTunes can then help you organize them, put album cover art on them, etc. iTunes is the only way to put music onto your iPhone right now, but it doesnt care where the MP3 came from.

  • Yet another question about the macprotector malware.

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, but I've looked at many threads stating how to remove the macprotector and macdefender from our computer. I haven't yet found an explanation as to how this scam/virus (whatever it is) is getting on certain websites that I thought were once safe? I love my mac, but have been quite depressed that I'm now wary to visit any site. Also, if this has been downloaded (against my will and I have done my best to remove it), what are the negative effects that can happen to my computer? Like are they getting information or slowly destroying my laptop?
Thanks to everyone for your patience with all the boards relating to this topic.

Hi, here is how to remove it by yourself...
    http://goo.gl/J7R6A
Script that I create which, will help you remove it .....
    http://goo.gl/rGV62
    What is does.
Depending on the version it just creates a bunch of random fake notification and claims your infected. If you keep getting it then most likely you have Allow popups and "Open Safe files" in safari on. The only damage is if you give the criminals that created it your Credit Card.
It is changing so it depend on the version but these two links should help.

  • ANOTHER Question about my iMac G3. Mac OS X and RAM

Hey, I have ANOTHER question about my iMac G3.
I know that I'm supposed to have the latest firmware updates for my iMac G3 running OS 8.1, which I do, but I read some where these firmware updates could only be updated if you're running OS 9.2. Yet when I run the firmware updater, it says my firmware is up to date. I just wanted to make sure this was correct because I just ordered an OS X 10.2 CD today, and I don't want my mac to be "dead" when I install it.
My next question is how much RAM can my mac hold. It's an iMac G3 with a 233 mhz processor, if that makes a differemce.
Again, thanks to the people who have helped me with my first Mac.

    hi there--
unfortunately you require system 9.1 or 9.2 for the required firmware update 1.2 for your computer http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117. so you'll have to install that if you want to install 10.2. it may work for you for a little while, but then you could possibly lose all your information. so i wouldn't advise attempting installing 10.2 without the correct firmware. • Does anyone know anything about iPhones and/or iPads having barcode scanners for business purposes?

Does anyone know anything about iPhones and/or iPads having barcode scanners for business purposes?  I am doing some research about the benefits of using a Q R Code type of system, but question which handheld sets would be more compatible for using that type of barcode.  Being a avid Apple supporter, I cannot seem to find very much research on this specific topic.
    Any thoughts?

I have a QR reader on my iphone. Works just brill. I've used it to create business cards, with a boat load more information on it (Including my duty times, etc)
Most of the QR readers in the App store are free, so give them a try. You can copy and paste the data just like normal text.
What application for them did you have in mind?

  • Basic question about storage and safety in iMovie '11

A very basic question about storage and safety:
I want to keep a backup of my raw footage on my external hard drive prior to begin working on the movie in iMovie. I want to do this:
    1. Upload the digital files from my camcorder to my Desktop *(as opposed to iMovie)*
    2. Duplicate that footage/clips.
    3. Put the duplicate clips/footage into a folder labeled with the name of that footage (like "Fun At the Dentist" or "Jimmy Learns How to Yodel").
    4. Drag the folder with the footage/clips into my external hard drive into a pre-existing folder titled "Backups/duplicates of all of my raw footage/clips." This big granddaddy folder will house all of the child folders of different movies.
5 Then, open up iMovie '11 and import the raw footage/clips from my Desktop rather than from my camcorder.
    6. Then I want to make a duplicate of my finished movie and put it in my external hard drive in a "Finished Movies" folder.
I know that the original raw unedited footage will always be in iMovies '11 but I want the original to also exist immediately accessible in my external hard drive.
    QUESTION:
Is this viable? Is it wise? (I know it goes an extra unnecessary step, but aside from that.)
*Do you have any precautionary advice?* Should I do something in my iMovies '11 preferences? What?
In earlier years with iMovie '04 or '06 (cannot recall) I made many novice errors and ended up losing audio to my finished movie. I also lost footage.
This time around with iMovie '11 I don't to make such novice, ignorant errors.
Thanks so much for any comments to this question.
    -L

Yes I'm sure it will work great for you.
The iFrame format is something Apple has come up with. The reason for its existence is unknown to me so I can only speculate. But it seems to me that Apple "invented" this format in order to have devices such as Ipod/Ipad/Iphone/Ixxx create clips that are editable on consumer hardware such as already mentioned devices but also standard Mac computers, without the need for format conversion.
iMovie converts most input formats during import, which takes a lot of time, and this need for conversion often comes as a surprise to most people new to home video editing.
iFrame has a resolution of 960x540 which is long way from the common standards of 1920x1080 and 1280x720. If your end target is YouTube however, this may not be too bad though. However if you intend to go with YouTube HD, you may find iFrame footage to look wrong since they are effectively upscaled to a higher resolution.
Technically iFrame uses the H.264 algorithm, a smaller frame size (960x540) and a rather low compression scheme. This will result in large files, but the plus side is that the files are ready for editing without the need for any conversion and iMovie will natively edit the files.

  • Questions about iPhone backup?

I am iPhone novice,so i have some questions about iPhone Transfer included iTunes.
    1. Only back up iPhone files via iTunes?
    2. iTunes just can back up address list and calendar?
    3. i want to back up plug-in,patch,application program, game ect, how to operate iPhone backup?Anyone can tell me simple&professional tutorial about iPhone?Or introduce a good iPhone Transfer like or better than iTunes.
Appreciate your detailed answers! Thanks in advance.
    Message was edited by: MarkSmith10

iTunes is required to transfer iTunes content from your iTunes library on your computer - music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, 3rd party apps, and selected photos from your computer to your iPhone. iTunes also serves as the sync conduit for contacts and calendar events between your iPhone and the supported address book and calendar application on your computer.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. The backup does not include all data on your iPhone. The backup does not include any iTunes content - music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, or 3rd party apps. All iTunes content on your iPhone should remain in your iTunes library on your computer and the backup doesn't include any photos transferred from your computer. All photos transferred from your computer should remain on your computer as well.
This link provides the data that is included with your iPhone's backup.

  • Yet another question about super raid - GS70

Yes, another question about Super Raid...I recently picked up the cheapest model of the GS70 on newegg which comes with 1 mSata SSD...just a mediocre one if I remember reading correctly.  I'm interested in using MSI's Super Raid once my warranty is over with and have been reading a couple posts here:
    1. Walk through of how to reinstall OS
    --> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=167198.msg1224063#msg1224063
    2. I'll need a Super Raid card with links to get some, for about $100 each
    --> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=171722.msg1252847#msg1252847
    3. I can't get Super Raid unless it originally came with it?
    --> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=171185.msg1249640#msg1249640
So what's the bottom line? Would I still be able to enable super raid in the future or am I SOL since it didn't come with it originally?
    thanks!

The GT70 CAN come with an adapter that has 2 (on the older, GT70 0NX models) or 3 (on newer GT70 20X models) sockets for mSATA drives. It's an optional part, that takes place of the primary SATA drive in the notebook, and physically has a different part that connects to the motherboard. If it doesn't come with the SuperRaid adapter, then it just has support for a single 2.5" SATA drive.
The GS70 on the otherhand, has this built into the motherboard and there is no swapping it out for a normal 2.5" SATA drive. You can only use mSATA drives (on those ports). The GS70 is meant to be an ultrabook, and therefore does not have the same ability as the GT70 to house up to 2 full size 2.5" SATA drives.
That's really the main difference here. Without physically seeing a GT70 to see how the SuperRaid adapter works, it's slightly difficult to explain.
But in the end, I wouldn't worry about the SuperRaid....The GS70 should have support for Intel Raid Management Engine, in which case that's all you really need.

  • A question about grub and USB

    Hi All
I have a quick question about grub and USB that I can't quite find the answer to by searching.   Most of the FAQs discuss booting a full linux dristribution from USB. My situation is this.  I am getting a new computer with two drives, the second will be arch and the first will be Vista (for my wife).  I want the computer to boot the same way that my wife's machine boots at work so I don't want to install grub on the MBR.  So, is there a way to have all of the grub config files and kernels installed on the second drive and simply install to grub boot loader to the MBR of a USB stick?  My goal would be to simply plug the USB stick into the new PC and boot arch from the second drive.
    Thanks

    i cant say for hp's
havent worked on any in a while
recent machines have been coupleof dell's , vaio & emachine
which dells do offer it at least the ones i tried , my laptop does(dell)
all home pc's are built by me which do offer to boot individual drives
what hp you getting it may tell in specs
are both discs sata? if so it might not offer this option with 2 drives of same interface
check your power supply alot of these preconfigured machines put cheap under reated power supplies in there
    & will burn your motherboard i just replaced PS(250 watt) & mobo(845gvsr) in an emachines <cheap stuff<
i hope you researched the pc before buying ie : mobo, power supply are the biggest concerns
i find it much more benificial to build my own machine gives me peace at mind. the cost is sometimes more in $ but not always , your biggest expense is time researching hardware
if you live in usa the best places to start looking are bensbargains.net & pricewatch.com
i am not affiliated with either & niether sell the hardware they are just advertisers a place to buy
for costomized machines that i would trust is unitedmicro.com theyll asemble & test before shipping
i have gotten 2 machines so far from them with NO PROBLEMS with hardware (knock knock)
you may want to consider this in your next venture for pc

I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...

Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
